I think the Gopher have thrown more checks this weekend than they did the last 5 years Lucia was the coach.

Team looks legit so far.

btw at least so far the forwards helped a lot that period in the defensive zone. It was especially noticeable at the end of the 1st - guys moving their feet and not hoping the next guy up was going to take the man for them. Everyone getting into the action.

It was a very fun game. As others have said, they looked good. Passes are much better, they are seeing where their team mates are (god I hated those bad blind passes), they were aggressive. Nice check into the Ohio bench, that riled up the crowd! They were on Ohio like burrs on a dog. As tBob commented earlier, they played with swagger. Ohio was pissed off and it didn’t help them. The little tantrum after the first ENG was a sweet sight to witness.
That said, Ohio will be out for blood tonight, BUT last night showed we have the stuff, now do it again! :dup:

We’ll be in sec 17, row 9, seats 9-10. I’ll be wearing the obnoxious blaze orange parka. Come say hi!
I spy with my little eye.....from section 8. 🙂

Does anyone know what Nappier was so upset about last night? At the end of the game he was jawwing at the refs before and after the handshakes. Didn't seem upset with the Gophers during the handshakes though.

He was still bitching about the puck in his breezers.

No problem with allowing the goal to count. Gophers need to ratchet up their energy level to match OSU's or it's going to be a one-goal game very soon.

Can someone explain why? I was clearly directed in off his skate. Especially considering that was the call on the ice.

Pretty sure the rule changed. Directing it is ok. Kicking it is not.

Munson with one of the better forechecks I've seen in a long time, forced an OSU turnover behind their net and it almost turned into a scoring opportunity. This is a completely different team right now. It wasn't too long ago they were the team giving up 40 shots and finding more ways than not to lose.

We shall see. The stretch from the UMD series through @OSU was real rough, but to respond going 5-1 out of the break is nice. But they can't let down @UW nor when a much a improved MSU comes into 3M, especially since the next 2 series after are @ND and @PSU. 2 home games out of 8 won't be easy.

Get 4-5 wins and/or 3 losses or less and by then I think we could safely say they're on the way back.

I would amend that to the first half of the first period Friday was not great at all, but the next 5 1/2 were very good.

Best 6-periods since I can't remember when. This was old time Gopher hockey this weekend, and I thought they were maybe even better tonight. OSU came out and pushed hard in the third to get that goal. Once they did, the Gophers pushed right back and got one of their own. Fun game tonight...hope they can finish the year strong and keep getting better....signs of good things to come.

What a good problem to have. Not picking between 5.5 and 6 good periods. Usually it’s between 1 and 1.5 on a weekend.

Motzko was surprised to hear music coming from the locker room on Friday after the win. Is he okay with that going forward?

Man, I haven't been this jacked up after a game for a long time. I'm probably not going to be able to sleep for awhile, which is a bit strange considering that I kept yawning during the game tonight. Anyone up for a game or 2 or 12 of racquetball?

It was still far from sellout, but would anyone have thought 10 years ago that a series against OSU would be this well attended, let alone be such an important weekend?

Solid effort by the whole team. I was thinking it could get chippy because the Buckeyes were taking a few wacks at some Gophers. The only disappointment is they could have done a little better with the Woog tribute. Should have mentioned at the arena that they were going to do something after the 1st period, as a lot of people were not in their seats. Good crowd and keep #WinningForWooger

Pretty sure this is the first time I’ve ever worn a maroon jersey into Mariucci. (I had a #3 jersey I doctored up for Wooger night).

Maybe I’ll just keep wearing it....

What a great weekend of Gopher Hockey. They were really playing as a team and seemed much more aware of one another and made some great passes. I hope now that they have a little taste of what they can accomplish together we’ll see more of it. So much fun to be on the winning end for a change, it had been too long since the Battle Hymn echoed through the building.

Here’s hoping they grind it out the rest of the season and keep giving us reasons to be optimistic. :drinks2:

GO GOPHERS!! :M: :M2:

LaFontaine might have horseshoes up his ass (his words) but it looked like an ice pack taped on his left shoulder in that post game interview. can’t be too serious as he played again tonight but hope it doesn’t turn into anything more serious.

