This night has grown into on of my favorites over the years. Usually get off work early and meet friends down on campus before the season opener. The last handful of years have even included wins. I completely understand why that’s not happening tonight, it’s just hitting a little harder than other events have.

Maybe the reports of heart issues tied to COVID-19 in B1G athletes have him thinking maybe the BIG is handling it right?

Whatever the reason I am glad he reconsidered.

I read that 11 former Gophers made 53-man rosters. Obviously bigger programs would laugh at that but that sounds like a high number for our recent history and seeing that number rise can't hurt recruiting.

Maybe it’s a good thing the Gophers wouldn’t be playing BYU. Either they were really good or Navy was really bad or both.

It's definitely the most in a while. Having four out of 5 rookies on active rosters (if you count Kamal before he was put on IR) and the fifth on a practice squad helps.

I hope Bateman rerhinks his decision to opt out in light of a fall season.

I'm just curious as to what has changed since Kevin Warren first cancelled/delayed the season. He seemed pretty emphatic and said that his decision would not be revisited but here it is being revisited.

I'm not against it but upon first glance it makes Warren look like a paper tiger.

Complete shot in the dark: My guess is for they got a lot of pressure from ABC/ESPN - advertising dollars and programming. I am sure there are a myriad of reasons but I bet ABC flexed its muscle some.

After seeing video after video of college kids partying it up without masks or distancing I don't see this working, but I am happy to have them give it a go. The deeper teams will prevail since they have a "minimum" 21 day quarantine (or at least time away from team) for any player/coach/manager that tests positive.

It should be interesting if we have a few key coaches test positive.

I would bet some of it has to do with the increased availability of the rapid tests that pro sports teams are using.

Sounds like that isn't an option anymore as he hired an agent already. I think Burns tweeted about it.

LSU coach made it sound like the majority of his team has/had it.

This is 100% speculation but considering the level of forethought of the average kid that age you wonder if they had "covid parties" in advance so that by the time a season starts they'll be in the clear?

Not making any statements about the severity of the disease but kids...

The last I saw from Texas Tech was there were 75 players who have had the virus. There’s like 120 kids on a college football team? Yikes.

Seems suspicious enough to believe they've intentionally contracted the virus to allow them to play after they recover.

I eagerly await the class action lawsuits in a few years against the schools when some of these kids have the heart problems and suffer life long problems or just up and die in a gym or on field.

I can already hear the late night lawyer commercials now.

Even playing DIII and even playing in the late '80s and early '90s we signed some pretty long waivers about not holding the school liable for injury up to and including death. I'm not sure how illness would play into that. If you break your neck on a tackle it's hard to say you actually broke your neck in a classroom, but what about contracting COVID?

You generally cannot waive what you don't understand. Since even the best doctors in the world have little clue on this, what about a college athlete? Or even a parent of a HS athlete?

The availability of $15 daily antigen tests is the game changer. If they were stuck trying to do the PCR testing for $100-$150/piece, then they were in trouble. One, it's a lot more expensive to do testing and two, the turnaround times on those was a factor.

Plenty of pressure from FOX/BTN to make football happen, lots of pressure from big money donors who think covid-19 is an overblown threat... but the testing and cardiac clearance protocols were the difference between cancelling and revisiting.

RT @PeteThamel: Source: Minnesota star WR Rashod Bateman wants to play for Gophers in 2020. He’s back on campus and enrolled as a full-time student. He’s signed with agent and finds himself in the same scenario as other high-profile players around the country.

RT @PeteThamel: Bateman and other stars wanting to return will need clearance from the NCAA for the unique circumstances of this time. Bateman opted out in early August amid the lack of clarity of the season and uncertain health environment.

Making no judgements on him or anyone else and hindsight is whatever, why was there such a rush to get an agent in the first place? Were they going to run out if they waited?

Would love to see this work out!

