Emma Conner scores five goals last night.

Leading the state in goal scoring now, I don't think there's a better player in the state.
That could be but Hemp from Andover would be in the conversation.
Edina 6, Chaska/Chanhassen 2
Vivian Jungles, with 2 goals and 4 assists, figured in all of Edina's 6 goals. Pretty fair night, I'd say.
In total points for the season it's Jungles 32, Connor 30. Combined their 62 is 37% of the team's total for the season to date.

So, I posted the stuff below back after Emma Conner switched her commitment from Penn State to Minnesota. Listening to some of the interviews in the Youth Hockey Hub piece I posted above, I learned that Emma’s family lived in Buffalo, Minnesota before moving to Arizona (father’s work transfer). Dad played hockey at Armstrong.

For those unfamiliar with Ms. Conner's background, she is from Gilbert, Arizona. She will be a senior at Edina after a strong junior year there last season. Prior to her time at Edina she spent three years at Selects Academy, a Shattuck style program in Rochester, New York.

Just looking at her stats, and specifically her goal/assist ratio, she sure seems to fit the profile of a "pure goal scorer". Needless to say this is something the Gophers (or any team for that matter) could use more of. I'm anxious to see her (and Jungles and Hemp) play in the State Tournament. Pretty safe bet that Edina and Andover each make it to the Big Dance!

Peyton Hemp with a big game against a good Grand Rapids team, netting the hat trick and an assist in a 6-1 Huskies victory, sending Andover to the State Tournament.

And Emma Conner gets the hat trick to win it for Edina over Benilde. Looks like the Hornets will meet Andover for the State Championship. Not a given, but it sure looks that way.

Not a huge number of Gopher recruits in the state tournament coming up. Only Peyton Hemp at Andover and Emma Conner and Vivian Jungels on Edina.

Thought I’d have some fun and throw out “five players most likely to be Gophers down the road”. I limited the choices to sophomores or younger as the next two classes are pretty full. Under the new rules this year’s sophomores can make commitments starting August first. My opinions are always shaky at best, but especially this year with COVID keeping me out of the rinks for a year now. A few girls I was tempted on including on reputation, but just haven’t seen them enough to get a good read. In case I haven’t implied it, these are girls playing in the tournament. Listed alphabetically.
  • Ella Boerger (Andover) sophomore forward
  • Kendra Distad (Minnetonka) freshman forward
  • Hannah Halverson (Edina) freshman forward
  • Grace Sadura (Minnetonka) sophomore forward
  • Josie St. Martin (Stillwater) freshman forward

A little further down the road might be Makayla Moran, an 8th grader at Apple Valley. Scored 29 goals and added 17 assists in 21 games. Of course a lot can change between 8th and 12th grades, but she would appear to be one to keep an eye on.

Somewhat related to recruiting as there is a good sized group coming in next year (especially forwards)...

Rumor on USHCO has it that a couple of underclassmen are potentially transferring from the Gophers. Anyone with some inside information on that?

No knowledge of anything but I wouldn’t be surprised if Shearen was one.

With the returning "super seniors" and some talented incoming freshmen, coupled with only so-much scholarship money to go around, this is not at all surprising.

Stillwater didn't have much puck luck against Eastview and Eastview made that lucky first goal stand. St Martin is as you described. It will be interesting to see the Stillwater team the next couple of years as they have some young talent.

USA Hockey nationals

Post by Iceburg » Wed Apr 28 9:34 am

“USA Hockey” youth nationals start tomorrow (Thursday). Girls tier 1 will be held in West Chester, Pennsylvania. You can follow the tournaments HERE. Current Gopher recruits involved are Ella Huber (Chicago Mission) in the 19u division, and Rilee Winters (Chisago Lakes), Madison Kaiser (Holy Family) and Allie Franco (Hill-Murray) all playing for the Minnesota Elite Vegas team in the 16u division.

A couple of other players in the 19u division that might be worth a follow are Joy Dunne (St. Louis Blues) who is the younger sister of Gopher freshman Josey Dunne. It seems likely that the staff is pursuing her. Two others that I’m not as sure of the interest level are Kelly Gorbatenko and Callista Chong on the Chicago Mission team. They are the two sophomores on the Mission team. Dunne is also a sophomore and these girls would be eligible to commit in August under the new rules.

