Re: 2020-2021 Gopher Hockey Season Thread - Year 100 of Pride On Ice
On the podcast last night Jup, Vegoe and Drew talked briefly about a limited number of fans potentially being allowed into Mariucci at some point this season. I've been pretty optimistic that there is a chance that might happen but with a month and a half left who knows. I know it's pretty much a wait and see game but has anyone heard anything at all that might indicate whether or not that might happen? If so, what would that possibly look like?

That is the same rumor going here in Mankato as well. Both MSU and the Civic Center are working on a plan to have fans at the end of February, that's what a blue line member told me last week. No word on how many fans. Before the s**t hit the fan in October/November they were working on four pods of 250 fans, I don't see that happening especially if February's expectations meet the forecast Covid-wise.Rau4SkiUMah wrote: ↑Thu Jan 21 11:30 amOn the podcast last night Jup, Vegoe and Drew talked briefly about a limited number of fans potentially being allowed into Mariucci at some point this season. With the UK variant taking off in the US, look for plans to reverse themselves before too long.g-manpuck wrote: ↑Thu Jan 21 12:41 pmThat is the same rumor going here in Mankato as well. My kids go back to school in February. I don't expect that to last.

I read somewhere that kids who are in private schools have continued to attend class uninterrupted. Haven't heard of any reversals...

Anoka Hennepin schools had to close because they didn’t have enough teachers and no subs willing to come in. My wife’s office (guidance) had 5 people near her who were out with quarantine, including her, for significant periods.
My wife was out 23 days and never had the virus.

My coworkers kids go to a catholic k-8. They have had to stop in person classes 3 times to take 2 week distance learning breaks after school outbreaks. Her older sons hockey team all gave it to one another in November causing one of them.Bertogliat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 21 5:57 pmAnoka Hennepin schools had to close because they didn’t have enough teachers and no subs willing to come in. I certainly hope we can watch in person later this season even if it's just the final game of the regular season. It feels so wrong for us to be celebrating this milestone season from home.

I saw someone on Facebook pushing to let fans in for the Wisconsin series in two weeks. Obviously we'd all love to see fans at Mariucci for what would surely be an exciting series but with this UK variant taking off and Michigan putting a two week pause on athletics I just don't see that happening. I appreciate this fan's passion but let's be realistic.

I think it'd be great if the U offered season ticket holders some type of discounted merchandise opportunity for the 100 season. Since we can't be there, at least allow us to get something out of it. I'm willing to pay a reasonable price for something decent (like a jersey...)

Learned today that the team will be flying out to Columbus with the women's hockey team AND the volleyball team on a chartered 737. After the two hockey teams deplane the volleyball team will continue on to Maryland for their Friday/Saturday matches in College Park.
With the 737 the teams are expected to have plenty of room to maintain good separation, and of course everyone will be wearing masks.

As a practical matter, the only thing that makes this trip any different from a "normal" season trip to Columbus is that they chartered that big of a plane and have the two teams flying together. Much more concerned with any problems passing anything from one team to the other.gopher6 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 28 6:55 amI hope nothing happens to the 737 planeD2D wrote: ↑Wed Jan 27 7:26 pmLearned today that the team will be flying out to Columbus with the women's hockey team AND the volleyball team on a chartered 737. I don’t remember the whole story with Barry but he wasn’t a life long east sider. I believe he was born in North Dakota (western town, maybe Bismarck or Grafton?). Family moved to Detroit Lakes and Barry played his youth hockey there. I think Barry did two years with the NTDP so maybe just sophomore year at Johnson?

LaFontaine up for Hobey. It is also a bit strange that Ranta did not get into the first batch of candidates. Maybe it is because it is hard to separate Ranta, Walker, Meyers or McLaughlin, as they are all about the same. Also, no Cole Caufield on the list.
Edit-- Todd Milewski said he will be added soon

Am I the only who thinks it’s weird that his odds at winning an award for best college hockey player are affected by the fans of a player or team and their willingness to spend their time voting online?
Bigger the fan base (among other factors) the better your chance of being the top hockey player in the country?
I honestly think less of an award for including such a factor.

The fan vote is essentially the final tie-breaker as I understand it... it counts for like 1% of the actual voting. It's just for show.

Re: 2020-2021 Gopher Hockey Season Thread - Year 100 of Pride On Ice
The fan voting is more of a sideshow than actually impacting the award -- head coaches can nominate three players from their league and three players in the nation. I think usually though coaches just nominate players from their own team. There is the fan vote, but really there is a panel of 29 people who ultimately narrow it down to 10 candidates, the Hobey Hat Trick and winner. It doesn't technically say how much ther fan vote matters anywhere in the process.Bertogliat wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02 8:33 amAm I the only who thinks it’s weird that his odds at winning an award for best college hockey player are affected by the fans of a player or team and their willingness to spend their time voting online?

