St. Cloud picked up the pace in the 2nd while the Gophers reverted back to the way they played yesterday. Too many mental errors which gave the Huskies some excellent scoring chances, and they did score on one of them to cut the Gopher lead to 4-1.

We'll see which Gopher squad shows up in the 3rd.

Tough row to hoe for St Cloud to play the Gophers 3 times in 4 days!

1-0 Gophs early.

3 power plays in the 2nd period so far, they were all awful. Doesn’t seem we’re going to lose, but those were bad.

The announcers said they were told they talking too loud

I was going to comment on the anemic power play as well. As a group the D haven't really helped generate much of anything offensively. It may be time to experiment putting a talented forward back there, one each on Unit 1 and Unit 2. Anyway, we'll take the 3-0 lead heading into the 3rd.

Other "Stars" I would give to Abbey Murphy with her three assists and Lauren Bench with her 16 save shutout. :good2:

I see that Saturday's 2:00pm game in Madison is now showing up on FSN's schedule. Gopher men's (home) game will follow at 5:00. That makes it a Gopher Hockey TV doubleheader!

No idea what to expect this weekend v Wisconsin. Some improvement and more consistency would be nice.

What I'm really hoping is when it all comes out of the wash we are simply the better (best) team :D

And for now, primary thought is I hope the games are played!

2-0 BADgers after 1. Gophers started well. Had a flurry with just under 7 to go where they had 5 chances to score and couldn’t put it in.

The first goal by Wis was pretty slick.

Seems Heise should have covered Schneider on that 2nd goal rather than left her alone.

We had our chances and played OK, but 2-0 after that period Is not OK.

I thought the first goal was on Bench. Very wide angle shot that she should have easily handled without giving up a rebound. On the second she lost track of the puck and as you say Schneider was left all alone to shoot into a wide open net. At the other end Gophers had multiple chances but as you note they just couldn't bury it. That's hockey.

4-0 BADgers after 2.

Mostly Wisconsin that period. Then we started to put up a fight, didn’t score, and handed one to the BADgers late.

I hope they are learning something from this. I still get the feeling, now that we aren’t playing St Cloud, our forwards need to finish better than they do. Although, this game, the puck luck is a little bit with Wisconsin.

Agree with all of this. I also think Wisconsin looks better organized than we do. Fewer give-a-ways and a better break out.

WOW!

We came out the better team for the first 9 minutes and we let them just take us over.

I thought 5-0 against is something GWH should never see. Maybe that’s unfair.

Emily Brown has not gotten better from last year to this. I hope she’s OK.

Be nice to win tomorrow.

The final 5-0 score pretty much reflects the difference between the two teams today, nothing fluky about it. Got beat in all phases of the game. Tomorrow we'll see if the Gophers can respond and earn a split.

I think WI is notably better. We've struggled against them notably the past couple of seasons. I don't think they're 5-0 better, though they were today.

Yes, on both FSN (tv) and BTN+ (stream) at 2PM CT. Looking for a bounce back win for the split.

Here is an opportunity for the Gophers to make a statement, should they choose to accept that opportunity.

Oh well, bummer.

Shots are 6-1 Wisconsin 5 minutes into the period. How is the statement going so far?

Hopefully the coaches and players are equally unhappy. A real challenge lies ahead if the team is to right what is now a very leaky ship. And with a hugely difficult part of the schedule coming up there is not much time to patch all the leaks.

Being that GWH is rarely swept.......maybe not.. and both ranked #1 :anger:

It was hard to know what to expect heading into this series. But I didn’t expect this. I’m tempted to say more, but maybe I should just sleep on it before saying much more right now..... :M:

I looked back until 2002 and there were none from then until today that I saw. The women's team for years rarely lost more than 6 games, thus made it hard to do. The closest from those years was a year when women got swept and men lost- tied on the same weekend but that was a college showcase weekend, so it was Mich- Mich St. I did not go back further than that.
Side note-- Most of the women being swept were at the hands of either BADgers, UMD, OSU and the Whioux a couple of times.

