Reading this made me wonder, exactly what steps can be taken to "create a conference that dominates hockey"?

Initially, when the new locker room was just completed I know that photos were not allowed. Apparently now it's no problem at all....not sure when this was liberalized.

That idea already jumped the shark. The time to take over was at inception of the conference. Instead they just all stayed lazy and fat while they collected their Big Ten Network checks and the NCHC worked their butts off and took over.

When tDon left I believe. Lucia also made the opposing coaches walk to the bench on the ice instead of allowing them to enter their bench from behind because he did not want other teams back there. tBob is a bit less hung up on stuff like that.

You can blame all of that on a paranoid Don Lucia.

The theater/video room has 27 seats, but the Gopher roster has had 28 players multiple times recently. Do they never all go in at one time?

Actually, I think there might only be 27 stalls in the new locker room, too? This seems so odd to me from a project planning perspective...

Sounds like ST prices for next season will come out tomorrow, with reductions in scholarship fees. Predictions?
Mine:
Zone 4: Remains at 500 total
Zone 3: Down 100 to 600 total (10% chance of lowering to 550)
Zone 2: Down 100 to 800 total (10% chance of lowering to 750)
Zone 1: Down 100 to 900 total (I don't expect a further drop since these are mostly selling still)
Club Room: No change (I hope to be surprised)

I dont think dropping the price $100 ($5 a game) will do much, but its better than nothing. If they lose more STHs next season I would expect another $100 drop the following season

If it doesn't then ticket prices aren't the real reason. For a majority of the arena now tickets are now cheaper than they have been in almost 20 years.

My zone 1 tickets dropped by $200/each. I'm pumped. I was on the fence about renewing (versus finding someone to split with or reducing number of seats). Now I think I'll probably keep thing as they are. I appreciate the University making this change.

Tickets prices would still be a reason.

The consumer pays based on the perceived value they each receive from the product. The sad fact is, most consumers value Big Ten hockey lower than the WCHA. If you set the prices to 100 dollars for everyone, you would not lose STH. In that way price is a factor, but from a financials perspective the school can't go too low.

In the end this is a positive step and that's all we can ask. Small steps at a time.

See what Mankato and St Cloud charge and match it. You can make a good argument that prices should be even lower than them with all the entertainment options here

It must be a hit because I just tried to get on the renewal site and it is overloaded. My tix ave price based on 21 games is under $30 including the seat fee. Like you said, they are heading in the right direction.

What are the odds we see the same Mariucci Classic format next year? I think it's on the doubtful side, because the Gophers, UMD, and MNSU play in the Ice Breaker. Maybe Bemidji will come down for New Years with promise of a return trip up there the next fall. Maybe SCSU goes with a home and home in October. The schedule is really a mystery at the moment.

All we truly know is that CC will be here for a weekend.... There are some other things in the hopper, but that info is not for consumption yet.

According to this article back in the fall: http://www.startribune.com/scheduling-is-a-balancing-act-for-gophers-coach-bob-motzko/558837362/

CC will be one of the teams in the Mariucci Classic in the 2020-21 season, according to Motzko.

Also:
North Dakota: The Gophers and Fighting Hawks begin a four-year contract this season, with two series in Minneapolis and two in Grand Forks. “I know that’s a big one for our fans,’’ Motzko said.

Minnesota Duluth: The Gophers and Bulldogs have a contract to play a home-and-home series four times in a five-year span. The contract started in the 2018-19 season and lasts through 2022-23. In addition, the Gophers will play at UMD in the Icebreaker tournament in the 2020-21 season.

Minnesota’s other Division I schools: “Bemidji wants in, St. Cloud wants in, Mankato wants in, and we want to reciprocate,’’ Motzko said. As for putting together another All-Minnesota Mariucci Classic, Motzko said that can’t be accomplished every year, but the Gophers do have St. Cloud State lined up for the tournament in the future, possibly in 2020-21.

Boston University: Motzko said he received a call from Terriers coach Albie O’Connell, who wants his team to play Minnesota during the 2020-21 season in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of BU’s 1971 NCAA championship victory over the Gophers. “We’re going to look at it,’’ Motzko said.

So a pair at North Dakota, the ice breaker at UMD, CC and maybe St Cloud in the Mariucci Classic and maybe a home series vs BU??

