2021-2022 Schedule

Post by Jupiter » Thu Apr 22 1:02 pm

Here is the official schedule thread for next season... Post confirmed games here.

The only confirmed series is at North Dakota over the Thanksgiving Weekend. (11/26, 11/27) That series has been added to the 2021-22 schedule on GPL and on the subscribed calendar.

Duluth road trip back on the cards with Mankato out.

Alaska and Mercyhurst should be four easy wins...

Right. You only have 10 non conference games to work with, and they always try for at least 18 home games, so you're only talking about two or three non conf away trips per year. I'm going to Cloud for sure and probably Duluth.

Mercyhurst is unexpected. Aside from independents, I'm surprised to see anyone outside of the conference flying to the Twin Cities when travel budgets are likely to take a hit for awhile.

Alaska is going to Duluth and maybe others on that trip. Sure most of their non conference will be away games for years to come since no one wants to spend the money to get up there.

Fairbanks wasn't a surprise since, without Anchorage, there's nobody local to play and they're now an independent (or about to be), so they have to take whatever they can get.

I’m all about National titles Bonin, I think playing four games, most likely first two weekends will give us some confidence and help us gel before we play St Cloud and UMD, which will obviously be big games for national tournament seeding, if playing Alaska and Mercyhurst gets us more prepared to do that than playing Bemidji, then screw the Bemidji State Beavers.

Playing those scrubs does not get the Gophers more prepared than playing a tournament team last year that beat uw. They will play bad teams in the conference (MSU/OSU) for the confidence boost.

I wouldn't mind Kato for the PWR but schedules aren't set in a bubble. You don't get to pick your opponents 100% as you would prefer.

I don’t always like taking the “I’m just happy to be here” approach but after the past 14 months I really will be just happy to be there. To be at Mariucci watching my favorite team play live sounds about as good as it gets right now.

It's funny that all the people who were clamoring to play all the other Mn schools skipped the all Minnesota Mariucci classic 2 years ago. I'm sure that the "true fans" will rattle off a ton of excuses why they did not show up for those games.

How do you know that those clamoring (probably like 10-20 people vocal about it on the internet) didn't attend?

I'm saying there are like 50 total active people online talking about Gopher hockey these days. If you were to extend a survey to the total population that may attend a game or more each year (probably like 20K total in the Twin Cities), I'm sure they would rather see the MN teams than Mercyhurst and Alaska.

They won't show up for Mercyhurst and Alaska, either... I'm saying the survey results for the below question would be an overwhelming win for B.

"Would you be more likely to purchase single game tickets at Mariucci versus:
a. Mercyhurst/Alaska
b. Mankato/Bemidji"

The other problem is they would set the price of the Mankato game at 50 bucks a pop and the Mercyhurst game will be like 25. They try to bleed the small single game ticket fanbase dry on the interesting games and we've seen they don't sell out at the prices set.

There is more to it than who they schedule. I see empty seats against everyone except UND where their fans buy every available seat.

Bemidji and Mankato fans just aren't making the trip to Minneapolis to attend the game and Twin Cities fans have too many other options. Plus disposable income will be down this year.

I'm not in live with Alaska and Mercyhurst but understand. Perhaps some Midwest teams are doing Alaska a solid so they can get a season in. I feel like the U has always been willing to help college hockey in general.

Exactly. If that many fans really cared about playing the other MN programs more people would have showed.

I think enthusiasm for the program is building. The conference believe it or not is more competitive than when it started, the school has gotten more creative with trying to covet interest and making the NCAAs on a regular basis again should make a difference as well.

The factors that make the difference are ticket prices and the dates of the games. If those things were the same for all opponents, the most attended games would be the regional schools + UM and Notre Dame could probably beat out DU/Omaha in the next tier.

I will say this. I would be more excited to watch the Gophers play Umass/BC/BU (and maybe Cornell/Harvard) at Mariucci than basically any other team. But to mix it up with teams no one cares about doesn't do anything for me.

We played UMass in the Mariucci Classic like four years ago and there was maybe 5,000 people there. I don’t think tickets were expensive at all either.

We played UMass in the Mariucci Classic like four years ago and there was maybe 5,000 people there. I don’t think tickets were expensive at all either.
I'm talking about now. That was before they had the best player of the last 15+ years and became a powerhouse. And I'm not saying it would be much better now. I'm just saying personally, I could get excited for that.