Sometimes a mid season ass kicking is just what teams need. If Minnesota faces WI in post season, they'll have something to prove and only need to win once.

The backdoor BADgers did it to the men's team in (was it?) 1980 or 81, after the Gophers had been beating them with regularity for some time.

Absolutely. And at the end of the day, 2 wins in Erie, PA (although with a little *) is what we’re after. And one of them may need to be against them there BADgers.

Boreen with Cherkowski and Amy P, which makes me feel good in a way because, as you know, I am clearly on record for believing Boreen has been the most improved Gopher two years running :-o

Score is 2-2 after one, goals by Murphy and Zumwinkle Shots on goal are 13-11 Gophers, but they'll have to kill most of a penalty called late in the period. The Buckeyes did cash in on their first power play chance.

I've watched quite a few games this season, and this is the worst of the bunch. Fixed long distant camera, looking through glass and a net, and no announcer. Hard to tell who has the puck at times. Buckeyes need a new rink!

The Ohio State University has a very good women’s hockey team and a lot of money, and they are not taking care of that program.

Seen too many. You cannot mess with the puck while stationary on the blueline! She is so talented in all other respects.

Otherwise a pretty good period by the visiting team. Up 4-3 with a tiny 25-24 edge in shots. They are trying hard, giving it their all from what I can tell. But these teams are very even, and anything could happen in the 3rd.

Gophers win 7-4! Both teams fought real hard, and there were many more penalties than we're used to seeing. But we'll gladly take the series opener win, on the road against a very good opponent.

The Athletic has an article today "Projecting the 2022 United States women’s Olympic hockey roster" and Hannah Brandt is not on it, and it does not mention her to say why she is not on it.

Is she healthy? I am not up to date on how she has been playing.

She may not have been as effective an international player so far as she was a D1 player. To me, she was such an absolutely great Gopher that I am not ready to pencil her out!

Well it's only a projection so I wouldn't rule her out just yet! How she does in the pre-Olympic camp (assuming of course she's invited) and in any pre-Olympic games will determine whether or not she makes the team.

Eastern bias. The author's bio says she is NYC based, so she hasn't seen what we've seen over the years.

Are other players "injured" as well, or do they have a limited roster this year. I see they are playing short tonight. I admit, I don't follow them as closely as I should until the playoffs. Also, they flew on the same plane as the mens team last week, so.....

Unless it's Co-Vid or some other illness, No. 11 is a surprise.

When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the country you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.

Gophers played pretty well, but pretty well is not enough when you're playing Wisconsin. I thought the Gophers' effort was real strong, especially in the 1st period, but they may have worn themselves down, sometimes chasing the play at full speed when they would have been just as well off not chasing. They were obviously spent in the 3rd, which allowed the BADgers to take control and possess the puck as they looked for scoring chances...and they eventually capitalized.

Gophs did a much better job with the 3 on 3. Actually had the better of the chances. But no score, so going to a shootout.

It was even "funner" to see the Gophers finally beat their hated rival. :goldykill:

The tears are flowing on the frozen ground of Grand Forks today. This will give Brad about 4 weeks of content for the Herald.

Amongst the many bummers of UND dropping women's hockey..Brad was the only newspaper hockey beat writer in the country that "covered" women's hockey in a consistent, respectful manner.

IMHO

I considered the Wisconsin series successful only in the sense that maybe it was a step in the right direction. Generally, we did play pretty well. Not parlaying the first game into a victory was not good. For the weekend I thought we had the puck luck but still had no victories.

Objective number one vs Ohio State is don't let them out compete -‘outwork’- the Gophers. Every time we play them, at least one game looks like the Buckeyes are outcompeting us.

Game today is at 4. Bratwurst will be prepared during intermission between the second and third period :D
