Sorry, Handy, not gonna pay $60 or whatever it was for an SRO ticket, much less $90 (or whatever) for a seat. That's just insane. Doesn't mean that the rivalry is lessened.

As I’ve stated before I think it depends a lot on when you began following the team. When I started watching gopher hockey in the early 90s CC was the biggest rival, North Dakota was an afterthought, I also think many of the gopher fans who only follow hockey consider UND a bigger rival compared to us who follow all gopher sports, Bucky is the main rival. Lastly, I think the outstate, esp northern MN gopher fans would consider UND the worst compared to the gopher fans from the metro area who consider Bucky the worst.

Most know that I HATE anything wisconsin. I'd say I hate both UND and uw equally for Gopher hockey. But the atmosphere for UND games is a different level than any other opponent including uw.

Sure it does. You may not like that it does but it does. If tickets were cut in half it isnt like Mariucci would be filled with the faithful and you know it.

You can mock their reasons all you want to but they are willing to pay that to see the game. To them it matters. To us it doesnt. It most likely has more to do with Gopher Hockey losing status amongst the locals than just this rivalry but the rivalry losing status is part of that as well.

I'd rather pay half that and have a beer or two and a meal at Senser's Bloomington (a Whioux bar) and ridicule the fans.

To say cutting that price in half wouldn't make a noticeable difference is ludicrous. And I get the feeling that moving the forward the U is actually making more of an effort to get people back. They've been more creative in the past 6 months than in the previous 6 years at least with thinking outside the box. That combined with what will be a more competitive team and possibly more apathy for the Wild and I can see overall interest climbing back up.

If they start winning consistently, that will make the most impact in attendance.

I'm not so sure about that. They went through a run of 6 straight conference titles, and attendance kept trending slowly down the whole time.

Yeah, but the second half of that was in a weak big ten conference so winning a wimpy conference didn’t mean you were killing it all season. I’m talking setting the bar, dominating the polls type winning. It’s going to take that kind of season(s) to regain fans.

The expectations are simply too high. No one can dominate year in and year out anymore. They can’t win their league every year and make it to the frozen. It just won’t happen. For some fans, it’s a bad season if that doesn’t happen.

With all the player turnover and our still-new coach I'll consider it to be a successful season if the Gophers manage to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. But in 2020-21 the expectations will be higher.

The occasional NCAA win (something some schools have more consistently accomplished than the Gophers that past several years) can also be a boost to attendance. As noted the BTC is now more competitive, they have a very nice NC schedule this year, the Wild are likely to be down...

I don't think attendance is going to increase, at least to what it used to be (though that might just be an unrealistic expectation at this point), until they stop making you pay $70 to see us play Duluth or $100 for North Dakota (and I think $70 for WI?). You can basically pay that much to see the Wild and even if they're bad (which would lower the prices for that team) it's still NHL hockey where you can see the best players in the world. Even if the team was an unstoppable 39-1 force and the Wild were awful I'm not sure you'd see packed buildings at those prices.

And yes I realize that season tickets when averaged out are more affordable but even I'm not willing to make that commitment which tells you everything you need to know.

Trix... the one problem though is they sold ~ 9750 seats for UMD and Wisconsin games. It's just 20% of the people with tickets didn't make it to the games.

Assumption is corporations bought the tickets but they either couldn't give them away or the people who they gave tickets too chose not to come. I know when I had season tickets, I had trouble giving them away at times.

I haven't looked at the numbers for this year's attendance (you have a link?) but looking at 17-18 data the WI series had 8301 on Friday (paid) and like 9200 on Saturday. That's still 800 seats at best going unbought and nearly 1700 on Friday.

Did the paid attendance really improve that drastically a year later?

Corporations are either not trying to get rid of those tickets or they can't even give them away for free because nobody is interested. Either way that's not ideal.

I can believe not being able to give away tickets to a Michigan State or Penn State game, but against UMD, Minnesota State or Wisconsin?

The UMN is hopeful that with their new ticketing partner, Paciolan, ticket holders who need to move their seats can transfer tickets with their phone and using StubHub if they want to sell them on a secondary market. One of the strengths of the Minnesota Wild is a robust ticketmaster platform for the secondary market. We'll see if it's there for Gophers fans as well.

'Attendance' is in each box score.

I'll do a deep dive on attendance and ticketing at some point leading up to the season. There was a pretty good push for ticket sales on Saturdays the second half of the year, but it was a struggle last year with the slow start.

Is “announced” what is actually scanned at the arena or what was sold? I would not have said the arena was more than 3/4 full for most games as those numbers indicate.

Those numbers are definitely better than the year before so that's good and if people are gonna pay exorbitant prices for the premier games I can't fault the U for pricing them that way. They might want to figure out some type of plan for Friday though because they're clearly selling less tickets those days (traffic/work would be my guess).

That’s what I figured, as other than the umtp and sconnie games, there was probably not even close to 5K in the building.

Not for those rivalry games.
Didn't play UMD at home the year before.

Year before Friday was higher for uw.
This year's Saturday was the perfect setup of CHEAP concessions, 1980 reunion, and I'm thinking probably some cheap ticket promotions to get people in the door.

Overall this year was not an improvement over last year, and we should see that when the scanned ticket numbers come out. The games where people showed up were mostly the ones with super cheap tickets from the State Fair.

Fair enough, I just think it’s hard to argue for lower prices for the rivalry games (Duluth and WI this past year) when the seats are being sold. On the other hand the mid tier games that clearly aren’t selling out or anywhere close could probably use an adjustment and like I said Friday seems to be an issue across the board even for the rivalry games.

And you will see $10 get in prices this year.