I thought the athletic department was pretty transparet that this year's classic was a one-time, maybe again some time, thing? I loved it, but the attendance didn't seem to spike dramatically for the all MN event. I thought opposing fans may make the trip, but there weren't as many as expected.

Separately, the new ticket prices are nice for us. With drops 2 years in a row this will be the least we pay for tickets in years...

Attendance early was suspect though for all Gopher games. If the program continues to show improvement it could subsequently draw in casual fans of other programs more interested in seeing a competitive game against a quality opponent.

Unless the team takes a nosedive I expect actual butts in seats next year to be demonstratively improved.

I just figured MSU and SCSU fans would make the trip to the city for what has been a near guranteed win against the "big" school these past few years. I was surprised we didn't have more of an opponent fanbase. SCSU was having a down year, but MSU seemed ripe for a great weekend heading in.

I like money and a few hundred bucks just got moved from the ticket budget to the whatever you want budget
The Gophers just essentially gave season ticket holders the free beer some of you were asking for.

Yeah. I mean they cant just cut them $350 across the board that would be a disaster. Lower it in increments and that combined with better team play should help them find the happy medium.
GG13 can burn in hell! #neverforget

The entire above post is an opinion. If you disagree with me, that is aok by me :) :dup:

My zone 1 tickets dropped by $200/each. I'm pumped. I was on the fence about renewing (versus finding someone to split with or reducing number of seats). Now I think I'll probably keep thing as they are. I appreciate the University making this change.
Same - just renewed what I've had in Section 19. :good2:

They'll probably just finalize those details and offer it up later, tweaking based on what they learn with this postseason.

If the prices are set by the B1G they may not allow a pre-purchase or know what price to charge and then want to deal with refunds or offsets.

They work with the conference to set them. They just haven't done it yet in all likelihood. They defer the charging of the card already this year so it's not like that process has to change.

Add that to a solid BIG schedule and there is NOTHING wrong with that...I like the idea of games vs someone in the east each year....

Our schedules hold up to anyone's...

I get that technically they are STH, but most of those empty seats in the middle are corporate seats. Those are notoriously bad for loyalty.
They WERE solid ticket lifers, but with the seat license years ago, many (most) of those folks either moved to cheaper sections or just stopped buying ST. The U then made a huge push to sell those seats to corpies. Some sold, when you could deduct from taxes, but it didn’t take many years before those seats sat empty. Example: my husbands firm had four seats, eventually they couldn’t find clients who wanted to go, then they couldn’t even find employees who wanted them. They dropped them two years ago and we see them still empty most games so the U never got them resold, nor are people buying them for just one game. We’re happy the price has dropped for us, truth is we’d still buy ST, but a savings is nice. A winning team on the ice will help, I think it’s looking positive.
If liars pants did catch on fire, watching the news would be so much more fun!

I believe we heard in recent years (with statistics) that corporate ticket holders are not THAT big of a share anymore and this excuse isn't as valid.

The ticket prices will help, but perhaps even more important than that is getting butts in seats for tickets already sold. A more competitive team (and what again looks like a strong NC schedule) should solve for that. If a few BT teams can make noise in the tournament that might also pique the interest of more casual fans.
Currently under construction.

I’d estimate from looking, there is still an outside shot this team could get losing in the B10 championship depending how many bid stealers there are. Have to sweep ND tho. Get back on track. We match up really well with ND

Leivermann will get at least one next weekend. Other than that, they just don't impress me.

Fourth-seeded Minnesota will open the series against fifth-seeded Notre Dame with Game One on Friday, March 6 (TV: FOX Sports 2) followed by Game Two on Saturday, March 7 (TV: FOX Sports North). If necessary, Game Three will be played on Sunday, March 8 (TV: FOX Sports 2).
Wonder if they meant FSN+? Saturdays game will be an afternoon game if they really mean FSN.

Per my DirecTV guide-- Friday-- 7pm FSN has T wolves at 7pm, FSN+ has SCSU vs Duluth, FS2 has soccer till 8PM, then some PBC stuff
Saturday--FSN has Loons soccer at 7pm, FSN+ has TBA, FS2 has women's hoops
Sunday-- FSN has various stuff till 7:30 pm Wild pregame, FSN+ has TBA, FS2 has some repeat boxing on during the day, and ARCA racing at night
BTN is full of various stuff, mostly hoops, so they are out of the TV deal

I, for one, am actually kinda happy MN is not playing WI.....they've found their game the last few weekends. Dangerous team loaded with talent & playing with nothing to lose.

