The one layup series of the year, however very important to get some continuity before UMD.

Layup series that absolutely must be a sweep though so I would say it's incredibly important to be sharp and focused.

With the Gophers the past few years, there is no layup series. Hope to see both goalies, and Jaxson Nelson in a game. Need to get up on them early, and really take control of the games. Also need to figure out who will be the best winger with Walker and McLaughlin.

The last few seasons we haven’t had a layup, this years team is talented enough to sleepwalk through this weekend and get the sweep, I think.

2nd weekend of the season I wouldn't say any win is for sure. Especially with as many newcomers as we have this year.

Stenlund's stat sheet from last year makes him look like a good forward. Freshmen last year scored at a ppg pace and netted 20 some goals. From the looks of it Niagara has a lot of sophomores and juniors so it's probably not a stretch to assume they will be improved over last year.

I had the thought watching the games this weekend...this team, while younger and inexperienced, seems more talented than last years squad. The passes seemed to connect more, the plays seemed to materialize in front of the net more. While Sheehy, Gates, and the rest of the seniors provided solid leadership, I don't think we lost much skill that wasn't replaced in spades with this new class. At times, it seemed like the Lucia lame duck seniors just kinda drifted.

Ya idk where this comes from. Yes we SHOULD sweep. But layup? Hope the players don't have that attitude.

I don’t think they have anyone as good as Pitlick (last year) up front...but aside from Rem, the real difference (this year) is Johnson & Lacombe on D, the transition game (from the D) wasn’t good last year, it’s noticeably better now.

This would be a nice step for them to dominate this weekend. Its so early. I hate to put pressure on them like failure now is important. Big games are coming, the small ones matter, but don't start with this must win stuff. Just go after it and the rest will happen.

We lost a bunch of talent at forward but hopefully what we gained in Dmen offsets a good portion of that loss, not to mention some progress from the sophomore forwards. And it’ll depend if Moe or maybe LaFontaine can be as good as Robson.

I think it will be a lot of splits, until mid-season, when the team will (hopefully) gel. Might see a late-season surge. Next year, if that gel happens, look the eff out. Dangerous team, very dangerous.

If the parity in college hockey has shown anyone anything over the last 10 years, it’s that there are no layups or easy games.
"Hard work will beat talent, if talent doesn't work hard"
Doug Woog - 1990

This quote was written on the chalkboard in a lockeroom in the old Ralph Engelstad arena my Squirt team used the day after the Gophers used it and came into the game ranked #1 in the nation and lost 6-1 to a second rate Whioux team.

Overhead on SiouxSports.com - Why does every thread always turn into a "Gopher" thread? Is there a secret infatuation with them?

One could make the argument that we have been the layup vs. other MN teams the last decade

Exactly... Bemidji State tied SCSU twice and UMass-Lowell split with UMD. If a team comes into a game unprepared, anyone in college hockey can win.

Niagara is going to be neck and neck with AIC this year.

The Purple Eagles had the top freshman in Atlantic Hockey, Ludwig Stenlund, and their coach finally has a roster of guys he's recruited. There were some tough moves when he took over the job and cut eight players off the roster.

I like the talent, but there is a long way to go. There will be setbacks, but there are some players in this bunch. I really liked the mobility Lacombe showed last weekend. I found the comeback in the third Saturday very encouraging.

I will really :good2: be sold if they can have a solid performance at Penn State this year and at least come out with a split. Hopefully it will be different from last year. They really need to get a sweep this weekend at Home against Niagara. A series like this can really hurt pairwise at the end of the season if they don't.

One local on the Niagara roster. Former Hill-Murray player Dylan Mills (Not to be confused with former Gopher Dylan Mills).

We had the new voice of Gopher Hockey, Charlie Beattie, on the Podcast tonight. Charlie was a great guest! Looks like FSN made the right choice! So be nice to him until he gets his feet wet a little bit!

Based on some early results involving Atlantic Hockey teams there's certainly no reason to be overconfident about the Gophers' opponent this weekend. Looking forward to seeing two competitive games with the Gophers coming out on top, hopefully a sweep.

I’ve always had to log in with my tv provider on fox sports go. So doubtful you can watch without that channel being available from your provider.

Yes but at least they’re at the right end of the ice creating chances unlike last years fourth line. (The previous fourth line got some chances but they were more of a liability overall, hopefully that’s not the case going forward)

Re: Niagara (Oct. 18/19)

I was told if they sold beer and lowered ticket prices the attendance would go up. I dont see many people in the cheap section or well...anywhere. So what is the excuse now?

(the answer is of course most Gopher fans care more about who they play than the team itself)

Where's the offense? Half this team turns over the puck like Fiala.

Yep, these were the only problems that people cited

Also if a beer seriously costs $10.50 then that might be part of the problem on that front.

So now the issue is the price of the beer? That was not said before. People said they stay home because they can't have beer. What is the price point? 25 cents?

Great to pull out a win, what a nice OT goal! I like how this team rallies when behind. Hoping we can pull this energy into tomorrow.

You can get tix as low as $20 yet for tomorrow, and if you know a season ticket holder they can get discounted tickets ($15-$25). Get your butts in the seats people! It’s Gopher Hockey! Who gives a rats ass who they are playing. Come have an overpriced beverage and help cheer us on to an early season waving of floor cleaning paraphernalia by Goldy!

Go Gophers!! :M: :M2:

I watched the first, half of the second and all of the third. There is a different feel to this team. You don’t get the impression they can’t do things, mentally and physically. They are inexperienced and you see a lot of those type of mistakes. A lot. When they collapse, it’s epic. But then they go on a nice run like they did early in the 3rd and it’s fun to watch. I don’t recall a lot of that last year.

And yes, Sammy Walker is definitely on a different level than anyone else out there. The burst of speed on the game winning goal reminded me of the speed we had many years ago.

It wasn’t pretty, but they got the job done. Build a little bit more each game and we will be fine.

Sitting at the game you could see that there was zero chemistry on any lines. It was like they never skated together. Walker tried to do everything on his own tonight, and finally it worked in OT. Nelson had a couple of good hits. Burke still seems a bit off since his injury last year. A win is a win, and I hope they come out and blow them out on Saturday.

On a side note-- Game ops was lacking. Lacking an in arena host showed tonight. Maybe it was because of the game flow, but not a lot out of the student section tonight.

I too was surprised by the low attendance. I didn't expect it to be a sellout, but thought there would have been more people than that for the home opener. On the upside, there was plenty of room to put my feet up.

Granted our first two goals came late in the game, I expected the game to extend further into overtime and was pleasantly surprised that Walker scored so quickly. Niagara seemed to be doing such a great job getting into passing lanes all evening and that 2-on-1 with Burke came out of nowhere.

While I agree Walker tried to do a lot, it looked like his line mates were content with just giving him the puck and letting him skate. Especially on break ins to the offensive zone. They waited to give him the puck and let him take 2 defenders at once. Need to start working together.

I’m a bit worried about Brodzinski. He looks slow and not up with the play at all. He had a few mishandles of the puck in the second that were turned over right away. He needs to be less timid and let that shot fly.
