MLB to begin tinkering with computer strike zones. Leave the game alone. Please.

They say the main problem they're having is with breaking balls, specifically low and inside, and low and outside.

Rather than going to computerized during the game, use the computer analysis to flag questionable pitches and get rid of the umpires that consistently screw things up. (Yes, I know the umpire's union would never allow this, but, that's how to actually fix this... screw up these calls too much, find a new job)

EDIT: To be clear, I understand how difficult some calls are to make. I'm suggesting using the computer to flag the mis-calls for human review. When you see some of those "this pitch broke physics" that get mis-called... a human can say "naah... that's easy to miss" while still seeing just blown calls and count those.

That's a pretty hefty punishment. An asterisk next to their World Series title would be warranted as well IMHO.

That isnt good news for the Red Sox who *might* have been caught doing the same thing.

Personally, I am glad. It is one thing to steal a sign when you are on second base as a runner...it is another to have cameras actively giving it away. This crap needs to be stopped and the only way is to pimp slap the teams that try this.

I mean the Astros didnt even try and hide it...and I am pretty sure they tried it this year as well.

Agreed. If I'm a runner on 2nd and I'm tipping off the batter, hey... you shouldn't have let me get to 2nd base if you're going to use hand-signs that I can see to communicate with each other.

The assorted electronic assistance on the other hand is a very different question.

Normally I would say yes but in this case (and in the case of Boston) you go after management and the coaches. If you want to stop this in its tracks you go after the GMs and managers. Alex Cora should be hit even harder...

Would not surprise me to hear a whole lot more accusations about other organizations or teams doing this in the near future (a la Logan Morrison). Seems very unlikely that Houston and Boston were the only teams. Just sayin.

While I agree that the players should be disciplined too, from a practical perspective, it would get to be really hard to figure out who was involved, how deeply they were involved, and gather enough evidence to get past the inevitable union grievance over the matter.

The flipside: are you going to defy your coach? You just might be out of a job and possibly blackballed. The punishment fell on mgmt, as it should have been.

To go along with this, we had a coach during traveling ball and high school ball that used to be able to pick up signs occasionally and bark out signals of what pitch was coming.
I told him not to say anything to me when I was up because I didn't want to know. I found myself swinging at pitches I normally wouldn't just because I knew it was a fastball or whatever so I'd try to gear up to really get into it. By the time I recognized the location I'd already basically committed to the swing. It drove me insane.

And that kind of thing is exactly why figuring out who was involved, and to what degree, would be a practical impossibility. You'd have to determine who was part of the scheme, and who was just following orders. Sounds like Beltran likely was in it as deep as he could be, but what about the rest of the players? I'm sure there was a spectrum ranging from helping instigate and set it up, all the way through following orders and likely to some that avoided any real part at all. How to sort through all these and punish each accordingly? Yeah, good luck. The GM/Coaching staff? That's easy... You ran the team, you're responsible, you're gone.

You think any owner wouldn't trade draft picks and lose their GM/Manager for a WS title. They don't care and no impact to the players or anybody involved.

I don't think you can underestimate how much of this was the commissioner wanting to come down hard on Jeff Luhnow for being a trash heap of a human being and forcing a change in the Astros culture that had become a major embarrassment for the league.

Who knows if it is true or just BS. Beltran say she is not related to him. :?:

Gary Sheffield Jr. is claiming that the account is actually an MLB player's burner account. Who says baseball is boring?

The thing is, as soon as GMs and coaches became the targets you knew they were gonna start squealing on the players. They arent going to go down without a fight. Hell I bet Cora starts leaking stuff ASAP because my guess is his career is done. (he should be banned for life Pete Rose style)

I feel way more angry about this than I ever did about steroids.

It doesn't matter what Rose did, or if what the Astros did was "worse." Rose broke the rules, where the punishment was clearly laid out beforehand, and he did it anyway. So, he can shut his piehole.

This is a new situation with the technology and such. I can't see vacating the title, but I could see HUGE suspensions, maybe (long shot) a banning or two, and that will be that.

How long have games been broadcast on TV?
I'd guess that's how long people have been using technology to steal signs.
This isn't new. The Astros may have done it best (or worst, since they got busted) when it comes to breaking patterns (especially with runners on 2B when catchers will throw 3-4-5 numbers down) but I'd bet teams have been using something like this for a long time. They just didn't use a trash can.

Larry Walker shouldn't have had to wait 10 years to get in. Great player.

Who's the tool who didn't vote for Jeter? His entry was unanimous, short a single vote.

On the cheating scandal, Baseball has always had its dark companion. It's been a fascinating part of baseball lore, dating back to the Black Sox Scandal of 1919 and probably before. There are these complicated series of signs flashed by the catcher, the first base coach, the bench coach, the third base coach - all out in the open. It's only natural that opponents would endeavor to decipher their meaning and capitalize on this knowledge. The temptation is too great, for some. Now, adding in modern-day electronics is a whole 'nother level. That's like sitting around a table in Spring Training, engineering methods for cheating during the upcoming season.:)

I'm of the opinion that if Houston cheated in the World Series, then, yes, that is an ill begotten championship that should be vacated. Seriously, anybody who's ever played the sport at any level knows that if you know what pitch is coming before it ever leaves the pitcher's hand, it makes a HUGE difference.

Kind of reminds me of why the guy who calls the play in football makes sure to hide his moving lips. If the other team's defense knows what play is coming it also "makes a HUGE difference".

Maybe at this point we can just confirm what teams, if any, weren't stealing signs in an aggressive and inappropriate way?
The LA community (to differentiate from the teams) is apparently now claiming 2 World Series wins since the two implicated teams that won a World Series (Boston and Houston) beat LA.

That's not quite how that works...

As Rube mentioned elsewhere not even Nolan Ryan was a unanimous selection.

Jeter was the 2nd coming of Mr. October but he was awful defensively.
Currently under construction.

He’s a first ballot Hall of Famer but not a unanimous Hall of Famer. The dumb part is there was only 1.

Or it proves that the voter had 10 guys who he thinks should be HoF and knew Jeter was gonna get elected first ballot anyways so he prioritized the other ten players thinking his vote would be more meaningful to them than being vote number 391 for Jeter, especially given the fact that players need X amount of votes to stay on the ballot.

People need to get over themselves with this faux outrage about guys being unanimous or not. Look back in the history of the HoF. There are plenty of players far better than Jeter that weren't unanimous.
Just my opinion.

I've got to agree with you there. Does Jeter belong in the HOF? Yes. Does it bother me that it wasn't unanimous, when then ONLY other unanimous vote was Rivera? How could that possibly bug me? The fact that there aren't more unanimous votes from the past bothers me more than this possibly could.

Ugh. Why can’t we ever be happy with the way the formats are. Pretty soon everyone will be in the playoffs. More tv, more advertising, more money, more, more, MORE! Where does it end?

Choosing your opponent is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.

Going to 7 teams is dumb as hell.
I don't hate the #1 seed getting their choice of opponent though. It's super gimmicky but the fan in me kinda wants to see it.
