Maggie Nicholson with a great feed on a 2-0 breakaway to Zanon, I believe, for the Gold Medal in OT!

USA wins it in the 3 on 3 overtime! Maggie Nicholson with a beautiful pass for the winning goal on a 2-0 break, unfortunately as a result of a Cherkowski turnover at her offensive blue line. Skylar Vetter was SOLID all game for the U.S. in goal.

U.S. wins in o.t. 2-1. Maggie Nicholson steals the puck, makes a length of the rink rush and feeds Kiara Zanon (Penn State recruit) a goal mouth pass for a tap in.

EDIT: I'm too damn slow

Cherkowski prob feels awful. It was a terrible turnover on the one hand, on the other I don’t see how these kids can have any idea what to do playing three on three, with a gold medal on the line, no less

Maybe if they played a little more three on three outside with a tennie ball

Looking at the highlights:
https://teamusa.usahockey.com/news_article/show/1074871

... I can't tell how Cherkowski got into the predicament, but she was kind of trapped between the two USA players and the offensive blue line, with seemingly no other option than to skate it back towards her own net, which seems counter intuitive. Anyway, well played by Nicholson.

Happened to see this when watching the 10:00PM sports last night on Channel 5.. Nicholson really shows the strength of her skating stride when the video is shown in slow motion. She also shows her maturity beyond her years in the interview following the replays.

Hadn't made it out to a Farmington game yet and had been a little alarmed by Claire Enright's lack of production this year as I think she is a big time talent.
Found this in yesterday's issue of the local paper for the southern 'burbs.
SUN Thisweek writer Mike Shaughnessy wrote:The Tigers now might have to find a way without one of their other top players, sophomore Claire Enright, who has a torn labrum in her hip. The hip eventually will require surgery, although Enright is trying to play through the injury this season, Holmes said. But it was too painful to allow her to skate in the third period or overtime Tuesday.

Enright’s injury is another in the series of challenges for Farmington, and it took until late in the third period before the Tigers adjusted to her not being on the ice, Holmes said. But, they found a way.

I was able to attend a Farmington game last month against Eagan and I was surprised she wasn't in the lineup and in talking with some of the Farmington parents, they mentioned that she was struggling with an injury. With the information that you dug up that makes it clear what she was dealing with.

Looks like she took as much as she could

Their top 2 scorers are both juniors and Jungels would be last on that list for F in total points. I don't watch enough to judge if the list is sound or not but that might be part of it.

That sums it up pretty well, their three best players are not seniors. You could make an argument for Davis or Jungels but the younger Jungels is much better.

By the third you might be referring to the goalie? Very good stats and also a junior I think.

Cornelia, the goalie, is a freshman. The younger Jungels girl, Vivian, is a sophomore. Hannah Chorske is the junior to watch. She has raised her game considerably this year.

EDIT: Actually, Emma Conner is right there as a junior Hornet to watch.

Edina sophomore D Vivian Jungels scored 4 goals, including a pure hat trick in the first period, to lead the Hornets to a 6-1 victory over Benilde- St. Margaret's. With the win Edina advances to the 6AA section final against the third seeded Wayzata Trojans, which pulled a mild 4-2 upset over second seeded Blake.

Left me wondering: how hard did Frosty & Company go after Mobley and Langseth, in particular? No one from the 1st team being a Gopher left me wondering, was this a sub-par recruiting year? We did, however, land 3 of 6 from the 2nd Team and two from the 3rd Team...and I fully realize that all of the selections by the newspaper are subjective and do not necessarily take a player's ultimate potential or other "qualities of the individual" into consideration. And from the player's perspective, there are always some who will choose to go someplace far away from home, maybe Ivy League if given the opportunity.

It will remain to be seen if Guilday or Nicholson make for the better collegiate player (similar points, both played on the U18 national team). Same for Nelson and Hemp from Andover with Hemp having nearly as many points as only a junior that missed some games due to plying for the U18.

Also side from Nelson all others from the first team committed to high academic schools out east. UM might not have been able to compete in that regard. Plus I will be curious to see how Mobley does in college as Breck played one of the softest schedules around. Good luck to her obviously either way.

Don't forget Skylar Vetter who couldn't make the girls All Metro team as she's the starter for LN Boys and was I believe the starter for the U18 team?

I obviously didn't look at the stats closely enough. I only saw the SV% and GAA and not total minutes played. But I suspect she's a legit prospect either way.

She's not the starter for LN boys. She played in three games all year.
I obviously didn't look at the stats closely enough. I only saw the SV% and GAA and not total minutes played. But I suspect she's a legit prospect either way.
Very, and she has a decent chance to be their starter next year.

