College Football Talk

Post by gopherguy06 » Tue Feb 04 2:19 pm

Didn't see a thread anywhere, but looks like MSU coach Mark Dantonio is stepping down as head coach. Seems a little late to be doing it, but there is a coaching opening in the Big Ten. Luke Fickell seems to be the front runner, but just odd timing.

This has been rumored for months after his leave. Maybe the Gophers can pick him up for his final year. He, along with Bateman/CAB would be fun

Referred to as a mutual decision by a teammate and elsewhere Nebraska Officials said he left for a "personal health matter."

The reasons don't seem to go along with one another.

Would he be a grad transfer like Wilson was for Wisconsin, meaning he would be eligible to play from day 1?

No, he has not graduated. He actually needs to get a waiver to be eligible at all (or somehow be granted a 6th year of eligibility) since he already burned his red shirt.

When you have 14 transfers out of a school with a new head coach... there's some smoke there too.

I think the spot without the wavier makes a lot of sense. Trey Lance is pretty good too.

Does the Big Ten still have the rule that you have to sit out 2 years if you transfer to another school in the same conference or did that go away with the Transfer Portal?

I'm beginning to think that is unfortunately more and more likely. And potentially P5 schools just cutting non-conference games and going with a 10-game conference schedule.

Would definitely be a kick in the beans for the Gophers. Most excited fans have been for a season in what, 60 years? Not to mention what it would mean for guys planning to turn pro early - the NFL has indicated they don't plan to move the combine or draft. So guys like Bateman would definitely have to consider sitting out the entire year to focus on the draft (and staying healthy, since any injury in a season that starts in late Jan-early Feb means they're going to be hampered at the combine).

I think the Big Ten announces next week that there won't be any football in the fall. A spring football season has always seemed the most realistic to me. Hopefully they can work that out, but there are a lot of issues with that and they wasted a lot of time with their head in the sand hoping for things to magically return to normal.

10-game conference-only schedule seems pretty definite if it happens. Interesting rumor I've heard is that Northwestern and Minnesota pushing super-hard for teams to only play within their division.

This is going to crush those programs who get big money for playing non-conference games.

EDIT: This is NOT an argument to say that they should still play non-conference. I'm just mentioning an effect of not playing them.

That's why they were the first to go. There's no point in paying those schools big money when teams can't sell 100K tickets. That said, I think everyone can see the direction this is heading eventually.

I would imagine all the Big Ten schools will pay some sort of buy-out to their non-conference opponents.

Article in the Fargo Forum indicated most contracts have a force majure clause, so buyout costs will be minimal.

So if this happened during the season, MSU would have to miss at least two games. Even if CFB does plow ahead with the season, I can't imagine they end up with anything resembling a legitimate season.

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference plans to postpone competition in several fall sports until the spring, sources told the Star Tribune on Friday.

Some coaches and athletes have been told that football, volleyball and soccer are among the sports that will switch from this fall to the spring if the NCAA and public health officials allow it. Golf and tennis are likely to be played this fall.

So if the whole team is in quarantine that would mean that their high risk contact could have been a coach or strength & conditioning staffer or doctor.

If the Vikings were underway right now and Eric Sugarman tested positive and had been in contact with basically everyone checking them in, then their whole team would have to shutdown if they were following the NCAA style protocols. I think that is one difference between amatuer and professions is that while they'll contact trace and test everyone, they won't quarantine people for 14 days as a precaution for professionals.

The NSIC announced today that all fall sports will be delayed until September 26th. The NSIC, for those not familiar, is a Minnesota based D2 athletic conference with teams like Minnesota State, Bemidji State, and UMD that are members. Football programs will be cut down to just eight games, nothing announced about whether fans will be allowed to attend games yet.

I saw a few tweets out there from at least one former player, but even if the his complaints were remotely true (unfair treatment of players) I can't see how it would require involvement of the FBI in any way.
Currently under construction.

I have no information to offer here on this. Honestly, I've kept myself in the dark with the football program in Iowa after they chased Chris Doyle out of the door.

Pretty much a rehashing of what went down in early June. Doyle is gone and now Ferentz is trying to level the field with his team by addressing racial inequalities. This isn't just a Ferentz issue either, this goes back to Fry starting in the 80's. The institution cares more for the program than the players. They each have used each other to further their own selfish goals.

I would hate to see what they could dig up if they looked toward Carver-Hawkeye Arena in both programs that live there.

If this is true, this guy should never be allowed to coach again, at any level.
https://www.coloradoan.com/story/news/2 ... 5572625002
CSU football players and university athletic department staff say coaches have told players not to report COVID-19 symptoms, threatened players with reduced playing time if they quarantine and claim CSU is altering contact tracing reports to keep players practicing.
...
Said an athletic department staff member: "There are some red flags in the athletic department but the common denominator with this administration is to protect the coaches before the student-athletes and that makes them feel more like cattle than student-athletes.''
and I don't doubt for a second that this same type of stuff is going on at lots of other schools.

Didn't think CSU would be the first to get caught. I am sure the Helmet schools are all doing it.

NCAA Division III has cancelled all fall sports championships for 2020, some DIII conferences have already cancelled their seasons anyway. The NJCAA has already shifted fall sports to spring. This trend seems to be working its way up the ladder.

From what I can tell, canceled really means canceled. No D3 football championship in the spring.

Let's enjoy the NHL playoffs, MLB for now, and racing because the fall might be very quiet for sports entertainment.

I just read that DII followed the DIII and cancelled all fall sports championships and won't be made up in the spring as well. So the NSIC football conference will only play the eight scheduled conference games.

My guess is you'll see the NSIC cancel too. They'll want the tuition revenue but avoid costs of a season, so they'll likely wait until after school starts on Aug 24 if they can.

The allegations are bigger than just covering up COVID-19:
Rams athletic director Joe Parker announced via a news release that CSU football has been “paused” immediately due to allegations of “racism and verbal abuse from CSU’s athletic administration generally and in the football program specifically.”

Maybe. The MAC TV contract, if there even is one, is chickenfeed.
TV $$$$ for the power 5 is the gorilla in the room in so far as FBS. The NC$$ is nothing more than an anchor for the power 5 & there has been talk for a while about ditching it (NC$$) for a while.

Maybe & I wouldn't be surprised BUT when Sabin, Malzahn, Ogeron, Smart, & Sweeney & Co. say it is over, it is over.
I am not saying it shouldn't be but the $$$$ and passion for the college game down there......

The players are sounding like they're forming a union. At least they want some say in how things are handled this season and build from there.
