We've seen them look like loose stool in the Big tourney and comeback, get back in that mindset
They came back on a fast MI team, but Mankato won't play like Michigan. They're going to protect the 2 goal lead and not play outside their box.

This is not the kind of team you want to play come back against. Ask BC how they did against a similar style team in SCSU.
True, but if they are gonna go into a shell for the next 40 mins, that's gonna bite them in the arse me thinks.

Worst period of hockey since the Lucia era of laziness. Switching to bouncy ball if they play like this in the 2nd.
you watch the pasting WI gave us earlier this year?

Lucky to get out of there down 2. 27 looks like he's gonna fight for it. Hopefully everyone else jumps on board.

couldn't agree more. If Hastings is foolish enough to think going into a shell is a good idea with 2 full periods to go, I think we all know how this one ends. Now if they keep it the same into the 3rd, then it may be a different situation but you can't try play trap this early against a team who can skate like we can even if your shell is solid, you're playing with fire

Actually they were playing pretty good in those games, just not on the scoreboard. Tonight, not so much.

Even on the power play, Mankato clears the puck down the ice, and due to laziness, Laf was forced to hold the puck because Mankato outskated our entire team.

Another time where Mankato was icing the puck, they got it waived off because of defense laziness. That then turned into a PK. Really ugly.

The issue is more that a trapping defensive team like mankato plays a style that is good at protecting leads and counter attacking off teams that are pressing offensively.

I'm holding to my "no negativity." Just want the team to get engaged and start fighting for pucks and making the basic things happen. Crisp passes, fast skating and getting shots on net.

You can beat defensive minded teams by out working them and keeping the play fluid. I get MSU-M will do everything possible to break the flow, cause that's their game, but they have done it before and need to get on it FAST!!

That was awful and to me the most inexcusable play of the period. If I'm coaching it's the exact play I focus on as I'm peeling paint.....

My cat is only attacking Maverick players on my TV. Apparently, that is not working either to help the Gophers.

Riveting story about how her son was playing in OT in the NCAAs and she went out to shovel snow. Why should we care about this story if she didn’t care enough to watch the game?

yes you can see it watching that the ice is horrendous with how often the puck is on edge, etc

I think you're seeing what happens when young talent meets older and tougher players.

They are struggling because Mankato won't give them the ice they want, and they don't know how to take it.

Six shots so far...pretty ugly.

Otherwise, MSU-M will continue to make the Gophs look the way Omaha looked last night/

weird how we take a low % shot and it leads to a chance if people were crashing the net. style hasn't adapted at all from the guys tonight based on what Kato is giving us and it's going to be a dagger unless they can draw another couple PPs

agree that Sammy looks flat. McLaughlin looks like he's trying, but you need all 5 on the ice going against this type of team.

This is exactly the point I made earlier about Kato protecting a 2 goal lead. They know how to play with a lead and make a goal or two stand up.

Gophers are starting to look like WI against the Beavers.

Could be our young guns are getting schooled by an older, tougher team. And, it could be that our coach is getting outcoached.

Is it just me or is this ice in pretty rough shape? Seems like I've seen a lot of guys losing their footing, pucks bouncing all over, etc.
The puck is constantly bouncing. Been a long time since I've seen anything like it.
you mean since the games yesterday in the eastern regionals? amazing how bad it looks out there though tonight
I didn't watch any of those. I just watched UND v UMD and that ice seemed ok.

Be ready for 20 mins of what we saw in the last 30 seconds of that period.

Question - seems like this team struggles against he defensive first teams like Notre Dame, MSU, and now MSU-M. Is it a personnel issue or does tBob not know how to coach through that?

7 shots with 36 minutes in is...something.
weird how we take a low % shot and it leads to a chance if people were crashing the net. style hasn't adapted at all from the guys tonight based on what Kato is giving us and it's going to be a dagger unless they can draw another couple PPs
This is exactly the point I made earlier about Kato protecting a 2 goal lead. They know how to play with a lead and make a goal or two stand up.

Gophers are starting to look like WI against the Beavers.

Could be our young guns are getting schooled by an older, tougher team. And, it could be that our coach is getting outcoached.
it is a fair point. maybe i put too much faith in tBob to stylistically adapt and activate our D more, but they've been so off their game today it hasn't been an option. having 3 passing options going up is essential but our D can't beat their first forechecker and it's f*** us. was supposed to be one of our strengths

I can see why Dryden McKay's numbers are so good. His defense doesn't allow shots to get through. It appears McManus is not good enough to go, as Nevers is in his spot now. 1 period for them to wake up and skate or GPL will be in full meltdown mode.

Okay. Let’s come back and do to Mankato what they did to Quinnipiac. OUTWORK THEM! They think they have it in the bag - and what do we have to lose? We need to get one to get it started, that will fire them up.
C’mon Gophers!

gotcha. Fargo ice was the best and that sheet is used to skating numerous numerous games in a weekend, so not surprised

Did anyone hear the Mankato goalie was named after famous hockey goalie Ken Dryden? That’s amazing!

The only thing better for ESPN is if he was named LeBron.

Laffer better be ready in the third as the Gophers will be pushing the defense up the zone and it could turn into some chances for Kato.

I mean it's a lot of things. The trap is how Denver won years ago once they got a lead. It's hard in college to connect enough tape to tape passes up and down your lineup to break it. this team should have the personnel to beat it with having active Dmen in Johnson, Lacombe, Faber who can start the rush with guys going forward, which is the key to hitting the line with speed. You can also try play this dump and chase style (what we're going), but you need heavy hitting guys to make their D feel pressure, which we do not have in spades. So its a tough style to crack and tBob is employing the style we dont' have the guys for (would've probably worked for some of our other teams in the past, but this is not a hitting/forechecking team, they're a finesse team).

He has seen something like 200+ less shots than Laffer this year with only 4 less games. You still have to stop what gets through, but he doesn't see a lot of rubber.

Its not about trapping or scheme. Its about playing your hardest, competing every shift and not taking anything for granted. That´s the difference between the two teams.

The young guns are going against a team who is forcing them into a different style, just as SCSU did to BC. I think the Gophers' talent is a little short on grit tonight, and LaFontaine set a bad tone on that first goal. This is the kind of game that Reedy, Meyers, Nelson et. al. have to turn around. The skill guys are getting dominated.

I'm pulling for them, but the way MSU is keeping MN away from their net, I'd be lying if I said I was optimistic.

Pouring the puck in the net last night probably didn't help. I've seen it happen too many times. Dominate one night and lay a turd the next.

While I agree we can step up the effort (a lot), sometimes it IS about scheme. Mankato is not a good matchup for us.

So sick of these announcers. Glad MSU has it all wrapped up. They will be surprised when Gophers pull this one out.

MN needs to resign themselves to they have to dump the puck in and forecheck hard. This means getting it deep early and while forecheckers are moving forward. Too many dumps had 4 players lined up on the blue line so they could not win a race.

I wouldn't say no way. But Mankato is outplaying the Gophers on the ice and behind the bench.
