#18 Gophers @ #11 Penn St. Feb 21 & 22

Post by frozen4champs » Mon Feb 17 11:42 am

Battle for 1st place in B1G 10.

Friday 7:30pm BTN
Saturday 5:30pm BTN

Need a split at the bare minimum.
PSU beat Gophers 8-2 & 6-3 in November
Game 2, Gophers were up 3-1 and gave up 5 straight goals.
All 3 Gopher goalies got lit up.
My guess LaFontaine will start game1.

It's not like PSU goes undefeated every year. Other teams beat them, no reason we can't.

Toughtest and most important series of the season thus far (based on on prior outcomes). This is the equivalent of WI football for us - just can't seem to find a way to win against these guys. This needs to be the weekend we figure it out!

Interesting that Michigan has the best goal differential in those standings.

15-14-0
but....
2-11 in the last 13
0-6 in last 6 at their place

I believe that's even worse than the 13 game run against UMD (2-10-1)

Guy Gadowsky has had their number the past few years. I'm not sure if it's a confidence thing or what it is. Hopefully this weekend will be the time to change things. They really need to sweep this weekend. Go Gophers!

Since PSU is off the final weekend of the regular season, we should probably expect to battle extra hard this weekend.

Definitely dont "need" a split, but a split would basically eliminate PSU and could potentially lock up the 1 seed before the final weekend.

They really just need a single point to keep hopes alive. 1 pt and a final weekend home sweep of um still wins the 1 seed, the conf, and honestly probably puts them around 14 for PWR and right on bubble

Agreed, and hopefully the mindset in the locker room is that a sweep is a must. Get the sweep and let's roll!

It would be even better if Notre Dame figures its crap out and shows up this weekend in Ann Arbor. Looks like that series is before our games on BTN each day this weekend.

Hoping the mindset in the locker room is that they are not concerned about what other teams do, and solely focusing on WINNING all the remaining games.

Saturday is the 40th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice. I can't think of a better way to celebrate and honor nine Gophers and the head coach of that team than by completing a sweep of a school that might have never started playing hockey if not for the impact Team USA had.

Jim Dahl has provided updated material on college hockey ranked

With 4 games remaining, info as follows with my own feelings afterward:

Win 0: ranked 20 or worse; need to win conference tournament
Win 1: ranked 19-20; need to win conference tournament
Win 2: ranked 16-18; need to win conference tournament
Win 3: ranked 12-14; would definitely need to win a game or two in B10 tournament
Win 4: ranked 9-11; would feel safe with 1 win in B10 tournament, but probably locked for an at large

Huge weekend coming up. Absolutely cannot drop both games. Team showed a lot of resiliency on the road last week. will need to again this weekend

If they win 3 they will win the conference and therefore "or two" would mean a B10 tournament win and auto bid.

Also. Sweeping Penn State would effectively end their season unless they win the B10 tournament. So some extra motivation there as well

24-25% the last 7 years with one season being 29%. It seems they were more stingy on the penalty kill during that time too.

Gophers were 24% last year and 25% 2 years before that.
"Hard work will beat talent, if talent doesn't work hard"
Doug Woog - 1990

This quote was written on the chalkboard in a lockeroom in the old Ralph Engelstad arena my Squirt team used the day after the Gophers used it and came into the game ranked #1 in the nation and lost 6-1 to a second rate Whioux team.

Overhead on SiouxSports.com - Why does every thread always turn into a "Gopher" thread? Is there a secret infatuation with them?

In how many of those years did he have a 25+ point defenseman? Lack of a single legit offensive defenseman since Reilly left is the biggest reason the Gophers have been struggling for years, IMO.

In the one year Bischoff looked comfortable, the team was better as well. I am really hoping Lacombe makes the jump next year.

I think their overall team speed just leaves the Gophers in the dust, and no shot is a bad shot.

And the Gophers miss the net too much.

If Wisconsin-Madison is the state's most prestigious university and the state itself is known as The Dairy State, does that mean UW is Bovine University?

Today's NHL is all about speed, and it trickles down at all levels. This team can skate better than recent Gopher teams but it needs to become a team strength in the next few years.

We skate right into their coverage. They over pursue, which should leave guys open if we spread out and find the soft spots. Alas we cannot figure that out yet.

Yea. A lot of turnovers in the neutral zone and offensive blue line. Penn State will kill us with their transition game. Got nothing get it deep

Why is PSU such a mind f***?
It’s not, they’re just a more talented team top to bottom and don’t have upperclassmen playing under a different coach than the one they started with. That’s not to say we can’t compete or play better than that period but we’re just not quite there yet.
<GophDogFan> yep, so sad... you have a new moment, when your uncle gets mad because you got the best of him. the last straw was when i told him that UND's hockey program is like crystal pepsi: Nobody every liked it.

That goal was interesting in that Johnson took a quick glance away from the puck towards the streaking forward and the puck came right across without him knowing. Just bad timing. Not that he would have had time to react, but just a quick look can screw you.

Gophers very slowly getting going a bit. Ideally hold them off and steal one at the end of this period on one of the first good shots on the goalie.

We had ten shots before our goal. How did we still only have ten after?
Pretty sure their stats guy continues to not know what constitutes a shot and is padding their stats.

Penn State is very good at throwing the puck to open space where they expect their players to be. They just know where their teammates will be at all times. I expect we get there in time but we aren’t a cohesive group like them yet.
