I thought in layman's terms the number of men's and women's sports were basically the same? So will some women's sports get cut soon, too?

Money runs the world and these are not sports people pay to watch. There are others that will surely be on the chopping block. Looks like the Gophers are hosting the gymnastics national championship in the spring? Awkward.

Gophers cut men's gymnastics, men's tennis and men's track and field

"The elimination of men's gymnastics by the Gophers and Iowa leaves only 13 programs in men's college gymnastics. The Gophers are scheduled to host the 2021 NCAA championships April 16-17 at Maturi Pavilion."

Title IX, while serving an understood purpose, has seemingly also driven an end to certain men's sports such as gymnastics. With so few programs left, you wonder how long until they just cancel the sport entirely or the NCAA just no longer recognizes it.

I was disappointed but not surprised as today's announcement. I was more disappointed it was only men's sports. I get they're keeping their ratios the same (54% women enrollment at the U and ~54% of student athletes will be women), but football is a terrible skewing of the data. With 100+ athletes, there is no sport even close to that which means you're really eliminating opportunity by having such a difference in sports offered.

There will be 8 men's sports to 13 women's. No disrespect intended, it just seems lopsided if you account for the fact only a small population can play football even if that sport carries a lot of athletes.

Really sucks, I remember when President Yudolf nearly canceled most of the non-revenue sports - I guess we've been luck to make it this long without that happening.

Tell your little boys to play hockey/basketball/football
Tell your little girls to start rowing

I agree that ratio thing is dumb. I thought it just meant the count of sports had to be the same or something.

Letter from Joan Gabel and Mark Coyle re: cost-cutting measures

Dear ________,

We are writing to you today with difficult news.

For years, Gopher Athletics has operated like most Minnesotans – by humbly doing more with less. Minnesota has diligently sponsored 25 varsity sports, which is the fourth-most in the Big Ten Conference, on a budget that is only the eighth largest. Despite this imbalance, we have taken great pride in offering and excelling in a broad-based athletic department, one that has claimed 76 regular-season conference titles in 20 different sports since 2000.

For the past few years, we had forecasted future sustainability issues, both financial and Title IX related, and although we have directed our efforts to address these challenges while maintaining our current sport offerings, we knew we would be faced with a difficult sports sponsorship decision at some point.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the Big Ten's decision to postpone fall 2020-21 sports has greatly increased the financial concerns. Our athletic department is now facing a projected loss of revenue of approximately $75 million just this fiscal year. This is a significant deficit and one that will have an impact for years to come. At the same time, we remain steadfast in our commitment to provide Title IX gender-equitable participation opportunities that are closely aligned with our male and female undergraduate enrollment percentages. We are mindful that our sport programs have worked to adjust their participation opportunities to keep pace with our growing female undergraduate population percentages.

As a result, we have determined that Athletics is no longer able to financially or equitably sustain 25 varsity programs, and pending approval of the Board of Regents, we will discontinue men's indoor track and field, men's outdoor track and field, men's gymnastics and men's tennis at the completion of their 2020-21 competition season. Should health and safety precautions allow, these teams will have the opportunity to compete during the 2020-21 season.

Our goal for the last few years was to create a nimble athletic department, one that was self-sufficient, competed at the highest level and provided a first-class experience for our student-athletes. We experienced record-level fundraising during the last several years and reduced our operating budgets during both FY19 and FY20. When COVID-19 struck, we adjusted and members of our executive team and several head coaches volunteered for two separate pay reductions. We previously reduced $5 million from our FY21 budget and implemented hiring and spending freezes. Despite these financial efforts, we can still no longer sustain 25 programs.

In addition to the financial challenges and gender-equity commitments, we also considered community impact, local and national interest, competitiveness, and sport sponsorship at the Big Ten and NCAA Division I level when making this decision. We understand that this is devastating news for impacted student-athletes, coaches and staff. We also recognize the ripple effect this decision will have on all of our student-athletes and on former letterwinners, alumni, donors, family, friends and fans who have participated on and cheered for these four programs over the years. We did not make this decision lightly.

Members of the impacted teams will continue to have access to athletic, academic and mental health support throughout their 2020-21 competition season. We will also continue to honor all existing scholarships for individuals who choose to complete their undergraduate degree at Minnesota, while still offering them access to academic advising, sports psychology and necessary access to athletic medicine. We will also assist any student-athlete who decides to transfer and will support them through the transition process.

We have been honest with our student-athletes, staff and campus leadership about the severe financial ramifications our department is facing. We are also aware that this decision directly impacts lives and the livelihoods of many, while forever changing the landscape of Gopher Athletics.

Personnel Cost-Reduction Plan
In addition to adjusting our sport offerings, we are also announcing a personnel cost-reduction plan for Athletics. This is in addition to the University's previously implemented furlough and pay-reduction plan, which members of the athletic department already participated in. Most academic professional and administrative employees will be subject to a 10 percent reduction in appointment, while civil service and labor represented employees will be furloughed for 17 days. These impacts will continue for the remainder of the fiscal year. Employees who make $40,000 or less will not be impacted.

The athletic department is also eliminating eight positions in addition to those that will be eliminated because of program discontinuation. The department anticipates a savings of $1.3 million this fiscal year related to its personnel cost-reduction plan.

It was previously announced that Director of Athletics Mark Coyle and head coaches P.J. Fleck, Hugh McCutcheon, Bob Motzko, Richard Pitino and Lindsay Whalen volunteered for a 10 percent salary reduction. That reduction will now be extended through the entire fiscal year and will result in a savings of an additional $1.2 million.

In short, we have tried to find a way to avoid these difficult decisions. Unfortunately, we could not overcome the challenges presented by these unprecedented times.