There are three Minnesota teams from the “Minnesota Hockey” run fall tier one league in the 14u division. The Lakers is made up of girls from youth district 6, the Green Giants from district 10 and the Walleyes from district 3.

No, that’s it. That class is the group that supposedly can’t commit until August first. I was going to throw out a few possible names as the time got closer.

Local players picked for national development camps. Note that some are going to the Select 18 camp. That camp will likely showcase the players that will be chosen for the U.S. team for the World U18 championships.

2004 birth years
2005 birth years

2006 birth years will be chosen after the Minnesota 15s camp which starts on Saturday and runs through next Thursday in St. Cloud.

Burton is off to Yale per her Instagram bio.

And while we're going off those, Winters is the only one of the '22 recruits without something along the lines of "Minnesota hockey commit" listed.

I had posted back in January that I was getting the vibe that the staff had interest in a European player. The player I’m still thinking we might see on campus is from Finland and I was guessing she might be here this fall. Whether we are talking about the same player or not I guess time will tell. Thanks for posting here.

“USA Hockey” national development camps kick off later this week. The girl’s stuff is all in St. Cloud. You can get more information HERE. The Select 18 camp is the one to watch for selections to Team USA for the World U18 tournament. Still waiting for “Minnesota Hockey” (and “USA Hockey”) to release the names of selectees from the state 15s camp.
“USA Hockey” wrote:The final roster for the Girls U18 Select camp will have 28 defense, 40 forwards, and 8 goalies. Players from Minnesota's 2006 birth year may be added after conclusion of MN 15 Camp on June 16. On final day of the 16/17 Camp, players from 16/17 Camp will be selected for remaining forward, defense, and goalie spots.

“Minnesota Hockey” releases the names of the girls moving on to the National 15 Development Camp (2006 birth years) (LINK), Stillwater’s Josie St. Martin is the lone Minnesota 2006 that will move to the Select 18 camp.

Three other 2006s at the 18 camp: Defenseman Keira Ley (Sudbury, Massachusetts) from the Groton School and two forwards from Shattuck’s U16 team, Maggie Scannell (Wynantskill, New York) and Jordyn Petrie (Lincoln, Nebraska).

I read speculation elsewhere that at least one recruit will be transferring to Tonka?
Currently under construction.

I’ve read this also. My guess (and it is just a guess) is that it may be Ava Lindsay. Haven’t heard that the Breck coaching situation has been resolved, and Ava played her youth hockey in the Minnetonka system.

Reckless speculation as it was thrown out there on USCHO that Brad Frost apparently will be looking for two assistant coaches now so...could Brausen be a candidate for the Breck job? She was an assistant there previously so I guess time will tell.

And if I'm reading the same thing about transfers it said a couple of future Gopher transferring to Tonka so potentially who else beside Lindsay?

I seem to be getting lazy in my old age. A little research finds that Breck has hired a new coach.

Still you were able to find the article and at least in your old age you don't seem to be technology challenged...

I will preface my reckless speculation with the admission that I’m not real comfortable with my knowledge of the high school transfer rules.

I have a hard time believing that any of this coming year’s high school seniors will be transferring, which would leave Elly Klepinger as the lone committed recruit that it could be. The problem with this theory is that Elly is an Andover girl and would have to sit out this coming year without a change of address.

:update: found on a recruiting site that Elly Klepinger now lists Corcoran as home. A change of address would nullify the sitting out, I believe.

Found this post on the Holy Family site, but I can’t find any evidence that Maddie Kaiser has been invited to the 18s camp. The invitees (to my knowledge) are in the post above.

Kaiser received a waiver due to injury and was evaluated by USA at the OS hockey prospect tournament. Similar circumstances for Enright but was placed at 16/17 camp due to not being cleared to play until the week of the camp.

