Re: The unspeakable evil from the east pollutes our fair state
It took a couple of seasons longer than I expected, but Granato seems to have lifted Wisco out of the basement and into position to be a real threat to the regular season title.
Just like earlier this month, February starts with 2 against Wisco followed immediately by 2 against ND. We got kicked in the nuts the last time, but these games are sweepable, so let's make sure we bring our A game.

Re: The unspeakable evil from the east pollutes our fair state
Things I'd like to see this weekend:
1. The same kind of tenacity and pressure we saw this past weekend, especially night 1.
2. Let's shut down Cole Caulfield and shut up that Badger fan base.
3. Ryan Johnson score his first collegiate goal.
4. Meyers get a goal or two.
5. Bryce get another crack at Wisconsin. He usually plays well against them.
6. Nothing dangerous or will get any of our guys suspended but maybe a little line brawl would be fun to see.
7. A sweep.
Even more excited for this series than I was for the one on Madison a few weeks ago. Go Gophers!

Weird to think this weekend is the only one this season that's Friday-Saturday and 7PM both nights.

It hasn’t bothered me, but not having to physically go to games may have something to do with it.

Not saying that it's been bothersome since I've been watching from home too; just think it's weird.

Re: #2 Gophers vs #11 BADgers (Feb 5 & 6)
I think one of the keys this weekend will be keeping the BADgers off the PP. They are deadly and are 3rd in the NCAA with a 28.57%. The Gophers also need to improve on their zone exit and zone entrance from the last series. Need more than 20 shots on goal per game, as I think their goalies are not their strong point. The Gophers can create some more separation with a good weekend.

Re: #2 Gophers vs #11 BADgers (Feb 5 & 6)
Depends on how close they are, and which one is ahead. Ideally, the TV is ahead of the radio by a few seconds, and I just use the DVR functionality on my cable box to pause for a few seconds. Takes a bit to get synced up, and frequently it's about half a second off, but I can live with that. One game a couple months ago I had it absolutely perfect, getting a clang of the crossbar exactly synced on the screen.
I can only do that on one TV in my house though. If I'm in my office, I use RokuTV app to stream, and that's usually 30-45 seconds behind the radio. So, I don't really watch the game directly, I listen on the radio, and use the TV as my own personal instant-replay.

Gotten to that point in the day (actually it was more like 5 hours ago) where I am completely distracted from work due to the excitement of this series. It's unfortunate we can't go because the atmosphere would be bonkers but still, I don't think I've been this excited going into a series since against Michigan last year. The season opener against PSU and the series in Ann Arbor were very close. But this is next level

First, I listen to the U audio stream online. It can be in the range of a minute behind the game, but that hasn't bothered me. I start out with the radio feed turned down and watch the start of the game. At the first whistle, I hit pause on the DVR. Then I turn the radio volume up and when I hear the whistle, I un-pause the DVR and there I am!

Re: #2 Gophers vs #11 BADgers (Feb 5 & 6)
That's essentially how I do things. The main thing is that the X1 DVR has a bit of a lag in spooling up again, so, need to work from that. I usually go off a puck deflected out of play or icing or something. I've gotten pretty good at timing that out right.Composer wrote: ↑Fri Feb 05 3:22 pmFirst, I listen to the U audio stream online. Hint to Gophers defense--- Caufield loves to leave the zone early. Keep your head on a swivel. Other that that play, it was a fast paced 1st. BADgers blocked a lot of shots. Keep pumping shots to the net.

I hit the rewind to see how Baker got hurt in the corner. It looks like he goes for a hit in the corner and LaCombe side stepped him as Baker went head first into the boards. It was just a flash so couldn’t really see the end result.

What can you do when they miss a slap shot badly and it hits their own player in the head and redirects into the goal?
Re: #2 Gophers vs #11 BADgers (Feb 5 & 6)
Probably an unpopular opinion, but I have a feeling this year's team is a bottom of the top tier teams. They really play well against the bottom and mid-level teams in the B10 but when faced with teams like Wisco, ND and likely Michigan at the end of the year, we will see that they may not be as good as their record or ranking indicates. It just might be that in a normal year, they would be ranked somewhere in the 7-10 range.
I hope I am wrong, but playing teams with higher level talent over the past 10 games they have really struggled.

Game over, Wisco wins 4-1.

If Wisconsin-Madison is the state's most prestigious university and the state itself is known as The Dairy State, does that mean UW is Bovine University?

