Buckeyes Dec 6-7

Post by Vegoe » Wed Dec 04 10:58 am

Quick regroup for the Gophers after getting swept by No. 3 North Dakota coming up against Steve Rohlik's No. 7 Ohio State squad. Minnesota has had some really poor first night performances following good weekends. They were waxed by Minnesota-Duluth 5-2 after their sweep of Niagara, Penn State took it to them 8-2 after a good weekend in Michigan, and of course now we had the 9-3 head shaker against the Fighting Hawks after a solid weekend with Wisconsin. The trend of couse after each of those Jekyll and Hyde weekends was the really good two games--so what will we see in Columbus?

Motzko said on his weekly radio show that his team is 0-7-1 against top 10 teams and 5-1-2 against the rest -- 'the problem with a program like ours is we’ve got a steady diet of [top 10 teams]. We've got to stay positive and be firm when I need to be firm.'

Motzko praised the performance of Ben Meyers and singled out Sammy Walker and Blake McLaughlin as two players who need to take a step forward. The coach also reference that his team has to stop taking bad penalties, noting that there a couple guys who have taken way too many of them. He cited the penalty taken in the third period of the CC series where his team had a one goal lead that was erased and then another in the first period of the North Dakota game where he felt like his team was just getting traction.

No Clymer. Isn’t that a silver lining?

Hoping there might be a steam, otherwise it’s Wally and Frank!

This team needs to start generating some wins against better teams. It's on the road, so need a split but secretly hoping for 4-5 points via a tie+.

The Gophers have a better record away than at home this year. Hoping for a Gophers sweep. They actually match up well with Ohio State. Go Gophers!

I think that’s because we are a slow team. The small ice fits them better. Don’t have to chase like they do on the big ice.

Teams not doing well, away game against a Big Ten opponent, not sure what you expect. I don't think this is a game many people are pumped about.

The only thing interesting about OSU is when the players got pissed off on Twitter a few years back.

I'm really looking forward to the game tonight. Need a good road game after the last three weeks. Been a long week at work. Gonna get some Canes, a forty of Colt 45, and snuggle with my Great Dane on the couch. A warmer and more comfortable environment than Mariucci

This will be the first game this season I have not attended in person. It’s a weird feeling but I am looking forward to a good series - we saw two great games there last year so hoping for the same. It would be nice to go into break on a high note so we are a little more pumped for the in state rivals come holiday classic.
I do have to admit it will be nice to be able to relax on the couch, have a beer that cost far less than $11, and not have to hut hut hut up a flight of stairs just to go to the bathroom.

Go Gophers!!
Kick ‘em in the buckeye!

How far the mighty have fallen. Remember when the Big10 was formed? Gophers' fans were grousing about having to play crappy teams like OSU or petulantly bemoaning the addition of Penn State while trying to project when they'll even be relevant.

Well, in the bizarro new world of college hockey, the "elite" programs like Minnesota and Michigan are now sucker-mouthed bottom feeders whilst the likes of Ohio State and the nittaly Lions are taking their candy away. :censored:

So it looks like a subscription is needed to see tomorrow’s game on BTN+ (ie you cannot log in through TV provider?). Looks like $9.99 for a school pass for a month. Hopefully I can pull the nchc trick and get my money back when I cancel immediately after the game. 😆

When this program is finally capable of playing Gopher hockey again, people are going to realize how bad these teams have been since 15-16...

Tough to get new fans excited about the team when you play (for the most part) ugly hockey even if you scrape out some wins. I think we all know what good hockey looks like like we had with those NHL loaded teams from 11-12 - 14-15.

Agreed and I’d argue the wheeler team in 2006 was even better than those squads (minus the goaltending part).

Ya I just meant in more recent times.
07-08 - 10-11: Rough
11-12 - 14-15: Skill
15-16 - Present: Rough

Is the culture within the program's players just totally f***? Strength and conditioning? Skating work? That's 9 years out of 13...

Kloos senior year squad was good but there wasn’t a ton of offensive skill at the blue line which kinda limited their ceiling.

Has this team scored a PP goal all year? I’m sure they have but it doesn’t seem like it.

They were okay but not great. Would be the worst squad against the 11-12 - 14-15 teams.

What I am observing after this first period (a rare watch for me) is that they don't lack speed, stick handling and defensive positioning, but they're lacking that "it" factor to put it all together and gel. That is a skill in and of itself, but they're just a tiny bit off.

