Recap from the final coaches show--
tBob is pissed about having to play the night game and having the game pushed back an hour.
Mn and UND got hosed. Wants rule changed to insure #1 seed plays early
Said the no fans hurt the home teams
Have not talked to the Sr's about staying yet.
Talked a bit of the transfer portal. Thinks it is a great thing for the student athletes.
He thinks they could lose player(s) in the portal. Too early to tell. * note-- he seemed to pause before he answered it, so he may know the answer
Talked about recruiting a bit. hopes they will allow them to go see player camps in June
Unsung hero's -- Munson, Meyers, Laffer, the entire defense unit

Did not discuss any possible early departures
Not saying it affected outcome of this year....just odd to me that there is not an off day for Regional like in basketball. I know it's always been that way...

I bet all the seniors not going pro will end up there. Guessing Bob said we are moving on and if they want a 5th year it will be somewhere else.

Maybe.... but remember.

St. Thomas will be ineligible for the NCAA Tournament for 5 years. So bringing in Portal kid doesn't make sense at all.

Agreed. He discussed that some schools were not giving additional scholarship money for the 5th year guys and that if those players wanted to stay that they would have to pay their own way. He thought WI was one of the schools doing that. It appears MN may be going that way as well. Feel bad for our SR's, but completely understand that Bob wants to insure the recruits get to come in as scheduled and not risk losing any of those. It will be tough seeing McManus in another jersey and I'm sure tBob has mixed emotions losing these guys. Maybe, this is an indication that Walker and McLaughlin will stay since he is letting McManus go. But, who knows, just spitballing.

This really sucked for all the seniors, no matter where they played. Hope that everyone that wants to play another year in an atmosphere befitting college hockey gets a chance to do so.

See us in Boston 2022 championships 😎👌👍
First of three straight championships ending in St. Paul in 2024. Wouldn't that be a dream come true
Why not, Duluth started their run in St. Paul in 2018 which very well may include a 3rd in Pitt.

You have to wonder if Moe is entering because Laffer is potentially staying. Boy that would be fun. Can’t wait to be at Mariucci next year. Place should be rocking.

If LaFontaine isn't coming back... Moe leaving is gonna cause a $h!t storm at the U. One goalie on the roster with zero recruits signed?

So I am assuming that Laffer is coming back.

Or we have a tight line on the ND goalie?
I'm confident there's a plan. And, since Laffer hasn't signed yet to get his rookie deal going, I'm assuming he may be coming back.

If Laffer is back, this team looks incredibly solid back to front for a run next year. Moe entering the portal I'm taking is a sign that direction. Maybe wishful thinking, but I'll take it.

As far as McManus and Munson, personally sad to see them both go, but am also ok with moving on. McManus I was always waiting to take the next step and he never got there. Munson has plenty of grit, but guys his size are a dime a dozen. I will remember him fondly for his glorious stache in his photo from this year

I am always curious how these conversations go, leading up to and after a season. It always felt under Lucia that after a season in which there was either a disappointing loss or the team didn’t meet expectations, lots jumped ship. Now everyone seems less worried. Is it Motzko? Players feel like they have unfinished business? That didn’t work out well for UND but obviously different circumstances.
"Hard work will beat talent, if talent doesn't work hard"
Doug Woog - 1990

This quote was written on the chalkboard in a lockeroom in the old Ralph Engelstad arena my Squirt team used the day after the Gophers used it and came into the game ranked #1 in the nation and lost 6-1 to a second rate Whioux team.

Overhead on SiouxSports.com - Why does every thread always turn into a "Gopher" thread? Is there a secret infatuation with them?

Pretty insulting to Munson. Munson was a guy that stuck it out, busted his ass and became a contributing member of the team that played hard whenever he was on the ice. Worthy of admiration for his effort and committment. Ramsey on the other hand, was a legacy player that was the epitome of the entitled player. Never known as a guy that was hard to play against. Whereas his dad was known as a bad-ass player, Jack was the polar opposite. His sister played a tougher game than he did.

Regarding Munson's and Ramsey's mustache's. Cullen looked like and played like he would have fit in with the guys playing for Herbie like Tom Younghans, Les Auge or Robbie Harris. Ramsey's stache just made him look ridiculous.

I chuckled my way through this. :D I guess you're forgetting that Ramsey was part of the best 4th line in college hockey history. :)

I agree 100% on Munson. He wasn't a skill player, but he had some game and worked hard around the front of the net - the location of which Ramsey is unfamiliar. Munson did more for the team this season than Ramsey did in four years.

I'm actually feeling ok with the goalie situation. By bringing in Boynton, I think is an upgrade over Moe. I know it is hard to judge Moe on his performance, but if Boynton makes Motzko feel better, I'm all for it. I think Moe is good goalie, but sometimes things don't work out and best of luck to him. That leaves us with the big question. Is Laffer staying or going? My suspicion is we will find out soon. Laffer seems like the ultimate team guy, and won't drag this out to jeopardize the Gophers losing out on a transfer portal guy. I hope he stays, but understand completely if he goes.

