Women's team recruiting

Post by Iceburg » Thu Jul 24 12:43 am

The women get their second goalie recruit of the week in Stoney Creek, Ontario's Serena D'Angelo. She's a '98 birth year and will likely be a 2016 recruit. Played this past year for the Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres.

Stoney Creek is right by Hamilton.

As we've redone and downsized the recruiting links a bit, I thought I'd start this thread as a catch-all for women's team recruiting stuff I stumble across. I think that is a case of the blind leading the blind. One guy using the gossip of another guy.

That could very well be the case...Although the other listings have validity and Dunne's sister is going to be a freshmen for Ohio State, so I supposed it is not out of the realm of possibility.

It is interesting that Dunne, herself, has not tweeted out any kind of announcement which is pretty common so I guess time will tell.

If there is any truth to it, it would be the quietest commitment from a high end player that I've seen in a while. I realize women's hockey doesn't get the same attention but still...

Definitely a quiet commitment but there seems to be enough credibility that the "blind leading the blind" and "mostly HS kids who can't put a sentence together" statements seem a bit presumptuous.

If you believed every random poster with little to no history of accuracy on such things, you'd might also end up believing the world is flat, JFK and Jim Morrison are having drinks on a beach somewhere, and we never landed on the moon. Maybe you aren't a skeptic (which is fine) but I tend to want to see a little more than that. Especially in the day of twitter, etc. No comment from her about it, no comment from her sister about it, no media comment on it, etc.? This is possibly the top recruit (or certainly top few recruits) in the nation. No comment at all from anybody? Something seems a tad amiss there.

I'm not saying it absolutely can't be true but it would be extremely odd to have somebody say she committed a month ago like on that HS board and not have one hockey or media person (or somebody affiliated with her) say anything to confirm it.

The info on the USCHO college thread is generally pretty accurate. I've not seen one in quite some time that was not true, at least for the local kids. Agree that it's odd there would be no confirmation from the player but I also don't think it's just some random kid making stuff up.

SIgh...Seriously?

Look, all I said initially was "there is information out there". I was questioned about that information and gave what I had seen. I never commented one way or another about said information until Bonin21 and you made your comments. Neely's post sums up pretty well what I think of the information.

I'm not sure you were questioned about anything (it wasn't about you... it was about one guy using the HS board as his reasoning on another board) as much as we simply said the info out there was a tad flimsy compared to the usual sources. The closest thing I have seen is what Iceburg posted after but I'm not even sure who puts that info together and how they do it.

Meh, I took it that way but that's probably just me being overly sensitive to the fact that I don't have a sub 5 second 40 time.

Dunne's committent to Ohio State, if true, is a bit curious from a hockey standpoint. Her options should have been/maybe still are, unlimited in the context of women's college hockey programs. Ohio State's program? Crappy facilities and mediocre at best but maybe the lure of playing on the same team as her sister and raising the level of the program up from mediocre is the challenge she wants.

The USA Hockey Women's National Festival took place Aug. 12-16 at the Lake Placid Olympic Center in Lake Placid, New York.

The roster features eight players who helped the 2014 U.S. Women's National Under-18 Team earn a silver medal at the International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Women's World Championship in Budapest, Hungary. They are Grace Bizal (Minnetonka, Minn.), Jincy Dunne (O'Fallon, Mo.), Rebecca Gilmore (Wayland, Mass.), Caitrin Lonergan (Roslindale, Mass.), Patricia Marshall (Thief River Falls, Minn.), Abby Roque (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.), Melissa Samoskevich (Sandy Hook, Conn.) and Sophie Skarzynski (Wilmette, Ill.).

The 22 players represent 13 different states. Minnesota leads the pack with seven representatives, Massachusetts has three and Illinois has two. California, Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Washington, and Wisconsin each have one.

All games from the series are being streamed live and are available at usahockey.fasthockey.com.

NOTES: The 2014 U.S. Women's Under-18 Select Team will practice in Lake Placid on Aug. 17-18 prior to heading to Canada. The three-game series vs. Canada is an annual event between the two countries and has been held each August since 2007. Reagan Carey (Colorado Springs, Colo.), USA Hockey's director of women's hockey, is the general manager of the 2014 U.S. Women's Under-18 Select Team ... Joel Johnson (White Bear Lake, Minn.), associate head coach of the University of Minnesota women's ice hockey team, was named head coach of the U.S. Women's Under-18 Team for the 2014-15 seasons on May 20, 2014 ... Joining him as assistant coaches are Katie Lachapelle (Winthrop, Mass.), assistant women's ice hockey coach at Boston University, and Brent Hill (Troy, N.Y.), assistant women's ice hockey coach at Merrimack College.

Four future Gophers (Alex Woken, Sophie Skarzynski, Patricia Marshall and Alex Gulstene) on the U.S. TEAM and one (Sarah Potomak) on the CANADIAN TEAM.

Of the other Minnesotans on the U.S. team, two are uncommited (to my knowledge) at this point, Natalie Snodgrass (sophomore at Eastview) and Grace Bowlby (sophomore at Edina).

