As long as KAT is their "star", they're going nowhere.

The Big Ticket says he is out of the bidding for T Wolves. Glen Taylor said he never talked to him. This pretty much sums up this franchise.

Wolves beat the Blazers last night behind a great game from Anthony Edwards. Kid has been looking like the real deal the last couple weeks. Fun to see.

I'm not a follower of the NBA, but I just saw that the Rockets have lost 20 games in a row  They play the Wolves on Friday...

Cunningham looks like a star apparently. Sure the Wolves can't luck into another 1 overall, but Houston doing everything they can to increase their odds further.

The Wolves may have hit an absolute home run with Anthony Edwards. He's awfully good and absolutely took over down the stretch in a win against Tom Thibodeau and the Knicks.
Wolves were down 13 with 8 and change left an come back to win 102-101 behind 12 points and the very nice assist on the go-ahead 3 from Edwards

Even with the worst record in the NBA there is a 60% chance they don't keep their pick this year.
Technically speaking, Houston and Detroit (the two teams with the next two worst records) have the same odds of getting picks 1-2-3 as the Wolves do. But with the worst record in the league the Wolves can't fall farther than 5th. Second worst can fall to 6th and 3rd can fall to 7th.
For the Wolves case it doesn't really matter as long as long as their odds to stay in the top 3 don't decrease. If they don't get a top 3 pick it goes to Golden State.

Ok but if they fall as far as possible from 1st, 2nd or 3rd a 5th pick > 7th. Perhaps that's not as big a deal as trying to learn how to win now, but even that only makes sense if they expect their roster to remain mostly intact for next season.

Any pick outside the top 3 belongs to Golden State because of the Wiggins/DeAngelo Russell trade. So technically speaking, finishing third (same odds as a top three pick as first and second) and giving Golden State worse odds to finish lower would theoretically be better for the Wolves in the long run. If GSW gets a 4th overall pick they would be (allegedly) getting a better player than they would at 5-6-7.

Taylor has control of the team until 2023. The new group has a couple years to get their relocation plans all lined and then it's "Abyssinia!!!"

How iron clad is the target center lease? And when does it expire.

I know that’s one of the only reasons (iron clad lease) why the Pats are still in Boston. Kraft owned the stadium and refused to give up the lease so the owner sold him the team.

There is no such thing. The only thing stopping them will be a $50 million buyout clause with Target Center and possibly short term Vegas and Seattle getting franchises via expansion.

Not what Glen said. Here’s his quote:
"They will keep the team here, yes. We will put it in the agreement. At this point we have a letter of intent, but when we make up the contract we’ll put that in there. That’s no problem. That won’t be a problem."
Which is why they’ll move in 2025 vs. 2023.

From what I saw the the Lynx are part of the deal. Methinks the possibility of the Lynx moving will elicit more of a response than the 'wolves.

With 30 teams it seems more likely NBA expands to 32 rather than move teams. My guess is Vegas and Seattle are expansion franchises in the next few years.

Expansion means more money for the owners. They (the NBA owners) will almost certainly approve a request for an expansion team or two before they'd relocate.

Correct. Chris Hine in StarTribune wrote an article last July about why.

https://www.startribune.com/taylor-won- ... fresh=true

The league has to approve any sale and would likely not approve any sale that includes language that locks an ownership group into keeping a team in a certain city.

Also from the article:
The same could apply to a court, which could rule that restrictions might be too stringent to the business’ ability to operate as the owners see fit. For instance, if the economy in Minneapolis or the state tanks and a move would make financial sense for the league or owners, a court could rule any previous agreement to not move the team would be too harmful to the overall business.
Personally I would not be heartbroken if the Wolves moved.

$50 million won't stop an NBA owner from moving. Move the team from MN and the value of the franchise will probably jump $100 million overnight.

I don't even like the wolves, but all I ask is they write into the contract the naming rights stay with the state of MN if the team is moved out of state. The history of the Wolves franchised can't be moved. Luc Longly and Pooh Richardson lore stays put!

Agreed that $50 million won't stop.them. I should have made that more clear.

While I'm not an NBA fan like I used to be, it's never a good thing for a franchise to move. I hope they figure it out and elect to stay. Their existence has no negative impact on my life and there are fans in the state that will be bummed out.

Once "alternate" or "+" feeds became a thing I no longer actively wanted the Wolves to go away.

Yet they're as bad as any other Timberwolves team. 27 games out of first and 13 games behind the last "play-in" team for expanded playoff. Just a half game out of last place in all of the NBA.

I doubt the NBA allows them to win the "lottery" again, but they may need it again just to not suck at Timberwolves standards. Yeesh.

It's a 2% chance to win back to back 1st overall picks. That won't happen. Maybe they'll get the hometown kid Suggs. They'll suck until A-Rod moves them somewhere.

MN has a 14% chance...if you think it isn't rigged.

Looks like they have a 60% chance of losing the pick to Golden State. If you do understand the draft is rigged, this means the wolves have a 0% chance at the #1 pick..

14% but the odds of two #1's in a row is 2%.

Huh? If the odds that the Wolves get the #1 pick this year are 14%, then the odds of them getting two in a row are 14%.

It's 0.14 x 0.14 = 0.0196 or 2% if you look at nothing but the percentages. It's probably much less than that for most teams as they would presumably get better and not be in last place the year after a #1 overall pick. But then you have the Timberwolves.

