GPL Down....

Post by Jupiter » Tue Aug 11 8:03 am

I hate waking up and finding that GPL is down and has been down for who knows how long.

Apparently it was another problem with the Dallas server site.

A planned outage coming tonight. From my provider:

Hello,

We are getting in touch to let you know about planned VPS cloud facility maintenance that we are conducting on Wednesday, August 12th. We will be moving a Cloud VPS hypervisor that your VPS is set up on to a new, more customized, cage that will provide us with better network and power management options.

This will affect all the Cloud VPS instances that are set up on the hypervisors that are being moved, including your server server.gopherpucklive.com.

The maintenance will be completed between 10 PM and 2 AM EDT and the whole process will be tracked on our status page:

https://status.asmallorange.com/?id=173

During the move, we will stop all the Cloud VPS instances, unrack hypervisor from its current location, rack in the new cage and start servers back up again. The whole process should take 60 minutes and servers will be inaccessible during the maintenance.

Although the maintenance window is set to 4 hours, actual downtime per server shouldn’t be longer than 60 minutes. We won’t be moving all the hypervisors at the same time, which is why we have scheduled longer maintenance window.

Please let us know if you notice any problems with your server outside of the maintenance window.

Best regards,
A Small Orange Support team

Looks like the site was down last night due to a disk drive being full and not allowing the database to be written to. It had to do with too many backups being stored on the drive. All seems to be fixed now.

Is anyone else having an issue on the non-mobile version where the portal links at the top and bottom of screen give you an error? I had to change the URL to the Portal since it's different but those links still give an error about Max Connections

That happened to me when I first logged in tonight. Try hitting refresh on the page when you get that max connections page.

Yeah... I have not had any issues, which is why I could not help him at all.

Of course even IF I did have those problems I could probably not help. It's probably just a glitch with the provider.

I noticed it being down fairly late in the day yesterday. I presume they blew WAY past their "6 hour" window?

And yes, I'd say moving is a good idea. You put way too much work into this place to have to fight with these guys to simply keep the site up.

It's just a real pain in the ass to move hosts... The database for this message board is huge and not easy to move. On top of that, I have the WordPress database now. So it will just make moving more of a pain.

That was the only reason for my comment on Tweeter (your host actually follows me, due to my diligence in calling them out). It was WAY WAY WAY past the window for the updates.

There are lots of options here. I'd highly recommend moving to a managed service. There are many providers out there, some include free migration and many will include import features so if you found a provider you liked that used vBullentin they can injest your phpbb history into their platform. I don't know how big the existing database is but I'd guess the site could be run very well with a managed forum provider for perhaps $50 a month. You'd never have downtime, patching, or upgrades to worry about and the site wouldn't crash every spring.

Your wordpress site can remain on ASO or you could find a second provider to run Wordpress as a service. To facilitate two providers, it would be helpful to run the main pages under gopherpucklive.com and the forum as a subdomain like forum.gopherpucklive.com.

I found these two providers in about 5 minutes of searching. Both have migration and import offerings.

https://www.tmdhosting.com/phpbb-hosting.html
http://www.vbulletin.com/en/vbulletin-cloud/

If you want to think outside the box, contact USCHO.com and offer to partner with them. I'm sure they'd like to get the traffic from GPL back. Have them run a forum for you with a branded subdomain and custom look. USCHO is run by Amateur Sports Marketing, LLC out of Excelsior.

Yeah... I'm not paying for vBulletin on top of having to pay for a host. Just not gonna happen. I am also not going to split the site in to multiple domains.

If anything, I may move back to a shared host environment. Or something close to it. We just do not need the resources that we used to when we ran chat on the server.

Jup - have you had anyone say the Portal page is inaccessible from a Windows PC? I can get to the Forum Index but the Portal just gives me a SQL error saying GopherPU_GPL3 has more than the max number of active connections. I don't see the issue on my iOS devices.

I remember something similar I think one time and maybe I just need to refresh my cache, but I thought the last time this happening I couldn't get it to work on any of my devices

Edit: Did confirm clearing my cache did the trick

Sorry about the downtime last night and today. I was not online at all and was not able to fix the problem until I got home today.

Sam backup issue as before. The server was keeping and extra week of backups. Causing the server to run out of space. And easy fix, but I can only to it from my computer.

Need to come up with a better backup solution.

And right after we came back up yesterday, a table in the database crashed. It was the table that held ALL of the posts.

I was unable to repair it, but my provider was able to get it fixed this morning. So I THINK we are good to go.

And right after we came back up yesterday, a table in the database crashed. It was the table that held ALL of the posts.

I was unable to repair it, but my provider was able to get it fixed this morning. So I THINK we are good to go.
I blame UMD and the spirits of the Penalty Box message board.
I'll go with that.... just because it's funny!

Luckily my provider was able to fix the database. Otherwise there was a good chance that all of the posts would have been lost.

Glad the site is back up. Appreciate your hard work Jupiter...realize it's a thankless job. That said...the timing of the crash was mystical

Not sure what you are talking about. The portal has been working since the site came back up this morning.

Ok, will re-clear the cache/cookies. Did that last night, didn't bookmark anything, figured that would do the trick. I was wrong. *shrug*

Just to let your guys know... The backups of the site are no longer stored on the GPL server and causing it to run out of space. Those backups are now going to Amazon S3 storage instead. So hopefully we have seen the last of the problems that caused GPL to be down recently and also the main reason GPL was down for a few days over a year ago when I was on a trip to Winnipeg.

Sorry about the downtime.... The server ran out of HD space when the backups failed to remove themselves after being moved offsite.

GPL will be up and down over the next few days. I am in the process of upgrading the server software that runs the entire backend of the site.

I didn't even know that GPL was back up... I must have done something earlier this evening to get it back. Not sure what.

But like I said, I'll be doing a lot of upgrades. So the site will be down from time to time.

Not sure how long GPL was down.... Apparently the nameserver went down and the site would not load. All seems to be fine now.

Yeah... No clue what just happened and why GPL wasn't loading. I optimized some tables in the main database and the site just stopped working. Luckily I was able to restart and we are back up.

Do not know what is causing the problems on GPL...

The best I can tell is that someone or something is actively asking for files and pages on the message board. Like hundreds of requests all at once. As if they are trying to hack in on something. My host has not been much help figuring things out. If I knew the IP address of the culprit, I could block it. But right now I do not have that info.

So I have been trying to figure things out.... With not much luck. I have turned off the board from time to time to see if it helps. But so far the CPU is getting hit hard. I will keep fishing for the answer. But until then the board will be up and down until it is all figured out.

The host gave me a list of IP's.... But the problem was that the server was getting hit so hard that I could not get in to the backend fast enough to block the IP addresses before the server restarted. So it was a terrible cycle of maxing out the CPU and Memory.

The CPU would jump to over 100 when a normal level is between 1-3. Right now the CPU is at .52 and over the last 15min is it .55.... Obviously WAY lower than 118 which was the highest number I saw.

So keep your fingers crossed that I have blocked the right IP addresses.
