Tom Wilson sucks. What an ass.
Another player I would be tempted to give the benefit of the doubt. But this is Wilson, who has a history of dirty play and career-threatening, dirty hits.

He knew full well the guy had his helmet off and body slammed him to the ice anyway - twice. A player can get killed that way.

I would hope the league would teach this guy a lesson, but apparently nothing has worked so far.

The body slam is getting a lot of hate, but I think what he did to Buchnevich just before is worse. He slams his head to the ice while holding his hands up so he can’t protect himself. Then punches him in the back of the head.

I get maybe we see some amplified perspective on this one... but what are we doing here having a Department of Player Safety if none of the transgressions by Wilson against Panarin are taken into account.

I hate the idea of staged fighting in pro hockey, but next time anyone plays Washington... I wouldn't bat an eye if Tim "Dr. Hook" McCracken, Ross "Mad Dog" Madison, Clarence "Screaming Buffalo" Swamptown, Andre "Poodle" Lussier, Gilmore Tuttle and Ogie Ogilthorpe took the ice.

In my view, this one is on the league. Sending out a goon to fight a goon is wrong for the game and merely perpetuates what you're trying to stop.

I think he should be suspended for the rest of the year, including the playoffs. He should have to reapply for admission into the league next year, and it wouldn't hurt to do a full exam on him. Maybe he has CTE or something or maybe he's just a garden variety psychopath. It's obvious he can't control himself, and, in this way, he represents a real threat to player safety.

The union is in a bit of a pickle here. On the one hand they must represent a player's right to work. On the other, they must represent all the players' rights to work in a safe environment.

Wilson fined the max allowed by the players association collective bargaining agreement, $5,000. No suspension.

Pretty toothless dog they have for player safety.

What sucks is any opposing player taking Wilson to task would get punished more harshly than Wilson himself. I agree with streaky you don't necessarily want goons being sent out for retribution, but Wilson being able to get away with that kind of garbage is ridiculous. Does the league really think a significant % of its fanbase would rebel if they started significantly taking dirtbags like Wilson to task?

Or how much of this is on the players themselves?

Currently under construction.

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Pa ... %20safety.:

George James Parros (born December 29, 1979) is a retired American ice hockey player who played nine seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL). He currently serves as the head of the NHL's Department of Player Safety, with the title of senior vice president of player safety. No one knows how or why he has this position. All we know for certain is that he is a clown.

Because they always fine him a nickel for each offense.

Lemieux had an idea to fine both the player and ownership to hold everyone accountable but it never came to fruition. Also want to say Shanahan* handed out a big suspension to the guy who blindsided Hossa in the playoffs (Raffi Torres) almost a decade ago and then I think ownership talked to him and made sure that never happened again.

Yes, he does, absolutely. The NHL fines him 5K and the rest of the players in the league are like "Oh well, ya know, that's just hockey". What's the deterrent? The league gives him a few fines and suspensions (apologies to Wally Karbo) and the players do nothing and then he does it again and everyone is outraged. Nothing ever changes.

Per usual Elliotte Friedman has a solid take on Tom Wilson.

"If he’s delivering a ferocious open-ice hit, or making some kind of tough “hockey play,” I am more understanding. But this was neither."

So when Tom Wilson does this to Sidney Crosby it is fine?

The fact that he hasn't been just kicked out of the league entirely is mindblowing. He's been suspended twice for hits that happened in the damn preseason. That in and of itself is ridiculous.

There’s absolutely no excuse for what Wilson did. He should have been suspended for the remainder of the 20-21 season. How he’s not is a complete dereliction of duty by the management of the NHL, including the commissioner.

Wilson is the type who will end someone's career someday. When is the NHL going to REALLY deal with him? When it's too late? Suspend him for a season and dare the Players Association to defend him.
The NHL just inked a new, long term deal with ESPN and Turner Sports. Sh*t like this isn't exactly in the "Win New Fans!!!" promotional video. My wife isn't a mega fan, but she enjoys watching hockey. I showed her the video of the incident and she says "Did he really just punch that guy in the back of the head...while he was face down on the ice???? "
This wasn't "Just a scrum". Jeezus.

Why don't the players take a stand? They don't seem to have any problem holding out for money when the time comes. Why aren't they demanding action from the ownership and the league to ensure player safety?

That is quite a statement by the Rangers. Calling specific people out, by name, in public and saying their actions are a dereliction of duty.... I expect some changes will be made.

Alex Newhook will make it 3 BC players to jump to the show this year, tied with UND.

Some highly drafted players on that list that don't have rings for their college teams except the undrafted Cates.

It was my understanding from some of the posts I have seen, that some people assume that teams loaded with high draft picks are sure things to win the title. Just making an observation that is not the case.