I mentioned something similar about Ranta and Snow smartly pointed out he plays with this head down. The guy can control the puck but if he's not looking around to feed it what good does that do?

I am not as down on the future as some others that seem to carry this cloud that this season means next season is also doomed. There is possibility. But the roster def needs to cycle a bit more and I do think Bob can make it happen. Never say die.

I don't think anyone is down about next year, but the probability of being a true contender is lower based on what we've seen through half of this season.

I know that back in November I wrote the the Gophers would be 4-12-2 after these two games against Ohio State, but in last week's game on Saturday against WI, it suddenly came to me that the 2002-3 team which was the second youngest team in the nation had a defining weekend against Colorado College (at the time the #1 team in the nation) in early February, 2003,

The Gophers had come together as a team for the first time since the first game of the season against Ohio State when they lost Grant Potulny for 22 games (not to mention other injuries - Johnny Waibel {broken wrist}, Troy Riddle {separated shoulder], and Barrry Tallackson). And, although Grant had earlier called the team together to announce the "Shock the World" project, the Gophers lost the Friday evening game 6 - 2.

However, on Saturday evening the Gophers came back to win 3-2. And, tDon said on the National Champions Back to Back 2002-2003 DVD, "I don't think there is any question in our minds as coaches that that was the turning point of the season."

I had a similar sense for the team after the Saturday night game and believe that the Gophers can win 2 against Ohio State. And, go on from there . . . .

Go Gophers

That team finished 4th in the country. Not sure a ceiling can get much higher. The problem was that their reward for it was to go play a game in front of 25 people in Detroit, and then go play in front of 50 people in Manchester, New Hampshire. Thankfully at least the first one has been corrected, but when people talk about the attendance issues today, I can't help but think that was such a huge, huge missed opportunity to get people excited about the sport.

But I know people get touchy when we discuss attendance. I'll leave this thread to the back-and-forth with all the OSU hockey fans that stop by here.

FACTS!!

This team gains the zone so often but cannot hold it. Outshooting OSU and possession outside the offensive zone has been very good, but jeez they look lost when on offense.

I mostly agree but you have to remember that Lindgren got hurt late in the year and the blue line depth beyond him and Bischoff wasn’t stellar. Also Schiehorn was closer to average than Wilcox or Robson. The ceiling can definitely be higher than that, it just requires some luck with all the pieces aligning at once. Also there’s a reason they were 4 in the country and not #1

Kloos senior year squad was good but there wasn’t a ton of offensive skill at the blue line which kinda limited their ceiling.

I was third row in the student section when Lindgren got hurt. Icing chase, fell in the circle. When he was sliding into the boards, I swear to God I made eye contact with him. And total look of “f***!!” When I heard the thud, knew it wasn’t good. An almost meaningless game. Last game of the regular season, already locked up the B1G title, probable 1 seed. I remember telling my now fiancé before the game, “Games just for show, hope no one gets hurt.” I should just keep my big mouth shut

It may be just because it's in Columbus which is one of the most boring town I've ever been to.

That team finished 4th in the country. Not sure a ceiling can get much higher. The problem was that their reward for it was to go play a game in front of 25 people in Detroit, and then go play in front of 50 people in Manchester, New Hampshire.
FACTS!!

This team gains the zone so often but cannot hold it. Outshooting OSU and possession outside the offensive zone has been very good, but jeez they look lost when on offense.
Drives me nuts. Cannot sustain zone time ever.

Hey Starman, do you realize the Gophers are 54th out of 60 teams in penalties taken? So the Gophers really don't take a ton of penalties.

Yeah, as much complaining as there has been about Mariucci recently, it's nowhere near as bad. Even if you subtract all the UND fans, the Thanksgivings game was still better attended than this game is.

It is an 18,000+ seat arena so even if they had as many fans as Mariucci does lately it’s gonna look really dead.

That's why total attendance is kind of a joke. I look at "percentage filled" for true attendance bragging rights.

Unless the fans who are there want a dozen or so rows of leg room in front of them, I think it's a lot more than just the arena's capacity.

1. Bodies through gates
2. Paid attendance

18000 arena, 10000 show up. That's a little more than 50% capacity.
In MN that would be 100% capacity.

The latter is more impressive.

OSU averages 5,000 paid attendance...

If they averaged 10,000 it would not be way less impressive than Mariucci just because of a bigger arena... But our revenue would be better.