Also FYI -- Motzko didn't nominate anyone last year and just LaFontaine this year. Some coaches choose to get a little more liberal nominating guys -- eight schools nominated three players. Michigan put up Owen Power, Cam York and Kent Johnson, North Dakota put up Jordan Kawaguchi, Matt Kiersted and Shane Pinto, Minnesota Duluth put up Noah Cates, Cole Koepke and Nick Swaney, Boston College put up Spencer Knight, Matt Boldy and Logan Hutsko, Minnesota State put up Cade Borchardt, Nathan Smith and Dryden McKay, Maine put up Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup, Eduards Tralmaks and Adam Dawe, Lake Superior State put up Lukas Kaelble, Ashton Calder and Mareks Mitens, Sacred Heart University put up Marcel Godbout, Braden Tuck and Ryan Steele.

This coach nomination process is interesting. It's kind of like the Oscars or Golden Globes when you have multiple nominees for one show/film in a category. Do you have a better chance of winning because you have more nominees or does it hurt you because you split the vote across nominees?
It seems likely Lafontaine should make the top 10 if his play continues. He's been outstanding. Not sure on top 3 but it should would be nice to have a serious hobey candidate again for once.

Realistically, the committee usually does a pretty good job of narrowing down to the top 10, usually get the top 3 right, and then it's down to which of three reallyBertogliat wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02 12:37 pmSacred Heart feels they have three players worthy of a Hobey Baker nomination?

Re: 2020-2021 Gopher Hockey Season Thread - Year 100 of Pride On Ice
While I'm glad to see they put up a #1 total, it's no wonder the BT doesn't really care about bumping hockey if that's as many viewers as they can get. I'd be curious to see how many viewers a game on FSN draws recently and what it would be at its peak.
Currently under construction.

Would be interesting to see the LEAST watched FB or BB game ever...

Depending on how the rest of the season goes the Minnesota-Michigan series could give this past game a run for its money if they air it on BTN. Which they really should. With what could potentially be at stake and bringing in viewers from both the Michigan and Minnesota fan bases they'd be foolish not. What better way to advertise B1G Hockey

I saw a tweet this week that said this Gopher hockey game and the Gopher basketball game Purdue had the same TV share. The Gopher basketball game had to have pretty low ratings relative to big games.MNGophers29 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 03 12:13 amWould be interesting to see the LEAST watched FB or BB game ever...
Edit, I don't know the difference between ratings and share.
Per Nate Wells, the Gopher hockey game vs fOSU drew 164,810 viewers (4 pm ET). The Gopher basketball game drew nearly 300,000 viewers (5:30 pm ET).

That's correct. Both games drew a 0.06 share in the 18-49 demographic, which tends to be what matters most. In terms of raw viewers, the Gopher basketball game had 291,000. Wisconsin/Penn State, which led into the Gopher/OSU hockey game had 414,000 viewers, but only a 0.05 in the demo.Bertogliat wrote: ↑Wed Feb 03 9:35 am

So share is the % of viewers at that time?Maize wrote: ↑Wed Feb 03 9:45 amThat's correct. Both games drew a 0.06 share in the 18-49 demographic, which tends to be what matters most. Cole Caufield has jumped ahead of Lafontaine in the Hobey voting. I get it doesn't really matter but I hate seeing a Badger on top.

Sure would be sweet if the Gophers could shut him down this weekend, while generating plenty of offense for the sweep.JWG wrote: ↑Wed Feb 03 2:31 pmCole Caufield has jumped ahead of Lafontaine in the Hobey voting. I get it doesn't really matter but I had seeing a Badger on top.

Before the season started if someone told me the Gophers would be 15-5 at this point I would take it.
They need to get another long winning streak started.

Re: 2020-2021 Gopher Hockey Season Thread - Year 100 of Pride On Ice
Most likely the Gophers would need to win the next 6 games and either make it to the final game or win the B1G tournament to get the #1 seed. For that to happen the defense will need to clamp down like they did today and Laffer only give up 0-2 goals per game. Last year a post like this would be laughable, after last weekend even. But it is definitely possible to come close to this and make a nice run in the tournament if the Gophers play the way they are capable of playing.
Re: 2020-2021 Gopher Hockey Season Thread - Year 100 of Pride On Ice
I think they will need to go 5-1 to get the #1 seed in the B10 tourney. If they take care of business in the tourney, then they will be a number one at a regional.
Re: 2020-2021 Gopher Hockey Season Thread - Year 100 of Pride On Ice
Forgive me if this has been discussed a lot already. Are they still planning on using the Pairwise rankings for the tournament seeding? The Pairwise seems a little "off" this year (possibly due to the lack of non-conference games).

Re: 2020-2021 Gopher Hockey Season Thread - Year 100 of Pride On Ice
No, Pairwise is completely useless this year due to lack of inter-conference play. Nobody knows how the tournament field will be decided.

Re: 2020-2021 Gopher Hockey Season Thread - Year 100 of Pride On Ice
My understanding is that the Pairwise will not be used to pick the tournament field this year as it is fairly useless without non-conference games played. There isn’t a lot of understanding at this point about what will be used as criteria to pick the tourney field and do the seedings.

Gophers climb back to #4 in the polls leapfrogging WI again.
Interesting that in 5 losses, they've only lost to 2 teams.
Just two really bad weekends where they seemed to take the weekend off.

Really hope we meet Wisconsin in the B1G tourney and get a chance for revenge. I don't think they're better than we are and I don't think we're necessarily better than them. But I think when we're on our game we're a more complete team. Guess time will tell
