How much revenue does each tournament generate (during covid)? Surely it's a financial decision across the board.

Huge congrats (and best of luck) to Joel!

Curious as to why Bob Corkum "stepped down from his role" less than a month away from the 2021 Women's Worlds. Seems odd.
Apparently he didnt like the COVID restrictions like wearing masks etc. Seriously. Somebody found several of his social media posts and he is very much a COVID denialist and it didnt sit well with USA Hockey.

All for naught now.

I tried to renew my season tickets three times! Unsuccessful!

Didn't work multiple times in Safari. Didn't work in Safari disguised as Explorer.

From the 31 thoughts blog.
2. The IIHF will get going this week on finding a new home for the Women’s World Hockey Championship, cancelled last week by Nova Scotia at the absolute last second. It probably takes a couple weeks to figure out where to go and when to hold it. The desire is to keep it in Canada, but that’s not a certainty. Edmonton — which held one of last year’s playoff bubbles, this year’s World Juniors and is working on hosting a CHL draft-eligible prospects event — may rescue this one, too.

Any idea when the final cut will be made for the USA team? Obviously we wish the best of luck to Grace, but if somehow she doesn't make it we would obviously LOVE to have her back for one more season and a run for the National D1 title.

"It's a sad day but I knew it was coming sooner or later," Spehar said of Randolph's resignation. "Why? The parents. Honesty is the first step toward greatness and Mike was willing to have difficult conversations with players. But the parents have made it to where it's tough for mentors to pass along great lessons to players. We're going down a dangerous road and I think you'll see that reflected in the product."

Not about women's hockey, but maybe a broad issue, I'm passing it along from today's StarTribune FWIW

That was in the back of my mind but I think there are some very qualified candidates (especially female) that could fill the role that Johnson vacates.

I think that recruiting to UM in the state is somewhat a matter of "just don't screw this up." I think that where Joel excelled was teaching the game in basic, simple parcels. When he first returned to the Gophers, one of the returning D told her dad, "He talks to us like we're 5 years old." But by the end of her career, she and the rest of her teammates loved him.

They need a good hire to replace Johnson. Somebody who makes sense for the program. Ideally an alum with a passion for the program and hard work. There are a number of people who could be a good fit if interested, such as West, Gigi, Noora, Cameranesi. They could use someone to coach the D, so maybe Jalosuo, Bozek, or Stecklein.

It's now official but since the end of the season Frost hinted that he expected most of the seniors back. If somehow Zumwinkle doesn't get placed in the Olympic training program I would expect her back as well, but with Joel Johnson running the show I think the chance she isn't in the Olympic training group is very small.

Over the years I would not assume JJ leaving would be good for the Gophers program. But we are through five consecutive years now of Wisconsin being better than Minnesota. The Gophers feel stale to me. I would like to see some spark. Someone other than Abigail Boreen be a pleasant surprise and look like they are improving. Maybe have the team look like more than the sum of the parts.

So, for now, at least this will shake things up a bit.

Well said. Could not agree more. There is a LOT riding on the selection of the Assistant/Assistant Head Coach position who will hopefully provide a spark.

Goaltender room is very crowded which is like when you have 2 or 3 quarterbacks, you don't really have a quarterback? Or in the Gopher's case, a goaltender?

I think they are still hoping Vetter will turn into that #1. Bench is back and brought stability to the room but she's not a stud goalie in the Raty or Levielle class.
I think they had higher hopes for Pahl, but so far she has been just ok--a career #2 not your stud. King has always been a practice goalie.

Hopefully Vetter can step in and become that 1b to Bench this season and become the true #1 headed into 2022-23.

Historically Black College Tennessee State is checking into becoming the first HBCU to play D1 men's and women's hockey. Supported by the Nashville Predators (don't have details on what that means).

No Grace Zumwinkle? I assume that's due to her making the IIHF "initial roster" of 25 players (3 goalies, 8 defense and 14 forwards).
Question: If she is named to the "final roster" would that mean just for the IIHF tournament or would the USA roster carry over to other tournaments, including the next Olympics?
If the latter I sure would miss her playing for the Gophers one final season.