The girl’s Select 18 camp kicks off today in St. Cloud. Planning on spending some time up there this weekend. This camp is a big step in picking the U.S. team that will compete in the 2022 IIHF Women’s World Championships. I listed the players taking part a few posts up. Not sure if there will be a three game series with Canada as in previous years. USA Hockey only says ”The camp will help in determining the players selected for the Under-18 National Festival in Blaine, MN, in August”. Canada is running a similar camp with this ROSTER. Here’s the information I found on the world tournament….
The IIHF wrote:The 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship will be played in Sweden at the previously foreseen venues of Linkoping and Mjolby. With the launch of the new women’s and girls’ ice hockey initiative 2021-2030, the Swedish Ice Hockey Association is looking forward to hosting the best female junior players from 8 to 15 January 2022 in the Ostergotland province 200 kilometres southwest of Stockholm

August first is sneaking up on us and that is supposedly the first day that offers can be extended and commitments can be made for the class of ‘23 (high school juniors this coming season). Some commitments have leaked out over the last few weeks so a lot of this has likely been finalized but not announced. I promised a while back to throw out some names so I’ll start today with a couple of possible goal tenders.

Farah Walker is a highly touted goalie from the Calgary area. The staff seems to have had some interest, but so have many other programs. Ms. Walker plays at the Edge School. The most likely local goalie (assuming the staff signs a goalie for 2023) is Holy Family’s Sedona Blair. Sedona is an Eden Prairie girl and has been highly regarded for several years. She is a taller goalie at 5’10”. She is one of the 32 national players (4 goalies) invited to the upcoming National Festival.

Just a reminder that two players have already committed under the old rules. Forward Ava Lindsay and defenseman Elly Klepinger, both played at Breck last year. Ava is the sister of Gopher freshman Sadie Lindsay and seemingly is likely to play this year at Minnetonka.

I’ll try to fumble my way through defensemen (or defensewomen if you prefer) today. I’m not aware of any standout Canadian defensemen for the class of ‘23 that the staff may be looking at so I’ll stick to Americans for now. Remembering that Breck’s Elly Klepinger is already committed, one more defenseman might be all we can expect. If that is indeed the case Andover’s Josie Hemp would seem to be the most likely candidate. She is the only uncommitted ‘23 advancing out of last weeks Select 18 camp to the upcoming National Festival. She is the younger sister of Gopher freshman Peyton Hemp. If it isn’t Hemp, I would guess the next most likely would be Hill-Murray’s Ellah Hause. Ellah was at the Select 18 camp but didn’t advance to the Festival. Other Select 18s but not Festival players with a local tie include Kennedi Beilenberg-Howarth (Rochester girl who plays at Shattuck), Hailey Eikos (Osseo), Laine DeVries (Chisago Lakes), Maria Pape (Shattuck, from the Cleveland area) and Gabby Kim (Shattuck, from Los Angeles). If you stretch the local criteria there is Quinn Dunkle an Iowa girl from the Cedar Rapids area. A taller girl (5’10”), I’ve always thought she had a solid overall game when I’ve seen her. She plays at Selects Academy, a Shattuck style program in Rochester, New York.

I’ll throw out one more name of a girl that didn’t make the Select 18 camp, but I’ve always liked her game. Olivia Paidosh from Holy Family.

:update:
  • Ellah Hause and Laine DeVries to St. Thomas
  • Quinn Dunkle to UMD
  • Hailey Eikos to Vermont

Re: Women's team recruiting

Today I’ll take a look at possible forwards for the ‘23 class. One forward in the fold already with Ava Lindsay committing early before the current rules took effect.

First we’ll see how USA Hockey looks at the players out there. Uncommitted ‘23 forwards advancing to the National Festival are Joy Dunne (St. Louis Jr. Blues AAA), Kelly Gorbatenko (Chicago Mission) and McKenzie Siroky (Honeybaked).

Joy is the sister of of Gopher sophomore Josey Dunne. It seems like the staff is pursuing Joy pretty heavily. She is a big strong player that is strong on the puck and on her skates. Not totally polished yet, but big, big upside. Joy played on the Blues U19 team last year and is on the boy’s U16 team for the coming season.

I’ve not seen or heard anything about the staff being after the Gorbatenko girl, but I hope they are. Big, strong, skilledj girl who I thought was the top forward at the Select 18 camp. The Gophers have had a lot of luck with the Mission program in the past.

Uncommitted ‘23 forwards that were at the Select 18 camp but are not moving on to the National Festival are Delaney Fleming (Shattuck, from Rochester), Audrey Knapp (North American Hockey Academy, from Stevens Point, Wisconsin), Kaia Malachino (Little Caesars) and Margo Norehad (Chicago Mission).

