So almost two recruiting cycles amidst coaching changes for 3 of the traditional powers? Lol

Conferences changed, the sport has changed, people's viewing habits/going to games have changed and none of it for the better. To be honest, I am not excited that I have tickets to six games in the next fourteen days even with the fact the four of the six games are against the storied rivals.

It’d be nice if the athletic department worked with MN United (or some other pro org that does well in this area) to figure out how to increase fan engagement and make attending a game more fun. You can kinda get away with being lazy about that stuff when the team is a perennial power and you’ve had the same fan base for decades but obviously things have changed and a lot of those fans aren’t coming back. Beer is a small step in the right direction and can’t really hurt but obviously it was never going to fix the bigger overarching problem by itself.

A big part of playing the rivals for me is wanting to beat their top players. I doubt I will develop animosity towards Caulfield when he is likely to play four to six games against the Gophers in his life. There is no I want to beat Jason Blake or Zach Parise or whomever else. Once that is gone, it is just a bunch of red and green jerseys out there.

Huh, I hate them because I hate the programs and fans... Hating specific players is just a bonus.

I see a red or green jersey and I say f that guy.

I don’t think fans return until they get above #10 or higher in national rankings. Fickle I know, how strange to want to have a winning hockey program in Minnesota. I don’t believe the talk about how football is now king and thats why hockey sucks. The team hasn’t found its identity yet. You see individual effort and hardly any plays and passes that are anticipatory, like they knew their guy would be there.

If Gopher hockey needed to start building a new arena today I wonder how many seats would be in it?

Given the 4 - 6 - 2 record thus far, I'm thinking that with the schedule remaining before the Mariucci Classic and the continued improvement of all of the teams (including the Gophers) in that run, then the Gophers will probably be 4 - 12 - 2 going into the Classic . . . .

Prove me wrong, Gophers!

There should be no excuses from all the whiners about not playing the teams from the old WCHA the next 6 home games. The Gophers 2 biggest rivals will be in the building the next 2 weeks, and then 3 in state schools will be in the building for the Mariucci Classic. So for those who fawn over first round picks, and good hard nosed hockey, every one of those seats should be filled. Just need to add Denver and Brink, and boy, there would be lines all the way to Sally's to get in. But, I'm sure the excuses will be plentiful to explain why they didn't show up.

Really enjoying the progress of players like Nelson and Perbix the past several weeks; both bring a combo of size and skill that MN badly needed.

It is easy to see the potential of LeCombe & Johnson but Staudacher may be the steadiest freshman defenseman right now.

Nelson could break out in the second half, but I'd like to see him get a little edge to his play.

The whole team could use some edge to their play. They’re the biggest team in college hockey and do not play like it.

Yeah I was hoping the addition of two puck movers would help the possession game at least but that’s gotten even worse and it wasn’t great last year.

Thanks for the link. Love to see his passion for the U. Hopefully his passion (and that of others like Mike Carmen) will rub off on more former players and get inspire them to be more involved.

Also this team is lacking in Skippers and that needs to be rectified!!

I think Vegoe just said he likes a good steak and is willing to pay more for it and Gopher hockey is similar? Right now, the product on the ice is not a high quality steak... I don't understand the comparison.

I like the fact that Minnesota has elite talent on their roster most years. Ryan Johnson and Jackson LaCombe are going to be fun to watch. They're just scratching the surface. If Sampo Ranta keeps playing the way he's shown he can play, then look out. I bet he has a big WJC for Finland if he takes the puck to the net like he has lately. Sammy Walker is one of the most electric players in college hockey on the rush... he just has to figure out how to find that game again.

This weekend the BADgers bring to town four first round talents Caulfield, Turcott, Miller and Holloway. That's a premium game on the schedule against a team that should bring some fans to the building.

You can get two tickets with a decent view to the Wild against Colorado, who has multiple of the best players in the WORLD, for under 40 bucks each.

