All 3 forwards on one side of the ice. Weak side wide open.

They are watching the puck right now instead of skating and trying to control. They are letting PSU walk all over them.

They gain zone entry finally, pin the puck along the boards, with only 1 teammate to help keep possession which of course they lose.

Maybe the Power Outage will turn on right now!

Yeah I don't even know what to say. We're like the wily coyote against the road runner...only a matter of time before the anvil falls on their heads. Gophers with much better chances tonight and didn't finish....Nelson with a cross bar and a juicy 3rd period rebound in front of an open net....no goals.

Under ordinary circumstances I'd say this is hard to believe, but PSU for whatever reason is just Kryptonite to the Gophers....wow.

Gophers not nearly good enough on the power play tonight.

It all starts with the zone entry and the guy doing it isn’t very good. Why they keep putting 3 there instead of someone more capable is mind boggling.

We had some chances to make it 3-1 but obviously that didn’t happen. This team isn’t quite there yet and got out possessed by a better team all weekend but it was close they had their chances and honestly I have no idea why they don’t just put LaCombe/Johnson on the PP in an attempt to at least make it viable.

Overall I’m not upset with the play this weekend. Especially when I think back to what my expectations were in December. But the two things that have me seething are the power play and the inability to pick up the second man on the rush.

Disappointing that it happened, but I saw this coming one of these final three weekends and unfortunately it has come to pass. The most upsetting part about it is that tonight we gave away the lead to a Russian on the 40th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice and BTN showed a PSU fan proudly waving the Russian flag after the game, albeit Putin's flag and not Kosygin's.

On the upside, a resurgent Michigan no longer concerns me as much as it did a couple of days ago after Notre Dame held them to just an EAG and swept them in Ann Arbor. Can't take them lightly, but I feel a lot better about next weekend.

0-7-1 in our last 3 years at PSU. Including the awful 0-4 in one season as we were swept back to back a couple years ago. It’s sad.

Pretty amazing, even for here, that people are losing their mind about a tie and a one-goal loss on the road in a place where we usually lose by a half-dozen. The team has been a ton of fun to watch all season, has clearly closed the gap with the best teams in the conference, and is one successful home series away from winning the conference title in Bob's second season. I highly doubt anyone would have objected to this scenario back in October.

They had to "Re-learn" how to crawl; they're working on walking right now and they'll get to running soon. It's frustrating, but leaps beyond the past few seasons.

Well, to be fair it was pretty much a make-or-break, season-saving weekend. It's not just this game or this weekend. It's an embarrassing ofer whatever against PSU.

Losing to PSU is right up there with UMD and other in state schools. The futility is maddening. Worse, this may have ended their season...just as it did a couple years ago when a more experienced Gophers team went 0-4 against the mighty lions.

Now to win a title they'll need to sweep a smarting MI team who was beaten up by Notre Dame, while the real plumb of a post season at-large bid has probably evaporated.

I said before the weekend that the chances were slim the Gophers would win three of the next 4 games. Well, they met their fate on Friday night by blowing a late 3rd period lead and then blew it again the next night.

We can be overly dramatic here and elsewhere in this town, but I don't think it's fair to say folks are "losing their minds" just because of a winless weekend at PSU. If anything, people seem upset that we were in position to win late in the game both nights before the rug got pulled out from under us twice, myself included. There wouldn't be this much saltiness had PSU had a 3-0 lead before we pulled within 1 and still lost 2-3. Sure there'd be frustration, especially when we're coming down from our high for the 9-2-1 stretch, but had PSU scored first tonight, we'd be talking about how our boys battled back.

The sky falls here every time we lose. You should know this by now.

No doubt it was disappointing to let leads slip away two nights in a row.

Big weekend coming up. Let’s dust ourselves off and get back on the horse. We have what it takes to beat Michigan; it won’t be easy, but we are home, it’s senior weekend, and should be hungry after what just happened. Our destiny is still in our hands. JUST WIN.

Go Gophers!