Thinking back now, I believe that UMass game was a 7pm
puck drop on New Years Eve too.

Like I mentioned in the other post, day/time matters, too. But other things equal, UMass/BC/BU would probably get close to regional team attendance numbers.

Christ on a cracker.

Bonin, they aren't developing a schedule around your personal interests. We understand you want to play the same 5-6 non-conference teams every year.

Not all of us do. While in state teams are fun to keep in the mix, other people would like some variety. If we branch out from MN, it won't always be against BC, BU, Denver, especially if you want home games without reciprocation. Often even if you are willing to reciprocate and travel, the other top teams all want home games as well.

All of the best teams eventually play games against weak teams. It happens in all sports. Alabama football plays games against Mercer and Southern Mississippi this year. Coaches must believe it isn't a total waste of time to play lesser teams.

As Mr. Jimmy said, "You can't always get want you want."

Duh. The discussion is around what opponents each of us would like to see and how we'd rank them. And whether Mercyhurst/Alaska is more interesting than the usual Mankato.

It’s really not a discussion when it’s mainly just you voicing your opinion and perpetually complaining about how we never have YOUR perfect schedule.

I for one think this looks great. Some teams we haven’t seen in awhile and should beat up on - at home (who doesn’t love that??!!)

ZOMG THREE OLD WCHA RIVALS COMPLETE WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRAVEL TO SEE THOSE GAMES ON THE ROAD CUZ THEY’RE CLOSE!!

And the big ten which has turned out some pretty good rivalries.

I see ZERO issues with the schedule and am just thrilled with the chance we’ll get to see them in person and make some road trips this year.

I don’t want spring and summer to go too fast….but looking forward to the official countdown clock!

Remember back in the 80s Gophers had a agreement with hockey east teams they would play one year as home games the next season as road games? Those games were so fun to go to at the old Mariucci arena

I am surprised that CC is not coming to Mariucci this year to complete the agreement when MN visited them 2 seasons ago.

New CC coach might have axed the trip knowing they'd get pounded?

I would much rather play the BC, BU, and Harvard type teams over Alaska and Mercyhurst. With that said, they better win ALL the games against the cupcakes. We have seen what happens to your pairwise if you have an off night against these type teams.

Every once in awhile I get a hankering for Gophers hockey during the offseason and I just had one. Every off season even in years when expectations are down. Pound for pound it's my favorite sporting event and I look forward to the start of the season even though it will be the first one in 18 years that I'll be apart from my oldest. So I don't wish the days away but kinda sorta.

I'm not getting the schedule, my Google calendar. It shows "Minnesota Men's Hockey" as a calendar but the events don't show up. Any suggestions? I had them in years past.

lol…to accomplish that…they’ll have to sweep 2 teams that made the Frozen Four last season with both having most of their seniors back playing bonus year…

I’ll stipulate the 21-22 Gopher team is the most stacked on paper of any Gopher team in a VERY long time. I mean, anything short of reaching the Frozen Four will be a disappointment. SCSU & tDogs return experienced, top teams & the series with both are home & home, so games 3-6 along with 7-8 will be among the Gophers most challenging of the regular season. But hey, it’s great to dream of starting 6-0…it may a bit more dicey than last yr

It’d be great to go into Grand Forks undefeated but I’d personally take splits against SCSU and UMD if we could go in and sweep North Dakota. I want revenge for that thanksgiving series a year and a half ago. I’ll never forget sitting in Mariucci thanksgiving night surrounded by obnoxious North Dakota hicks jeering our team and our fans. It’d be great if we could somehow sweep all three but if the hockey gods are listening then the sweep in GF is paramount. Without getting too greedy I would like one of those wins to be a really lopsided score of like 10-3. Maybe I’m getting a little ahead of myself but a man can dream.

B10... sorry it's just not the priority for a league where they are going to absolutely try and maximize exposure/revenue for fb and mbb in 21-22. All the focus is there right now and hockey will be secondary. It makes it hard to plan any road trips... but that's where we are at right now.

Although I hope you're proven right, based on recent history, no victories should be assumed.

So... I assume that there will be no Mariucci Classic this season? All of the non-conference games scheduled this season have dates, and none of them are in December.

Correct -- no classic this year.
