To me there is a really interesting dynamic next weekend that will probably have something to do with who wins.

Pedo was off the last week of the regular season and this weekend for the bye.

To me, 3 things can happen because of it:

1. They benefit from the rest and come out smoking and we're toast

2. No effects at all and to me it will be one heck of a game

3. They come out flat and rusty and we can jump on them early and it really helps us win the game

That about covers it...

In a one game series I hope it gives us the advantage. PSU is slow to get their game legs back and we pounce early. Get an early 3-0 lead and hold on to win 4-2.

I totally agree and acknowledge that. It's just been a tough go vs. them, based on the recent history is all I was stating.

Have to try and limit PSU's shots, weighted shot chart or not we can't give up 50+ shots as we have in the past. Playing with fire if we do.

If LaF stays hot we have a good chance. This PSU streak can't go on forever.

Finding a way to score goals and having LaFontaine stay hot is the only way this team wins and advances. I think Bob has said it the past couple weeks about the importance of scoring goals. That hot streak in late January/early February the team was scoring 4 or 6 a night. Things have cooled off to scoring less than three and they are struggling. They have to find that lightening in a bottle again.

Why is this game thread being discussed under “College” hockey and not “Gopher Hockey”? It’s a Gopher game isn’t it?

I would think the home team gets to choose.

IDK, we just need to get lucky vs this team one time and we move on, hopefully that happens. PSU's goaltending isn't exactly otherworldly and JL has been good and will have to be again most likely, even if PSU comes out flat they'll remember how to play hockey at some point.

Two years ago I remember PSU wore their grey alternates for both games at Mariucci. I believe we wore gold one night and white the other. Or, we might have worn gold both nights. Either way, PSU did wear a non-dark color alternate as the away team once.

I was wondering that too - If PSU would be dicks and say no if they thought it was something that could give us any kind of advantage. Obviously home team chooses their colors and probably has to ok what the away team has. We’ve seen notre dame wear green and the Gophers wear white in south bend, so I would imagine anything flies if the home team agrees to it.

Penn St will do what they always do. Strong forecheck, Shoot every chance they get, and crash the net. If LaFontaine doesnt give up juicy rebounds and our D controls the front of the net I expect a very close game.

Just using simple statistics the way the last 15 games have gone, I like out chances in a 1 and done type of game, but yeah the task does seem daunting.

This quote was written on the chalkboard in a lockeroom in the old Ralph Engelstad arena my Squirt team used the day after the Gophers used it and came into the game ranked #1 in the nation and lost 6-1 to a second rate Whioux team.

Overhead on SiouxSports.com - Why does every thread always turn into a "Gopher" thread? Is there a secret infatuation with them?

As I mentioned in another thread, we came frustrating close to winning each game at PSU a couple of weeks ago and PSU has since been idle, so we have more than an outside shot at pulling off the upset and heading to either Columbus or Ann Arbor for the championship game.

Just like on Sunday, strong defense, move them out from in front. Don’t jibby jab at the puck with your stick. Our strength is speed and puck movement, they are big and dominant. Outskate and out play them. And play gopher hockey. (Cue Herb Brooks)...

In a way I hope Pedo State says “no” to the Wooger jersey’s. Maybe that would motivate the Gophers a little more.

If it's up to Guy Gadowsky, I bet he will be on board with the Wooger jerseys. The Gophers have to score early and block a ton of shots to win this game. I sure hope they win this game! I'm not ready at all to go until fall without Gophers hockey! Go Gophers!

Listening to Motzko show.

Talked about how clutch our PP has been???? 😳 I wanted to scream at the radio to change things up!!!!😄

25 likely out for year. Injury to leg when fell or fallen on not hit to head.

Need to win 2 games for pair wise.

Good non major call on Sorenson

Inconsistent penalty calls no bearing in results.

Talked about not letting Penn St get in behind our young 3 Freshmen D.

It pains me to say this, but it seems like when we play them, PSU has the edge in speed.