USA Hockey is centralizing 28 players for the Olympic year, and 25 out of that 28 will make the 2021 Women's Worlds team, so that's a yes. If she was one of the last cuts from the Olympic roster, technically she could come back mid-year and play the second half of the season, or she could sit out the whole year and play a full year next season, as Annie Pankowski did last Olympic cycle.

No Anne Cherkowski on the ROSTER. Assuming a transfer, but haven’t tracked down a destination yet. Too bad, she struggled through some injuries last year, but showed promise.

Hopefully someone that can identify talent early on. Saw Frosty at the “North American Female Elite Showcase” last weekend with current team director of operations Jessica Scott. Mean anything? Probably not. Milica McMillen and Emily West are a couple of alumni with assistant experience in other programs. Several ex-players are head coaches at various high school teams. I’ll jump on the reckless speculation train and toss a name out - Logan Bittle, head associate women’s coach at Robert Morris until the program was “north dakoted” and currently coaching the 19U and the 16U girls teams for the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite organization.

Jessica coached at Coon Rapids HS for a few years. So she may be being groomed to be an assistant coach at the U?

The Rubes hockey team played a lot of games against Jessica and her team the "MudHens" back in the day at the Super Rink Beer League. She was one of a few females that played in the D League. Good player... Had a lot of fun playing against her. Though I am guessing a few Rubes didn't like playing against her... She could get pretty mean out there during faceoffs. :biggrin2:

Paul Colontino was the Robert Morris coach for the last many years, dating back to when Nate Handrahan took the Ohio State job. Or maybe I'm misreading your final sentence.

If the "U" is going to add someone with Pennsylvania ties, I'd like it to be somebody more like Jen Schoullis (don't know if she has ever coached at any level). I remember Sarah Davis saying she was scared of Schoullis when she first arrived, and I don't think that she was totally joking. We could use somebody on the staff who could tell the forwards to back check such that they wouldn't need to be told twice. Until the work effort gets back to where it once was, none of the rest will matter.

There are probably many ways to look at this, but at first glance, it isn't an obvious career move. Why would someone leave the program where she played, and a coach for whom she played, to move to a program that is bound to go through some growing pains?

Possible reasons:
1) she welcomes a new challenge;
2) her days were numbered at the "U";
3) the location is better for her;
4) it's a better situation financially;
5) she'd rather work for Johnson than Frost.

The optics are concerning if this was a recruiting battle that Johnson won. I guess another possibility is that the thought is Johnson will be Olympic coach and she'll have a chance for a bigger role while he is away, but that can backfire if your bigger roles comes with a weak roster in a tough league.

Brausen officially joins Johnson at St. Thomas.
There are probably many ways to look at this, but at first glance, it isn't an obvious career move. Why would someone leave the program where she played, and a coach for whom she played, to move to a program that is bound to go through some growing pains?

Possible reasons:
1) she welcomes a new challenge;
2) her days were numbered at the "U";
3) the location is better for her;
4) it's a better situation financially;

Obviously I do not know the reality of the situation and how it will play out. She definitely seems by all accounts to be a quality person, and who knows what her learning curve is.

But simply going by the evidence of what I saw on the ice, there was nothing in what I saw of Bethany's coaching that has me mourning her leaving the Gophers.

Wow Abbey Murphy on the roster. Didn't expect that. Gophers will miss her this season.

More sightings of Jessica Scott scouting in St. Cloud this weekend. Hearing Anne Cherkowski will likely wind up out east. A few rumblings on who the other assistant/associate might be, but nothing I should get into yet.

Interesting, and totally different than rumors I had heard (guess I need some new sources :mrgreen: ). Was’t expecting Natalie in a D-1 position again until her young family got a little older. Natalie should bring a little of the fire that seemed to be lacking since Muzzy left. I know nothing about the other guy, but I have to assume that Natalie is very high on him.

