Women's hockey
Wisconsin's goalie has just set the NCAA consecutive shutout record. The streak is at 452 minutes and counting.
That comes out to about 7.5 games of shutout.

That's been out there a while, sounds like Gopher assistant Nadine Muzerall will be the new coach.

Beavers played them tough last year at home as well, losing 1-2 in both games.

Interesting given that they had refused to broadcast the women's side for as long as they did. Not sure if this means anything dire is going on with FSN's bottom line, but this is great news for us fans for at least the immediate future.

No student broadcast feed to pick up maybe. I'm guessing they are looking to do this dirt cheap. That would explain the number of St. Cloud games.

Per "ARM" on the USCHO Women's Forum: "St. Cloud plays in an arena that is already set up for TV and is close for the Minneapolis crews. The two road games are likely just convenient dates."

Not exactly true, but a good approximation. I have season tickets reserved, but in a corner where the Gophers shoot twice. So those are definitely not GA. But for most games, i.e. excluding Wisconsin and league playoffs, you can buy GA's for $8 ($5 for seniors and young kids) and pretty much sit anywhere, until of course you are asked to move.

Re: Women's hockey
Took the family to the Gopher Women's Hockey game this afternoon vs. Bemidji. First period was pretty much dead even, but the Gophers dominated the 2nd and 3rd and won 4-0. Shots were something like 51-17, but it was only a 1-0 game until halfway through the third period. Not a lot of quality scoring chances until late in the game.
Unlike the previous 3-4 years, this team has flaws and is beatable. Don't get me wrong... they're still very good, but they don't seem to have a lot of finishers after the first line. For having 51 shots, the BSU goalie didn't have to make very many spectacular saves.

Cameranesi's injury looked pretty bad. Went down hard without any major contact, seemed like it was her knee. Hopefully it's not as bad as it looked.
Today's game is on FSN at 2.

I'm fearing the worst. Losing our leading goal scorer for the rest of the season would obviously be a severe blow.
Also, on another forum someone posted that Agnew may not play again this season? Can anyone confirm one way or the other?

Just watched the stream of the Breck/Edina game. Zumwinkle scored 3 to give Breck a 4-1 lead late in the 2nd period, but Edina's depth wore Breck down and they came back to win 5-4 in OT. Zumwinkle now has 24 goals in just 9 games; easy to see why she was selected for the USA camp at such a young age.

Don't get mad girls - get even. You will likely have to face them and/or Whiskey in playoffs so get ready now.
Parity is returning to the women's side of the sport ...

From the games I've watched this year, they are still a good team, but very beatable. They don't get enough production outside of their top line. The top line has combined for 115 points this season. The players on the second line are always changing in and out, but any second line combination would have about 30 points or less. The lack of scoring depth is a problem.

They have missed on too many of their recent recruits, particularly on their current freshman class. And they haven't been getting the kind of consistent goaltending that they did under Leveille and Raty. Other defensive stalwarts such as Stecklein and Wolfe have not been playing up to the high expectations that they've set for themselves either. So lately it's a combination of things, and hopefully they will be able to regroup and get things back on track. But even if they do, this team is simply not as talented as it's been the past few years. To get to the Frozen Four in March they will need some bounces, in addition to improved play and all-out effort from everyone on the roster.
Fortunately, help is on the way. I believe all six of the 2017-18 recruiting class will have a positive impact on the team's success next season. But first things first, starting with this weekend at home vs. the Buckeyes.

With the exception of Potomak, the sophomore class hasn't done squat either. They have a lot of exciting players coming in the next few years, but largely whiffing on 2 classes in a row is pretty baffling for this program.

I agree. Still time for players on both classes to step up, but the lack of raw talent is puzzling, and disappointing. Hard to imagine where this team would be without #19 junior Kelly Pannek. She's carrying the team right now.

Re: Women's hockey
I don't think you can.blame this years freshman class too much when the best one tore an acl in November. She would be making a big difference.
Whether or not people wanted to believe it or not, this was always going to be a "down" year for the Gophers. You don't graduate what you did and expect to stay at that high of a level.
But I fully expect next years freshmen class to go down with last years seniors as some of the best classes the U has ever had. Frankly Zumwinkle and Potomak could play on our second line right now.

It is pretty tough to sustain that level of excellence every single year. You know they won't stay "down" for long.

At 16-5-2 and still highly ranked they haven't fallen that far. Peters has zero confidence in net right now and that is having an affect on the rest of the lineup. The freshmen class is getting pretty solid play from the 2 defensemen and you can definitely see the skill in Agnew and with her it's just a matter of time before it clicks. Woken is also a very good player. The sophomore class, in reality, is a small one as a few of the players like Gunderson and Smith are really just roster fill-ins for running a full practice. Potomak, Williamson, and Skarzinkski are the main three and Williamson is the one that is hard to figure as far as her production. Maybe more important is the non production defensively that they are getting from 2 of the senior class in Haley and Cline. Both are liabilities on defense, so much so with Haley that she plays forward, albeit sparingly.
The good news is they are capable of playing better and have a lot of players with post-season experience. If they get any kind of competence in net they will be a factor.

Re: Women's hockey
The women had to come from behind in the 3rd period tonight to beat a very mediocre Ohio State team 2-1 at home. A win is a win, but they're definitely not up to their usual standards over at Ridder these days.