So does the fact that the U upcharges a number of games for people buying single game tickets compensate for when they cut prices for other games?
Yes that's the idea. The UMN doesn't want the total for tickets ala carte to be less than the season ticket pricing.

If season tickets are $500 and you have your 21 dates, you could tier the games like so and it'd be cheaper to buy season tickets than single games.

$10 Games
Sunday Oct. 6 Mount Royal University (ex)
Friday Oct. 18 Niagara at Minnesota
Saturday Oct. 19 Niagara at Minnesota
Friday Nov. 15 Penn State at Minnesota
Saturday Nov. 16 Penn State at Minnesota
Friday Jan. 17 USNTDP U-18 at Minnesota (ex)
Friday Feb. 7 Michigan State at Minnesota
Saturday Feb. 8 Michigan State at Minnesota

$25 Games
Friday Jan. 24 Ohio State at Minnesota
Saturday Jan. 25 Ohio State at Minnesota
Friday Nov. 1 Notre Dame at Minnesota
Saturday Nov. 2 Notre Dame at Minnesota
Saturday Dec. 28 Mariucci Classic (Bemidji St)
Sunday Dec. 29 Mariucci Classic (Minnesota State/St. Cloud State)
Friday Feb. 28 Michigan at Minnesota
Saturday Feb. 29 Michigan at Minnesota

$50 Games
Friday Oct. 25 Minnesota Duluth at Minnesota $50
Friday Nov. 22 Wisconsin at Minnesota $50
Saturday Nov. 23 Wisconsin at Minnesota $50
Thursday Nov. 28 North Dakota at Minnesota $50
Friday Nov. 29 North Dakota at Minnesota $50
This would be nice but realistically probably closer to (excluding promotions):
Exhibitions = 10
Niagara = 15
PSU/MSU/OSU = 25
Classic/Notre Dame/Michigan = 40
uw/UMD = 55
UND = 80

It's been a tough decision but my indifference to the Big Ten is finally going to win. Gonna drop season tickets and create a 5-7 game (depending on how it works) package of the WCHA games. Also going to make the CC trip which I'm excited about. Maybe the UMD away game but I've gone to the last few.

Didn't think I'd see the day, but since it'll be so easy to get back in with season tickets I can't justify a grand on each ticket when it could still be fairly dead in Mariucci this year.

Well for all of our sakes I hope in a few years you want to get season tickets again but can’t.
(Meaning there is a waiting list again and it’s hard to get tickets.)

No disrespect to Bonin21, but if the Gophs exceed expectations and create a real buzz in town like we used to see, I would love to see tickets going for more than face value, with a waiting list developing for season tickets and scalpers selling for more than face value around the building..

Realistically, I give this three years (2022-03) for this to happen.

This might just be wishful thinking, but it feels like there's been more positive buzz beyond just GPL and USCHO lately than I can recall in quite some time. Whether or not that will equal more butts in seats as quickly as this season I don't know, but this off-season just "feels" different. Also I don't think the Wild are going to inspire anyone this year and if the Gophers can make some in-state noise early into the season who knows?

I think most of us agree Coach Motzko has the team headed in the right direction. The $25/game for low demand season tickets was a good start. With that said, I am expecting a slight decline in STHs. No business likes to admit publically that demand is waning, so I don't believe the U will release the "true" numbers.

I actually think net season ticket holders could increase. 500 is a steal. With that in mind I bet bodies in seats could increase a bit too. Maybe not a ton but let's see.

Any sports organization can say any attendance number they want and just say “paid” attendance. True numbers are what your eyeballs tell you for the majority of the games.

It bothers me because it deceitfully uses the word attendance. If you bought a ticket to an event and didn't go, would you say you attended that event?

I've always thought that it's not so much of selling tickets problem but getting the ones that are sold in the rink

How can so many Corp ticket holders be no shows and not be able to give tickets to people who will show up?

No. But his concern was a business not wanting to publicly admit that demand is waning. Since they were reporting attendance the same way when no shows were low, being consistent and continuing to report that way doesn’t seem to be based in receipt.

I think they say, "paid attendance" and that has nothing to do with reporting, "true" STH numbers. I have zero reason to believe we are not hearing the true number of total STH's.

What kind of asshole superimposes the North Dakota logo over one of our championship banners?
Gophers media team super imposes the NDSU logo over a Gopher NCAA championship banner.

Where as the Whioux have trolling figured out.

Glad they could save some dough by cutting women’s hockey so they could afford that scoreboard.
"Hard work will beat talent, if talent doesn't work hard"
Doug Woog - 1990

This quote was written on the chalkboard in a lockeroom in the old Ralph Engelstad arena my Squirt team used the day after the Gophers used it and came into the game ranked #1 in the nation and lost 6-1 to a second rate Whioux team.

Overhead on SiouxSports.com - Why does every thread always turn into a "Gopher" thread? Is there a secret infatuation with them?

The Engelstad Foundation paid $4 million. The other $2 million came out of the rinks maintenance fund...so yeah, the school did pay for some of it.

Good! They are going to be a team with TONS of MN kids in the coming years. Definitely my second team to "cheer" for.

Has anyone been able to piece together the upcoming schedule with game times and TV info? We are just a little over a month away but still this info is still missing on team's page. I'm trying to update my calendar to see how many conflicts I'm going to have, especially all the home games where I hope to attend as many as possible...

I have FINALLY updated the hockey schedule for this season on GPL. I will adjust the times and TV once we have that info. Most times are just a guess right now.

If you are not subscribed to the hockey schedule on GPL with Android or iOS.... why not? That is always up to date. You can subscribe once, and games will be added automatically by me whenever the schedule comes out.
