U.S. beats Switzerland 3-0 in their opening game of the IIHF World Championships. Next game with Finland Sunday evening at 8:30 on NHL Network.

If you watch Sunday’s game keep an eye on number 9 for the Finns. There may be an :M: in her future.

WCHA Women are not on the Flo or BTN+ schedule thus far. I wonder who will be carrying?

Since the U is not letting me in Ridder this year, it's especially important

Given they already have 8 D, I don't know what role they would have for a transfer from D-III. Unless they were going to play that system that Providence used sometimes under Bob Deraney where they played 3 defense, I think 9 is too many.

Very disappointing the way they were "manhandled" by the Canadians. First half of the game the U.S. was totally outplayed, and dare I say outcoached? From the opening puck drop it was obvious which team wanted it more. Hopefully the U.S. can turn the tables on them in the Gold Medal game, but from what I saw tonight I'm not optimistic.

Here’s the lowlights

Quarterfinals on Saturday:
  • Russia vs. Switzerland 11:30
  • USA vs. Japan 2:30
  • Canada vs. Germany 6:00
  • Finland vs. Czech Republic 9:30
The U.S. and Canada games should be on NHL Network, not sure about the other two.

It can happen. The US women's team beating the Canadians is infinitely more likely than, say, a 1980 miracle.

Besides, hockey is a weird sport. We see weekend series all the time in college hockey when one team beats an opponent 8-1 on a Friday and then loses 1-0 the next night. As long as they are close in talent, the lesser of two teams wins a significant percentage of games. Hell, Minnesota got blown off the ice by Wisconsin twice last season before beating them when it matter most.

Canada was certainly due. I think I heard that the last time Canada defeated the US in regulation at Worlds was in something like 2009, back in the days when Darwitz was still playing. The final score could easily have been much closer, as both Decker and Kessel had glorious chances that they didn't finish, but the game wasn't even as close as the lopsided score that we ended up with.

I thought that the D in particular struggled mightily last night. I don't care for the two BC D being paired together, as they both like to get involved in the offense and aren't quick enough to recover once they do. Harvey will be a great player eventually, but for now, her game is full of the errors of youth. Other than Stecklein, I though they needed more poise last night.

Offensively, if Decker's line isn't going to produce any more than they have thus far, then I'd try splitting them up. There is enough youth on this team that you can't afford to have a line of people on the brink of being three-time Olympians who aren't scoring like a first line. Especially on the power play, they look stale.

Although didn't Canada infuse a lot of first-timers (youth) into their lineup?

Also, any updates on the status of Kelly Pannek?

I was thinking the same thing when looking at the list of teams in this tournament. They won Olympic silver in 2006, and what are they doing now? Maybe playing in some lower-level events with countries like Norway, Poland, Austria, and anyone else who really doesn't play women's hockey.

They hired a terrible head coach and then basically gave up on funding their women's national program.

They have a knack of being able to create point-blank opportunities, often with a wide open trailer. Tonight they easily could have scored 5 or 6.

Colgate games look like they’ll be ESPN+
Nashville games I bet will be LiveBarn again. That was very bad but I thought it was better than nothing

There's speculation in the other thread as to whether ESPN has UM ranked too low. One of the teams he has above the Gophs is Princeton. W/o Sarah Fillier and Claire Thompson, I'm not sure if the Tigers are a tourney team. It will depend on what their two latest recruiting classes look like, minus Lacey Eden.

Even w/o the pair of Gophers that are centralized, I still expect them to make the NCAAs. Even the bad math of the PairWise figure to be friendlier to them than last year's committee, assuming they can figure out a way to win a game now and then.

Hard to know what to expect from some teams, such as Cornell that graduated a lot of their producers two years ago and will look vastly different than when they finished ranked #1.

GWH 2.0

1-We have a lot of players that should have headroom to be better than they have been. Whole team has been shell-shocked by missing the national tournament. Other programs are “officially” better than us.

2-Coaches have been changed. New attitudes should be in place. Winning would be sweeter than ever. It will be interesting to watch. I hope it will be fun to watch :D

That was one of the best "meet the newcomers: I have read.

Like how she mentioned Crystalyn Hengler and Taylor Heise as individuals that helped with her decision to transfer.

I expected last year’s roster to be good enough to potentially bring us back up.
I expected the defensemen to be very good.
I expected one of our defensemen, in particular, to be absolutely shutdown.

I was wrong across the board.

It’s strange to feel so completely in the dark about what to expect from our team heading into the season. I believe one of our most promising new forwards was going to redshirt. With the transfers out and players being centralized my guess is she will play. With everything that is new about this team, maybe I can ratchet down expectations and enjoy watching them play and allow them time to develop over the season.

Last season, after the new year I had to numb myself emotionally before the games so I wouldn’t get so angry and irritated. (I still wanted to watch). Hopefully those days are over.

I think anything is possible from the games vs the Buckeyes this weekend.

I've watched the ladies play, and it's a good brand of hockey. You have a next-level interest.

Curious, do you have roots in women's/girl's hockey?

The winning streak originally got my attention. The first game I watched all the way through was the triple overtime national quarterfinal win over UND when they were 38-0 in 2013 :D GWH has been my favorite sports team ever since.

I do have a relative playing women’s D1 out east, and a relative who coached a girls HS team in MN. But that was after I became a fan…lol

I thought it was this thread (but cannot find the post) but I finally found the 'source' of the claim that UST was out-recruiting MN and the names tossed out were Boerger, Brown, Devries and Hause. I have no idea if those are considered major losses or not but thought it would be fair to at least circle back.
Currently under construction.

I don't follow women's hockey, but how could Frost go from being the golden boy who hung banners year after year to being out recruited by an upstart tiny college?

St Thomas could become a legitimate player in women's hockey in short order. Minnesota (along with Ontario) supplies a disproportionate number of players to the D1 ranks and lots of them could prefer St Thomas to Bemidji, St Cloud, and Mankato. Regardless of how St Thomas competes against Minnesota and the other powers for players.

But at this point GWH is attempting to make up the ground lost to Wisconsin and Ohio State. Lots to wring hands over without fretting over St Thomas. Assuming we are going to lose in the trade of Coaches Johnson/Brausen for Darwitz/Bobrowski is definitely premature.

Emily Brown hangs the Gophers out to dry.

3 penalties early in the first kills momentum. 1-1.

One period into the season, Gophers look great!
4 penalties are bad, I assume that’s a fluke (or will be cleaned up).

Emily Brown’s f*** up is not OK. Egregious defensive errors is what we’ve had for 5 years, and is part of what has to stop.

1-1.

Hemp, Conner and Huber look promising out of the gate for the Gophers.

Bad defense on goal #2, giving up a 3 on 1 leads to goal number 3.

Defensive breakdowns, not finishing carrying over from previous years.

Darwitz will teach our guys to finish, and will convince Taylor Heise the target is the back of the net and not the belly button of the goal tender.

3-1 Ohio State after two. But so far enough is encouraging, not discouraging, for me.

4-2 Ohio State wins.

We are going to need our new players to be good, and they looked good for the first game. Lots of problems carried over from last year, but that’s not too surprising.

Hopefully we see Skylar Vetter tomorrow.

She scored on it in a shootout versus the BADgers 2(?) years ago.