There seems to be (or was at some point) interest in two sisters named Leighanna and Laralee Rizarri from the Calgary area. Leighanna Is a ‘23 forward and Laralee is a year younger. They were in Blaine for a tournament back about six weeks ago. Both girls are very short (I would guess about 5’0” for Leighanna and maybe an inch or two taller for Laralee). Both are quick and skilled and are a lot of fun to watch. How effective at the D-1 level? Hard to say.

There are a lot of instate ‘23 forwards that will play D-1 hockey somewhere, If the staff takes one of those, I’m guessing it will be Minnetonka’s Grace Sadura.

:update:
  • McKenzie Siroky and Grace Sadura to UMD
  • Kaia Malachino to Colgate
  • Margo Norehad to Brown

2021 USA Hockey Women’s National Festival Set For Aug. 5-13 In Blaine, Minnesota

Typically, the U.S. and Canada faceoff in a three-game series with teams at the U18 and U22 levels following the Festival, but because of COVID restrictions, that will not be the case this year.

“We’re still not quite back to normal yet,” said Million, “and we’ve made some adjustments, including not having as many U23 players part of this camp as we typically do. And while we won’t have the U18 and U22 Series against Canada, we’re excited for our players to compete against each other in a game setting.”
The U.S. Women’s National Team Festival is closed to the public through Aug. 10, however, once the national team departs for the IIHF Women’s World Championship, the scrimmages set for Aug. 11-13 will be open to the public.

All contests will be staged on Rink 5 at the Super Rink, with a U18 intrasquad scrimmage set for 2 p.m. CT on Aug. 11, along with scrimmages between the U23 and U18 teams on Aug. 12 at 12 noon and Aug. 13 at 10 a.m.

Million noted that the Festival plays a significant role in evaluation of players that are candidates for the U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team that will participate in the 2022 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship , Jan. 8-15, in Sweden.

Well, we are a month into the time that commitments from the class of ‘23 are allowed and the flood of announcements has instead been a trickle. If you scroll up to the posts above where I speculated on possible Gopher targets I have listed a couple of girls mentioned there that have committed to other schools. I’ll keep doing that as I find them.

The North American Hockey Academy’s annual Labor Day tournament kicks off today in Vermont. It’s the first of the big fall scouting events. You can follow the tournament HERE. From a Gopher perspective the Minnesota Jr. Whitecaps Black team is probably the team to watch most closely. Minnetonka’s Lindzi Avar and Kendra Distad and Stillwater’s Josie St. Martin are strong possibilities for the class of ‘24 along with several others on the team. There are a couple of ‘25s on that team also including Apple Valley’s Makayla Moran.

The girl’s Elite League starts next Tuesday. Currant Gopher commits on rosters are….
  • MSP Grey: Ava Lindsay and Elly Klepinger
  • Tradition Black: Allie Franco, Madison Kaiser and Vivian Jungels
  • Tradition White: Claire Enright

Early pre-season poll put together by ESPN Sportscaster and College Hockey media personality John Buccigross. I have to believe he has the Gophers ranked too low. But without the services of Grace Zumwinkle and Abbey Murphy this season, who knows how good they can be?

I suspect it’s too low as well. I hope so.

But I am glad they are there. 1-7-1 is a bed they made. By Missing the tourney and being ranked 7 they get to lie in that bed for a while.

Kind of wondered why there were no Gopher commits at the NAHA tournament. Looks like the bulk of them are in PITTSBURGH instead. Not the complete stats like the NAHA event, but a lot of top talent.

Enright has had injury problems in the past but I think she was healthly this past year.

The 2022 class in down to four and if Winters is out of the mix then it's down to three recruits.

Probable Gopher target Joy Dunne and her St. Louis Jr. Blues boys 16u teammates are in town this weekend for three games. Tomorrow (Friday) they play the Milwaukee Jr. Admirals at 12:30 at Eden Prairie. Saturday it’s the Colorado Rampage at 2:45 also at Eden Prairie, and Sunday against the Nashville Jr. Predators at 9:45 a.m. at St. Louis Park.