Isn't that a good question for one of the GPL journalists to pose to Jack? He shouldn't be too tough to locate.

Would be a great scoop. The sort of thing Hammy was always on top of.

The Gopher season is over. What's to prevent any writer from going directly to him? If by chance he's not planning on coming back, wouldn't limiting access be a moot point? No longer a Gopher. Then it's up to Jack what he wants to say or not say.

Not really journalism when your next story is dependent on the latest, pre-screened storyline passed out by an athletic department flunkie.

My guess is that most of the players are not giving out their personal info to any sports writers. Also, it is protocol to go through the SID to contact any of the players. By going around that would find you in the doghouse and future access denied. Since he is technically a student yet, that would also play into it. There may be certain people or journalist that Jack trusts, and maybe he will give them the inside scoop. The best way to find out if anything is going on with Jack is trying to contact "sources" with the Hurricanes.

Thanks for the explanation. Your last point seems to be the most likely possible source regarding Jack's next landing spot. Or maybe just watch his twitter account. Regardless I think if a sports reporter was really intent on digging out the story, they'd find a way.

If he comes back, he's a UFA next year right? Maybe another bonus is he can chase a spot that's more suitable to him as well

I doubt he gets a better situation next year. It is perceived he had a great year and Carolina is good and has goaltending issues. He would be a year older and may not have the gaudy numbers next year.

In my mind Moe entering the transfer portal means that Laffer HAS to be coming back or else Moe would just be walking away from the starting position which is not something I think he’d do after sitting behind Jack for two years. Just thinking out loud.

I don't think Moe is walking away from the starting job though, between the new USHL'er coming in and Moe and Bob not seeming to see eye to eye.

Where does the 'not seeing eye to eye' bit come from? Not doubting it in the least but I've clearly missed some commentary from Bob during the year.

I used the word "seeming." It's just a vibe Bob gives off when discussing Moe, especially last year.

Stupid question but does the extra year of eligibility apply to everyone on the team or just this year’s seniors? Like are Walker and McLaughlin still gonna be juniors next year? That seems kinda weird to me.

Just need clarification on the rule I obviously haven’t been paying attention enough.

The Top 6 in scoring for MN had nearly identical stats with about 1 PPG.

Ranta and Reedy tied for 1 PPG. Walker, McLaughlin, Meyers, and McManus just barely shy of that pace at ~0.93 PPG. It is too bad we lose Reedy and McManus, but I get we have a lot of recruits coming up and we can't lose a player, who might play for 3-4 years, to decommitment just to extend a senior into a 5th year.

Bummer. After 2 “meh” seasons, he was awesome this year and was really hoping he would be back for 1 more, but I would say given covid and whatnot, we were probably lucky to have him this year.

Wish him the best!
"Hard work will beat talent, if talent doesn't work hard"

This quote was written on the chalkboard in a lockeroom in the old Ralph Engelstad arena my Squirt team used the day after the Gophers used it and came into the game ranked #1 in the nation and lost 6-1 to a second rate Whioux team.

It will be interesting to see if/where he fits in that lineup. At least at the NHL level it may be tough for him to crack the meaningful minutes lines for a while. Probably needs some time in the minors regardless, but I hope it works out for him. He was a blast to watch especially this year.

Remember him playing in the opener at Amsoil in October 2018 and he scored a goal on a wicked wrister, the physical talent was clear that night, but he needed to develop the other aspects on his game & it really showed this year, he had a nice 3 year run, not surprised he signed, 💵 talks. Hope to see him playing in the NHL down the road.

I'm probably in a minority here, but he needed to move on. I don't think he played in the system very well, and at times he drove me nuts by holding onto the puck too long and failing to make the obvious connection. He missed the net a lot and turned the puck over way too much while the team was set up for a prolonged possession in the offensive zone. I don't want to bash a college kid, so let's just say there are other guys on the team with higher hockey IQs.

He definitely would have helped the team, had he stayed another year, but I think he needs to be in an NHL system where his style of play won't be tolerated for 5 minutes. Sometimes when a player's speed and skill exceed those of his teammates, there tends to be a little too much individual effort. He won't have that problem to worry about at the next level.

Hoping they spread out the scoring with the new stars coming in, because the goal tending and blue line will give them a chance to win every night.

I'm guessing he drove the coaches nuts with that holding the puck and circling around the zone routine. It was kinda fun to watch though.

I thought it was just this year’s seniors, but according the the Meyers article I would interpret this to mean everyone could benefit from an extra year should they choose:

“Under NCAA rules put in place to compensate for the time lost due to the pandemic, all players have an optional extra year of eligibility.”

I presume that means anyone on the ‘20-21 rosters - although last year’s seniors were the ones that really got hosed.

Good insight here. If and when his hockey IQ ever catches up to his physical skills he'll be tough to contain. Some players are given praise because they "see the ice well" but clearly this is one skill set he doesn't have...yet.
