Re: Gopher Basketball 2020-2021
I watched Michigan & Maryland play for a bit last night. Michigan is terrific. Very athletic, deep & competitive all over the floor. Maryland is a notch below where they're accustomed to be.....so, still pretty good.
I'd be surprised if the Gophers can hang with either team.

Re: Gopher Basketball 2020-2021
Gophers bounced back from a disappointing game against Wisconsin to basically dominate the game against #25 Ohio State.
They led the entire game and pulled away in the second half to win by 17.
Next up is a very tough matchup on Wednesday @ Michigan.

Re: Gopher Basketball 2020-2021
Michigan will be their 5th straight game against ranked opponents?
Edit...LOL I just looked at their schedule. They follow the Michigan game with games against Iowa (again) and Michigan (again). That’ll be 7 straight against ranked teams. Quite a stretch!
Re: Gopher Basketball 2020-2021
I'll give them a pass with the poor performances at Illinois & Wisconsin.....Illinois was a wake-up call that it was time to put on the B1G boy pants & Wisconsin was after two home wins against significant opponents. I don't think they can win at Michigan or Iowa - two teams with legit Final 4 aspirations. However, they need to avoid the Illinois/Wisconsin faceplants......if they can, that'll be progress.
This team has the potential, at best, to finish 5th in the B1G. That might earn them a NCAA 4/5 seed. Crazy-tough league.....really fun to watch.

Re: Gopher Basketball 2020-2021
As of a week ago their schedule had 8 ranked opponents to start conference play. I assume that has changed since the rankings have changed, but yeah the conference is a gauntlet this season for sure.Bertogliat wrote: ↑Mon Jan 04 7:12 amMichigan will be their 5th straight game against ranked opponents?

When I looked yesterday there were 9 teams in the Big Ten ranked in the top 25.
Wisconsin 6
Iowa 10
Rutgers 14
Illinois 15
Michigan 16
MSU 17
Northwestern 20
Minnesota 22
OSU 25

Re: Gopher Basketball 2020-2021
Still 7 ranked B1G teams with OSU and NU falling out this week. So, yea, it's going to be a tough go for most of the B1G with half of it ranked in the Top 25 at any given time.
The next 10 days is tough with 2 on the road (IA and MI) and all 3 top ranked opponents.

Gophers in a battle in Iowa today. They were down 39-37 at half but started the second half making 1/14 shots as Iowa extended their lead near 20. They're clawing back now and are within 5, but Carr picked up his fourth foul on a pretty dumb play so he's on the bench.

This team has a serious mental block on the road. Their road losses have been blowouts.

Really really nice win for the Gophers. Had a real poor start shooting the ball but the defense was great all game and really locked Michigan down. Robbins was on fire today.

11 players/coaches with COVID at Nebraska. That feels like a pretty big deal for a basketball team.

Re: Gopher Basketball 2020-2021
Gophers really struggling with a mediocre Maryland team. Maryland defense is giving Minnesota fits and the Gophers are having their worst FT shooting game of the year (10/18).
Seems like every time the Gophers start to get something going Maryland his a three or there is a ticky tack foul to stop game flow. They're 4/18 from 3pt range too.

Re: Gopher Basketball 2020-2021
Maryland's athletic line-up was trouble as they disrupted MN's offense.....lots of overplay on first pass situations & controlled the boards, too. MD is the most surprising/disappointing in B1G thus far at 3-6. When you can win at Illinois, Wisconsin & Minnesota - all teams with good big men & interior play - with an undersized team, that's a good D scheme. I suspect they'll finish ahead of MN.
This was a game to see if MN could sneak into the top 4 in B1G......there's still a chance but a 5-8 finish is about the best they can hope for.

Re: Gopher Basketball 2020-2021
With about 7 minutes left in the 1st half, Brandon Johnson goes to the hole. He makes the bucket and there is contact. What does Johnson do, he yells, "and one n****r." There are no fans. It was rather easy to hear. I was so stunned I immediately rewound the play to be sure. Yup, no doubt. Then, both announcers address it and apologize for the language. I find this behavior deplorable. There is no place and no reason for this.

Another gophers basketball team that can't handle success. Two lopsided losses now to unranked conference teams.

