CEC, Bemidji, Roseau, Grand Rapids, and Marshall are all opt-ups too, right?
I don't think Bemidji and Grand Rapids are. They have pretty big schools there. I don't know about CEC or Marshall though.
I looked it up. Cut-off line is 1252 enrollment. Bemidji's enrollment is 1216, Grand Rapids is 1006, CEC is about 1000 between the three, and Marshall is 258. So they could all be in Class A if they wanted.
That may be the # now, but wondering what it was when they originally went 2 classes? Maybe it was that. I know everyone says EGF should move up, but they are under 600 students.

EDIT: it’s weird that Bemidji is that low. My sister’s class of 2000 had ~400. Mine in EGF was 132.
Grand Rapids is opting up - they would be in Class A by enrollment.
Currently under construction.

Herrman.....
I’d be curious what the kids that play there think of playing in Single A. I know when St. Thomas was getting rightfully earned flack for playing Single A, the players I knew always wanted to play up.
I was about to say that with STA the players all made the choice to play there knowing it was a single A school. But I guess that is also true for half the Hermantown kids as well.
There are reasons other than just hockey to attend school. I get that if you're a hockey player that being associated with Hermantown or STA are part of your resume... but it's not quite that simple. I put most of the flack on the administrators/coach, not the players.

BTW someone is playing in the Bantam AA tournament as different people are in charge: https://www.minnesotahockey.org/page/sh ... a-2020-21-
Thought they always played up in the youth levels? Time to put the big boy pants on and move up.

Class AA state tournament seeds:
1. Eden Prairie (18-1-2)
2. Hill-Murray (18-2-0)
3. Lakeville South (18-0-2)
4. Maple Grove (20-1-0)
5. Andover (18-2-1)
Moorhead (13-7-1)
St. Thomas Academy (13-4-3)
Wayzata (13-5-2)

Not sure I agree with EP as #1 over South or Maple Grove, but it is what it is. Should be a helluva Tourney.

Looks pretty good to me. Not that it matters but, if South played EP’s schedule, doubt they’d have the record they do.

EGF/Warroad tied at 4, headed to OT.
Holy comeback, Batman!
Going to OT2 now.
EGF’s goalie has struggled. 2nd one he couldn’t glove it and gave up a rebound. 3rd one was a dump in from 10’ into the neutral zone. Struggling with rebounds all over.
EGF goalie is my brother. He for sure pulled a Jeff Frazee on the 3rd one...

Lol, well he buckled down after that one and played lights out in OT!

Is there a max number of players you can have on your “state” roster? If everyone gets cleared are there even enough roster spots for everyone or can you just wing it game to game?

It'll be interesting to watch the tourney this year. From the photos I see online, it appears most HS players either did not wear masks during play or did not wear them over nose and mouth.

With all of the attention being given to teams testing positive and possibly missing the tournament will we see more of the same or will players be wearing the masks correctly for the first time? And how will that affect those kids who aren't used to them?

It will certainly be a shame to make the tourney and have to miss it due to an asymptomatic positive test. Even more so to miss because of exposure, with no positive test.

Could be that Hermantown secretly believes their varsity is a AA team and their JV team is a A team.

I can't stand HM, but the situation really would be truly similar if Hill was in A. Don't kid yourself..... if Hermantown felt their JV couldn't compete at the A tourney they'd be fighting this too. I guess when you continue to choose to play A while having former Ban AA players on your JV roster you have that luxury......

It's hard to argue with safety. I always told coworkers to be thankful EH&S isn't worse than they are. You can't argue wearing a helmet at your desk isn't safer than not wearing a helmet.

Maybe that will change tonight with the Hermantown JV playing???

Every time I see a flashback to the St. Paul CC I am reminded what a horrible arena it was.
I know there were a lot of memories there - heck I have many great memories there - but it was a truly awful place to watch a game.

Day 1 is always brutal for "A".
Just looked up the Class A quarterfinal scores from last year:
9-3
5-2
7-1
11-2

Usually the first day of Class A isn't even worth watching.

I know there were a lot of memories there - heck I have many great memories there - but it was a truly awful place to watch a game.
With you there... Yes the clear boards were great. But the rest was crap.