But the Wolves have already knocked out the first half of that so it's now 14% for them going back to back. Amusing (intended spelling) it is not rigged.

Given that the Timberwolves got the last #1 pick, the odds of them getting 2 in a row are 14% (Assuming they don't suddenly get out of the hold they're in currently, of course)

Also the 60% chance losing it to Golden State if they DO get the #1 isn't counted there.

There is no chance of losing it to GS if they get the number one, number two, or number three pick.
If it falls outside the top 3, it becomes Golden State's. It is a top-3 protected pick. So it's a 60% chance they have to trade it, a 40% chance they keep it, and a 14% chance they pick #1.

I just read the Wolves finished 3-0 against the team that will be the #1 seed in the Western Conference this year. I also saw they were 8-6 this year when Towns and Russell play together.

That's not going to set the world on fire but you have to wonder if this is a small step towards some respectability.

Yes. Utah is 44-14 against everyone else and 0-3 against Minnesota.
The Wolves are about to win their 3rd straight game, their longest winning streak of the year. First win @ Houston since 2012 (although the Rockets are the worst team in basketball this year).

They've been mostly playing better basketball with Russell and Towns getting to play together, as you alluded to. With those 2 and Anthony Edwards they've got the makings of a really good big 3.

McDaniels looks like he could end up being a very useful rotational piece, Beasley has already shown he can be a big time scorer, Naz Reid looks like he can be a serviceable big man, and Okogie is a very good wing defender. They're still one real PF/C away from being a legitimate playoff contender (though I do have some optimism that McDaniels could end up being that guy, he's only a rookie and has already shown some ability to score a bit and he's mostly been good defensively in the post despite being relatively skinny).

If they do get to keep their pick this year, Evan Mobley could be a really interesting pick. If not, I wouldn't be surprised to hear them trying to trade a guy like Beasley to somebody like Cleveland to try to get a chance to draft Jalen Johnson or Scottie Barnes to try to solidify the PF spot.

I was at the game on Monday night. It was fun to be at a sporting event again since the last one was the state hockey tournament last March. Couldn’t believe they won..especially after getting down 18 early. Although the last Wolves game I was at they beat Lebron. Maybe I’m just good luck.

It always sounded like it was on shaky legal ground from the get-go. The real thing stopping the new owners from moving will be the desire of the league and owners to collect expansion fees from Seattle and Las Vegas. With those two cities off of the table, where else would they move them to that would be a much better proposition?

Alex Rodriguez is the snake! Trusting him to keep the team here is the biggest mistake the Wolves could make!! He will move the Wolves, the first chance he gets. My guess is Seattle!!

Seattle and Vegas are getting expansion franchises. The owners can get $2B that route versus some paltry move fee.

They might still move but it won’t be either of those two places.

I would be shocked if the NBA doesn't put an expansion team in Seattle and Vegas. That is big $$$ they'd be pissing away by moving a team instead of putting an expansion team there.

As multiple people have stated, Seattle and Lost Wages are getting expansion franchises. That means moving to an "untapped" market. If I were a betting man, I would guess St. Louis, San Diego, or Nashville (in no particular order).

Former Gopher Bobby Jackson named head coach of the Kings G league team. Looks like it is the next step before becoming an NBA head coach. Served as an assistant on the Kings last year.

I'd be surprised if any of those cities were a real possibility for relocation. MAYBE St. Louis but they just lost a damn NFL team (granted, the Rams owners are dicks, but still). I could see Kansas City getting some mention as a relocation spot. The NBA already has 4 teams based in CA. Plus approximately 15 D1 NCAA hoops teams. I don't see a huge benefit in adding a 5th. Tennessee already has one NBA team. Not sure they have the fan support for a second team. I think Kansas City would be a better bet than any of those spots, personally.

It's more likely that the new ownership group tries to get a new arena built vs. moving them out of Minnesota, IMHO. Minnesota has the ability to be an extremely good basketball market when the teams are good. It's just a matter of the team getting good. Back when KG was here and the Wolves were good, the Wolves were exceptionally popular in Minnesota. We're a top 15ish market nationally that has a ton of high end local youth talent.

Unfortunately with Glen's terrible ownership, ticket prices have continued to increase despite the product on the court being abysmal. In 2019 the average (this is including the high end seats, courtside, etc) ticket price for the Wolves was $107. The lowest price was $10, which I assume is top row of the upper deck, and highest was $204. That's absurd given how terrible the team was.

Hopefully the new ownership group comes in and repairs the damaged relationship with the fans (seriously, have you ever heard a fan say anything positive about Glen Taylor?) and can reconcile the fandom.

For those stating SEA and LV are getting expansion teams this is pure speculation to date. While likely to happen some of you make it sound like it's a 100% done deal. It's also possible Taylor is privy to something being afoot that the public yet isn't.
Currently under construction.

As long as the Lakers made the post-season in some fashion, they were going to be the Western Conference and most likely, NBA favorite. James played 45 games out of 72 and Davis played 36; 34 wins would have gotten them into the playoffs, so why push any harder? If the NBA is fortunate, they end up with a Lakers-Brooklyn final, which will generate interest based on the players and markets involved. But "seeding" means virtually nothing regarding who wins titles.

The Wolves didn't land in the top 3 of the lottery so the Warriors get the pick. #7 overall.
