That man loved Gopher Hockey so much and MN hockey. What a bummer. RIP and the best to his family.

The Stars left when I was 10 years old. Doug Woog and the Gophers were bigger than life during that period. I will never for get those memories.

Condolences to his family. What a sad day for the hockey community.

When I was in high school we scrimmaged against Wooger’s South Saint Paul teams. No refs, coaches on the ice with whistles. He certainly had a lot to say. He was a character. RIP, Coach.

This is the only place you need to go to learn about Doug. Boy, he was awesome. Check out my signature. That had guided me life in a lot of different ways over the years.

Oof. I had the opportunity to chat with Coach Woog 2-3 times over the years, including an hour-long conversation somewhere around 2004-2007 at Joe Senser’s in Bloomington during a Sunday night WCHA opening round series between North Dakota and Mankato. I told him that despite my disdain for the Gophers, I truly wished he had coached a national champion. He said in reply, “thanks...that means a lot to me, especially coming from a North Dakota fan.”

My condolences go out to the Gopher hockey family tonight. I’m sorry for your loss. God bless you, Coach Woog.

The all (or almost all) MN thing is a huge reason I fell in love with Gopher hockey as a kid. And Coach Woog was behind that.

RIP Wooger. :(

Talked with him a couple times over the years, but my favorite memory was at an F5 (or rather, on the way to the arena). Bunch of us (in various WCHA unis) saw him and just started chanting "WOO-GER! WOO-GER!" He was a bit startled at first, then looked over and realized a WHOLE bunch of hockey fans were simply giving respect, the way we knew how. He laughed and waved and tipped his hat to us. Class act all the way.

I got to go to the Doug Woog camp one year as a kid. Fun memories up there.

In 2001 our team played in the Section Final at Mariucci. The bus dropped us off in the back players entrance and Woog was standing just inside the door smiling ear to ear.

:( He was central to the Gopher program I loved from eighth grade on. My favorite memory was a late night bus ride after a game in Madison. My friend and I were on the bus and on hops the Wooger. I think he was happy and surprised to see a couple of Gopher fans and was great. A sad day for the Gopher family. Prayers out for his family.

Such devastating news. He was a great coach and a great television analyst. Miss him so much on the broadcasts.

My only encounter with Coach Woog was in 2004 after the NCAA playoff loss to Duluth in Grand Rapids, MI. I was waiting for my wife to pick me up after the game and Woog came out of the stadium. I talked to him for about 15 minutes about the game and how the players were taking the loss.

Then Coach Woog walked to the parking garage to our right. Then I saw him walking towards another to the left. Then to another.... he obviously had forgotten where he had parked.

A special type of person.

My favorite Woog memory was when a friend and I met him at a pregame gathering at a DU-Gopher series in Denver. He stopped to BS for awhile and asked where we were sitting. Got us on the broadcast that night and mentioned us by name. He stopped by the pregame the next night and we talked hockey for about a half hour. So genuine.

One of my best memories of the Wooger was him, on a Gopher broadcast, telling a story about convincing Phil Housley to move to defense because he'd have a better chance to get a college scholarship as a d-man. Frank laughed for about 30 seconds. (ok, maybe that was me).

RIP Coach.

One thing that you always had to respect about the man was his passion for Gopher Hockey, especially after his coaching tenure came to less than ideal end and some wanted to run him out of town. He could have easily gone on to coach someplace else or withdrawn to his home and sulked, but instead he chose to continue being the ambassador that he was without the coach's whistle and staying involved with the team he loves in his new TV role sharing his wisdom with countless fans, even frequently telling us what we didn't want to hear because we needed to hear it like he would as a coach. It did get a little uncomfortable watching his health start to deteriorate towards the end of his time with FSN, but it was clear he wanted to stay on even longer and much would have been lost had he stepped down earlier than he did.

Wow this is hitting me harder than I'd have thought. Really sad day. My fandom predates his time at the U, but he absolutely had my attention the whole time he was there and then when he was in the booth it was always such a treat. The man oozed love for the game but more importantly for people. He deserved a title but even without it he goes down as a legend.

RIP The Wooger :(

How much did Wooger love hockey? During either my freshman or sophomore years I was playing a JV game as SSP. Woog spent a lot of time on the SSP bench during JV games and would basically 'coach' both teams. The benches were right next to each other and he would stand in the back row between benches. Many times after finishing a shift Wooger would either call us to come over - or just walk over - and proceed to coach us on our game even though we were the other team. BTW, he knew everyone's name on our team.

