It's very clear to me until there is a vaccine it's a world of no or next to no fans in hockey arenas at all levels HS and above.

No idea what thread this should go in but the OHL will have no body checking in their upcoming season. Definitely one of the weirder covid decisions I’ve seen made. If I were player I’d jump leagues quick before rosters are full. If you’re a halfway decent prospect you want nothing to do with peewee hockey at that age.

I keep hearing mid January for start teams to play in home arenas, with all Canadian teams in one division, how will playoffs go with not allowing crossing borders due to COVID?

That seems unlikely even though it would be cool. Probably go to Buffalo or maybe Detroit. Winnipeg is the obvious logistical choice to play here. It would be fantastic to see Montreal have to play in Boston. How far along are they on Seattle’s barn? Would be funny if Vancouver played games in it before they ever did.

This will go over well...
Maybe they should just relocate to Fort Collins or Tahoe for the season just to be in the division.

When playoffs start what will the NHL do regarding Canadian and USA teams not allowed to cross the border?

My guess would be by then they hope that border crossings are allowed or at a minimum, one crossing with some type of quarantine to do a playoff bubble will be ok.

It appears that they are changing the on side -- off side rule. Hopefully this will eliminate the non stop changes for this.

Won't quite stop them, but will trim them back quite a bit. A lot of those challenges were for a skate that was a millimeter above the ice, but clearly outside the line.

Really like the schedules released. Two games, same teams, same city, then move to the next. Glorified college schedule.

I saw also that Lundqvist is out indefinitely, heading for major heart surgery - including aortic valve replacement. Serious stuff.

I wonder if he has an aneurysm. It will all probably come out later, but I'll be interested to know what lead to the diagnosis. Nobody really looks for something like this for someone in his thirties, much less in a super athlete.

Why? Seems silly to play outdoors without fans. It’s a gimmick with no payoff.

From the article...
An NHL source told ESPN that selling the naming rights to its divisions is viewed internally as a one-year-only campaign.
Good luck with that. Once they open up that revenue stream, it's going to be nearly impossible to put the genie back in the bottle.

Three homes worth $10.2 M, he has nine lawsuits against him, The Cosmopolitan (LV Casion) settled one of the lawsuits for $500k in unpaid gambling debts and a $1.88M settlement for alleged battery. He lists 47 creditors... which is kind of mind boggling.

I assume the homes are assets (unless he hasn't paid them off). Wouldn't he be forced to liquidate the homes (or at least two of them) to pay down debt? And he is still scheduled to make $30M+ over the life of his contract. After taxes, agents, and layers, he should be able to pay down a decent portion of the $27M.....but he may have to live a little more like me and a lot less like Shaq.

How badly would it suck to know you're going to get paid $30M+ over the next 5 years and come out of it with nothing?

Please tell me the helmet ads aren’t a permanent fixture. Is there anything in our country they wont’ stick an ad on these days?!

Or maybe the Avs just really love canning....
It was only a matter of time before this happened. With the lose of revenues it totally makes sense to apply then now. With this increased revenue stream I have a hard time ever not seeing ads on players now.

NBA has had ads on jerseys for a few years now. If it would somehow cut down on commercials I would welcome any sort of in-game advertising. Hockey's not bad though when it comes to commercials compared to other sports.

I'm split on the ads on the helmets. Some of the ones that are small and clean, I don't mind. I think the Xcel on the Wild helmets look ok. The ones on Pitt and Philly last night looked way too big, and I was not a fan. As long as the jerseys and helmets don't turn into a Nascar suit, i could live with it.

Some soccer jerseys have tons of ads. Mexican league jerseys have ads all over them. Euro soccer jerseys usually have one big ad. But soccer doesn't have breaks for commercials during the game, so it's a little more understandable.

Kinda of weird how you buy a Manchester United jersey and all of a sudden you're a walking Chevy ad.

Don’t worry, helmets are just the gateway ad. It sure as heck won’t lessen commercials. Advertising is one thing this greedy country can’t get enough of.

Funny story along the soccer jersey line - several years ago (2009) I was in Seattle for a convention. Out and about town I kept seeing people wearing these bright green shirts with XBOX in big letters across the front. I do not follow soccer so I asked a relative we had lunch with one day, “is there an Xbox convention in town or something?”

I hope hockey never gets that far here. Especially if it seeps in to the college level, which I fear is only a matter of time as they run out of other places to stick ads.

The helmets or a single jersey sponsor doesn’t bother me a ton. I don’t like the euro advertising look. I wouldn’t not like that in the nhl or collegiate hockey.

Another talented player doesn't want to play for Torts and/or Columbus...

Bobrovsky, Duchene, Panarin, etc. (even before Torts, going back to Jeff Carter, Adam Foote, etc.)Not too surprising at this point. He put in a less than half-hearted shift in the first period and was benched the rest of the game. He already made it clear he wants out, and has pretty much quit on the team at this point.

He isnt the first star player to get benched, and wont be the last. That said, I imagine CBJ are trying to get as much as they can in a trade for him.

From a technical standpoint Torts is an exceptional coach. From a player friendly standpoint, he’s a SOB. Accordingly, in the year 2020, some simply get chafed playing for him.

Yeeshhh I’m glad I don’t cheer for the Peg. Columbus pulled off a hell of a deal...but it will be interesting to see if Laine signs there or if he’s dealt again since he’s still an RFA

Haha! 2 players, one wanted desperately out of Manitoba, the other desperately out of Ohio... One gets traded to the American Manitoba, the other to the Canadian Ohio, haha.

Willing to bet Laine does not resign with CBJ/torts.

Relating to the players, if he's one tenth of the ass he is with the press, why would anybody want to play for him? The guy is a pompous jerk.

There goes the man responsible for half the trades in the league. I’ll miss him. He always tried to make the team better. He may not have made the best moves all the time, but he sure tried. Never met a first round pick he wanted to hold on to.

Devils and Sabres games will be postponed the rest of the week because of covid. They played each other the other day and some Sabres players wanted the game cancelled because of all the cases on the Devils.

NHL adding additional items to the protocols. Including removing glass behind the benches to improve airflow.
https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/nh ... protocols/
The most noticeable to everyone watching will be the removal of all glass behind team benches. Clearly, the league is worried about air flow in that area, where contact is closest and lengthiest during games. The NHL isn’t waiting on that directive, asking it to be done in time for Thursday’s games.
• The NHL indicated it is considering asking teams to deploy portable air cleaners behind the benches, “in order to improve indoor air quality and mitigate airborne viral transmission.” These cleaners would use HEPA filters, which Consumers Reports magazine states “results in reductions of 50 per cent or higher in particulate matter.”

• Players and coaches are no longer permitted to arrive at the arena more than one hour and 45 minutes before puck drop. (The exception is for receiving necessary treatment of injuries.) All meetings — whether game day or not — should be virtually conducted.

• Teams are being asked to utilize (or create) additional locker room space for themselves and their opponents, with the league looking to have at least six feet between players at each of their stalls. Teams have one week to communicate their plans for accomplishing this. (If necessary, portable stalls can be provided to teams.)
