WI QB Mertz has tested positive for COVID. If confirmed, with the 21 day quarantine rules, he’d miss 3 games. Nebraska, Purdue, and Michigan. Even for RB U, that could be significant. And, if it runs through the QB room, detrimental.

Wonder when the second test is released. They are probably getting expedited test results, right?

Some rumors his two roommates that were held out Friday also tested positive. If true and if they were held out surely he could have had it before the game...

Has Iowa had the same QB for the last 15 years? I could see this guy throw without a uniform and know he plays for Iowa. They all look the same.
I could halfheartedly agree with you, it does seem like our QB's stay around a while. This QB, Petras, has only had a handful of snaps in the last couple years since Stanley had the starting job locked up. I didn't watch a single snap on Saturday to see how he played, I do know that Iowa lost though...which this season I couldn't care less.

The 2020 season is one long scrimmage as far as I'm concerned. You're playing different players each week, your opponent isn't easy to scout because so are they, games will probably get canceled or moved... My 2020 CFB expectation? Set yourself up for 2021.

21 days!?? Did I miss that was the protocol for Big Ten? Will they be able to practice or workout? With back to back games, could be interesting. Wonder if any Illinois players were impacted.

I believe the Big Ten made it their rule that a positive test means you're out 21 days. Not sure if that means no practice or not. I assume yes.

The Big Ten's rule is 21 days because they wanted to monitor cardiac side effects. The league's release just says 21 days before they can return to game competition, so practice/workout would probably be fine once they start testing negative.

What is the minimum number of games to be eligible for playoffs again? People are saying because Mertz tested Friday he's eligible against UM. I figure with MN sports luck uw will cancel two games, go 7-0 and be eligible for playoffs if they beat the east winner.

I've now seen an argument that WI hasn't actually hit the threshold for a shutdown by Big10 rule, so if they don't play it should be a forfeit. God Nebraska fans are petty. It must be the red and white.

edit: on the other hand, being down the top two QBs and head coach, I wouldn't put it past Barry Alvarez to just bully the Big10 into giving them a no-contest rather than a forfeit.

A pox on both houses.

This is all a farce and it's the B1G's fault. Apparently in the 'orange/orange' and 'orange/red' phase of positive tests, the team gets to decide if it moves forward with team activities including their game schedule.

Also, the B1G has (someone can confirm) said you have to play 6 games to be eligible for the B1G conference title (meaning you can miss two).

So, if you're WI and decimated at a skill position (such as QB) with a number of other key players out - why would you NOT opt out. Instead of taking a likely loss, you get a free pass (yes, with risk you miss 2 more games down the road).

I do actually feel for NE fans and football in this scenario. WI (if their rates were in the orange section as has been implied by Adam Rittenberg supposedly per Alvarez) took the easy way out at the potential expense of NE and the rest of the West.

The B1G should have not allowed discretion for a team to decide if they play a game. Practice and team activities, sure. But games should have been managed at the league level with predetermined guidelines. Again, if all of this is true of course. It's hard to know for sure since detailed medical information isn't always released.

Orange/Orange and Orange/Red: Team must proceed with caution and enhance COVID-19 prevention (alter practice and meeting schedule, consider viability of continuing with scheduled competition).

Which is why teams shouldn't get the choice on games. There's a threshold to play - not a fuzzy middle where you pick (if this was MD would WI still play?).
The B1G has totally mishandled football (but at least we get something).

What baffles me is the inconsistency of the NCAA on this. ( not shocked though ) It sounds like he has to isolate for 10 days. Then I'm guessing he can be back if he tests negative. The B1G has a 21 day minimum before a player can come back. Can we all be on the same page please.

That’s because the NCAA wanted no part in making a decision. No decision, no responsibility, no liability. Left it up to the conferences to take the blame and set the parameters.

Remember... The NCAA has very little to do with the top tier of football in college. Basically college football just follows NCAA "rules" and then do their own thing. There is a reason why there is no NCAA "Champion" when it comes to football in the top division. The NCAA does not sanction playoffs of any sort of champion.

So why would the NCAA put it's neck out for something they have little say in?

Iowa blows 17-0 lead to lose to northwestern
Thanks for saving me time to look this up.

I've not watched one snap of Iowa football so far this year. I would be okay with them finishing 0-8.

Top 5 match up with ND and Clemson next week. With not lawerence, could be a better game
Norte Dame may only lose by 20
Haha always overrated.
Stand corrected, they pull off the win in OT against a Trevor Lawrence-less lead Clemson

Clemson's backup QB is also probably a top 10 QB in the nation already. Dude is going to be freakishly good next season.

He is a freakishly big, athletic QB & will likely end up being a very high draft pick but it looked to me that Dabo Sweeney had greatly reduced their play book from what types of passes that were attempted. That is to be expected with a Freshman QB.

Didn't expect a big dropoff for Clemson given the rest of the team.

I still expect Clemson to be in the top 4, unless someone else pulls a rabbit out of the hat, at playoff time.

Fields looks downright terrible, but Ohio State is still leading by 21 points in the third quarter.

Edit: 14 points. Hmmm.

It's really too bad the Gophers Football team couldn't control Covid, because no matter how bad Minnesota's defense is I think this season would have been their chance to win the Ax again.

I agree. You have to be able to consistently play a solid run defense against them. They just line up in their pro sets and run it up the other teams azz. Then the other guy gets his hands dirty extracting it.

I agree that the Gophers porous run defense wouldn't have been able to contain Wisconsin's running attack. On the other hand I never would have guessed that Indiana would have been able to hold the BADgers to just 141 total run yards and 6 points overall. VERY impressive, and congrats to them.

I just hope that this year proves to be an anomaly - a rebuilding year - for the Gophers so that they might be capable of doing what Indiana was able to do today.

I see in the Strib that there is a 5th yr Sr LB from FCS school in Texas to the Gophers. Started for 4 yrs & has good size. That is a nice add.
LSU took in Jabril Cox from NDSU this year. Not that it seems to have stopped Bama from hanging 48 on them in the 1st half. The dancing the Tigers did last year at mid field in Tuscaloosa is being repaid.

I have a lot of respect for Tom Allen. He has paid his dues and is an awful good coach. I would hope for the sake of IU that he is there for the long haul and doesn't get lured away by a " helmet school".