Amazing man who truly loved hockey!

Wooger was the best, quick story I saw on Twitter, guy said he saw woog spreak at 2003 HS banquet, he told the Wayzata kids to put their cellphones away, and then explained to the Moorhead kids what cellphones were, hilarious.

Glen is gone, Herbie is gone and now Wooger. I was a senior in high school when he took over SSP and when my friends and I were at the games at Wakota he was always cool to talk to us. I went to Brady (Catholic school) and he enjoyed shooting the sh*t about the old private school tourney. My wife worked for several years at a florist on Robert Street in West St. Paul; he would come in frequently and she always said he was a very nice fellow.

It's getting pretty dusty in here while I'm typing this. Better go stir the air around a bit. RIP Wooger. You were much loved and will be greatly missed. :( :( :(

Wooger scolded me once for not playing college hockey for the sole reason that he thought my last name would sound cool with the broadcasters

I didn't have a chance to follow the Gophers too much growing up since I was a military 'brat'. My only exposure was around the Christmas holidays when we came back to MN and you'd get a Gopher hockey game on one of the local stations.

It became a huge deal to me when I got to the U in 1993, so Woog and Lucia have been the only coaches I really know. I met Doug once at Stub and Herbs after a game (he was still the coach) and he signed an old Gopher Hockey hat. We chatted with him and his friends for a bit over a drink and he was such a genuine guy.

t's a damn shame the never led the Gophers to a title. At least where he is now he doesn't have to hear Randy Skarda hitting the post any longer.

I remember when Buetow left in disgrace... there were signs all over Dinkytown and around the area which read: WE WANT WOOG!

I had no idea what that was all about... then Coach Woog came into the Arena and we had some fun for a few years...

Sad that he never got to the National Championship and won it. RIP Wooger

Not to detract from the Wooger memories, but I wasn't alive so what made Buetow leave in disgrace? Just the two seasons and 3 out of 4 with no banners didn't meet Gopher hockey expectations?

I didnt really get to know who Wooger was until his time was long done at the U and as I've just had the chance to read memories from others and in this thread. So sad to hear of his passing and that a huge ambassador of Gopher Puck, no, the University of Minnesota had passed. RIP Doug, you will be missed but clearly the legacy will live on with how much he gave to the communities he was a part of.

This my favorite “Woogism”. There is a 100% chance I was at this game, so wish I would have witnessed this.
Story (Source Unknown)
Another great moment was back around 95 or 96. I was waiting in the student line up at UND to get into the old Ralph with a buddy of mine who attended school there. We got out of line and went into the arena lobby to warm up as the gophers bus pulled in. As the players where going through the lobby some Sue fan was holding a sign that read “Goofers Suck” and spouting off to the players and coaches. With the entire team behind him, Woog steps up to the clown and tells the kid “I will give you $50 for that sign.” The kid thinks about it for a minute and hands Woog the sign. Woog hands the kid some amount of money and starts walking away. The kid then yells “hey, this isn’t fifty bucks” and Woog yells back “You are a North Dakota fan, I didn’t think they could count to fifty, obviously they don’t know how to spell Gophers correctly, it’s spelled with two F’s.” All the boys on the team start laughing as Woog walks away and the kid just stands there with a stupid look on his face and no sign. Priceless!

Legend. No doubt. This...........it's a tough night for hockey fans, and in particular Gopher fans.

Let us raise our glasses, and salute a great coach, a fine leader, and all around good person. Slainte to Coach Woog.

I probably should listen to the radio during the Mariucci Classic. Normally I'm watching the TV broadcast on my little wearable HUD, but Frank's probably going to reminisce about his late broadcast partner and don't want to miss that.

Still struggling to keep it together over this news. Watching, reading and listening to tributes helps. I posted on FB about it and I was a little moved by the number of UND fans who commented on some great memories of him and had nice things to say. That is saying something for sure.

God damnit.

I crossed paths with Coach one time. My ex, still my close friend (and the reason I pull for the Gophers), was late picking me up. I had been her father’s “ date “ for the game. Wooger came up, rolling a suitcase, looking dapper, I say, “ Hey, you’re Coach Woog!!”! He says, “ Guilty !! “ and stops to chat for five minutes. It takes so little time to create a connection. Coach understood that as well as anyone I’ve met. God rest your soul, Coach.

Doug and Frank were my buddies for lots of Fridays and Saturdays.