The 2020 Minnesota recruiting class, on paper, is terrific. You shouldn't be wondering about a sub-par recruiting year based on lists. Trust what you know and have seen.

Based on the limited amount that I have seen, all online, I agree that next year's incoming group appears to be solid. I was just totally surprised that, unlike past years, none of our 2020 recruits were selected to the Strib's first team, that's all. I'm sure their process is fair and unbiased, and have little doubt that they do a much better job than I ever could:

How the team was chosen
The Star Tribune’s All-Metro teams and Metro Player of the Year were chosen based on nominations from metro-area coaches, conversations with a panel of coaches and staff observations.

There's also the fact that three in the class -Cherkowski, Dunne and Murphy - obviously couldn't be considered, so there's that!

Shout out to Blake for moving themselves to Class AA :dup:

Breck getting quite a reputation furthered by the cross check on the face-off 2 minutes into the game. Add that to their ongoing decision to stay in Class A.

Yes, the last couple years we've been pretty good on the depth chart, but we could use some star power.

Vivian Jungels is really something. Her, Mobley, the Tonka duo of Nicholson and Guilday, and the Andover duo of Hemp and Nelson were probably the most impressive players I saw yesterday.

So of your top six, the Gophers get three.

I wonder if that's a good ratio for our fan base or not good enough :conf2:

We are a demanding lot, so the answer to your question is, "not good enough!". Seriously, we have some real good ones coming in. But I'm still wondering why Mobley is headed to Quinnipiac? :confused2:

I think Cianfarano was there when she committed. My guess is that must have influenced her. But yes, it does seem a surprising choice.

Anne Cherkowski-coming this fall
SEASON..TEAM............................................. GP...G......A.....PTS..P/G
2019-20..Pursuit of Excellence Female Prep..18...22....15.....37....2.1
2018-19..Pursuit of Excellence Female Prep..28...25....30.....55....2.0
2017-18..Pursuit of Excellence Female Prep..20...28....23.....51....2.6
2016-17..Pursuit of Excellence Female Prep..19...10....12.....22....1.2

Next year we're scheduled to have only two goaltenders, sophomores Makayla Pahl and Olivia King. Pahl has played 46 minutes all year and King can redshirt if she wants having played not at all, but the coaches had high hopes for Pahl coming in and Ms King shone very brightly for Brainerd HS last year, so who knows? Skylar Vetter is slated to come in fall of 2021.

It's hard to find stats and much info on the Chicago Mission players but F Abbey Murphy and D Josey Dunne are coming this fall. Hopefully Murphy is a star. I don't have much of a feeling on Dunne but maybe she's as good as her sister Jincy...lol

As it stands next year if everyone is healthy with 13 forwards and 7 D one skater will need to healthy scratch every game.

Mission stats don't seem to exist except for a few tournaments. Josey Dunne is quite similar to Maggie Nicholson in both body type and playing style, although Nicholson is a bit ahead of Dunne at this point.

Hopefully Mission will be in Blaine the first weekend in April for the "USA Hockey" national tournament at the Super Rink. Mission won the Illinois state tournament two weekends ago beating Chicago Young Americans two straight in the final series. They will go against the St. Louis Jr. Blues and Team Wisconsin (a "before and after" team of Wisconsin high school players) this weekend in Fon du Lac, Wisconsin in the Central District championships.

The site is unsecure so I can't post a direct link.

Looks like I may have been right. Rumour is that Bemidji State goalie Lauren Bench has committed. She will be a red shirt senior next year with one season of eligibility. She played her high school hockey at Burnsville. She wants to go to medical school.

Article on the St. Louis Dunne family. Only passing mention of Gopher-to-be Josey, but times are slow for sports news. Remember ninth grader Joy, as I believe the Gopher staff has a lot of interest.

Nice to see a new source in the girls/women’s hockey game. List seems a little incomplete, and if I was doing it it would look somewhat different, but a good effort.

EDIT: Rumor floating around has Hannah Halverson (who would top my list) returning to Edina.

A poster on the high school board is saying that Claire Enright is transferring from Farmington to Lakeville South. That one seems a little odd to me, but we'll see what happens.

Nice to see some hockey back in town. Winny (Brodt) Brown putting on the first weekend of her "Prospects and Futures" program.

https://www.oshockey.com/page/show/5845 ... ab=content

It's always the biggest local girls hockey recruiting summer showcase. They are streaming games (no announcers) this year, probably because of the NCAA extending the "dead period".

I'm totally impressed that she was able to pull this together, given the pandemic situation we're all in. I see at least some of the games are being streamed? Any Gopher commits participating that we could watch?