Was there for the basketball tournament back in 1987... Much worse for BBall!!!
I was there, too. Other side of the arena.....some collection of misfits in an ugly blue beat the beloved Royals in the first game. :) That was my younger sister's Sr. year (two years behind me) and Woodbury was still small enough that you pretty much knew everyone so it was fun seeing those kids have success. Lynch was a monster for Jeff!

1983 was more fun when Woodbury capped its undefeated season, fun weekend.

2-3 years ago I think almost every game in the Single A tournament was decided by one or two goals. Very rare that happens.

Very dark and colorless. Living in West St. Paul, the Tourney moving from Met Center to the Civic Center in '76 was great for access, but horrible for atmosphere. I always looked at the Civic Center as the forerunner of the Metrodome: lots of functionality, with little or no aesthetics.

Interesting that in similar situations Hermantown figures it out while Hill-Murray threatens to sue.
Appears it's the parents filing suit.

Never underestimate the lengths some parents will go to, any sport, any level, any situation. :)
I am no lawyer, but I really don't understand the logistics of this... A restraining order against the group organizing and hosting the tournament you want to play in...? Could I ask for a restraining order against someone, but still go to their house for a party?

Once again, like we noticed with masks, the "privileged teams" don't have to follow the same rules that everyone else is expected to follow. Other teams figure out what to do, or on the Girls side just have to deal with it. Life isn't fair. Heaven forbid some poor kid from Hill-Murray learn that sometimes things don't always work out in your favor, even when, gosh, you just want it so bad.

I vaguely remember going to the Civic Center for some sort of educational field trip in like 5th grade, was it on the same exact plot that Xcel is on now? I’ve been to multiple concerts at Roy Wilkins and I still can’t figure out if it’s below Xcel or what? One time literally walked through a Wild/Blackhawks playoff game to get into a Queens of the Stone Age concert at Roy Wilkins.

I was just looking at the '90 tourney teams and stats last night on college basketball reference. I was too young to remember too much, but we ran into some legit NBA talent in the sweet 16 and then with GaTech.

The X is on the same plot the CC was on.

The Roy Wilkens Auditorium was originally called the St. Paul Auditorium and is east/north of The X and the same spot it's been since built. If you walk into the X entrance from the Rice Park side (past the Herbie Statue) the River Center convention center is on your left as you walk toward the X along the hall - there are windows so you can see the convention floor - and Roy Wilkens is to your right. If you look at the X on Google Maps it's easy to spot the roof of RWA.

Roy Wilkens is a the same elevation as the X. They used to move the boards from the CC to the Auditorium when it wasn't being used by the CC,I played a lot of squirt/pee-wee/bantam games there.

Also...and to bring it home....:)....what is now Roy Wilkens is the site of the original HS tourney.

Looking forward to watching Maple Grove tonight vs Andover at 8PM. Maple Grove has elite players, and the metro player of the year, Kyle Kukkonen who comitted to Mich Tech already. Andover should test them. Should be a good game.

Saw my first hockey games in the St Paul Auditorium. St Paul Saints (1950’s) coached by a young Fred Shero. Great atmosphere with 6-8 thousand people crammed together.

I watched countless numbers of high school sectional games at the Auditorium in the 70's and 80's. Terrific venue. Probably my two most memorable: the '75 section 4 semifinals with Sibley vs Johnson and South St. Paul vs Harding. Just jammed and the attendance was estimated at 10,000+. The other was the '82 section 4 final where Sibley upset South St. Paul in Phil Housley's final game with the Packers. Plus countless AWA wrestling cards over the years. Incredible memories.

Must be some happy folks with the result of the Hermantown game so far.
"Hard work will beat talent, if talent doesn't work hard"

This quote was written on the chalkboard in a lockeroom in the old Ralph Engelstad arena my Squirt team used the day after the Gophers used it and came into the game ranked #1 in the nation and lost 6-1 to a second rate Whioux team.

Overhead on SiouxSports.com - Why does every thread always turn into a "Gopher" thread? Is there a secret infatuation with them?

Hermantown's JV (basically) hasn't looked to bad. But the size and strength advantage dodge County has is killing them. Seems obvious that Gentry is just using class A as a launch pad to eventually move to AA.

Did H-M not have the JV option which Hermantown did, or did they choose not to explore that?
