The real loss in the business of professional sports is in the communities of players lost. While new players come and hopefully have a matching impact, those who "grew up" in the community or got their professional start seem to have a great reach. Jason Zucker, Kyle Rudolph, etc. It's a loss much more than just on the field/ice.

As a Chicago Bears fan, even I'm always rooting for Kyle.

The good news is that I believe Kyle and Jason both still live here and plan to keep raising their families here. I may be wrong on that, but thought I read it somewhere.

Kyle said it in his farewell dear MN letter. Carly said it on Twitter after the Zucker deal.

Zuckers can't move because of a child Carly had in a previous relationship. It is part of the custody agreement. She has been pretty open about it, so I'm not being TMZ about it.

Wasn't he the Vikings' best offensive lineman?
He had a very good season last year. But before the season started he was thought to be a cap casualty. They renegotiated a deal with him before the season to lower his cap # but included a couple performance bonuses. He had played 100% of the snaps through week 16, but had to sit out week 17 on the COVID reserve list which dropped him under the 93% line he needed to hit his bonus. The Vikings gave him the bonus anyways.

With the salary cap going down this year I imagine the Vikings approached him trying to work out an extension at a lower AAV and he said no. His cap hit in 2021 was going to be like $16mil. He was set to hit free agency in 2022. He evidently decided not to extend his deal so it became inevitable.

So the team with one of the worst OL in the league lost its best OL? Which CB will they take in the first round?

There are going to be an absolute S-load of high quality players in FA this year.
Case in point: KC just cut Eric Fisher.

It seems lately OL are to the Vikings what SP are to the Twins. I have some confidence they will sign a FA, but I little confidence they will build a complete line.

I mean with O'Neill, Cleveland, and Bradbury they've got 3 pretty solid pieces. If they can sign a starting guard or LT (or both) they'd be in good shape leading into the draft.

I'm really interested to see how the decrease in cap impacts some of the big name FAs. Maybe see a lot of 1-2 year deals so guys can get back into FA once the cap goes back up.

Yes, this year’s free agency market is going to be wild. There are players available that have no business not being locked up on a roster. Next Wednesday is going to be better than the draft.

Sounds like they've also agreed to terms with former Viking DE Stephen Weatherly and are bringing back Rashod Hill as well.

Hopefully they are able to land one of the high end LGs in FA.

It makes sense with the Mike Hughes situation as well. They Vikes have to decide whether or not to pick up his 5th year option which would be a 9 mil Cap hit. Which they almost certainly will not now.

Patrick Peterson? Meh. I think he has lost a step and AZ knows it.
AZ primarily plays a lot of man. Zimmer primarily uses a match up zone scheme.
Frankly I like Peterson moving to FS and ball hawking.

Zone and man make a difference in the fine point skillset used.
The same can be said for different OL schemes, a zone blocking scheme vs a power OL scheme.
Hardly any one these days in college & pro uses a pull / trap scheme for the OL.

The two second year Corners with Peterson or with Hughes?

No brainer.

Have to move on from Hughes. 5th year and he just hasn’t been on the field, at all.

Hughes? I know that's what I am pointing out. The Vikings seem to have made their choice by signing Peterson. Hughes 5th year option if picked up is around a 9 million Cap. Peterson is 10.

This will be his 4th year coming up, I don’t know what their cap hit will be if they cut him but I wouldn’t think too much. They have until May 1 to decline the following 5th year option at 9 mil.

I doubt they cut him but I doubt they pick up the 5th year option.

JEFF GLADNEY
DB, MINNESOTA VIKINGS

Vikings CB Jeff Gladney turned himself into the Dallas County Jail stemming from a third degree felony charge in April.
Gladney was accused of hitting his girlfriend with closed fists, choking her and “pulling (her) by her hair trying to hold her still in order to get the Face ID to work” on her phone outside his vehicle on April 2. Minnesota's No. 31 overall pick last year, Gladney faces up to 2-10 years in prison if convicted. The 24-year-old's career is likely over if all accusations are proven true.

There was (minimal, at least from me) hope that the Vikings were gonna be able to work out a trade with Baltimore to get Orlando Brown here.

The draft is 6 days away and I'm pretty curious to see what they do with their first pick. This is allegedly a very good offensive tackle draft, with Sewell and Slater headlining (and probably being drafted inside the top 10) but Darrisaw, Vera-Tucker (although most reports seem to think his best NFL position will be guard), Tevin Jenkins, Dillon Radunz, Liam Eichenberg, Alex Leatherwood, Sam Cosmi, and Walker Little all projected to be top 2 round picks.

I would not be surprised at all if Spielman gets a trade offer for 14 to move down and pick up a second round pick and jumps at the chance.

Just draft the MN kid and let's see what he can do as the next QB. This isn't a Super Bowl team so who cares, start the next wave.

I known of which kid you are speaking.

If they can get the MN kid from Becker via NDSU in any round but the 1st do it. His uncle is a friend of mine so I'm kinda biased but Dillon is a good athlete and while the knock on him as a tackle is that he doesn't have exceptionally long arms he moves quick enough and is nasty enough to play guard. Good family & kid. His father died young so my friend was a surrogate dad.

Trey Lance just may be coming out a year early in my opinion. His lack of college starts is the issue. If he had another year of tape for the pros to evaluate..... A friend of mine coached with his father years ago at UWEC. Good family also I have been told.

I think I'd be OK if they end up with Lance at 14. Let him sit a year behind Kirk and figure out what to do next season. The biggest issue with that is it leaves a huge hole at LT/LG and edge rusher

There is no way they are taking a QB in the first round even if it would be the right choice. It does completely against their MO. They have to go OL whether it's because they move up or trade down, but sadly don't be surprised if they pick CB.

They have been very stubborn in their avoidance of drafting guards and tackles.

Which will happen first? Vikings draft OT in the first round or Twins sign a starting pitcher in free agency? The MN Vikings are in the clock...

TBH it really depends on how the draft shakes out as to what they'll do at 14. With the QBs and WRs and Kyle Pitts that could all feasibly go top 10, there's a real chance they can have their pick of the litter at the edge rusher spot or at tackle.

Lawrence, Fields, Wilson, Mac Jones, and Trey Lance could all go in top 10 (I expect a team to trade up for Lance). Sewell figures to be in the top 10. Jamarr Chase and Kyle Pitts are top 10. I expect Pitts to go to Atlanta and Sewell to Cincinnati, though Cincy could go with Chase and reunite him with Joe Burrow.

That means the other 5 picks are probably going to be split between Waddle, Devonta Smith, Jaycee Horn, Patrick Surtain II, Rashawn Slater, Micah Parsons, and maybe a guy like Jaelon Phillips or Kwity Paye.

If Rashawn Slater is available at 14 it would seem to be a no brainer move. If he's not available, I'd hope Rick tries to trade down and accumulate some more capital and hopefully get a second round pick. Sewell and Slater seem to be the clear cut #1-2 tackles in the draft. But there are 3-5 more that could end up starting week 1 for a lot of teams that may go late first to mid second round.

Spielman SUCKS! He throws a way his 2nd pick this year, so he makes this trade to try to make up for an earlier blunder. Typical

I’m guessing once Slater went right in front of them they thought they could move back and get Tucker (and move Cleveland over to tackle). Then the Jets took Tucker.

They might have to move back up to get Derrisaw

Nah, in classic fashion they will ignore OL per usual and go DE or CB.

When Jones is good early in his career in NE remember the Vikings passed on him. Also that the Vikings would probably screw him up. He’s very lucky to be going to NE, McDaniels will give him a good career.