Wild are 31st in the NHL. Their prospects seem to be all bottom six guys so far. Not sure how much fun it's going to be to watch them develop.

College hockey is different to me and it's why I follow this niche sport. NHL is a great product, but just something different about college hockey to me.

Good talk.

It's different for me, too. I dropped season tickets last summer but couldn't stay away and picked them back up after the season started. I'm paying WAY too much money on average for each game relative to what the market demands. But I do it because I only really care about Gopher hockey.

Sadly I have seen the program get to this very unhealthy state right before my eyes weekend after weekend over years. It is DEPRESSING as a STH to show up to empty arenas. So it's not just a bummer for the players. They need to get bodies in the arena. It's a very risky move to keep zones 2-4 at the same price because you assume those are your loyal customers that are just gonna stay. If they don't lower prices again next summer you will see another net decrease in STH base.

Couldn't agree more. I've lost interest in NHL hockey, at least until the playoffs...and then only if the Wild makes it.

I don't watch the NHL, either. But when I get an invite for a free game for whatever reason and I go, my God the skill is incredible in real life.

It's funny though....I'm not sure it gets brought up unless it's prompted. In this case it was an article. Last week it was a guest on the GPL podcast. I see it happen on Twitter. It got brought up last year by the pictures from the playoff game. There is a problem. Ignoring one of the big problems in the minds of the consumer is only going to make it worse. I'm not suggesting that the administration is doing that, but telling people to "shut up and go away" is only going to harden people and makes turning it around more difficult.

I fully admit the sell job that Motzko and the athletic department is a very difficult one, but it's a perception problem they need to deal with. Again, I say it's just bizarre that the sentiment is to tell the consumer that they should just like what their being given. It's not done for any other product....and I'll repeat, the team the Gophers are playing IS part of the product to a lot of people. If it weren't, the exhibition game against the U-18 and the Niagara game and the North Dakota game would have the exact same demand with the exact same ticket price. They aren't, which signals to me that pretty much everyone considers the opposing team to be a very important part of the product.
Exactly, Mankato sees this same fluctuation with ticket prices and attendance based on the opponent as well. Regular WCHA opponent ticket prices are $18 a pop and attendance hovers around 3500-4000. This season when ASU and North Dakota were in town prices were $25 or more and attendance was 4500-5000. So the university is keenly aware of how the fans covet games vs. "better" opponents and they grab whatever $$$$ they can from those games and higher attendance.

Good talk.
I think for most of us the 2nd sentence is true but it's probably not true for the masses. The U needs to figure out how to create a better in game experience (and obviously improve what we see on the ice) if they're going to find new fans to replace the disgruntled ones who stopped caring (for the bevy of reasons we've talked about a million times over). Obviously I know that attendance =/= sales and there's just a lot of no shows so that's another thing they ideally need to figure out, especially if it's impacting recruiting at all (no idea if this is the case or not).
<GophDogFan> yep, so sad... you have a new moment, when your uncle gets mad because you got the best of him. the last straw was when i told him that UND's hockey program is like crystal pepsi: Nobody every liked it.

I used to be a die-hard fan of both the Gophers and college hockey in general, but unfortunately the U priced me out several years ago. I don't think I would call myself "disgruntled", but apathy has definitely set in. When I stopped going to games, it became "Out of sight, out of mind", and I eventually just moved on to other things. I can't remember the last time I even watched a game on TV.

In the business world, it's always said that it's easier to keep an existing customer than it is to find new ones. The Athletic Department would have been wise to follow that philosophy. I would guess they have lost thousands of long time fans over the last 10 years because of their idiotic decisions. In my case, they probably lost the next generation of fans also, because when I don't go, my kids don't go. I think Slap Shot mentioned the "downstream" effect, and this is a perfect example of this. The short-term cash grab will cause long-term damage to the program.

And the kids graduating college now had the Wild their whole life. So ya, replacing the lost fans is going to be insanely difficult. The lever you have is price.

Yes , there are some seats for $70-$75 , but most seats available are in the $55 range with some still at $35 in the corners.