We fully understand that these decisions will have a significant impact on our student-athletes and employees, especially those who are directly affected. We will continue to explore ways to mitigate our deficit and will continue to support our remaining student-athletes and staff.

Sincerely,

Joan T.A. Gabel, President
Mark Coyle, Director of Athletics

It's a tough deal, but sports like men's gymnastics have been on the decline since far before Title IX. How many MN high schools have men's gymnastics? It's not a draw for enrollment and brings next to no revenue in the door. It is a sport from a bygone era.

Tennis and track, on the other hand, are a different story. Tennis isn't necessarily an enrollment draw and certainly isn't a revenue sport, but MN has been pretty good at it for a northern school.

Track is the head-scratcher. It can be an enrollment draw, and based on sheer numbers could be a revenue sport. Still, it is tough to draw exceptional track athletes to a northern school-- the indoor season is really not popular among the top track athletes.

Title IX has a number of tests, the easiest is ensuring equivalent opportunities between genders, but it also requires those opportunities mirror the student body. Considering SCSU is still defending a Title IX lawsuit, I am sure the U of M is worried that it cannot stray too far without facing similar scrutiny. The savings from these cuts are not high, so it really is a Title IX concern. If there were revenue available, the U could have added another women's sport perhaps, but that wasn't possible. Long term I could see the U seeking to add men's soccer back once the ship gets stabilized.

Tough road ahead for college athletics. UW is anticipating being $47M in the red this year. Hard to know exactly where Minnesota will end up by they're going to be without $20M in ticket revenue, hard to know how much of the $10M in donations tied to ticket revenue will stick and clearly they won't get the $48M they got in tv money last year. I think they were only able to hold about 55 of their 95 football games as part of their agreements.

The University can now partner with alcohol companies as long as they leave Goldy Gopher out of advertising per Star Tribune. Big revenue booster.

Who made that decision? The athletic dept or the regents?

The Board of Regents.
The athletic department is estimated to receive about $300,000 per year from alcohol licensing and sponsorship deals under the proposal the U's Board of Regents approved Friday. The university's name and "M" logo can appear on beer cans or other alcohol-related paraphernalia, but the mascot cannot. A portion of the revenue will go to alcohol recovery and education programs.

Next up: Pot licensing, when it becomes legal here! "No Smoking" while in the arena will take on an entirely different meaning. Which cannabis company will be first to sign a deal with the Regents? And which will be the first to ink a patent for "Gopher Gold"?

Is this really worth being 'wild-eyed' about like Regent McMillan said or is it virtue signaling?

It is not like they are going to put Bud Light on their jerseys. If my choices are getting a beer sponsor on the boards and signage in the arena or increase my season ticket prices, that is an easy choice. The amount of revenue that has been lost the last year and a half is unimaginable. I remember when people complained for years and years and years about the fact they could not purchase a beer at the arena. Times are changing and I'm sure if there was a better option, they would have taken it.

I’ve tailgated 11 am FB games in Madison where they reported on the radio before the game started that the drunk tank was full.

Take a look at the scores. Most are not close. Lost 18-0 to Iowa their last game. They are unbelievably bad this season, very weird to see.

I've watched quite a few matches this year but in this one the Gophers didn't play anywhere close to their capability, and in fact it wasn't even close. WAY too many unforced errors that you don't ordinarily see from this team. But credit Pitt for taking advantage.

Sounds like the Gopher hockey season. Minnesota team in the end when it counts. Lost conference in close race with uw.

Only top 8 team to not make final 8.

Yeah, considering the ongoing implosion, any insight would be most welcome. Outscored 73-14 the past 6 games to drop to 4-23.

Actually, today was quite impressive. MN managed to hit the same player with a pitch not only in the same game, but the same inning. How often does that feat happen.

I heard the success of pro/college baseball and the mere existence of pro basketball in the state were traded to a higher power for Kaprisov to come over.

This MAY have something to do with the baseball's team abysmal performance and record this season.

"The baseball series between Minnesota and Ohio State scheduled for May 7-9 in Minneapolis has been postponed. The decision was mutually agreed upon by both teams due to COVID health and safety concerns within the Minnesota program."

That's a scenario where you manage to grab a victory or two and consider it a terrific success. Best of luck to the Gophers.

Golan is from the St. Louis area, and is a single mom. I'm guessing this has a lot more to do with getting closer to home/parents than other things.

Missouri has had the same coach for the first 25 years of the program, and he retired this year giving her the opening.

It's not like leaving for more $$ and a much stronger softball conference. That was a whole different thing.

I forgot about Trachsel leaving. Piper deserved a shot. Hopefully she can keep them at least at the level they're at. They got a sucky draw again this year. NCAA does not know how to do brackets.

Gophers whipped Long Beach State and took their revenge on Fresno State to get to the regional final against UCLA, where they'll need to win twice.
Game one at 5pm CT on ESPN2.

Now THIS is a huge "win" for the program. Would be great to see them give UCLA a push, but just getting to the regional final, especially after dropping the first game is a very nice accomplishment. If you can be "relevant" on the national stage in your sport, that is tremendous.

UCLA eliminated the Gophers today, 2-1. They really played well and gave UCLA a hell of a game. Genuinely terrific showing by the Gophers.

They hung in with UCLA really well. Fiser Pease was absolutely spectacular holding that team to two runs. They scored 2 runs or less only 3 times all season en route to their 44-4 record. Once against Arizona, once against Arizona State, and once against Oregon.

Pease pitched the UCLA game.

.....but, having said that, losing Fiser leaves a huge hole to fill next year. You never know with recruits until you get them on the field, but here’s a couple of articles on who’s in the pipeline.
