Why could the hockey game not be played Sunday?
Maybe the UND team didn't want to be here the entire Thanksgiving weekend?

I think Thanksgiving night is a great idea. When I was a kid, we always went bowling that night because there was nothing else to do. Attendance should be good I would think.
"Hard work will beat talent, if talent doesn't work hard"
Doug Woog - 1990

This quote was written on the chalkboard in a lockeroom in the old Ralph Engelstad arena my Squirt team used the day after the Gophers used it and came into the game ranked #1 in the nation and lost 6-1 to a second rate Whioux team.

Overhead on SiouxSports.com - Why does every thread always turn into a "Gopher" thread? Is there a secret infatuation with them?

Cause everyone and their mother would biotch about a Friday-Sunday series ;)

Honestly best to keep it consecutive days.
I know scheduling is tricky but is there anyway they could have avoided putting the biggest series of the year on Thanksgiving weekend?

Probably not. Its a non-conference game and both teams have stacked schedules.

It’s still a pretty big rivalry, and with our already crappy attendance it will probably be a green and white crowd much like the last time they were in town. Not having students for this series is a big mistake. You don’t schedule your most hated rival, who travel extremely well, on a weekend/holiday when attendance by the home crowd is sure to be down - it shouldn’t feel like an away game in your own arena. Not smart planning imho.

Yeah that problem would happen anyways. Half the games the student attendance is mediocre and the rest of the fans have been dressed up as empty seats for years. If the fans are really that concerned about the Whioux fans taking up all the tickets they had the chance to buy them and chose not to so my sympathy for them is minimal at best.

And again the AD only has so much power in this situation. It isnt like they woke up this morning and said "Hey the schedule is about to come out...when should we put the UND series? How about Thanksgiving!" More than likely this was the only weekend both teams could make work for sure and with the football game on Saturday it limited what could be done. I doubt UND wanted to waste all of their break down here waiting around...

Here is a brilliant idea. Goldy's at Mariucci should have a special sale that night for fans in attendance.

Fill Goldy's with North Dakota State gear. That will get them fired up

We are a rare breed nowadays apparently. When I heard about a Thanksgiving Game I thought the family was SOL for dinner cause I’m going to the game.

I’ll accept the title of line-combo guru but seeing as the roster is set we can start to speculate a little bit:

Burke-Walker-McLaughlin
Ranta-Brodzinski-Perbix
Meyers-Reedy-McManus
Wait-Weber-Nelson

Brinkman-Nanne
Zuhlsdorf-Lacombe
Rossini-Johnson

Lafontaine
Moe
Close

On paper projects to be a middle of the pack Big Ten team. Prove me wrong Bob!

Although I voiced my displeasure with playing the game on Thanksgiving, my wife and I will be there as normal. We host Thanksgiving, but it looks like it will be moved to a different weekend now. :(

I wonder what time the Thanksgiving game would be played. We've on occasion had our Thanksgiving start time at 1 PM instead of a typical 4 which depending upon the start time would be quite manageable. Think outside the box folks!

I hope Sorenson can beat out Wait. I’m sure we’ll see plenty of both.

Special teams and goaltending are biggest question marks. Which is a little scary.

I like what I’ve heard from Sorenson but the guys only played one year of NAHL. Wait played three in USHL plus some experience last year. Of course none of that matters if Sorenson is a better player.

Those two things were the only reason we were competitive last year so that is a valid concern.
<GophDogFan> yep, so sad... you have a new moment, when your uncle gets mad because you got the best of him. the last straw was when i told him that UND's hockey program is like crystal pepsi: Nobody every liked it.

I say over 20 wins, a tough schedule, but I think they will be much better this year.

“Three ticket packages are available: Gold, Maroon, and Individual Sports.
Gold Package - $260 (1 football ticket, 1 men's basketball ticket, and 1 men's hockey ticket)
Maroon Package - $175 (1 football ticket and 1 men's basketball or 1 men's hockey ticket)
Individual Sports - $99 each (1 football ticket, 1 men's basketball ticket, or 1 men's hockey ticket)
Please note that one men's hockey ticket includes admission to both nights of the series.”

99$ for the entire hockey season? There’s no excuse not to fill the student section. I don’t think we got deals like that 20 years ago!

When I was at the U in the late 80s, Student tickets for hockey and basketball were $4 per game.

I paid $174 in 1999 for just hockey. Good lord those deals are sick!

I need to get me a U card ;)
Yea, but we paid like $50 for football. My fresman year we got two football tickets per game for $36, that's $18 per season ticket. There were 6 games at the time. The next year I think it was $36 a piece and they did away with the buy one get one. So we kind of had the same package, albeit 20+ years ago.

Anyway, $175 to go to 2 of 3 sports is pretty sweet if you can swing it.

99$ for the entire hockey season? There’s no excuse not to fill the student section. I don’t think we got deals like that 20 years ago!
I think that's $99 per night. But, $200 for a season is still pretty great
That changed... "Please note that one men's hockey ticket includes admission to both nights of the series.”
This doesn't make sense. Who is going to pay $100 for a single football or basketball ticket? Or even 2 hockey tickets, (unless it is a rival)?

The maroon package MIGHT work if I can get tickets to football against BADgers SUCK and hockey against UND.

Screw basketball.

It’s a “single” season ticket - all the games.

At least that’s how I understand it.

As Cowgirl mentioned, that's for a Season ticket:
https://gophersports.com/news/2019/6/6/ ... e-now.aspx

The $99 is for a full season ticket for hockey. The last few years, it was $99 for a Friday season ticket, and another $99 for the Saturdays.

Why could the hockey game not be played Sunday?

FTR, they don't travel well.
They just live here. Because nobody wants to live in ND.