Yes, this. Too add, the turnaround time was a big deal because it eliminates the need for contact tracing. Before, if one guy tested positive, it was basically wiping out an entire position group who would have to quarantine for a couple days until they could get tests back. See the first game of the season where Austin Peay lost by a touchdown because all three of their long snappers had to sit out and then they ended up sailing two snaps over the punter's head. The potential to lose huge chunks of a team is even worse once you start playing and the whole team has to be together rather than just working in specific position groups. Rapid testing means a much smaller percentage of players will have to sit out.

Right or wrong, there was some pretty harsh criticism toward the college players whom opted out by a lot of the draft gurus out there, McShay included. As a Gopher fan, I really hope I/we get to see Bateman in Maroon and Gold one more season.

To me the reason kids would sign with an agent would be to get an "advance" on future earnings that would be used for personal training & nutrition at one of the specialized places that are used before the draft and / combines to improve one's metrics.

I saw an attorney on Twitter say that Big 10 players who opted out for the NFL might get some sympathy from NCAA since Kevin Warren was very emphatic that season wasn't going happen. If Warren had not made this statement, this attorney felt that NCAA might not give sympathy.

It'd be difficult for NFL teams to grade him as a draft prospect after sitting out a whole season, especially when other high end WRs were/are playing. Could theoretically slide him down the board into the second round if other guys splash and he just has workout tapes to show this season.
That would be my guess, at least.

I agree Beauner, I would also add he will get knocked for not having film without Tyler Johnson. I would think without playing he will be a 2nd rounder at best.

If the Gophers are going to continue turning the corner, this looks like another favorable schedule from which they should be able to take the division. The game at uw would likely be the decider again.

So first we’re questioning why Bateman would opt out and then we’re questioning why he would come back? This dude can’t make anyone happy and why should he try. How about he does what he thinks is best at that time and doesn’t give a crap what Todd McDick or anyone else thinks.

Kind of a weird angle to approach this. "We" assumes one collective mind which doesn’t exist and who would be displeased by him choosing to return? Even when he left i think must were happy for him while naturally being sad to see him go. A conversation around him wanting to return is pretty normal.

It's impossible to keep track.
Who is gone?
Who is hurt/opted out?

Basically, how close to 100% are the Gophers at the moment?

I assume this means Purdue and others also received waivers on their requests to return players.

Rondale Moore already had. A top OL at Michigan is back. Not sure about others who opted out.

I think Bateman was the main person sitting out. But still gone are a lot of starters from the D last year and TJ.

Lost a TON on D looks like.

I thought there were question marks still about Dunlap and Faalele

Dunlap had put his name in the transfer portal but withdrew it the next day.

Right, so still gone from last year. The question wasn't clear if they meant in general from LY or changes since COVID. The team has lot a lot of starters and the offense is mainly the same, outside of TJ and losing a RB. Dunlap and Faelle are still in as far as I have seen, but Dunlap entered the portal and came back and Daniel was hurt last season and still recovering from what i have seen.

They have a 6 man rotation on the OL w/ the undersized but hyper aggressive John Micheal Schmitz rotating in on the interior 3.
I do have a fondness for undersized guys on the OL to make up with nasty what they lack is size, for some reason. 🤔

I think the team is exactly what we expected it to be with Rashod's return. No other unanticipated loses or injuries. There's some questions on defense given the losses we knew were coming. TJ should be offset by keeping Bateman and having Autumn-Bell plus any up and comers.

O-Line should be only better if everyone stays healthy. QB should be great if Morgan can maintain that level of play.

Former Gopher Tyler Johnson is the leading receiver for the TNF game in the first half. First four catches of his career.

Gophers first game set for Primetime at 630 against Michigan for the Jug. Weird to be playing Michigan first, but should be fun!

In addition to starting the season in Primetime, the #Gophers will also play three Friday games this year - at Maryland and at home against Purdue and Iowa.

Really? They have the entire line back, don't they? I know Dunlap was going to transfer but is back and Faelele was hurt, but practicing.

Gameday without the crowd will seem less significant. But, cool we’re only the 5th school to get back to back appearances of Gameday (really, the 4th, OSU has twice).
