Your University of Minnesota Golden Gophers take on the University of North Dakota tonight at the X. In front of a projected-to-be sold out and raucous crowd, the two WCHA giants will battle for the coveted Broadmoor Trophy! Here's how both teams got to this point:

For North Dakota, it was really a tale of two seasons, they opened the campaign with a rough stretch of games, particularly in November and December, where they only won 1 of 8 league games. Particular low lights included a road sweep to Alaska-Anchorage, and a home sweep at the hands of Michigan Tech. However, one the calendar turned over to 2007, UND went on a tear, and only lost two games leading up the WCHA playoffs; two of their second half wins came against the Gophers at Mariucci. The famous "DOT" line has ripped teams to shreds, making light work of many second half opponents. The Whioux went on to promptly dispatch Mankato in the first round of the playoffs, and drubbed St. Cloud 6-2 in the Final Five semifinal.

The Golden Gophers had a bit of an easier ride in the regular season than North Dakota, they amassed the 2nd most overall wins in the nation (31), one behind the CCHA's Notre Dame. They also came in 2nd in goals scored (161), trailing only Michigan. This high octane offense saw the Gophers fly out of the gate with, a 22 game unbeaten streak. Finally losing in a close game against the BADgers on January 12th. 2007 has been off to a bit more of a challenging start for the Gophers, they have suffered two sweeps in the second half, at the hands of St. Cloud and North Dakota, which they will assuredly be looking to avenge tonight. However, despite some speed bumps in the second half, the Gophers came out of the regular season with the MacNaughton Cup. A Blake Wheeler hat trick saw the Gophers past the middling BADgers in the semifinal game at the X last night, to set up this face off against the two greatest rivals in college hockey, for a chance to hang yet another banner.

Yeah yeah yeah... I just pulled it off CHN and didn't want to go through the hassle of finding the old logo and shopping it on there for it to look nice. So blame CHN!!

I need to DVR the game and watch it later. Luckily I didn't sign up for Twitter until 2009 so I should be able to avoid spoilers.

Goddamn it, I was probably gonna watch the game, but wasn’t necessarily a “must watch” for me. Now, after reading this thread, I was instantly transported back to 2007 when I only had 1 kid who was 8 months old and nothing else going on when I lived and breathed for Gopher hockey. There isn’t enough beer in my fridge so I need to figure that out, but I have officially cleared my schedule!

Nicely done GG13!

Well, I am in the middle of building kitchen cabinets for our house, something I had planned with my parental leave a while ago and with 4 kids at home including a 4 week old, there are other things that require my time. Not tonight though!

Things to watch tonight--
1. I'm getting concerned about tDon's clothes as I saw Joyce shopping at an upscale clothing store in Wayzata
2. I just don't think Wheeler has what it takes to be a pro. Too soft and not a big game goal scorer.
3. I think Okposo is a very loyal guy. Bet he stays 4 years.
4. Jim O'Brien will break out soon. Ottawa drafted the right guy with him.
5. By watching him play, no way Ben Gordon ever goes into coaching.
6. There is a funny rumor that Penn St wants to go big time in hockey. That will never happen.
7. Are we still tailgating at the DQ on west 7th tonight?

Frazee has been the better goalie against Whioux this year even though he was pulled after one period back in January. He's made great strides to improve his game since then too, but we've got to stay out of the box to help him out or the DOT line is going to make us pay.

Agreed...not to be a "back in my day" take, but watching this game makes me wonder (or maybe I should say reinforces) if we'll ever see this type of talent in college hockey going forward in my lifetime...just feel like this was a peak that's hard to match. With that said, I've been a fan only since ~1998 so I would be curious to hear from college hockey fans who have been around a long time past that

So, to this point of the game, I honestly can't object to the officiating. The call on Lucia was a slight but iffy, but overall to that point, Medium Shep was, if anything, calling it tighter against the Whioux if anything

I'm sure, that, at the game, I was very unhappy, but that's a good wave-off

At the start of the third, we have a penalty I completely disagree with, bit I can understand why Shep called it.

Still teared up watching it and I knew what was coming.

Damnit I love Gopher hockey. One day it will return. One day. When it happens, we will be ready.

That being said, NOTHING fueled Gopher hockey Love like these battles with UND.

While I share your sentiments about embracing the realignments, I'm not so sure that today's game is as exciting as it once was, as exemplified in this game that was played 13 years ago. The compete level, the physicality, the sheer will to win on the ice, and yes the packed arenas and tremendous atmosphere - was simply extraordinary. All of which made the big games played back then so much fun to watch.

That would require opposing teams to travel... Good luck.

NCHC hockey is still close or at that level in games between top teams. Every level of hockey slowly gets better over time.

That and the BTHC was cursed with so many coaches needing to step down nearly all at the same time when it is such a small pond, so most of the teams are underperforming right now. As I mentioned in the other thread, we just need to be patient and the conference will get better.

I didn't see this in my quick read through the thread. Some crazy numbers here if you ask me.