EDIT: TRY TO GET PERMISSION
This is a major FAIL by someone on the Gophers staff. Asking for permission? EFF THAT. Lack of vision here. I would've just done it - bring ONLY those gold Woog jerseys with zero backup uniforms available.

Would it be worth a 2-minute penalty to start the game? Hell yeah. BONUS - it would've echoed that Woog story wherein he could've started a game without a 2-minute penalty (forgot what the infraction was, exactly), but he told the refs he wanted to start the game a man down because it would be a great way to motivate his team and build off of that momentum. Or something like that.

TL;DR ===> It's easier to ask forgiveness than ask permission.

Ohio State women's team last year brought black jerseys with black lettering. They wore them again the second day and started the game with a two minute penalty.

Gophers did not score on the PP. Ohio State won the game 3-2.

Maybe we luck out and Penn State opts for "no spectators" due to COVID-19. Any little bit helps.

To exorcise the demon (4 consecutive losses to end the 2018 season)...it’s only fitting to travel to PSU & get a win playing in the belly of the beast... in order to extend the 2020 season ☝️

It is Penn State's spring break, though it's the tail end as they restart classes Monday.

Plenty of empty seats on Ticketmaster, contemplating flying out, any GPLers going to Happy Valley?

You really gonna risk that trip if there is a chance they block fans form coming?

Are they seriously considering no fans at the game, thought that was just a comment here, haven't seen official report!?

There are several schools that have told students to not come back from Spring Break, all classes will be remote until further notice. Some are also already saying no spectators at sporting events, and the report here earlier that the Governor in Ohio is saying that as well. I certainly wouldn't be planning any travel like that for a game given how things have changed over the last 72 hours or so.

On that front, I'm VERY interested to see what happens with the Frozen Four, given that I've already paid for the flight/tickets/etc.

We booked with delta and so far they’ve offered no change fee for flights through April 30 (booked before March 9). I would hope the frozen four gives us our money back.

I'm with you on this one. I'm sure the NCAA would refund the tix. My hotel, and car can be cancelled, and the airfare would be my major concern. We have a month, so hopefully it will calm down by then.

That about covers it...
In addition, the last time the Gophers were in Happy Valley (about three weeks ago), they tied the Friday evening game 3 - 3 (losing the extra point in the 3 on 3 OT in the last 25 seconds). They led 3 -2 for about 2 minutes in the 3rd period. Their shooting % was 13% (to 6% for PSU).

They were more improved in the Saturday afternoon game, scoring first ~3 minutes into the game and adding a "thing of beauty" second goal with ~1:15 left in that period (leading 2 - 0). However after PSU scored a goal in the 2nd period to make it 2 - 1 for the Gophers, PSU scored two goals within 31 seconds in the 3rd period to win the game 3 - 2. PSU's shooting % was 7.14% while the Gophers' was 8.69%.

Interestingly enough, the first game was played without penalties by either team. And that carried over into the second game until PSU was charged with a slashing penalty (knocking Lafontaine's stick out of his hands) about 5 minutes into the 2nd period (counting the overtimes that was almost 100 minutes of penalty free play). The Gophers' only penalty was about 6 minutes into the 3rd period.

Rewatching those two games today, I would have to say that if the Gophers can come into Happy Valley and play like they did against the Fighting Irish last weekend, i. e., play "good, Gopher Hockey" as Paul Martin would say, then PSU can be beat!

Go Gophers!

On a lighter note, if PSU does ban fans/students from attending the game, that would decidedly work in our favor. Since, you know, we're used to playing in an empty arena.

Well the whole regional thing was from the Don Lucia era and even he won the 2015 Big Ten Tournament in front of all 2 Hockeytown fans who weren't watching Michigan or Michigan State in the NCAA Basketball Tournament.

I just say play rock, paper, scissors. McLaughlin is 1-0 this year, so send him out there for the win.

I wonder if any of the games with no fans will pull an Atlanta Falcons and have piped in fake crowd noise. OSU won't be much of an issue without fans, but I'd bet an empty arena will sting PSU.