I seem to recall a story about Doug's elation at the time of the 2002 NC. Amazingly steadfast to Gopher Hockey

Wonder what kind of tribute the U will do for him? At the very least a DW patch should be worn. I think he deserves an area in Mariucci like Herb Brooks has. Maybe turn one of the showcases in the lobby to a Woog tribute.

It was amazing how well he really got along with his fellow coaches. Blais and Sauer, from his 2 biggest rivals, were great friends. He was always an ambassador for MN hockey and the U. When most people would have been bitter for being let go, he was always a Gopher first guy. A couple of my favorite Woogisms were the Rally bat, and his pileated woodpecker quote.

There has been no better broadcast of College Hockey than Frank and Doug. There has been no coach/player/broadcaster who loved hockey more and loved the Gopher Hockey program more than Doug Woog. No one other than the coaching staff and players were happier that the Gophers won the title than Doug Woog. A title that eluded him for reasons that I'll never know. Probably for the same reasons titles eluded Bud Grant. Just a bizarre quirk in the universe.

I am saddened to see him go. No one instilled my love of the game of hockey more than Doug Woog did. He will be sorely missed. I remembered hearing of his Parkinson's long before it was made public and being devastated by it. No more devastated than I am today.

Wooger was the keynote speaker at the Thursday night team banquet preceding the 2005 MAHA Bantam A State Tournament (in New Ulm) which my oldest son participated in. He told some good ole Dougie stories and made everyone feel welcome. Dougie loved hockey, especially MN Hockey & GOPHERS Hockey. A regular guy & truly a good guy. 👍 He will be missed ☝️ RIP Wooger.

Nice post Scooby. Randy Skarda hit the post late in 1988 I think against Harvard in a tie game. That could have been his National Championship. Wooger was always a proponent of Minnesota kids and Minnesota Hockey.
Some people criticized him for not going out and getting the guy from Slippery Rock or outstate. I always loved the fact that win or lose it was Minnesota kids and you really did have that “Pride on Ice”.

I texted my dad yesterday to tell him the news. Dad said he better call one of his former coworkers who had a son that played with Doug's son growing up. Dad and his friend shared a love of Gopher hockey. He said his friend answered the phone saying my dad's name, then "Wooger!" and broke down in tears.

I mentioned on Twitter how Woog brought a bunch of players to visit me while I was recovering from surgery at the Children's Hospital. I was 7 years old and was just awestruck that Coach Woog took time out of his day and brought some players to the hospital to visit me. I have no idea if this was part of some program that they did back then (like what PJ Fleck does with the football team), chances are that it was. But it didn't matter to me. I was getting to meet guys I'd seen play on TV and gone to a couple games to watch. I felt like the king of the world. Wooger had that rare ability to make everyone feel like they were old friends. Like everything you said mattered to him. Like he cared for everyone he interacted with.

I have no doubt that that interaction went a long way to fueling my diehard Gopher fandom. I'll never forget it.

Rest in peace, Wooger.

One of my friends just sent over a picture of us with Doug on Chestnut St during a frozen four in the mid 2000s. It is hard to overstate how much influence he had on my love of Gopher hockey. I spent a lot of Friday and Saturday nights in my 20’s alone in my apartment watching the games rather than going out with friends because watching it out someplace would be without Doug and Frank. I caught up with them many times at 10:00 - it just became a way of life in the winters. I remember how hard I laughed alone listening to some of their back and forth. The daytime burglar one sticks out. Time passes and things change and that is ok but I will never love a team the way I loved the Gophers hockey teams during those years. I am happy I got to be a fan at that time and it may have never happened had I not gone to a game between the Bulldogs and Gophes when I was in eighth grade and saw one team had a roster of MN born players. Thanks Wooger.

As most everyone on here knows my fandom started in the year of Kessel, so Frank and Doug are the voices that I most associate with Gopher hockey. Now I can recall any Woogism that stood out more than another but I just remember feeling the love of Gopher hockey from Woog during the broadcast. Wooger was a homer through and through. He could convey his love of the sport of hockey but maybe came short of being able to truly articulate that love but he left no doubt. I am jealous of those who were able to share a few moments with him, I only shared a wave in the concourse here in Mankato once. I wish that I could have seen some of the teams that many of you talk about during the 90's, it sounds like it was a fun era to be a fan. I'm glad that Gopher hockey had him as a personality behind the bench and over the airwaves, and I am glad that I was able to be a fan during a short part of it. RIP Wooger