College hockey is a random outcome sport & the B1G playoffs will be no different. This past weekend saw no B1G home team win in regulation or 5X5 OT. That could easily happen again - it'll be no surprise if all the road teams win their respective series next weekend. This league is so balanced.

MN has played better-than-average hockey the last two weekends and should have won at least one of the four games. But, as Bill Murray said in Meatballs, it just doesn't matter. They still have a decent opportunity to play deep into March.

Through the tough slog of the last two weekends, LaFontaine has given them a chance. The kid D are playing with confidence & the younger forwards have been better in their 200 ft games. I'll say Johnson, LaCombe, Reedy & Nelson have been notable of late - each could be difference makers in a short series.

I'll set myself up for ridicule.....I like WI over OSU (straight sets), MSU over MI (Lethemon steals the series) and MN over ND in 3 (two OT games).

I think it's awesome that this team has grown and are in the position they are in regardless of how this season ends. They were an absolute train wreck early on. You are spot on about Johnson and LaCombe. Both are going to be potential All-Americans if they stick around.

One of the keys to this squad right now is getting the McManus, Ranta, Myers line producing nth again. When they were clicking it seemed to propel the team and I think take some pressure off elsewhere.

For whatever reason Ranta has gone back to the “skate it till you lose it” theme that he had prior to his success streak that he had a bit ago.

His line mates have to be a bit frustrated as he has a bit of an odd style to play with. Skating in circles around the zone and skating himself out of space is hurting their line right now. I think I recall Bob saying that his line mates know that once they give him the puck that they likely won’t get it back....

Clymer isn’t wrong in that when Ranta pushes had to the net is when he really becomes hard to handle. I’m hopeful that he gets that going again as he was fun to watch when he powered to the net.

Really excited with Johnson and lacombe as folks stated. They can really skate!

Fourth-seeded Minnesota will open the series against fifth-seeded Notre Dame with Game One on Friday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m. CT (TV: FOX Sports 2) followed by Game Two on Saturday, March 7 at 7:00 p.m. CT (TV: FOX Sports North PLUS). If necessary, Game Three will be played on Sunday, March 8 at 6:00 p.m. CT (TV: FOX Sports 2).
What is Fox Sports 2? Is that streaming?

Going to the games of course solves the problem of viewing, but we try to record games when possible to go back and watch the things we missed in real time.

Years ago it was Fuel TV, but now it is an off shoot of FS1. On DirecTV it is channel 618, and 149 on Dish. I get it on DTV, but not sure if you need some sort of sports package to get it on other platforms. Shows a ton of soccer, hoops, boxing and crashed ice.

Oh yeah, was it the year before with Letteri on the team that the gophers blew a 2-0 lead that started with a bad line change? :x
Yup. IIRC all 5 went to change and their goalie whipped a pass into our zone.

Lettieri was the only one on that team?

I have no idea what that means, but if you're asking me about the reference, it's because I remember him wearing a cape that game trying to save the Gophers' season. We okay? :)

You know, despite laying some eggs in the last few weeks I am very happy to see some progress from this team and the program under Bob. Everyone knows what this team needs and it really comes down to calming the peaks and valleys of each phase of the game. Obviously the PP is the biggest disappointment this season but hopefully our young d-men will grow into the QB's we need.

Back to my point, who would have thought before the Mariucci Classic that this team would have finished up 20 spots in the PWR? If you did think that you best go buy a lottery ticket today. I don't think this team has a playoff run in them but I do think they have a chance to make the NCAA's. They will need help but they can help themselves by not playing like they did for long stretches on Saturday night.

I'm ready for some playoff hockey! Go Gophers!

Apologies if this has been asked since the Michigan dumpster fire. I tried a quick scan. So pretty much going to have to make the B1G title game if they're relying on PWR to get in? Obviously if they lose this weekend they're dust....winning and losing next week would be a KO punch essentially?

It's really hard to say at this point. If they don't win the series this weekend, it's over, that's certain (they're 16th right now, and we know an AHA team will take that seed).

A sweep this weekend then losing to PSU puts them in really dangerous territory, but that all depends on what the other teams do. Win this weekend (either sweep or 2 of 3) then beat PSU, I'd GUESS that they're in, regardless of the B1G championship game outcome, but it's just too hard to know, and it isn't all up to what they do (absent winning the B1G tournament, of course).
