Tom Herman out at Texas. 4 year record of 32-18. They are targeting Steve Sarkisian to take over.

Alabama is a really good team ....but.....OSU you do have to cover and tackle #6 / D. Smith a little.

While I admit I did not hang on every play, I couldn't tell if Mac Jones was Tom Brady-like (I am not saying he is Tom Brady, but Tom Brady-like) make a decision and make accurate pass or just 'Bama's receivers were just so wide open.

Ryan Day said it was one thing to have a plan, another to execute it. While I am sure there was all sorts of schemes for Smith, it was like he was an after thought he was so wide open at times. It will be interesting in the NFL when he plays against players who are bigger and faster and know how to get their hands on him. I do wish him well, seems like a good attitude.

Yeah he pretty much ran free.
@coondog brings up the NFL. He will certainly play there but life will be different for him. I see him in the slot, alot.😉 That way it is harder for the NFL corners to knock him around.

As long as Saban retains his health and fire for coaching, Alabama will remain THE dominant force in college football. They won't win the national championship every year, but will always be right there and a constant presence in whatever format (4 teams, 8 teams) the playoff takes. Saban doesn't get every player he wants, but he gets every TYPE of player he needs. I would imaging he and his staff have recruiting down to a science at this point, between on field talent evaluation and in person visits and interviews. I can understand how Sarkisian would have had trouble saying "No" to the Texas HC job, but I don't see any great move to national prominence under him. Sounds as though there was an agreement in principle for him to take over Alabama when Saban steps down. That would be a tough act to follow, but there's an incredible framework in place for continued success and until then he could just reload each year as the offensive coordinator. Obviously there are a number of terrific programs, but Alabama is the clear gold standard.

LoL!!!

12-16 is too many. That's up to 4 more weeks of football for some teams. These are student athletes and they are already being strechted as it is now. Even at 8 it 3 more weeknds for the final two teams.

Ditto - I like 8 too. Makes too much sense for them to do it though - that’s how it works, right?

I don't particularly like 6 in this. Don't like adding a round of byes in.

8 is the right number, and my thought had always been the same as what Gator was saying: Each Power 5 champion, the highest rated non-P5 champion, then 2 at-large. The at-large teams will almost certainly be the 2nd best team from a couple of the P5s or Notre Dame.

I think they have struggled to find four. Once they find four teams then maybe expand. This is unlikely to be like basketball. There will be alot of 63-20 games if they go to twelve.

Just don't want to see the "Notre Dame" rule from the BCS era. If ND finished in the top 8 of the BCS standings, they were automatically given a BCS bowl. I don't want to see ND getting any special perks to make the playoffs.

I realize having byes isn't ideal, my original thoughts on going with 6 was mostly when it seemed that 4 or even 8 would never happen. Now that expansin is likely 8 is ideal, 12 is unnecessary.

I definitely don't want to see them getting in at #8, unless somehow all 7 ahead of them are already in. Chances are if they're #7, everyone ahead of them is already in, and that would certainly be the case if they end up 6 or higher.

So how do you address that some teams will get two more games than most other programs? This had to be an advantage for teams like Alabama in recruiting.

Is there contractual language when teams join conferences that the conference can boot out a school if they aren’t a good fit? Like say Rutgers. Or boot them if they do something egregious. Assuming if there is it would be an expensive exit.

No idea how dumb of a question this is. Just curious.

The B1G will only take AAU members right?

If so, KSU is out, and it's KU and ISU, assuming they want to get it even and go with 16

My understanding is that the B1G conference onboarding process for Nebraska, Rutgers and Maryland did have a number of conditions each would need to meet before they would become a member, and if they defaulted in those conditions after time the B1G could halt or undo the process.

Not a bad question at all, but just framed the situation a little differently.

On current topic, not sure what KU or ISU brings to the B1G, honestly. Good schools, but KU has a ton of NCAA violations hanging over their head in basketball and is worse than Rutgers in football, and ISU secures only the TV market south of Albert Lea and north of Des Moines. And I like the Cyclones, but they add little that the conference doesn't already have.

Good schools, but KU has a ton of NCAA violations hanging over their head in basketball and is worse than Rutgers in football, and ISU secures only the TV market south of Albert Lea and north of Des Moines. And I like the Cyclones, but they add little that the conference doesn't already have.
Well, KU brings the Kansas City TV market, right?

Plus, a solid blue blood basketball school

The B1G would likely add KU and OKST. KU gives you the Kansas City Market, which isn't much and some more national basketball exposure, NCAA has really no ability to hand down probation now with NIL, etc. OSU would gives you OK City and Tulsa would be nice additions. Possibly they would be intrigued by TCU, but they wouldn't bring you much in the Dallas area, possibly more recruting exposure in TX though? But your now going against two SEC teams in TX. My guess would be KU and OKST, if they don't want in, keep it at 14.

Football Revenue > (Basketball Revenue + All other Athletic Department Revenue)

I would be surprised if the B1G wants to take on a school facing NCAA sanctions in their only blue-blood sport, which doesn't happen to be football, just to help them out.

Oklahoma State doesn't meet the academic profile by a long shot.

Put differently, if the B1G wanted KU, KU would already be in the B1G. It wasn't as though KU would rather have been in the Big XII. Neither school will add more revenue to the B1G than it is already gaining, so I think both are DOA.

