Still no power here in Crystal/New Hope area. And no updates from Xcel on when it will be back on. Still just says assessing damage.
Ours said that all the way until it came back on.
Usually I get a text message with an estimate on when power will be restored fairly quickly. Never got one today. Power came back on about an hour ago, thankfully!

We just got a message from Xcel saying our power should be restored by 11:00pm tomorrow. Totally met their goal, I guess.
Coolers and ice. *sigh* ALWAYS BE PREPARED. When my fridge went out, I lost nothing. :poke:
Being REALLY prepared would mean having one of those whole-house backup systems that runs on natural gas. :dup:

Gee, is that what coolers are for? :confused2:

We have coolers. We made the mistake of assuming it wouldn't take 12 hours to restore power, because it never had before.

Us too. But this time it unexpectedly came back on, then 7 hours later we got a text saying they expect it to be restored by 11:00pm tomorrow.

I was in Iowa last week and I saw some of the damage left by the Derecho that ran through the state. Where I saw the damage was between Grand Junction and Panora. There were still some power poles down that had roads closed. The most amazing sight though were entire 300+ acre fields just blown over....flat to the ground. I've seen tornado damage to fields but never in my life have I seen an entire corn field just laid over from wind. From what my BIL was telling me that over 10 million acres are on the ground statewide. Central Iowa didn't even get the worst of it, I guess Cedar Rapids is still a mess one week later.

One of my best friends sells seed to farmers in the Cedar Rapids area. He was telling me today about the devastation to the crops but ended by saying, "The positive side is the crop will be much smaller. There are very few grain bins or corn dryers left anyway."

I've seen pictures of crushed grain bins but I only saw one on my trip to and from my in-laws. It was a smaller one but I have seen where all the bins at a smaller co-op where crushed like beer cans. The bins below are from the town of Luther which is about 15 miles west of Ames. Actually would have only been about 20 miles east of my north/south travel route but right in line with the damage path with the damage that I saw.

I'm looking at this on the Lake Charles, LA radar, and that is one scary-well defined eye out there. 220 miles out from the radar and about 40 mile diameter, and very clear eyewall.

Edit: You can't tell from that screenshot, but the echo-tops on the far side of the eye are more than 50,000 feet up.

Agreed. The graphic and watching the raw power of nature is, indeed cool.

The likely devastation to people's lives that is about to begin on the other hand, very much not so.

You forgot to mention the "thick smoke".
Record heat (the hottest of the summer) and a period of thick smoke will be pushed aside by a record-setting cold front around 5 p.m. Monday that brings in snow and bitter cold.

Not to be pedantic, but that's 7 tropical systems. The three closest to the US are unlikely to even make Tropical Storm level, much less Hurricanes (the one off North Carolina in that article has already dropped off the NHC's list to watch, and the one in the Gulf is around a 10% chance to strengthen even to Tropical Depression level) I'd guess both the Tropical Storms in the Atlantic would be pretty likely to strengthen into Hurricanes, and Disturbance 3 is likely to hit Storm level in the next couple days, so it seems likely to become a Hurricane as well. And the other area highlighted is kind of an odd reference. I'd guess any real disturbance/energy in there would wind up feeding either Rene or Disturbance 3

Well, I was certainly wrong about the system that was just off the Bahamas in that article. I wasn't watching too close over the weekend, but looks like it got just strong enough to be a depression Friday night, Tropical storm Saturday evening, them up to hurricane today.

Looks like Rene fell apart rather than strengthening form that weird patch, which I THINK is what turned in to Teddy?

Had the day off and went to run some errands in eagan around 2pm. It was real dark out and saw some lightning flashes. Then about 6 sprinkles of rain and that was it.

Had the day off, had lunch at Ansari's, took 62 back to my place about 2pm. It was torrential. 35mph on that stretch.

We were about to tee off on the 18th hole on a NW suburban course when we began to see flashes and hear thunder. Then it started raining - hard - and of course none of us were carrying umbrellas. Thankfully it only lasted about 10 minutes and we were able to finish.

It was quick. For me it lasted on Crosstown from 35W until 169. Sunny on both sides of that. During? Traffic was going about 35-40mph, out of necessity.

I did 363 miles yesterday on the bagger, AKA Harley Road Glide. What a day!
I know Oct can be sketchy for motorcycle weather so if that is the last big run it was worth it.

Overall this weather has been amazing. Might end up having my last weekly cigar on Saturday. Monday it's supposed to be getting back to autumn mode.

Not sure if the cities had the same weather as we did in southern Mn. For the past 3 days we have had clouds come over us and rain, then sunny, then rain etc. Did not amount to a whole lot, but just enough to interrupt the soybean harvest.

It was rain, sun, rain, wind, sun, rain and wind, sun, whatever. It was a random speed dial throughout the day in Plymouth.

There was a wind advisory for quite a few hours today.

And then the random super rainstorm that lasted for about 60 seconds today in Plymouth...Odd weather day.

Had to head up to Coon Rapids after work, 5:30ish. Surprisingly, traffic knew how to drive in the flurries. Map said 31 minutes, took 36. I was happy about that. That being said, tomorrow will be a sh*show if we get what is expected.. :(

Flurries in Plymouth, but looking at the radar the snowfall totals will exceed the 1 to 3 inch totals that they were forecasting last night.