In fairness, Purdue is probably going to be ranked next week (they were "receiving votes" this week and had won 4/5 with their only loss to Michigan.streakygopher wrote: ↑Sat Jan 30 8:34 pmAnother gophers basketball team that can't handle success. Hopefully they make the Tourney, though that's a task made more difficult by not even being competitive on the road.

Inexcusable. Not a single road win and now 12-7. This team is so inconsistent.

I like how he took the foul and then just walked off the floor knowing he was going to be subbed. Nothing worse than a guy who tries to act surprised when the coach yanks him.
Good news is they’re up by 19.

Lead down to 7 without Robbins because they have missed 7362 consecutive 3s and everyone refuses to drive the lane even when there is nobody in front of them.

Re: Gopher Basketball 2020-2021
In fairness, they've only played 3 other unranked (at the time) conference opponents. Purdue is now ranked and Rutgers was ranked as high as #11 at one point a few weeks ago before they lost 4 or 5 in a row (and they have now won 4 in a row and ranked #25). Pretty sure Maryland and Nebraska are the only two conference teams they've played who have not been ranked.Bertogliat wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08 10:14 pmThat is quite interesting. And embarrassing.

I mean not everything is embarrassing. It is what it is and there are so many variables with young kids. Athletics are one of the few things involving kids where everyone knows the score after every test. Clearly Pitino is on thin ice, he had his contract renewed in 2017 and nothing since. Coyle is an AD who likes to renew coaches pretty often if he likes what he sees and hasn't done that with Pitino or Motzko... read into it as deep as you'd like to read into it.Bertogliat wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08 10:14 pmThat is quite interesting. Re: Gopher Basketball 2020-2021
All I am saying is (in any sport) if you're capable to playing with and beating the top teams, it's embarrassing to lose to the bad teams, even once. To have such a large disparity in home/road win% and to lose to bad teams (all of them, LOL) after beating the top teams, sometimes significantly is just mental. That to me is embarrassing.Vegoe wrote: ↑Tue Feb 09 1:04 pmI mean not everything is embarrassing. It is what it is and there are so many variables with young kids. The only "bad" team they've played in conference is Nebraska and they beat them by almost 20 despite their two best players playing a combined 33 minutes.Bertogliat wrote: ↑Tue Feb 09 1:46 pmAll I am saying is (in any sport) if you're capable to playing with and beating the top teams, it's embarrassing to lose to the bad teams, even once. Maryland, the other "bad" team they lost to is 4 spots behind Minnesota in Kenpom and #44 in the nation (Nebraska is #128).
Their other conference losses are to #22 and #24 in Kenpom.
I don't see how any of those losses are embarrassing on paper. The way they got beat against Maryland (by not being able to beat the constant double teams by making outside shots) was frustrating and falling apart in the last 10 minutes against Purdue was very frustrating (because Purdue made everything they shot in rhe second half and Minnesota couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat), but losing @ Purdue is not embarrassing. Losing @ Rutgers by 4 is not embarrassing, IMO. YMMV

Liam just picked up his 4th foul with about 4 minutes left down by 5.
There goes any chance we have since the team is once again shooting 20% from three. Purdue is going to feed the post on every possession with Edey and Williams knowing Robbins can't risk a foul. They've already basically been doing it all game.

Robbie Hummel does a great job as an analyst. Especially impressive given his probable homerism when calling Purdue games. Really like him.

That was great defense, especially considering he got tripped up early in the inbound set.

Re: Gopher Basketball 2020-2021
Two quick fouls on Liam (again) so he sat basically the whole first half and Maryland took full advantage of Minnesota having no post presence to make the lead almost insurmountable at half.

Re: Gopher Basketball 2020-2021
Wow, just wow. While the on-court play was tough to watch, listening to the play by play was worse. The thing that really annoyed me was the consistent use of, "takes a long three" or "with a long three". It was no less than 10 times. Not one of those threes were taken more than 2 or 3 feet behind the line. Most of the shots he was referencing, by definition, would be short threes. There was not a long three in the bunch. I've never heard of either of the two fellas doing the game. For the first time this year, I could really tell these fellas were sitting at home, not the arena. There was a foul early in the second half that they completely ignored. No mention of it, or the stoppage of play, whatsoever. They didn't mention players by name on several occasions. It was bad all around. 8-28 from three while giving up 10-20 on threes.