I think the B1G looks to break up the ACC and pull in UNC and Georgia Tech, then create a scheduling alliance with the PAC-12. You from pull a wholly different market and make your league "national" in nature, and kneecap the ACC also-- where Duke, Notre Dame, UVA also ask to join thereafter so as to stave off a merger with the remnants of the Big XII. You get better basketball that way and jump into a geographic market important for influence and recruiting.

But remember the B1G doesn't have to do anything right now. I think we will likely just stand pat, but perhaps deepen the tie with the PAC-12.

Then again, who knows what the B1G does any more.

I don't recall where but remember hearing, could have been just a rumor, that BTN makes more money on bouncy ball than football, tons more games and advertising spots, plus most of the "good football games" are on ESPN, ABC or Fox. So if that is at all accurate, KU makes a lot of sense. Don't get me wrong I don't think KU is some golden goose just that KU and OKST are they only additions from BIg XII that can add good revenues.

I'll standby that NCAA has been so kneecapped they don't even attempt to sanction a school right now. Then again NCAA does a lot of crazy stuff and may look at this as no better than than to flex.

You have a lot more faith in Kevin Warren pulling off that coup than I.

The BTN alone does not dictate TV/media revenue for the conference.

For Football, that is generally divided into 1st tier/2nd tier/3rd tier. ESPN and FOX jointly pays $$$$$$ for the first and second tier rights to B1G games, while the BTN gets the right to the third tier games. Those 1st and 2nd tier football games are more than $440M of the estimated $700M the B1G gets annually from all TV monies.

3rd tier football, some basketball (CBS also pays some for 1st tier basketball in the B1G), hockey, wrestling, and everything else make up the rest from the BTN.

So while basketball may be more profitable from the BTN perspective, it is football that continues to drive the bus here. And it really isn't close.

The Athletic reported yesterday that the B1G expects to obtain $50M per school from a TV perspective. Does adding Kansas bring in at least $65M in additional revenue annually (enough to pay for itself plus more for every current member)? If not, they are not in the conversation. I don't think adding a powerful Jayhawk basketball team alone will add that amount annually to the TV deal.

(And I disagree on their ability to sanction. They may not be willing to--See UNC-- but they retain the legal right to do so. The NIL and Alston case both reaffirm that the NCAA retains right to control athletic activities of student athletes and member institutions)

One thought that hasn't been brought up-- might the B1G add KU and ISU as affiliate members in basketball (like Notre Dame in hockey and Johns Hopkins in Lacrosse)?

Could get the best of all worlds that way in the B1G.

What conference is going to take KU if they don't get basketball? MAC?

Well since their new FBHC tore the MAC up for a couple years after having Wisconsin - Whitewater become dominant in D-3 & winning a bunch of championships against Mount Union, they likely will see what happens.

LSU is going to require proof of vaccination or a negative test within 72 hrs. of kickoff to enter Tiger Stadium.

BADgers way overrated to start the season and Mertz obviously not a D1 level QB without a high end running game to cover for him.

This might be the first time in a long time, WI doesn’t have a top end RB. Their D will be solid again but will be interesting.

Beliema will be exposed just like he was at Arkansas. His only success was at wisconSIN (under Alvarez guidance). Though fat Berry has and still runs that football program since he “quit coaching”.

I will be willing to give my report card on Iowa after next weekend. Iowa looked good yesterday and I will agree that the defense looked better than the offense. Indiana didn't really show much to back up their ranking, I think the pollsters gave them more credit from last year. If Iowa solidly beats the Clowns next weekend I will give them a solid rating. The Clowns, ranked #7, had their hands full with UNI. A top ten team shouldn't win by two field goals against a FCS team, even a solid program like UNI.

I was not expecting Iowa to jump to #10 in the AP Poll, not sure that win makes that case. The Clowns drop to #9 after a close win against UNI, I can see that more than Iowa jumping 8 spots. Anyway, this weekend's game is the first time both teams are ranked let alone faced each other ranked in the top ten. In the end, rankings don't matter much in this rivalry game.

I have many friends that are ISU fans, though probably only a few will act in the manner you describe. ISU fans do act as if this is their national championship which makes liking their fanbase hard. There are plenty of Iowa douches as well and winning this game is huge but it isn't our national championship. This is more of "King of the Cornfield" which really means nothing on the national scene.

I have mentioned plenty of times on GPL that this game sets my mood for Iowa's season. Wining this game really starts off the seasons tenor for the year. ISU fans have a problem looking past this game. I have heard the complaining about "screw jobs" when they lose, I've never once threw out a screw job theory or any other theory than Iowa didn't play well enough to win and ISU did in an Iowa loss.

The one thing about this series though over the years is that rankings and who they were the season before mean nothing once that game starts. Every year a different player makes the difference in a win. Sometimes it is someone you never expect, and most times it is the stars who live up to the pre-game hype.

I will say one thing about your neighbors, they must really like each other if they can tolerate one another for the three hour road trip back from Ames after their team loses.

I will say one thing about your neighbors, they must really like each other if they can tolerate one another for the three hour road trip back from Ames after their team loses.
We actually all get along really well, even the Badger/Gopher family. On Sunday we had a 5 family BBQ with bags and adult beverages flowing. Most of the college football talk was in good ribbing. The State guy and wife are season ticket holders with the tailgate lot as well. They are meeting at the lot around 8am, so they will be well lubed before the game even kicks off. Luckily they are each driving separately so the ride home will be tolerable for each.

That's a good plan to drive separately! :D Most of my ISU friends are season ticket holders/tailgaters as well. The pictures they post always look to be a good time. Actually Jack Trice is set up very well for tailgating, too bad it's for ISU games.
