Yeah, I got that detail wrong. It does nothing to change the story.

The 6 point differential would have at least got us to OT. And Cousins would be sacked 3 times...

This year and next I believe. The thing is the problems this team has are much much deeper than the QB

But he also will never lead the Vikings to a championship, which looking back hilariously is what we signed him for while the window was still slightly open.

He was supposed to be the final piece, and the fact he was the best available to sign. The other pieces were supposedly in place. Oops.

He was the best UFA QB in a long time. Looking back that shows how hard it is to get a great QB without drafting.

I agree. To me, it almost is like the Mauer signing. If MN didn't sign this player, the fans would have rioted. In hindsight, many are now mad that THAT player got all that money, and no real results happened.

Re: Vikings 2020 season
I am mad that both players got paid a significant portion of the team cap (yes, the Twins have their own self-set salary cap) and then played well below their pay level.
With Cousins, it irritates the hell out of me that he can look like a pro bowl QB against average competition, but if he plays against a good defense, he can't complete a pass.
A passer rating below 60 for both Packer games last year and we sign him to an extension at over $30 million per year? That's 15% of the cap for a guy who hasn't proven he can beat winning teams. WTF?
https://www.theringer.com/nfl/2020/1/3/ ... rd-preview
From this Jan 3rd article
"Cousins is 0-9 on Monday Night Football, 0-1 in the playoffs, 1-11-1 as a Viking when trailing in the fourth quarter, and 6-29 against teams with winning records in his career."
Of course he is now 1-2 in the playoffs. But those are not stats of a $30M+ QB. Frustrating.

Pure insanity is signing a QB that can't move and a running back to big bucks with no offensive line. That is nuts.

I'm not as unsold on Cousins as some of you. I am not convinced he couldn't manage an NFCG appearance if the OL in front of him wasn't complete dogs**t.

I agree. I think Cousins could tear defenses apart if he had a line like Marino did in the mid 80's.Instead he has one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL.

Cousins doesn’t improvise well, Keenum did improvise well, Cousins isn’t as brutal as Ponder was when things break down in the pocket,... but Cousin still essentially is a system driven QB. That’s not changing folks, 37 games as Vikings QB, the eye test results are in...Cousins sorely lacks the “it” factor!

Re: Vikings 2020 season
I think this is key. Cousins himself said he needs structure to succeed. I'll go further, and say what others have hinted at, flat out said, etc on various platforms. If a play is going to form (structure), he's good. If that structure breaks down...he's lost.bearpaw28 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 28 11:08 amCousins doesn’t improvise well, Keenum did improvise well, Cousins isn’t as brutal as Ponder was when things break down in the pocket,... but Cousin still essentially is a system driven QB. While Fran could just scramble around, Peyton would change the play beforehand so he wouldn't have to scramble around.

I'd like to see a stat that reflect, "Quality Time To Throw" or however to phrase it. Just because Cousins has "time to throw: longest doesn't mean he has the best chance to get rid of it. When you're running away from defenders you're still holding onto the ball. While this site doesn't give that it gives some interesting items if accurate: https://nextgenstats.nfl.com/stats/pass ... essiveness
Time to Throw: 5th
Average Completed Air Yards: 1st
Average Intended Air Yards: 3rd
Aggressiveness: 7th
Longest Completed Air Distance: 4th
Air Yards Per Sticks: 6th
Comp Probability*: 31st
Expected Completion Percentage: **31st
*Completion Probability
The probability of a pass completion, based on numerous factors such as receiver separation from the nearest defender, where the receiver is on the field, the separation the passer had at time of throw from the nearest pass rusher, and more.
**Expected Completion Percentage (xCOMP)

The last 2 suggest he's not being given the best opportunities with respect to protection and having open receivers. He's middle of the pack when it comes to overcoming xCOMP.

Re: Vikings 2020 season
That surely could be part of the equation, but the majority of these stats suggest he's not when given protection. Additioally the xCOMP is supposed to take into account what's available to him when under duress.fightclub30 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 30 12:33 amOr is he making really poor decisions on who to throw it to? Which is not me suggesting he shouldn't be better - but analytically it surely appears the OL is not putting him a position to succeed on the whole.
Currently under construction.
Re: Vikings 2020 season
Seems like a lot of math to come to the obvious conclusion that the OL sucks and Cousins is good but not great.

QB puts his player out to try. Receiver drops his head right in harms way while D player is already going to make the play.

Not sure I agree with the ejection part. Penalty yes but the TE also dropped down as Harrison was mid-tackle which caused the helmet to helmet contact.

Re: Vikings 2020 season
Correct.
These plays won’t go away. Because if a D player can’t make that play he doesn’t play in this league. Risk of getting flagged once in a while does not out weigh not making plays.
Does nothing for player safety. But creates the illusion it is there.

Watson is just looking for where George Iloka is and then throwing it to the route he's supposed to be covering. Usually about 10-15 yards away from George.

Cousins can’t lead the passer. All of the receivers that have the defense beat have to slow down to catch the under thrown ball.

Re: Vikings 2020 season
Aaron Rodgers does that all the time. In today's NFL if the receiver has to slow down and the CB runs into him it's DPI 99% of the time

Prediction: 34-30, SEA. I think MN will put up a fight, but will fall short.

When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the country you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.

He hasn’t even been kicked out of a game yet for a bonehead hit. That will happen. Eventually.

Re: Vikings 2020 season
I mentioned on The Tweeter Machine that the Vikings have seemed to pull their head out of somewhere uncomfortable, to put it politely.
