Breaking MLB news

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/295 ... oronavirus
Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred told MLB Players Association executive director Tony Clark on Friday that if the sport doesn't do a better job of managing the coronavirus, it could shut down for the season, sources familiar with the conversation told ESPN.
Isn't that the leagues job (with input from the player's union)? I mean as far as I can tell baseball in Korea is happening without many outbreaks.

Americans can be insufferable idiots at times and the blasé attitude (obviously being judged from afar in this case) toward Covid by so many is case in point.

It’s a virus it doesn’t give a sh*t about arbitrary rules.

Are we shooting for zero cases now? I thought it was about keeping the hospital system in check?

My point is, we are trying to at least reduce risk. Zero cases is pretty much impossible.

The rules are there to reduce the risk, but many simply can't even do that, so the stricter limits are back in place.

“The Rules” were put in place to flatten the curve and keep the medical system from being overwhelmed all at once. That system is in good shape.

What is the measure for “reduced risk”?

The social distancing and masks. The new MPLS rule about no rail service was because people weren't following the SD rules.

I wasn’t asking what measures were put in place.

I was asking how do you measure “reduced risk?” How will we know when enough risk was reduced? Since there will surely always be cases like you mentioned.

I wonder how much this move cost Cespedes. How much will it cost him in his contract knowing he pulls stunts like this?

So you can pitch 7 innings and get a CG now. That's an asterisk worthy stat for me.

That slider is unholy. My goodness.

The look on Freeman's face after the fastball says it all.

27 years ago today, this happened. One of my favorite moments in sports (I am a HUGE Nolan Ryan fan). Ventura got ejected but Nolan did not.

Ventura runs out like he wants to fight and then it appears as if he at the last minute decides to, instead, tackle Nolan. They guy buries his own face in Nolan's chest which is perfect for Nolan as he easily wraps his arm around Ventura's head and proceeds to punch Ventura in the face about 15 times.

Ventura could not have played that worse.

I know teammates are supposed to show loyalty but I bet a lot of Chi Sox players did not love having to tangle with a legend like Nolan.

No chance that was 99MPH because there's no chance a catcher gets it if it was going that fast.

Ummm, there have been pitches just as nasty, if not nastier, and going faster, and the catcher nabs it.

A couple of things:
Number A: a knuckleball is the hardest pitch to catch, and that is in the 60s, for MPH.
Number B: Being that a catcher is calling the pitches, and knows the pitcher, he knows generally where the pitch is going to end up (along with the catcher lining up behind the plate), the catcher, being a professional, will figure out where that pitch will end up.

The pitch itself is ridiculous. That would be a great slider for a lefty. A righty being able to make a baseball do that is just not normal. I just don't think it looks like it's going anywhere near 99MPH. Even the hitter swings through it like its a change/curve.

I mean he did it again with a 98mph two seamer a few batters later (slightly less dramatic because there is no desperate swing from Machado but it still starts in off the plate and ends up on the outer third). Whereas the pitch to Machado started inner third and ended up on Machado's back leg.

Overlay of May's Cutter and 2-seam. Probably explains why Machado failed so much. This is insane.

Some teams are going to have a significant number of double-headers scheduled to make up ground on lost games. No further comment.

People bitching about swinging on a 3-0 with the bases loaded sound as stupid as people that say don't run up the score in a college hockey or football game.

If you don't want a batter to hit a grand slam off of you, don't groove one over the heart of the plate on a 3-0 count.

In 2007 they won a game 30-3, yes.

The funny part is that wasn't even a bad pitch. 93ish low and away, almost on the corner of the K zone. Tatis just smoked it.

Wasn’t it in the top of the 8th in a 7 run game? A lot of crap can happen in two innings if the bullpen can’t get guys out.

Baseball can be really stupid with its unwritten rules. I’m glad his manager was forced to backtrack today because he should have stood up for his player last night.

If he had popped out, there would be no fuss.

Just sayin'. It's weird.

Exactly. He hit a pretty good pitch really really hard. If he rolls that same pitch over to shortstop for a double play do you think the Rangers bitch about him swinging 3-0? Nope.

And coming from a team that intentionally dropped a foul ball last year to try to get Mike Minor another strikeout to get to 200 Ks on the season, their criticism about breaking unwritten rules is kinda funny.

A couple years ago the Red Sox were up 9-0 in the 6th. By the 8th they were down 13-9.

Man... those Padres uniforms are awesome. I went to San Diego a few years ago and took a tour of Petco Park. I remember thinking at the time it was a shame that such a fine ballpark was wasted on such a crappy franchise. I'd love to see the Padres find some success. Hopefully Tatis can help turn things around there.

Good thing the Phillies didn't swing at a 3-0 pitch when they were up 7-0.

I am not a great baseball mind but from what I gather the past few days, professional players think the team with a big lead should take it easy on the other team (losing team is filled with professional baseball players). And the losing team can go balls out?

The first half I understand if the losing team wants to call “mercy” and give up. In the Phillies game can the Phillies now claim they would have crushed Toronto but lightened up do to the mercy rule? Are the Phillies now allowed to bean Toronto players for trying?
