Indiana is firing Archie Miller.
Miller has a $10 million buy out.

It’s time. I was a fan of him but the inconsistency was it for me.

8 years and 2 appearances in the NCAA tourney and 1 win. He did have some memorable wins and potential for 3 years in a row of drafted players.

Chip Scoggins had an interesting column yesterday. He interviewed 4 coaches who follow the MN program and got their thoughts on the program, the job, the arena, and other insights.

Now being reported that Pitino is officially done at Minnesota.
It's unofficially official that Pitino and the UofMN have agreed to part ways.

In perusing the comment section on this article (bad mistake I know), I found someone who claims the reason the basketball program struggle is because the U “hangs their hat” on the hockey program. They state it’s impossible for basketball to survive when the hockey program is as good as it is. It all makes zero sense. Just remember next time you’re wondering why the U doesn’t promote hockey more or have ticket deals, there is someone out there who thinks hockey gets too much attention and it’s hurting the rest of the sports.

I personally wish the best for Richard. I've really enjoyed his personality off the court. He seems like a pretty good guy (even moreso considering his dad seems like kinda of a sleezeball).

I’m really disheartened that Pitino couldn’t turn the corner. I really liked him and didn’t want to see him go. I get it, it was time, but man this one was hard for me.

(Looks at New Mexico's zero NCAA appearances since 2014)

I don't think there's too much excitement to go around in that fanbase

They're almost definitely going to take a step back.
Carr is probably going to try the NBA. Liam may transfer again considering his uncle just got let go. We've got two pretty decent centers lined up for 2021 that should help with our post depth but without Carr and potentially Mashburn we don't have a PG on roster.

🤷‍♂️ he declared for the draft last year before returning to school. Would expect the same move again this season. If he doesn't like the coach I could see him going the Amir Coffey route.

I guess I'm in the minority that it would not be such a shock for him to leave? There is a minor legacy component, the TC is a hotbed of local recruiting talent, I like Fayetteville plenty (went there about 15-20 times total over the years) but come on the Twin Cities > Fayetteville, the U is proving they will legitimately support athletics, the BT > SEC for bb, they play a legit schedule instead of just loading up on directional Universities, every game is televised many nationally (not necessarily more so than ARK but still it's not going backwards) all in all I think people woefully underestimate why the U could be an attractive destination. I mean if UW and IA can have legit bb teams why not UM?

I don't think the U is a bad job, but we have to be honest about what it looks like from the outside. As far as I know his wife is a southern girl and leaving a P5 job that will likely pay him more (especially after they renegotiate) just seems far fetched. Arkansas is a 3 seed, right? We haven't sniffed anything like that since Clem...

ARK had been a very average program since Nolan Richardson and I think people way overthink previous failures in evaluating a job opening. Did Pitino fail because the school didn't support him? Pay him or his assistants enough? Invest enough in facilities? Because the arena wouldn't fill when the team did well? Because he didn't have legit Div I talent in his own backyard to recruit from?

I don't care what it looks like from the outside if the outside doesn't see the big picture, and you know damn well Mark Coyle is going to present all that the U could offer to someone willing to take it. A coach worth their salt thinks they can win anywhere anyway.

I'm fairly certain that Arkansas can list some of the Walton family as boosters, so anyone that wants Musselman better hope they get knocked out of the tournament early. Otherwise, he will be in for a big raise when Coyle comes calling. :D

I have quite a bit of faith in Coyle after he snagged PJ, but the Musselman link just has that Minnesota connection thing going where people think he's one of ours. The time to get him here likely passed.

So now that's the answer - Sam Walton? Weird then because UA football has been a dumpster fire since Houston Tugnutt. And as someone that has spent significant time at both the Fayetteville and Little Rock campuses it is nothing the write home about. And please the local AR bb h.s. talent is pretty non-existent.

The Gophers intentionally waited for Pitino to be hired before he was let go to free up money or a potential buyout.

The SEC is without question less attractive than the B1G for basketball.

None of this guarantees anything, but good Lord if he isn't hired it will be about something other than 'desirable destination".

I would be thrilled if the "U" could land Musselman, but man, it's gonna be tough. However, if he's the #1 choice then throw everything you have at him. You can't be turned down until you make the effort.

Minnesota Golden Gophers: Is Gopher Basketball a Sleeping Giant?

The writer must be a fan of my work.
First and foremost, is the recruiting base. The state of Minnesota puts out an inordinate amount of high-major talent every year. There are not dozens of power 5 caliber players every year, but for a state this size Minnesota puts out a high number of power 5 claiber players per capita. And I’m not just talking about the elite talent.
But there is so much local talent out there, in our back yard. Theo John and Dawson Garcia are both playing great basketball for Marquette and were attainable here. McKinley Wright is a likely 1st or 2nd All-Pac 10 team point guard who really should have been a Gopher. Kerwin Walton was attainable before he blew up late in the summer and fell in love with North Carolina. Landing one of Zeke Nnaji or Tyrell Terry, both of whom are getting minutes in the NBA this year after playing in the Pac 12. Jericho Sims is a key big man for a very good Texas team. And a couple kids who have had some success at Wisconsin should be mentioned as well.
And let’s not forget the local kids who did stay. Daniel Oturu and Amir Coffey found their way on to NBA rosters. Gabe Kalscheur, despite his shooting woes, is having a really good Gopher career. Even a guy like Jarvis Johnson, who was a coveted 4-star guard before medical issues ended his career abruptly.
Secondly, this is a Big Ten program. Which may not sound like much, but this is a fantastic conference. Kids who want to play at the highest level may only have so many opportunities to do so. This is not a program who should be losing kids to Marquette (back to recruiting locally) when we are playing in the best conference in college basketball.

This is a selling point and one that does matter.

Next up on the list of things that make Minnesota an attractive job as well as an attractive landing spot for recruits are the facilities.
SEC or B1G basketball? Fayetteville freaking Arkansas? Local h.s. talent? Everything else is at worst a push for Minnesota. I am not saying he wants to leave nor that he will, but outright dismissing the idea is illogical.
Currently under construction.

Well it's not like people expected him back. If he's not good enough for the NBA, why not go somewhere for one year that has a chance to do damage in the tournament.

Porter Moser would be a great choice, especially if Musselman is not possible. I am a Drake undergrad alumni and I have watched Loyola play several times over the past few years, they are not a fluke. His teams play very hard, make smart plays, and are the sort that other teams hate to play against.

Oregon mopping the court with #2 seed Iowa right now. 2021 NCAA Tourney? Big 10 = Big Dump. If I'm Coyle, I go to WHOEVER the #1 candidate is and say "Look at the Tourney this year. You can make this program relevant both in conference and nationally immediately". Perhaps the next coach has already beaten a Big 10 team in the last couple days. I've grown so tired of hearing "Oh, that style won't work in the Big 10" over the years. BS. Top flight coach and top players, you can go out and play however best suits you. This is the chance to shoot for the sky for this program. Do they get their top choice? Maybe not. But there's no reason not to get a terrific coach in here.

Wow, please forgive my earlier pontificating. That's about as underwhelmed as I've been in a LONG time. A move that's certain to lend instant credibility to the program in the eyes of recruits. Vintage "Dollars and Cents" decision that perpetuates mediocrity.

I dunno. I don't hate it.
He can recruit. He can identify talent. He can sell the program as somebody who was already a player here and has seen the Barn at it's best.
Everyone I've seen that is connected to AAU hoops raves about him.
Will be interested to see who he brings in as assistants.