The “U” just doesn't get it. What they need are people who have successfully run private businesses to show them how to do it. That there is no magic money tree.

Stub hub has tickets for as low as 25$. (I admittedly don’t know how much extra fees are).
Scalpers will also be readily available and I’m sure you can get something for less than 75$.

There are ways to get to a game for a decent price if you are willing to put in the effort.

I think that the fact that the "cheap seats" seem to have less empty seats shows that the higher priced seats need to have their price lowered.

I mentioned this in chat, and attendance tonight was around 3K (actual). Many eastern schools would kill for that. UND/MN/WI are indeed spoiled in that aspect.

Now, that doesn't make it right to jack prices and assume we're just going to show up (which is currently the case). 10K won't happen anymore. Even if we're winning, I don't think that will ever be the case. Price, viewing options, outside costs (parking, food, drink)...it will never be like the old days. I f*ing hate saying it, but it won't.

Expect 5K at best, like every other major college team in the nation, and probably get 2-3K like most of the other semi-major college hockey teams in the nation.

What? There were like 8K bodies in the arena last year on Saturday against uw.

Attendance was way higher than 3000. It was a late arriving crowd, as usual. Certainly nowhere near full, but solidly over 50%

It's real. I was at BWW last weekend and one of the managers was talking about this turkey that was roaming around the area. She even said one of her employees was trapped in her car because it was on attack mode :D

Very real. I saw a turkey strutting around by Williams a few weeks ago.

To be a contender like we thought next year, this team would have to be taking a step. More than likely after at least a tournament appearance this year.

It's clear it would now take multiple steps to contend next year and I just don't see that being feasible based on everything we're seeing and no star players coming in to put it over the top.

Assistants will be the first to go. At this rate I'd be shocked if both are on the bench next year. Raboin will have a longer leash.

I guess it's college so they'll probably both get all of next year at least too. Whoever is running the PP what in God's name.

Ya it didn't make any sense. Basically both will probably get to the end of next year even if they don't deserve it, as the fanbase suffers for it.

Bob runs the pp... he runs a bunch of groups in practice. I think he's cautious of putting too much on the plates of the freshman. He's got experience doing that in the past and having it delay development if it doesn't work. This is looking like a long journey back right now.

They've lowered the ticket prices. For games nobody cares about. For the BADgers and Effing Hawks, they cranked the price up.

They may not have lowered them as much as you'd like, but they did lower them. Last night like all Thursday and Sunday games did not do that great.

Tonight's game will be close to sold out.

That said... rough game last night.

They didn’t lower for everyone. Yes, yes, before people pile on and yell that I could have moved to cheap seats, I’m just saying the prices for the seats we’ve had for 25 years didn’t go down. Was it positive that they reduced some? Yes. I’m glad they did, but they may need to do more

Re: 2019-2020 Gopher Hockey Season Thread

I sit on the east end and it was almost all green. I’d be more than willing to bet the increased ticket sales tonight will be mostly whioux fans. It was uncomfortable to be in our own home arena last night - that should never happen.
Sadly, I think it will be worse tonight.

I hope the Gophers answer back tonight, but you’ve heard in several interviews how much they respond to having a loud crowd and student section. The AD helped to make sure we wouldn’t have that, so it’s somewhat understandable that the team struggles to find some energy when they are practically playing for an away crowd.

It’s an unfortunate perfect storm that is happening this weekend. And I’m not referring to the weather (although you know that will keep more of the fair weather fans (pun intended) away.)

Hopefully a few of the students in town for the football game tomorrow will wander over tonight. We should have an alumni band tonight. The weekend would be almost salvaged if we could send the invaders home with a bitter taste in their mouths.

GO GOPHERS! :M: :M2:

I'm not sure I've ever seen a Gopher team outclassed like they were against PSU and again yesterday against NoDak.

People who are smarter hockey people than I am - what gives?
Lucia was a very lazy recruiter.