I remember when Bickel played for the Rangers and took the opening "face-off" and was part of one of those when Torts coached them. Plus, Bickel fought Ryan Carter.

Says a lot about Wilson that he wasn't on the ice for the faceoff / line brawl. You know it's coming, face up to it.

Had he been on the ice for the opening face off it's possible the line-brawl and circus could have been avoided. Maybe not likely, but possible.

Why were the Rangers fined? What did they do? Ok. I just looked. They got fined for telling the truth.

What a sad corporate organization they have. Where truth is nothing.

Rangers fined a cool $250,000..
A quarter of million bucks and Wilson got $5000.
Dolan's estimated net worth is around $2B,
$250K for him is roughly equivalent to $5K to someone worth $40M
I doubt Wilson's worth $40M

Hobey Caufield has back to back OT winners.

Jackson Cates stepped right into the NHL like Pinto, Bernard-Docker, Kierstad, Farrance, Caufield, Knight, and Hardman.
Alex Newhook will make it 3 BC players to jump to the show this year, tied with UND.

Net worth is not the same as cash on hand or even a LOC.
I don't see where voicing an opinion on a punishment leveled on an act that would be a felony in every day life warrants a fine 50 times what Wilson recieved.
@JC65 I do think Dolan is a clown but the NHL ( My favorite pro league) is not and has not handled this competently.

The NHL is like any other organization. The powers that be don't like to be called out on their hypocrisy, so they punish the whistleblowers, and let the violators get off (relatively) scot-free.

Yeah I think Navy nailed it.

As for the NYR GM/president my guess is that the owner was planning to fire them anyhow for the performance of the team and then the Wilson thing happened while the wheels were already in motion. That said I could be wrong and don't know the internal machinations of the NYR front office, that's more of a guess.

AM34 has 40 in 49 and the highest goals per game rate since Lemieux in 95-96 (for 12+ games played). Five months younger than KK. Will take a lot to bring a Rocket Richard trophy to MN.

The Rangers getting fined that much for criticizing the league is unreal and they should be getting crucified in the press. They made an obviously awful decision on Wilson and then not being able to take criticism for it should be massively embarrassing for them. If I owned a team I would come out backing the Rangers statement.

People don’t like hearing the truth when they know they are wrong and will go out of their way to silence those trying to bring awareness to, and fix the problem.

I applaud the Rangers for standing up and making a statement, even if was uncomfortable to do so. Things won’t change until more have the courage to do so.

The league proscriptions and by-laws are probably unambiguous, and its response to this kind of action by the Rangers was a pretty easy and predictable decision.

I do agree the NHL should be embarrassed by the way it handled the Wilson incident, but it's on the players, too. Where is the Players' Association outrage here? There's unanimity on contract negotiations and demand for revenue sharing. Where's the basic requirement for workplace safety?

The league and the Players' Association were complicit in creating this monster. Now they get to live with it.

Hard to know whether the NHLPA brought it up because the previous CBA got rubber stamped pretty quickly without any drama. They could bring it up now I guess but the CBA runs through 2026 so it prob wouldn’t amount to much if they did. And also the dinosauric hockey culture of having players handle this thing themselves is deeply ingrained in all of these guys at a young age so that’s probably a factor as well.

But as of right now the NHL has all the power to issue meaningful punishment/suspensions and they don’t. The NHLPA doesn’t run the player safety dept.

One of astonishing things for me from the whole Tom Wilson incident was the game on Wednesday between the two teams. Just as the puck drops, the players engage in these pre-orchestrated "fights", one including Wilson himself. Quote below from Ryan Strome of New York:
"I definitely think we felt the need to take matters into our own hands a bit. I thought it was a great response. And hats off to them for answering the bell. They knew our frustration. We solved it and played the rest of the game."
And poof, all is well...really? "We solved it". Solved what? A goon assaults two opponents, then we have a half dozen slap dances two nights later and we're good? I've witnessed more legit heat during the countless "shoot matches" viewed over the decades in pro wrestling.
I love hockey and the talent and scoring and physical play. But incidents such as this one from last week are just ludicrous. The whole sideways sense of infraction and connected "justice" is just silly.

This is partly why amateur hockey at any level will always be more appealing to me. I mean it seems like what goes on in juniors is even worse because you've got kids feeling they have to prove themselves

What’s really sad is that anybody who watched Bruins vs Caps game 1 last night can clearly see...that along with being a THUG...Tom Wilson is a damn good hockey player. How the NHL looks the other way regarding that type of crap says a lot about their true motives regarding player safety...basically it boils down to...if the union doesn’t care, management doesn’t care either.