My daughter is playing in the U10 tournament in Stillwater, so we decided to go to the game. It was her first men’s game and my son’s (8 yrs old) first gophers home game. They were both glued to the game and my son has officially crossed into the diehard gopher fan realm.

No problem with allowing the goal to count. Gophers need to ratchet up their energy level to match OSU's or it's going to be a one-goal game very soon.
Can someone explain why? I was clearly directed in off his skate. Especially considering that was the call on the ice.
I didn't have a problem with the goal counting. Looked more like extending the stride and the blade happened to be at the right angle. Even seeing the replay in tha arena I said to my seatmate that they would reverse the call and make it a goal.

Good solid weekend of hockey. Saturday night was a good crowd, but less students than Friday. I'd still guess about 7500 people there - nice to see. Ranta was a beast all weekend. Not sure who stuck a quarter in him, but i'm happy to see it. Unfortunately, if he continues to make this kind of noise the rest of the season, it's entirely possible the Avalanche come knocking.

Regardless, it was a good weekend of Gopher Hockey. Now let's hope they can keep that energy up against the AWFUL-Gers next weekend.

What a fun series! I know I would feel different if we had lost but dang the Gophers looked good.

I don't like the rule about the skate deflection but knew they would count the goal as soon as I saw it. If anything his skate was moving away from the goal.

The student section was a little soft last night. I would love to see that fill up. They should whatever they can to get students there including free tickets.

I'd like to think a few years from now we'll be pointing to this weekend as the weekend the worm finally turned back.

I had a great time at the game last night! Played like the Gopher teams of old that I remember. :D A friend gave me the ticket and it was such a good time. Yes, I agree they could have done a better job with the Woog Celebration last night. So many of his players he coached came back to honor him. And after the second period I slowly climbed up from row 12 to watch the rest of the game from the top. (I have a knee that needs replacing!) I was watching a dad with three kids and I recognized him... it was Casey Hankinson with his two children plus a friend. It was so good to see him and I got a huge hug and we chatted for a minute (I was a volunteer for some of the Player activities back in the late 1980s - 1990s.) That capped an exceptional evening. I am so thankful that I got to go to this game. Plus I hate Ohio State!!! Hope the Gophers can continue their winning ways! GO Gophers!!! :M:

I sure hope so! Until they finally stop looking like a deer in Guy Gadowsky's headlights, it's hard to get too excited.

Weekend was great! A very good game, I think last night was even better then Friday. Loved the stick salute and then skating over to the student section.

We laughed all game because we had 4 hockey players behind us from other schools: Mankato and ND were two. All recent graduates. We couldn’t figure out what brought them all there but the running conversation was a riot. First the very serious and long running discussion for the rest of the night...it was like battle planning. Which bars at which time, who had what beverages already back at their place, and the hilarious excitement over the fact that Blarneys was having a bikini contest! Texting, phone calls, who knows what lead to the discovery the contest started at 1am. Previous plans needed to be adjusted. The whole conversation started over. My husband whispered he remembered those days where the mere hope of seeing women in a bikini was paramount. :biggrin2:

I hope all four of them made it to Blarneys and it was worth the effort.
If liars pants did catch on fire, watching the news would be so much more fun!

I like what Brodzinski said. He mentioned that he and some of the other young players came together during the break and decided they wanted to be the class to turn things around. It showed this weekend. :D

There will be stinker games, but if they can keep playing like they did against OSU, they will at least be entertaining - and there is hope!

One other thing I remembered on the way home this morning after I saw the Strib writeup was the pregame "showdown" between McLaughlin and the Buckeye backup goalie. I always find it interesting on the playmanship of who is last off the ice. The Buckeye goalie would not leave the ice nor would Blake. So, finally the goalie skated over to Blake and they played rock, paper , scissors to determine the winner, which was Blake. Pretty funny, but IMHO, the home team should always have the courtesy of leaving the ice last.