They are the best traveling team in the nation. Because no one that lives in ND wants to be there all year.
Lead us out of Loserville, Bob.
104 big four seasons with no finals appearance
Times advanced in playoffs last 15 seasons: Vikings 3, Wild 2, Twins 0, Wolves 0
1967 last football conference title, 1982 last basketball conference title, 2003 last hockey national championship

First, living in North Dakota isn't bad, but living in Grand Forks is as bad as one might imagine. Second, they do travel well and even if Vegas isn't a hard sell, it was to Gopher fans. I hate admitting anything good about that fanbase,
"Hard work will beat talent, if talent doesn't work hard"
Doug Woog - 1990

This quote was written on the chalkboard in a lockeroom in the old Ralph Engelstad arena my Squirt team used the day after the Gophers used it and came into the game ranked #1 in the nation and lost 6-1 to a second rate Whioux team.

Overhead on SiouxSports.com - Why does every thread always turn into a "Gopher" thread? Is there a secret infatuation with them?

To be fair though, Gopher fans weren’t given a chance at Vegas.

And as for their fan base, funny story. I recently had a one on one hockey training session with a guy who happens to be a former Gopher. I think we were working on shooting and he says something like “think of something that makes you super angry and harness that energy”.
I replied “Sue fans!” He started laughing and said he hadn't heard that one before but appreciated the sentiment. :D

Sheehy, Mittlestadt, and Walker have all had 10+ goal freshmen seasons recently so I wouldn't be surprised if someone does it next season. Who is more likely, Meyer or Brodz?

I don't watch enough high school hockey to rate Bryce over other high end players. But he had so many bang bang goals in tight quarters, that I am excited to see what he can do with more space on the Olympic sheet. The kid has an incredible shot. I'd be surprised if he doesn't have 10 goals and I am hoping for something closer to Johnny's 22. A lot will depend on PP opportunities of course.

Meyers is a 98 birth year who played 2 years USHL & will be turning 21...one of the best players in the USHL last year, he’s the freshman who “should” make the most impact and very well might take Burke’s spot on the top line with Walker & McLaugjlin. Bryce & Perbix will be good too, but they’re 18-19 years old.

I’ll go with Walker for points leader. And Brinkman for biggest jump, depending on how you are defining that.

Hard to disagree with Walker, would be nice if some of the upperclassmen push him for points lead. I'd really like to see McManus or Reedy step up bigtime. Otherwise, I expect some of the sophmores to have nice progressions. As for defense, we could use steady improvement accross the board and would be nice if you are correct about Brinkman.

Sammy Walker will lead in points. Sampo Ranta will make the biggest jump. They are going to win 20+ games this year. Not counting the BIG tournament or NCAA tournament which they will make this year.

I really hope so, that’d be a game changer.

As far as most improved I’d probably go with McLaughlin. I also feel like Reedy was better as a freshman when he wasn’t injured so he seems like another candidate (though part of that was being on lines with CM and/or Pitlick), McManus is a possibility too.
<GophDogFan> yep, so sad... you have a new moment, when your uncle gets mad because you got the best of him. the last straw was when i told him that UND's hockey program is like crystal pepsi: Nobody every liked it.

McLaughlin had a sneaky good freshman year, and I do think he'll make a bigger impact this season. He's a relentless worker, hard on the puck and a creative play maker.

Ranta has the tools but not sure he has the IQ. Hopefully he figures it out this year. If he does, that would be a pleasant surprise and a big add.

So it’s official?? Alcohol sales at mariucci now.
Official, official... now all are authorized to complain about the price of the beverages as their new complaint on their list.

I doubt I'll complain about the price of a beer. Now I might complain about the options if they only serve watered down light beer (or Lite beer).

And no Gator to complain about me getting up to find a decent beer!

Well if it is anything like Football games the selection wont be much but people will pay ridiculous prices for them. ;)

Let’s hope people at the games go broke because of the alcohol prices before they get too loaded and ruin it for the other fans with kids who won’t be drinking.

Right, because people aren’t drinking up at the bars before the games.

Right, if anything incidents at TCF went down after alcohol sales, at least that's what I remember hearing. Maybe instead of making blanket rules banning adults from enjoying an alcoholic beverage as if they're teaching a kindergarten class they can just deal with the idiots who get too loaded like they always have.
<GophDogFan> yep, so sad... you have a new moment, when your uncle gets mad because you got the best of him. the last straw was when i told him that UND's hockey program is like crystal pepsi: Nobody every liked it.

I'm guessing you haven't been to a Gopher Football game this decade? This is the year to go.

I was wondering how fast one of the booze hounds would reply with a “people come to the games with a few drinks already under their belt”. I have nothing against a couple drinks but now you ADD those people you refer that drink before the game and now during the game = my original comment. You will see more people that have had too much.

 Father of 3, come to our share of games every season....can't wait to sip a beer during the 2 1/2 hours they pester me for ice cream and whatever else on the nights they're not dialed in to the game. It balances out. Back when the building was full, the toilets were littered with empty eighths and shooters of liquor....

LOL. I am not a booze hound. But I do prefer to have a beer or two at fun events.

You might find that there are fewer people that arrive bombed because they now know they don’t have to slam a few before leaving the bar.

No need to be a nervous Nelly over an event that may or may not happen and might not even be affected by the new rule. I’ve been to college hockey events all over and there isn’t a discernible difference between those with alcohol and those without.

My worst experience was at Kohl Center and they don’t have alcohol. The calmest crowd was in Denver and they have beer stands everywhere.

Time to calm your bad self.

Edit- Actually my worst experience was at the old Decc but it was mostly spurred by their Chicken Mascot who was spraying water on Gopher fans with a Super Soaker. I assume he wasn’t drunk, just a dick.

As long as they there loud, let the beer flow freely. I wouldn't mind a few drink lots fans going nuts.
