Totally agree with your observations, Lancaster. I'll add that I really liked the way the Gophers came alive in the 3rd. It seemed like the Buckeyes were running out of gas, more and more as the period progressed, which allowed the Gophers to press the issue as the period wore on. Could have easily tied it at the end.

Hopefully they'll learn from it and make the necessary adjustments. Will need smarter play and max effort from the opening puck drop when they take on UMD next weekend.

I tried to find the Gopher- OSU games on FloHockey both last Saturday and Sunday and could not find them. Likewise, I don't see them now in the archive. (Maybe I'm just missing what is there)
That was OK for me because I also have BTN+.

But I thought Flo was supposed to carry all WCHA women's games. Apparently, to get all the games you need to get both services.

I believe FloHockey is streaming all of the UMD, Mankato, Bemidji and St. Cloud games. That includes this coming weekend's games when UMD hosts the Gophers. This past weekend's Gopher-OSU games were streamed by BTN+. They are also scheduled to stream the two Wisconsin/Gopher games on December 4th and 5th. As of now I don't believe the two Gopher at Ohio State games on December 11 and 12 are scheduled to be streamed by anyone. Hope that changes!

I was confused about that as well. The original agreement between FloSports and BTN+ was supposed to be for four years, with this being the fourth year, but they haven't had any BTN+ contrent this year. I would guess with all the Covid stuff, the Big Ten wanted to keep control of all their content and bought their way out of the contract.

The Wisconsin at Ohio State games this weekend are on the BTN+ schedule. That's a hopeful sign the Gopher games in Columbus will be as well :good2:

Word on the street is Gabbie Hughes may be MIA this weekend for UMD due to an upper body injury.
Ms Hughes is their best player and a particular Gopher killer.
So if she doesn't play are we:
happy because with their best player out, we presumably have an easier path to victory
or
disappointed because we want to beat them at their best
:conf2:

I don't like to see anyone get injured and not able to play. How about our No. 16, will she be in the lineup this weekend?

After one it's 2-0 UMD. Their first goal came on a shot from the point that apparently hit a Gopher and deflected up and in. Their second was scored on a hard wrist shot from the faceoff dot. Bench appeared to be screened on the play. After a slow start the Gophers picked up the pace and had some good looks, but so far have nothing to show for it.

Gophers get within one on a goal by Abigail Boreen. They definitely had the better of the play in the 2nd, now outshooting the Bulldogs 27-15 through two periods.

Elsewhere in the WCHA Ohio State upset the BADgers 3-2.

Great comeback win for the Gophers tonight, coming back from a two goal deficit to beat the Bulldogs 4-2. Abbey Murphy with the tying goal to tie it at 2-2 followed by Anne Cherkowski who got the game winner (both with their first goals as Golden Gophers). Catie Skaja with the empty netter to seal it.

Brain fart from UMD sending the puck from behind their own net to Nicholson at the point with 2 minutes to go sets up the game winner for the Gophers.

I’m not sure what I think about this game except I’m glad we pulled it out.

Not many games, and only 14 teams, but Wisconsin is 14th OF THE 14 TEAMS

Lauren Bench has faced more shots than any goaltender in the country

Good game today!

Again, I'm very excited about the freshmen! Josey Dunne and Audrey Wethington have been major contributors. I wasn't aware they were that highly acclaimed coming in. Five freshman are a huge part of this team right now.

I don't know if Abigail Boreen was the most improved Gopher last year, but for sure she was greatly improved over her freshman year. It seems she may have taken another leap this year! She's looks pretty darn good thru two series this year.

I have not felt this good about Gopher goaltending since Leveille. Lauren Bench has been fantastic.

The Gophers women's game vs OSU for next weekend is postponed because OSU did not have the minimum number of players to compete due to covid.

That is the healthy active roster. With covid, the number of healthy players fall below the minimum numbers. Todd's tweet is a could be interpreted a couple of ways.

Right. How I read this is... At full strength, OSU is at 17 skaters and 4 goalies. Minimum for a game is 15 skaters, so if they have 3 out, they can't play.

If that's actually correct, my semi-obvious question is why they don't have more people on the roster? Is the roster short because 2020? If not, would they honestly expect to never have more than 2 skaters out due to injury or something at any point in the season?

So, kind of entertaining there in the second period with 15 breakaways and odd man rushes with no one able to convert.

Kind of a good game in that Mankato is sticking it to the Gophers. Mavs outshot the Gophers 15-6 in the first, that seemed a little flukish. They outshot the Gophers 14-7 in the second and that was more like what the heLL are the Gophers doing?

Very unimpressive performance. Lauren Bench stopping everything and Minnesota leads 1-0 after two.

Gophers picked up their game in the 3rd and end up winning 5-1, scoring three goals in about a minute and a half. They did end up getting outshot 41-28 which should never happen against a perennially bad team like Minnesota State.

Northeastern beat BC today. It was their first game of the year. They are ranked ahead of the Gophers.

I hope we have a second half of the season, and I hope we have a post season. I definitely want to keep watching the Gophs play and I would like us to win the national championship.

But, I’m going to say at this early date, that if there is a national champion this year there should be an asterisk with it.

But I’d still like us to win it :biggrin2:

I tuned in to Bemidji vs St Cloud on Flo. That announcer that Bemidji has is good. I think she is a nice asset to the women’s BSU hockey program.

