#4 Gophers vs Arizona St-- Round 2 -- Jan 21 & 22

Post by frozen4champs » Mon Jan 18 1:40 pm

Thursday 7pm FSN
Friday 4pm FSN

Time to get back on track. Hopefully Reedy and Staudacher return. I would guess Moe gets a start.

The only thing I heard was from the Badger tv guys is that 1 guy had it and the others were close contact. The guys that missed some time were Ryan O'Reilly, Jarrod Gourley and Jacob Wilson. The last two guys are their best d men and Wilson is their #1 cheap shot artist. Not sure of any of their availability yet.

Barring any reschedules, this will be the last series on a nontraditional day.

Since after these games ASU will be off for a couple of weekends, I'm assuming that they're going home Friday night/Saturday morning? Ideally the frigid weather should be earlier in the week, but it looks like the Minnesota Weather Gods are going to give them a parting gift on their way out of town.

I had read this in regards to the postponed Friday game:

“The Sun Devils said the move was made “for precautionary reasons in accordance with COVID-19 safety guidelines” after “recent COVID-19 developments” in the team.

According to sources, Arizona State had one positive test and underwent PCR testing on the rest of the team. Those results wouldn’t have been available in time for Friday night’s game, and the decision to postpone was made Friday morning.”

Assuming the rest of the tests were okay and thus why they played Saturday-Sunday. Sure hoping nothing further develops that affects our team or future games.

Dhooghe came back and played after the hit to the head, but will miss Gophers games.

From this weeks coaches show--
Big praise for Nelson-- called him the Gophers swiss army knife
He expects both Reedy and Staudacher back, but it is up to the medical staff. Seemed more optimistic about Reedy.
Said 9 & 27 need to pick up the pace on offense

"Surprised he only got 1 game."
Leaves me wondering what it would take to get more than one game. That was the kind of hit that could leave lasting repercussions on poor Mr. Dhooghe.

For a league that calls any hard hit a penalty, this is tantamount to looking the other way.

That could have been a devastating blow, and a harsher lesson is easily justifiable.

Plus Dhooghe's brother is a senior on the Wisconsin team. Awkward locker room

I wonder how being on the receiving end of a suspension-worthy dirty hit will affect the way ASU will play this weekend. Even though Wilson might still be out, Jansons' hit and Greg Powers' subsequent interpretation of Dr. Banner when he was ejected a few weeks ago didn't exactly help assuage my doubts about their program, but seeing what happened to Dhooghe could make them second guess themselves before throwing potentially dangerous hits.

Wondering how many and exactly who AZ State will be missing this evening. Last I saw there were 5 or 6 who would likely miss it
(Dhooghe plus Covid). Any other key guys?
(And I know, we SHOULD win regardless)

Their stud freshman and the leading scorer in the country Kopperrud is out. That plus two of their top 4 defensemen.

Is the game not at 7 pm? Thats 9 am for me when I'm sleeping during the week. 4 pm I would actually forego going to bed right away as its only a 6 am start time for me.

Walker’s goal was sick. Awesome job holding the zone and pick movement on those multiple shifts.

Yeah this has been a dominant performance thus far, really fun to watch and the puck movement has been impeccable. Also liking the pressure and effort when we don’t have the puck.

I think Az St pressured the puck more on the penalty kill than 5x5. That was some very passive play in their own zone.

If Wisconsin-Madison is the state's most prestigious university and the state itself is known as The Dairy State, does that mean UW is Bovine University?

30 SOG less than 4 minutes into the 2nd. ASU still hasn't gotten their 3rd shot on goal.

How short of personnel was this Arizona St. team? They missing a bunch of guys? Seemed like the JV team of the squad we played a few weeks ago.

Motzko post game:

we played w edge.

ASU wounded and sick

first half 4 lines rolling.

second half world juniors, injuries, too much idle time and lack of edge.

need more practice.

lost 2 games giving up 2 goals. Gopher hockey wins most of those games.

expect some push back from ASU tomorrow

I think one of the best players tonight was Jaxson Nelson and he did not get a point. Brodzinski had a couple of missed open nets.