Re: #2 Gophers vs #11 BADgers (Feb 5 & 6)
I've been saying all season this team will be hard to judge since they don't play outside the league. The only measure is against hot teams like WI, and tonight they failed that test.JoeGopher wrote: ↑Fri Feb 05 8:55 pmProbably an unpopular opinion, but I have a feeling this year's team is a bottom of the top tier teams.
Wisconsin has a couple stars at forward, and they made the difference. The Gophers don't have a player like Caufield. LaFontaine was pedestrian tonight when he needed to be great. The team either didn't shoot or didn't get shots through, and Meyers has been on a slide for a number of games now. If he can't find his prior form, they lose an important 1-2 line up punch.
They definitely did not test the WI goalie tonight. He didn't have to be good. I can't believe how many unforced errors this team made tonight...passes too soft or too hard, leading players by too much or not enough, failure to keep the puck down low...and mental mistakes just piled up...when Reedy didn't shoot from 5 feet in front of the net I thought "ok, it's going to be that kind of night."
Huge game tonight and a big disappointment for Minnesota. If they don't win tomorrow, they might be known as the team who started 10-0 and didn't win the league championship.

If Ranta hits the wide open net we wouldn’t have so many gloom and doom fans right now. That was a close game until the last few minutes and the Gophers had their chances.
Wisconsin is a very good team and we can’t expect to sweep them. Today they got the bounces, let’s hope the Gophers get them tomorrow.

It was a close game. Who knows if Ranta's goal changes things, but it wouldn't hurt.Bertogliat wrote: ↑Fri Feb 05 10:09 pmIf Ranta hits the wide open net we wouldn’t have so many gloom and doom fans right now. That was a close game until the last few minutes and the Gophers had their chances.

I would say that Minnesota didn't have many high quality chances tonight. That has to change tomorrow.

People get so high on this team when we win and then we lose a game and suddenly we are mediocre.
Let’s see how tomorrow shakes out and how we respond before throwing in the towel on the season, eh?

A Ranta goal there probably allows the team to exhale and think... 'Whew, okay we survived and got that out of us.'Bertogliat wrote: ↑Fri Feb 05 10:09 pmIf Ranta hits the wide open net we wouldn’t have so many gloom and doom fans right now. Even a couple other goals doesn't change that a lot of tonight's hockey game repeated what they did during the first game against Wisconsin earlier this year and a little bit of what they did against Notre Dame. Shooters were indecisive when they had the puck which led to blocked shots and no rebound opportunities--course didn't help that forwards were swinging by the net too.
Players with the puck sometimes have to make the decision that they are going for a pass off pads opportunity, don't let it get blocked, don't miss the net and don't let the goalie freeze the puck. You just didn't see that kind of offensive discipline tonight.
It was going to be a hard game and then to make those critical mistakes in three situations when Caufield and Holloway are the ice are tough to stomach. It reminded me of the games vs Penn State and North Dakota in November 2019--some different players on the ice that have enough talent and experience to know better. It's hard to know if they were in the same kind of positioning in some earlier games this season, but can't make those mistakes against first round talents like that and get away with it.

I really love that we can make this available to all of you. There are nights when I am tired and do not feel like putting this together. But the fact that the U makes the raw video available to the media is great. It allows me to quickly edit it and post it for all of you. A bit different than the live video via Twitter we used to do. But I still love it. And because of the U making this available to us, I can make it available to all of you.
It sucks that GPL is not considered "essential media" to be able to be AT Mariucci Arena this season. But I am so glad that we can bring this kind of content to you.

Re: #2 Gophers vs #11 BADgers (Feb 5 & 6)
Random thoughts on tonight's game:
- Our play on that 5 on 3 in the 1st needed to be better.
- That's the worst I've ever seen Faber get walked on that Holloway goal.
- Not that it really mattered but Staudacher should've been able to keep that 4th goal out of the net. I just really don't like seeing Ahcan on the scoresheet.
- Another unimpressive game from Brodzinski in a string of poor games from him. He really needs to improve his foot speed to take that next step.
- Caufield is obviously a great scorer but I still don't see a ton outside of his finishing/stickhandling skills that impresses me.
But yeah, not worth getting too down on the team after that game. We're still the better overall team and I think we'll come out stronger tomorrow and win.

Going into the season I was hoping for an NCAA tournament birth is all. Get in there and anything can happen. It's a team that can beat anyone in the country on the right night. Tonight...thought UW was better and that sucks but it's OK. Hopefully the response is there.JoeGopher wrote: ↑Fri Feb 05 8:55 pmProbably an unpopular opinion, but I have a feeling this year's team is a bottom of the top tier teams. Both teams can do some damage in the NCAAs in my opinion Hate to give UW any credit but they're a dang good hockey team.