Looking for improved Gopher play, starting with the opening puck drop in about 30 minutes. Most impressive Gopher up front yesterday was Abigail Boreen. She's been awesome so far in this young season.
And we wouldn't be where we are now without the outstanding play by Lauren Bench in goal. I hope we don't have to rely on that to continue in order to come out on top this evening.

Yes, Boreen has been great. I think she improved tremendously from her freshman year to last year. And she seems to have made a similar leap so far this year.

Players are supposed to get better as the years go by, but Ms Abigail seems to have done that on steroids :D

so to speak!

I thought it was a much better game tonight than yesterday. I thought the Mavs even played better tonight.

Terrible penalty by Wemple at 14 min for the Mavs. We should have made them pay.

Gophs win 2-1.

I agree. Much better game by both teams, at least defensively. Each team did a good job at limiting the number of Grade A scoring chances. But the Gophers need to improve to find ways to score more goals from close in. Two goals "For" probably won't be enough to beat the likes of Wisconsin, Northeastern and/or Princeton IF the Gophs manage to get that far and qualify for an NCAA berth, and do whatever is required to advance toward an NCCA Championship in this crazy season. Just keep winning the games you can control and let the chips fall where they may.

I thought it was a much better game tonight than yesterday. I thought the Mavs even played better tonight.

Terrible penalty by Wemple at 14 min for the Mavs. We should have made them pay.

Gophs win 2-1.
But the Gophers need to improve to find ways to score more goals from close in.
You got that right. Who really can score on this team? Even Grace doesn’t seem to score anywhere near as much as she should. I keep hoping Heise will start scoring, but when?

Amy P always had trouble finishing until partway through last year she finally started to score goals to match the quality of the rest of her game. Hopefully she’ll be back after the first. (Hopefully games will resume after the first!)

Maybe Cherkowski and Murphy can start to light it up.

Murphy seems to be trying to push the envelope to find ways to create scoring that used to work for her in juniors. Same with Cherkowski v.s Minnesota high School competition. But obviously, trying to duplicate what worked before, D1 is a huge step up defensively, even against the likes of perennial also-rans like the Minnesota Mavericks-Mankato which continue to close the gap every year.
St, Cloud State shouldn't be further behind.

2nd half schedule is finally out

Starting Monday Jan 4 we have four games in the first week with 2 vs UMD and 2 vs St Cloud. Hopefully the games will be played. I wouldn't mind starting 2021 in a positive way :)

Any scuttlebutt about the team? Now just six days until the season resumes, against UMD no less. Hope everyone (including Amy P.) is healthy and ready to go!

This is from an article dated December 1st and isn’t very detailed, but it’s all I’ve seen in print anywhere. Hopefully her return is that early.

Tella Junges only scratch

I'm hopeful about the lines, I like the look. I'm particularly hoping for Heise and Oden to turn on some scoring charm.

No score after one. Shots 11-6 Gophers, but just a handful of quality chances. Rust is evident, but to be expected after such a long layoff.

Hopefully the Gophers can pick up the pace in the 2nd.

Huskies score on the power play to go up 1-0 after two. Gophers hold a commanding 29-16 edge in SOG but the majority have been long distance from the point. Need more close-in pressure to get that tying goal.

Gophers come back to win a close one, 2-1 on a goal off the faceoff. Zumwinkle had both of the Gophers' goals. Final shot margin was 42-25 Minnesota.

Amy Potomak showed some awfully sweet moves. Not a surprise but a nice reminder.

And what is the deal with Abigail Boreen? We've been talking about her a lot.......
......Steve Stricker won comeback player of the years two years in a row on the PGA tour a few years back. A very odd stat.

I think Abigail Boreen has already won most improved player for this year, and I think she was deserving of the honor last year as well. She is just so much more effective than I ever thought possible from her freshman season it's fantastic :dup:

Stats usefulness right now is pretty limited, but I will share anyway:
Grace Zumwinkle leads the country in goals scored, goals per game, shots and shots per game.

We do need some scoring studs on this team, good for you Grace!

She easily could have had four goals today, with two very near misses when she came across the front of the net all alone. But credit goes to the Huskies' tender for stopping her both times.

I watched a lot of the Wisconsin-OSU game yesterday and found myself rooting for the Buckeyes. It was a good game the Buckeyes could have easily won, but I think Wisconsin deserved the come from behind win.

Muzzerall was a Gopher coach for 5 years. The five years when the Gophers won 4 national championships. I won't try to give her credit for the 4 nattys, but it may not be a total coincidence. She has shown she is more than a 2nd asst in a program. It seems at Ohio State she establishes an "if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen" culture and a few choose to leave. I often reflect and suspect that Kelly Pannek would not have had such a weak senior season if Muzzy was coaching the forwards. I'm very curious what the Buckeyes look like when Maltais-Skaggs-Schepers leave. They are seniors this year, I wonder if they return for the extra season of eligibility?

Speaking of other WCHA teams, Scanlon's been at Bemidji I think 7 years and Harrington at Mankato 5 years. That's some nice stability for the programs and they both are doing a pretty good job at places not easy to win. Crowell at UMD is a good replacement for the insanity of her predecessor. St Cloud looked good against the Gophers Thursday. St Thomas could be very viable and able to recruit successfully.

So, if the schools can stabilize the financials, WCHA women's hockey may be a thriving and better than ever league heading into seasons when the pandemic fades away hopefully into history.