Girl's Elite League has their end of the season NIT tournament at Fogerty Arena in Blaine starting tomorrow (SCHEDULE). Future Gophers playing will include Patti Marshall and Alex Woken (SSM U-19), Katie Robinson (Team Red) and Sophie Skarzynski (Chicago Mission U-19). Gopher recruit Taylor Williamson has missed the Elite League season up to this point recovering from some off-season surgery. Not sure if she is ready to play yet or not.

Gopher women apparently pick up a commitment from Minnetonka junior forward Kippin Keller. Up to this point she probably seemed like a more likely soccer prospect as she had been a member of the Minnesota Thunder Academy. She played hockey at Benilde last year.

Here are the future recruits to the best of my knowledge.

2015
G Emma May (Cretin)
F Sarah Potomak (Pursuit of Excellence 19U) from Aldergrove, British Columbia
D Sophie Skarzynski (Chicago Mission 19U) from Wilmette, Illinois
F Taylor Williamson (Edina) daughter of former Gopher Deano Williamson and granddaughter of former Gopher Murray Williamson

2016
G Serena D'Angelo (Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) from Stoney Creek, Ontario
F Kippin Keller (Minnetonka)
D Patti Marshall (Shattuck) from Thief River Falls
D Katie Robinson (Dodge County) from Kasson
F Alex Woken (Shattuck) from Fargo

2017
G Alex Gulstene (North American Hockey Academy)
have seen both Evanston, Illinois and North Vancouver as Ms. Gulstene's home town
F Grace Zumwinkle (Breck)

After the Girl's Elite League NIT tournament in Blaine this past weekend girls from the league have been picked to form two teams (plus one team of younger girls for the younger bracket) that will go to the "USA Canada Cup" in Detroit this coming weekend. High school practice begins on Monday (I believe) so this will be the last of the big talent showcases involving the local high school girls this summer/fall season.

Saw a U10A game out at Dakotah rink on Saturday and noticed a Hankinson jersey for Edina. Wonder if Frost has been talking to the parents, seems like a slam dunk recruit.

She was one of three '98 birth years on the Canadian team (ROSTER) in the recent IIHF U-18 World Championships. She also was the leading scorer in the U.S.-Canada three game series last summer in Calgary (LINK).

From the list above, I'd single out Potomak. She is WCHA Rookie of the Year caliber, an award which both Brandt and Cameranesi won.

A few tidbits from the world of Gopher women's recruits....

Three recruits advance to next weeks Girl's State Tournament - Edina senior forward Taylor Williamson, Minnetonka junior forward Kippin Keller and Blaine sophomore defenseman Emily Brown.

The Canada Winter Games, an every-four-year, multi-sport, Olympic style competition starts today in Prince George, British Columbia. Women's hockey is for '97 birth years and younger. Two future Gophers are taking part - 2015 recruit Sarah Potomak (along with younger sister Amy) are on the British Columbia team and 2016 recruit Lindsay Agnew is playing for Team Ontario. Tournament results and stats can be followed HERE.

Looks like the era of "no more free pass" for Shattuck teams advancing to nationals begins next Saturday when the Girl's Prep Team (with 2016 recruits Patti Marshall and Alex Woken) plays the Bauer-Emerson Revolution (formerly Achiever Academy) in a one game "state playoff" for (I'm assuming) the right to advance to the "USA Hockey" national tournament starting March 24 in Green Bay. The game is at Wakota Arena in South St. Paul at 4:50 p.m.

Future Gophers Lindsay Agnew and Serena D'Angelo invited to Canada's U-18 summer camp which is the first step in the road to the national team for next year's World U-18 tournament. Another familiar name is Amy Potomak, sister of incoming recruit Sarah Potomak. (CAMP ROSTER)

Local girls start on the same path this coming weekend as Selects starts Friday in Plymouth. (ROSTERS & SCHEDULES) Gopher recruits Patti Marshall, Grace Zumwinkle, Emily Brown and Taylor Wente are among the girls taking part.

Selects for boys also kicks off this weekend in Plymouth. I'll try to have some info on that tomorrow.

The lady Gophers...The "process" is working and producing wins by the bucketful.

A question was asked about Jincy Dunne and her commitment to Ohio State which was made more interesting by the sudden departure of their coach. I don't know if it means anything for Dunne but Mikaela Gardner, who is also committed to Ohio State next year, is considering other options...Check that has in fact de-committed based on info posted on USCHO.

Looks like the plan for the girls going through the Selects process is a little different this year. Some go to St. Cloud and some go to Maine.
the "Minnesota Hockey" site wrote:The girls selected will also be split into two groups. The first group of girls will be invited to the Under-18 Select 66 Camp on June 27 - July 3 in Biddeford, Maine, where they will have the opportunity to compete for a roster spot on the 2016 US Women's Under-18 team. In addition, another 39 girls will be attending the USA Hockey Under-18 Player Development Camp in St. Cloud, MN on July 8 - 14.

The girls heading to the Maine camp are..........