Just finished watching. GREAT memories. That crowd, that atmosphere, that Rouser. Damn I miss all that. Be sure to scroll through the men’s hockey twitter page for some good vids and pics. I hope FSN will show some other classics. So much fun!

One of my favorite quotes:
Frank: “Unbelievable!”
Doug: “I believe it because I saw it..”.

So what if....
Every other/third year we started the college hockey season with a three day tourney at the X. Seedings based on previous year’s Pairwise rankings. Gophers, hawks, Jan, purple cows, and umtp... get downtown St. Paul involved....
Come up with a catchy name (First Five?) and an awesome trophy....

Boy, I have a tough time blaming it on compete level and sheer will to win The game is played/coached differently now than it was back then. I just watched highlights from the 2003 natty and even that was different than the 2007 game.

I don’t know that we will ever see the dominance from programs that we once did. There is so much parity all the way down to the youth level, then you throw the “off season” hockey that kids play and the development comes in waves at different levels for different kids.

I yearn for that style of hockey, I want to coach that style of hockey, but it just isn’t played that way anymore. Coaches and players have gotten smarter, there is more parity and there is a world of information available to anyone who wants to find it and make their game better.

That being said, it isn’t a will to win or compete level. Maybe that’s how it appears, but it’s all the other stuff that comes into play that makes it seem like that is the issue. Just my humble opinion.

Unfortunately the Gophers downward spiral coincided with the earliest years of a weak BTHC which made for an awful combination and thus leaving a bad taste in the mouths of many hometown fans. However the BTHC has become more competitive and the Gophers look like they are headed that way too. The NC schedule is also very compelling and there were signs last year that the athletic department and administration actually starting giving a rip about fixing the attendance.

I don't care what conference the Gophers will play in. The WCHA went through so many changes from the time I started paying attention in the early 70's and I never cared. Gophers hockey was exciting, the players were mostly homegrown, and that's my freaking team no matter what. Put them in the AIC I don't care - I will do everything I can to find their games online and when I finally come home I'll get season tickets.

A few things that stuck out to me:
- Talent on the Gophers squad - have we been anywhere near that since? I'm not sure we've had anything close to a Johnson or Goligoski on the blue line
- Talent on the green side...how they did not win a title with Toews, Ohsie, Chorney, and Porter is beyond me
- God I hate(d) Lamoureux, annoying and over-dramatic, plus he had a horrible game
- John Hill sightings made my stomach turn

Sad to think, but that was kind of the end of that great run Lucia had from 2001-2007.

If you noticed that line up, there were a few really good players - Wheeler, Goli, Johnson - but the lower tier players who stayed on, like Flynn, Fischer (picked #20 in the world and was thought to be), Barribal, Bostrom, Kaufman etc. never came close to the talent of the core of NHL players on that team. It was the ensuing 4-5 years after that game that were most painful...until Rau, Bjugstadt, Haula showed up on campus.

On the green puke side, all the guys you mentioned plus Duncan, who was a really good college hockey player. Gophers that game was something like 0-8 in power plays, which apparently had been good that year. I think they would have won by three goals if they could have scored on the pp.

Hey everyone, just a heads up that tomorrow on ESPN2 starting at 11am to 11pm, they are scheduled to show six college hockey games.
They all say "teams to be announced" so not sure what games these will be or if the Gophers will even be playing in any of the games.
Just thought I'd share, Go Gophs!

If it's the Deuce, I imagine that they will show reruns of Frozen Four games. If so, the 2002 championship would be a very good candidate - one of the best I have seen and not just for the outcome (and this year is only the 5th one I have missed since 1989).

Another really interesting one to show, although I doubt they would, is the 1996 Championship between the other UM and CC. It was an overtime game with many interesting delays due to an arena worker drilling through the ice and in to the coolant system, thus making the surface a sloppy mess. FWIW, that's also the same tournament with the infamous Mike Legg goal.

Where did you see this schedule? On both my app and the website, it just has football on tomorrow on ESPN2 and I couldn’t find hockey on any stations tomorrow.

This quote was written on the chalkboard in a lockeroom in the old Ralph Engelstad arena my Squirt team used the day after the Gophers used it and came into the game ranked #1 in the nation and lost 6-1 to a second rate Whioux team.

Overhead on SiouxSports.com - Why does every thread always turn into a "Gopher" thread? Is there a secret infatuation with them?

Actually it looks like a bunch of different days. A couple games Sunday, then next Thursday and Friday.

2002 Maine Championship is being aired next Thursday at midnight.

One thing that stuck out to me last night was the difference in size of that team vs the rosters we've had the last 5-6 seasons....was it just me?

I didn't go through the rosters by any means with height/weight, just using the eye test. At least through these lens, they looked just night and day bigger/ faster/stronger for the most part than what I'm more or less used to watching with Gopher hockey recently. Could just be the nostalgia factor though.

Looks like they were initially planning on showing those games tomorrow, but then decided to bump them to next week in favor of a Peyton Manning marathon.

If Wisconsin-Madison is the state's most prestigious university and the state itself is known as The Dairy State, does that mean UW is Bovine University?