I just finished watching the first. What a great period, too bad some of those chances and pipes didn’t go in. WTF happened after that?! Damn.

I think I’ll save the other two period for tomorrow.

Agreed, I think Bob has the team trending in the right direction in terms of style of play/results and they just need a touch more top end talent to get to where gopher hockey ought to be.

I'm curious why Bob juggled the lines last night when we were still playing well?

They played a solid three periods this weekend - it's just too bad they weren't consecutive. Regardless, there are some good things going on. Unfortunately, they need help from the Red Menace to take the title and get the bye, assuming they can sweep Ugly Helmets.

Overall, I have nothing against PSU. They play a solid 60 minute game and never stop moving their feet. Although Gadowsky is just a smarmy ass that has an eminently punch-able face.

What was so disappointing is the first might have been their best period of the year....they were flying. It might’ve too much to ask to sustain that for a whole game but it would have been nice to win after going into the first intermission up 2.

And just a terrible turnover in the offensive zone. Can they not see maroon when trying to find someone to pass to?
There was a LOT of this. I call it panic passing or passing to no one. The PSU players always seemed to know where someone would be. We did a lot of throwing the puck somewhere hoping someone would be there.

You have to admire their system, the way they're constantly moving and finding open lanes to make an uncontested pass. I especially like how they use their open D to make a safe short pass to the middle, making it so easy to break out of their end. The key is all five skaters are involved, not just one D passing it to a well-covered wing on the wall.

In terms of not getting bottled up/stuck in our own zone for minutes on end I think the Gophers have made great progress in this regard, but we still saw stretches this weekend that were painful reminders of what used to occur all too frequently. We'll go into defend-only mode where everyone is pretty much stationary, similar to what you see when they're killing a penalty. This makes it way too easy for the opponent, whose players are moving, to keep passing the puck around until they get a point-blank opportunity from close in. You can see this building until that prime opportunity happens, and it's either a near-miss, or a goal. While the team is improved in this area, there is still work to do.

As was mentioned earlier, PSU has alot of seniors. Just imagine if the Gophers had Rem and CM on the powerplay Saturday night. The fact is the Gopher's are improving and if they face PSU in the playoffs, hopefully the outcome is different. Looking forward to this coming weekend, it will be fun!

I had a bunch of friends over for some brisket Saturday night, so the game was on in the other room. After the game, Big Ten network has a special on gophers from the Herb era. Does anyone know where I can find that video? I can't find it on the Big Ten network site.

This series, both games they didnt get beat, they were ahead and they lost. Penn St was beatable, that’s the frustrating part. The games they have won they were battling back after getting scored on or behind early. It’s too bad after they put themselves in a great position Winning games, sweeps, they were blocking shots, put their body on the man shooting, when they aren’t it looks like they are standing around in our end. Whats with the slow play on the PP? Move, get open, make them shift, take advantage. I might be the only one who doesn’t care about Big Ten playoffs, only If it helps them make the NCAA tourney. That’s all that matters. Take first in big ten, nice. Make NCAA and play like we’ve seen and beat somebody big, huge. Not dreaming of frozen four or winning it this year. Just take down a rival.

We've seen many a Gophers team play like this in the past. I will be honest in that I don't know if Bob employed anything similar when at SCSU, but would love to see them get to that point. Especially on the PP which has been frustrating to watch at least in the limited number of games I've been able to see so far.
Currently under construction.

Sorenson out
I wish I was as optimistic about Sorenson's future stardom as Clymer is.
I wouldn't be so quick to make a predicition on Sorenson's potential. He's probably played less hockey and done less hockey specific training than just about anyone on the roster. I'd bet he's a very different player next year.

Hey Bill the Dog,

The name of the program was: Big Ten Elite 1979 Minnesota Hockey it airs on BTN. I have seen it before, but I DVR'd it again. It is not scheduled to air it again in the next 2 weeks. I wonder if BTN sells it as a video?

Hope you can find it. Great story.

Reminds me a bit of watching the old videos of Gophers teams at the State Fair when growing up... the grainy videos with voice overs.
