Be ready for 20 mins of what we saw in the last 30 seconds of that period.

Question - seems like this team struggles against he defensive first teams like Notre Dame, MSU, and now MSU-M. Is it a personnel issue or does tBob not know how to coach through that?
The young guns are going against a team who is forcing them into a different style, just as SCSU did to BC. I think the Gophers' talent is a little short on grit tonight, and LaFontaine set a bad tone on that first goal. This is the kind of game that Reedy, Meyers, Nelson et. al. have to turn around. The skill guys are getting dominated.

I'm pulling for them, but the way MSU is keeping MN away from their net, I'd be lying if I said I was optimistic.

Pouring the puck in the net last night probably didn't help. I've seen it happen too many times. Dominate one night and lay a turd the next.
it is probably the mechanism of how we scored as well. lots of space, tic tac toe passes, etc because Omaha foolishly gave us space to use our speed. any player who thought that's how Kato would allow us to play is naïve and it makes me sad if tBob allowed players to feel like they were going to have any scrap of space tonight. you knew it was going to be a smothering style, but man i really hoped we were going to see our D play an outstanding game and they've just $h!t all over themselves tonight

And that thought process is why these teams continue to beat the U. Mankato out schemed the Gophers.....right.

MN needs to resign themselves to they have to dump the puck in and forecheck hard. This means getting it deep early and while forecheckers are moving forward. Too many dumps had 4 players lined up on the blue line so they could not win a race.
It looks like dumping it for the sake of dumping it. Not actually going to get the puck. Have to be hard on the forecheck.

20 minutes left to lay it all on the line. If they lose ok, bit don't go down without swinging the rest of the way.

Take it to them from the puck drop.
Currently under construction.

20 min left boys. put it all on the line and at the very least, put some f*** heart into it. season isn't lost yet, but someone has to light a fire in this team in the locker room right now. do or die. kato came back last night. und came back last night. absolutely no reason it can't happen

Looks Lucian to me. I give MSU some credit but a serious lack of intensity by the gophers.

Its not about trapping or scheme. Its about playing your hardest, competing every shift and not taking anything for granted. That´s the difference between the two teams.
While I agree we can step up the effort (a lot), sometimes it IS about scheme. Mankato is not a good matchup for us.
The Gophers have been slapped around by Mankato long enough to suggest this is true. Honestly, it's a bit embarrassing that the pilot school to the north and the junior college to the south has been eating the Gophers' lunch for years now. I said before this started that Motzko is under pressure. He has the talent this year, and this would be yet another troubling footnote to his post season resume.

Meh. The NCAA losses don’t make me mad like they used to in the 2000s. Ever since the B1G mistake I just don’t care that much anymore. If we come back, cool. If not, whatever. Would just be nice to see all these supposed draft picks put some effort in.

In other news, the Sandelin family cat was interviewed at intermission.

So sick of these announcers. Glad MSU has it all wrapped up. They will be surprised when Gophers pull this one out.
I am not getting that at all. The Gophers have shown little to warrant praise.

I still hope to have them pull it out because we can score in bunches but it is not looking good.

Keep trying to sneak through the blue line as there is a wall of purple. Poke it away or get pushed outside.

Why the hell aren’t we doing a full out 2 man on the puck forecheck? As soon as the mavs D get the puck we back off and go into a trap. Makes no sense.

No one rightfully predicted FF for this Goohers team before the season began and unlike so often at SCSU the Goohers won their first game in the tourney.

I'm not concerned how the Goohers did vs. MSUM under Lucia and this is a one game sample size. Like it or not this is still a fairly young squad, but Bob is bringing in plenty of guys that look like they'll be here for 3 or 4 years.

For whatever reason the Gophers have been sluggish this game. Some credit goes to Mankato the rest who knows? I've been watching sports long enough to know that the unforeseen happens.

If this program lays an egg next year then I might become concerned. Today it's too early.

The Gophers have looked a bit better this period - time to find the back of the net.

this is a pretty fair point to bring up. this team SHOULD be better next year pending who comes back. will still be missing a top tier goal scorer, but the depth should be there and the D should be outstanding. Goalie remains a ? but we shall see. But yes, to start the year we weren't picked to be in contention to win the B10 (MI vs WI, imo). so that's a reasonable point of reference

The Mavs are everywhere... wow. Still only two goal game though. Just sneak one in and then you never know. I like the way the Gophers have been playing since the halfway point of the 2nd. Just gotta find a way to get it past the Mav bodies / sticks, and then past McKay.

This feels like a late '90's/early '00's NHL game. Get a goal or two, and trap for the last 40 minutes. Regardless of who you're cheering for, it's boring hockey to watch. Barely any shots, let alone quality chances that will lead to goals being scored.

i would argue there have been zero good chances for either team in the entire game. very boring to watch, and Kato realized this was their way to win

I also don't think the Gophers are playing quite as badly as seems to be the general consensus. I'd call it their B-/C+ game. Mankato has been really disruptive and the Gophers haven't been able to counter it / work around it.

I also don't think the PP was ever as acceptable as Motzko seemed to indicate. It's been clear for a long time (to me, anyway) that they don't generate the types of chances that lead to goals consistently enough. It's been super apparent tonight, with a team that is playing solid team defense - with all the offensive skill the Gophers have, the PP seems just so static.

Did the Gophers have any true scoring chances?

I also don't think the Gophers are playing quite as badly as seems to be the general consensus. I'd call it their B-/C+ game. Mankato has been really disruptive and the Gophers haven't been able to counter it / work around it.
I agree that Mankato is really disruptive, but this may be the gophers worst effort of the year. All very timid and passive. Best player has been Perbix. D+ at best.

The better team won tonight
The better team “tonight” (will likely win). This was not the best from the Gophers and I would venture if this was a series tomorrow would be different.

But unfortunately you don’t get a second chance at this point in the season.

Mavericks are a big reason why. Out hustled, out hit, out defended. Not sure a 2nd game would be any different to be honest. Motzko doesn’t appear to be making any adjustments either.

Nice goal there. Jeez. Okay. Sometimes the other team just has a better game.
Like 10x better. Outplayed, out goal tended, out coached.

This reminds me of a Woog team. They were all super skilled, super fast and fancy as hell. But they never did too well in the tournament. I think the Mavs have like 8 seniors on the team and they're probably more mature anyway. Lots of 25 year old kids to play against.

There will be no Number ones left, and honestly nobody is going to even watch now. Duluth has a legit chance to win their third title... and I don't think they're even that great this year.

Good grief. This is the best Gopher team since 2013-2014. They’re finally back in the tournament, which is a big step. Keep improving.

No #1 seed is advancing.

The thing that kills me is they weren't even a tough out.

So SOFT.

Lot of folks posting out of nowhere now pouncing because they're having a bad game. It sucks to see them go out like this, but if the Gophers can get decent goalie play and improve their PP next season they will be very good next year.

And again Streaky unlike at SCSU they won their first game.
Currently under construction.

That is EXACTLY the team I was thinking of with Klatt and Olimb. They took on Jeff Jackson's Canadian mercenaries and they mopped up the ice with the Gophers.

If Wisconsin-Madison is the state's most prestigious university and the state itself is known as The Dairy State, does that mean UW is Bovine University?

Blue Blood = best basketball teams
Helmet school = best football teams
What the hell are we? I expect us to be the Blue Blood or Helmet School of NCAA hockey, but we just aren't and haven't been for many years. Sigh.....

He's wearing fancier clothes now, though.
