A loss in week one won't completely dash our national title hopes as long as we run the table from there. How's THAT for optimism!

Nice couple of pickups on the OL. Shaw played for Sanford at Utah State and we got a former USC commit. Good size and help in the line

Would they name him if there wasn’t interest on Fleck’s side?

Do those search firms actually reach out to potential candidates?

I assumed they were mainly just evaluating the program's standing in the NCAA, and simply identifying the best possible candidates.

Better question is why would PJ want to go? That program is a disaster and has been since Peyton Manning left basically. That, combined with all the sanctions they are facing and the completely unrealistic expectations from their fan base? No thanks.

Unless they're rolling out 10 million per year plus, that would be a hard sell for a head coach at a P5 school.

Disappointing, but not really a surprise. Wonder if he'll end up a Cornhusker and that disaster of a program.

College football recruiting is the wild west. It feels like as soon as a player commits, his recruitment has just begun. Other teams swoop in. Make bigger promises. Then when kids get on campus, half of them bolt for a different program. It's a wonder the teams with the most resources are luring kids away from other programs.

Yeah, in football especially it feels like this. They should call them verbal preferences instead of verbal commitments.

I haven’t heard any $ bantered around for Fleck going to Tennessee until I heard Doogie on Channel 5 mention 7 years / $49 million. Put him in top 5 paid coaches. That’s not out of the realm of possibility.

If Fleck leaves for TN he only cares about money and was never going to stay here more than 5 years. There is nothing appealing about that role and he has no ties to TN or the SEC.

I personally would be surprised if he leaves here but I'm not 100% confident in that either. The AD Tennessee just hired has made a pretty good reputation for himself.

Agreed. Has it really ever been? Closest is maybe in the mid-80s to late 90s, but even there, you're looking at 15 years with 5 conference championships and 1 national championship.

Right, that 15 year period in question ended one year after Peyton was gone when they won the National Championship.

I did see a report from 247Sports (referring to a Chip Scoggins article, IIRC) that PJ had indicated he was not interested in the Tennessee job.

It's been kinda interesting to see the Vols fans talking about Fleck on twitter. Seems like half think he's trash and would be a terrible hire and want Lane Kiffin back (🤣), others think he'd be the perfeft hire.
The meltdowns people have had when other fan bases call it either a lateral move or a step down from MN to Tennessee have been fun to read.

Edit: found the tweet

Since we were talking recently about de-commits/transfers, I saw this article from Ryan Burns that was pretty interesting.

Looks like PJ hasn't really let anything major get away. Best one is probably the kid who led Texas in tackles? Other than that, nobody really being a star anywhere else from what I can tell.

I looked yesterday at the same thing and out of all the players, most left during the transition year which is normal and none of them amounted to anything. From there forward there is the player you mention above and one other defender that had some decent numbers, but on the whole the rest had little to no success post-transfer.

With the late signing date, GOphers signing a couple of transfers and PWO, but couple with Gopher/MN ties below. We got a a WR transfer and OL transfer, plus signed a OL who was previously committed to USC. Filling some holes on the DL and couple kickers too.

I like the changes as I like playing WI as the last game of the season. Hoping they allow fans in some fashion too. The opener against OSU is killer, but good NC and ending the season at Iowa, Indiana and then home against WI.... tough stretch! Would be great to be able to head to CO in person too!

My counter argument would be how awful the Gophers look early in the season. That first game last year against a bad Michigan team sticks out.

What arguement?
I merely threw out a possible scenario. The 1st game is when I have seen upsets, see App State / Mich, NDSU / Iowa & the Bill Snyder era K-State, come to mind. Spend 9 months of off season conditioning, spring ball, and Aug training camp pointing for that 1st game & just go play the game.

Edit: Last year was a very atypical season. I would wait to see how they look at the spring game before any serious speculation

Didn’t the Gophs (and most other teams) always have 20+ out with covid almost every week? I would just throw all of last year away.

I remember thinking last year that I would be surprised if a lot of HC’s got canned from a teams performance last year. Everything was turned on it’s head.

If the O-line works out and the Gophers can run the ball and limit OSU possessions? Who knows?
Keep it close and see what happens.
My counter argument would be how awful the Gophers look early in the season. That first game last year against a bad Michigan team sticks out.
This is true. Even a couple of years ago when the Gophers were riding high, they had some squeakers in the non conference portion of the schedule. And we no longer have Winfield to save our arses.

Interesting read on Coach Fleck and his on field assistants salaries for the 21-22 cycle. Of note, this is the first year Fleck has retained all of his coaches so we head into 2021 with strong stability in the coaching staff.

Also of note, IF this article is accurate, only one coach did NOT take the voluntary 10% salary reduction.

And, our coaches are still paid too low in comparison to the other B1G schools including most of the West.

🤣🤣 When I was in Vegas for a softball tournament, Ochocinco was doing a Bleacher Report thing. We went to the casino (IIRC it was Planet Hollywood) not knowing he was there but we wanted to watch Vikings vs. Washington on Thursday Night Football. They were doing a bunch of football related games like a mini game show for some cash prizes.
Between games he'd come back to the seating area and hang out.
I was really surprised how willing he was to just hang around with a bunch of rubes, especially mostly intoxicated rubes. He was super cool.

The new season hasn’t started. It’s almost as if we’re in some weird off season type thing.

Unless something changed/changes yes. He opted out of 2020 for health/COVID reasons but was always planning to be back.

Don't think this was posted, but the top rated Gopher recruit in the 2020 class has entered the transfer portal.

From what I read too, there was some potential eligibility issues and may not have been cutting academically.

Michigan State must not think so. This is a potentially big loss.

And tickets are gone (and this needs a Gopher Football 2021 thread).
Tried for 4 could only get 2, but just excited to get to go.
