So the ugly helmets have the same problem getting people to show up for hockey games? They have the same outrageous ticket prices as the Gopher athletic department?

I know there will be at least a dozen Gopher fans at Saturday’s game (Fri too!)

Why do folks think there won’t be anyone there? The Gopher games at yost have been well attended in the recent past.

Or are we thinking they’ll all want to watch the football game?

It looks like, but can't tell 100%. that the jersey Goldy is wearing may be the alternate jersey with Gophers down the front. He usually ( not always) wears the same style as the team that night. If that is the case, would that be around 2013 or so? I know I have a replica one with WCHA on it, but did they use that style for a few years after that and in the B1G?

Considering that the goalie has a B1G patch on his jersey, it would have to be post-realignment.

Bugged me enough that I went digging. Friday the 13th of February, 2015:

I'd certainly take a repeat of that weekend on the scoreboard for the Gophers (6-2, 2-0 sweep for the Gophers)

A sweep would be very nice. This could be the weekend Laffer really dials in and starts playing like last year. If he does and the Gophers play like they can the Gophers will sweep this weekend.

I would think that would serve as a distraction for the Michigan shooter? Hopefully he took it off when the Gophers were going that way.

We’re 6-2 when scoring first and 4-5 when we don’t. It’s simple stuff.

So tBob says Sammy is moving back to center for the games vs Michigan because he needs speed up the middle. So, does he reunite Walker with McLaughlin or does he just swap Huglen to the wing on that line? I say he reunites them for the weekend. My predictions--
29-39-89
7-9-27
21-24-22
11-25-18
77 in game 1, 10 in game 2

Looking forward to flying out to Detroit on Friday. Watching the Michigan preseason videos their players view the Gophers as their most anticipated opponent. Both teams play a wide open/entertaining hockey. Personally, I would love a sweep, but a split is most likely.

I’m about to ask a very naive and borderline dumb question. But for a young fan like myself I’m curious why there is a lot of hatred for Michigan from some gopher fans. I really like this rivalry and this matchup between us and Michigan but I don’t dislike them quite the same as I dislike UND, UW or even UMD. So fans who have watched the gophers a lot longer than I have please enlighten me if you wouldn’t mind. Is it just two old school blue bloods that have contempt for each other? Was there a certain player or game that really heightened the rivalry (the Mike Legg goal for instance)? Is there something about their fans? Just curious why Kevin Ames over on Facebook and many others have such a strong distaste for Michigan. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for it. One of the pros of the Big Ten hockey conference in my opinion is we’re conference rivals with Michigan. Just looking for some context. Again, sorry if this is a face palm level naive question from a younger fan.

Funny! Our daughter was accepted by Michigan (and Wisconsin) but was wait listed by the U. After a short wait she was accepted, enrolled at Carlson and graduated with a double major in Accounting and Finance.

Based on her experience the U of M is the real "public ivy". :good2:

I have often referred to Michigan fans as Puffy Chest U that think they are the center of the universe.

This was highly on display at the X for the Fozen Four in 2002. Loud, obnoxious and arrogant beyond belief.

I mean they would start $h!t in the restrooms of all places, and during the moment of silence for Shawn Walsh at the beginning of the title game they were so out of control that at one point someone screamed at a congregated section of these idiots from way across the arena, "SHUT UP YOU STUPID MICHIGAN FANS!!".

Only aholes with a reputation could garner such prcise blame and response in that moment.

I went to the semifinal game in 2002 against Michigan. At Tom Reid's bar before the game, they were singing the Michigan song in unison as loud and as obnoxiously as they could. They were a cocky bunch, guaranteeing victory and giddy about the certainty of playing in another title game.

There were a lot of long Michigan faces later that night. I saw a few of them down on west 7th lip jacking with elated Gopher fans. They were less than charitable with their congratulations and refused to succumb to the reality that they were done. One day, fans will understand that sort of churlish behavior makes winning even sweeter for the victors.