”Change in mentality sought as Darwitz & Bobrowski join Gopher women's hockey staff”
Hidden Content...
Jess Myers wrote:MINNEAPOLIS — With the University of Minnesota women’s hockey team missing the NCAA playoffs for the first time in his 14 years behind their bench, and his top assistant coach departing, Gophers head coach Brad Frost knew a bold move was needed in the off-season.

On Thursday, July 29, he made two of them.

Hamline University head coach Natalie Darwitz — a Gophers hockey legend — and her top Pipers assistant coach Jake Bobrowski are moving from St. Paul to Minneapolis and will be Frost’s assistant coaches with the Gophers starting this winter.

Darwitz, 37, is one of the most decorated and renowned hockey players in Minnesota history. The Eagan, Minnesota, native played in three Olympics, won three world championship gold medals and won two NCAA titles in the three seasons she played for the Gophers. She admitted that it was a tough decision to move on from the Hamline program, but is excited for the opportunity to return to her alma mater.

“Brad painted a picture of the program and thought the way I coach and my character as a person would go along really well with what they need right now,” she said.

After working as an assistant coach for Frost in the late 2000s, Darwitz became the girls hockey head coach at Lakeville South and led the Cougars to the state tournament in 2015. From there she took over a mediocre Hamline program and had the Pipers in the NCAA Division III tournament in her third season.

Bobrowski spent seven seasons with the Pipers working with Darwitz after a successful run as the girls’ hockey coach at Hill-Murray High School. Darwitz is quick to credit him as a partner in the Pipers’ turnaround, and conveyed that to Frost in their discussions.

“Jake has obviously really worked well with Natalie when you look at their record from when they came to Hamline until now, they’ve turned that program around significantly,” Frost said. “He’s a grinder, he’s a recruiter, he’s brought some great players to Hamline, and knowing he and Natalie work so well together already, it was a really easy hire.”

The Gophers were 8-1-0 on Jan. 10 and ranked atop the national polls. They closed the season on a 3-7-1 run and in a surprise move, did not get an invite to the eight-team NCAA tournament, which was eventually won by arch-rival Wisconsin.

“That was incredibly hard to take, and it’s been some great motivation for us, our team and our program for this coming year,” Frost said. “But it was also motivation when I looked at who my staff was going to be. It’s important to get people in here that have a strong desire to win and that care deeply about our program and our values and who we are, but also really want to keep our program in the forefront in the NCAA.”

Darwitz told The Rink Live that the Gophers program is among the top five in the nation, but that is not where they expect to be, and said a goal of hers is to, “take care of business and get back to the mentality of, ‘it’s really tough to play the Gophers, it’s really scary to play the Gophers.’”

“I think that’s a reason Brad was really interested in me and Jake, because we bring that mentality and the blue-collar foundation,” Darwitz said. “Everybody should be intimidated by the ‘M’ on the chest, and right now I don’t know if that’s always the case. We’ll certainly find out in the near future, but we want to get back to the University of Minnesota being on top. It’s funny that people ask, ‘what needs to change?’ because they’re still a top five program in the country, but at the University of Minnesota, that’s not enough.”

In June, it was announced that long-time Frost assistant Joel Johnson would be the new women’s hockey head coach at St. Thomas. On Wednesday, July 28, Johnson was also named the Team USA head coach for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

I am getting the impression you won’t be able to get into games this season without a mobile device.

That is not good news for me :ddown:

But yeah digital tickets are here for good. Paper tickets are dead.

I'm all set, but just wanted to point out that over time the cost of the cell phone service becomes increasingly greater than what you pay for the phone itself. For those who wish (or need) to have both a phone and the service it's a non-issue.

Rumor has it Savannah Norcross from BC and Olivia Arkell who will be a 6th year senior from D3 Hamline will be joining the Gopher squad this season.
This was posted on the USCHO board. Saw the Norcross girl last week at Blaine during the National Festival. She would be a nice pick up, excellent speed. Arkell is a defender from Stillwater.