Don't worry if you're wondering if someone is a Michigan grad. They'll tell you before they properly introduce themselves.

Michigan was in the WCHA with us back in the good old days so it's an old rivalry.

Also, about 15 years ago they had a reputation of going for the knees. I know they took out Stoa for a year, and I'm thinking there was another Gopher (maybe Barriball?) who got his ACL torn thanks to them.

I don't think I have ever been as angry at a goal being scored as I was at that one.
I think what I am most pissed about is that any move where you pick the puck up is called “a Michigan”. Any. Other. Name.

Vanek's low angle goal to win the NCAA semi final in 2003 didn't do it for you?

I just think it’d be kind of amusing if one our guys scored on them with a Mike Legg goal. Even better if it was at Yost.

Aaron Huglen is your man for that. He should have four years to give it a try. Make it an NCAA game against them, though.

That, coupled with Paul Martin's diving block to rob the Ugly Helmets of the go-ahead goal earlier in the game (he blocked it with his hand, IIRC), should be enough for anyone.

Question - I will be at the airport Friday evening, does anyone have any idea if there’s a restaurant/bar there that might have BTN?
There’s a couple of “sports” type bars that might dedicate a tv to BTN. Twins Grille, Cold Stone and I’m pretty sure there’s a BWW. I’m not sure if all of these are currently open, lots of places at MSP are still closed due to lack of staff.
No offense to the VonTrapps, but if I’m at a lavish party and seven kids start singing about going to bed…I’m using that time to refresh my drink.

Thanks! Back up option is the phone of course :)

I don’t see a live stream option for this game on the BTN+ app - does that mean it cannot be seen outside of TV?

Yes. Back to Back Frozen Four dumps of UMI was sweet. But it was the unexpected nature of Vanek's goal (much like the Legg goal) that sticks in my brain. I certainly wasn't expecting a shot, much less a goal.

MI had a couple really good teams in 02 and 03, good enough to go all the way. I'm sure they hated MN for upending them 2 straight seasons.

Cruikshank and Lucius are two sleeping giants that would be huge to wake up. Specifically Cruikshank I know he has so much to offer this team I think it will start to show down the stretch in the second half.

For the first few games I though Lucius was practically invisible out there, but more recently I think he's really stepped up his game as he goes through the acclimation process. Sure hope he stays on that path all the way through the end of the season.

They play two songs over and over. On tv it’s annoying, but inside Yost it’s “I want to eat glass” annoying.

That page makes no sense. It has Michigan as having played 10 conference games.

Scroll down on this page to see how a real hockey-focused conference does it.

That page looks interesting and has potential to be bookmark worthy, but whoever is managing it is totally lost. Garbage in, garbage out when it comes to data.

Anyway, I was watching some highlights of past Minnesota vs Michigan games. A few that stuck out were of course the weekend at Yost last year when we swept them and Laffer got the shutout. Another was I believe MLK weekend 2017 when Lettieri scored on a penalty shot. Finally, was the last Friday of the regular season in 2020. Even though we ended up losing the shootout it was a really fun game. I remember we went down two to zero and came back to tie it in the third with a snipe from Lacombe and a tip by McManus from a Robbie Stucker slap shot. One last moment of that game that stuck out was when we were three on three and McLaughlin faked going back to the bench with the puck only to back hand it to Walker who would have been in all alone but unfortunately poor Lacombe was completely unaware and caught offsides lol. From my seat I could see Lacombe get back to the bench, clearly disappointed, but Zuhlsdorf wrapped the guy in a big hug to pep him back up. As many have mentioned, this series is always exciting and entertaining and I’m looking forward to seeing how the boys handle this weekend. Go Gophers!

If 2nd rounder Broz continues to get healthy scratched in the second half of the year that could cause some offseason drama. But as of now it's on him he hasn't been doing enough.

Outside of special teams, Johnson and Faber containing Johnson/Beniers/Brisson or not is going to determine who wins this weekend. Surely a top 5 forward line the Gophers have played since the DOT line.
