Turkey of the Year

Post by Zwak » Mon Nov 25 8:55 am

Not sure if Reusse is doing his Turkey of the Year column any more but that doesn’t mean we still can’t discuss.

Who would you pick as Turkey of the Year?

Himself. Calling himself a Turkey for underrating the Vikes and Gopher football.

I expect St. Olaf's president would get a seat for pi$$ing on Reusse's beloved St. Thomas, and I expect the Wild to be well-represented this year.

He was already awarded the turkey himself in 2017... but since he's gone after PJ Fleck repeatedly he'd be worthy again.

Zach Parise would definitely get consideration from the committee. A player with such an anchor of a contract who has no comprehension that he has no value on the trade market. $ - https://theathletic.com/1099792/2019/07 ... nd-future/

“But you get to that point where you want to win. That’s all you want to do. Trust me, we’d all love to win here. I think this place would be absolute insanity if we won here. So that’s the goal. I mean, I just don’t know. Let’s put it this way, they haven’t come to me asking if I want to get traded somewhere. We love everything about Minnesota. It’s just the hockey part lately has been difficult.”

Yes... Patrick would probably give St. Olaf President David R. Anderson strong consideration. Although I'd probably pin it more on the Star Tribune and media for buying St. Thomas President Julie Sullivan and their AD Phil Esten charade. Every single article seems to include the language 'involuntary removal from the MIAC' which is a facade.

“St. Thomas has not asked me about membership in the Missouri Valley Football Conference,” Commissioner Patty Viverito said. “(The Pioneer League is) not on the table. It’s not been put on the table. And actually any speculation in the media about that doesn’t help (St. Thomas).”

Viverito emphasized that an NCAA waiver is “complicated, and it’s unique,” noting that no institution has ever lost membership in a Division III conference for the reasons that have been circulated publicly for St. Thomas.

I'm just going to throw out that, for once, it won't (shouldn't) be anyone associated with the University of Minnesota and its athletic department.
Seems like historically there's always the large opportunity to put someone in the running and right now, there's really not.

As to who...
I feel like regardless of the Twins amazing success this season, there's someone there tied to the big playoff failure against the Yankees and being the only team to get swept in the playoffs. After that, I go immediately to the Wild.

Yes, can we take a minute to appreciate the fact that last year's turkey is doing things at the University of a Minnesota that haven't been done in A HUNDRED YEARS.

I hope you caught UST's AD this week, who was quoted as saying the following:
St. Thomas Athletics Director Phil Esten said Thursday that the NCAA agrees that St. Thomas “look(s) like we could be and operate like a Division I institution” and the university will know more about its fate after the NCAA convention.
And then people wonder why the MIAC said that they weren't a D-3 institution any more?

St Thomas isn’t as responsible for getting expelled as the other MIAC schools...but they bear their share of fault too. I think secretly they’re happy how the whole thing turned out

Doesn't it seem likely that Fleck would leave for a " better " job? It's been his MO, not that he's any different than 99% of college coaches. :conf2:

It is a totally fair question.

I think it will come down to him having a few seasons like this one in a row. Where the Big10 is in reach, maybe a playoff, ect. Where he feels like he can capture it all. And if the U keeps throwing money.

PJ is a big persona and a brand, a big institution like Notre Dame night not like that look. Who knows but it is a completely legit topic of discussion.

If he can bring the Gophers to the point of semi consistently vying for the B1G title, he’ll have a job here for the rest of his life. Maybe not so much at Auburn.

His MO? He has had two jobs. Unless you mean as an assistant and then it is literally every coaches MO.

He would be restricted to death at Notre Dame...Patrick named them because of Lou Holtz.

Patty once again showing what a sad pathetic troll he is. I am sure he got a lot of clicks out of Gopher fans though so he got his little victory.

Yeah how dare we not like his second rate writing? Since he uses satire it must be genius...especially since he can't help but tell us how genius it is.

His writing sucks...it sucks when it positive and it sucks when it's negative. There is a reason the only people that like him are the 12 people who buy the Strib. They probably think AM radio is amazing too

I think anyone who dislikes him and clicks on his tripe though deserves to be mocked as much as him. Don't feed the trolls :)

The UofM is world's away in many aspects from what Holtz left behind. Most games have big audiences on TV now, Notre Dame is not as almighty, PJ has proven he can get the recruits he wants and the support from the school and fans he needs. And the stadium is infinitely more attractive.

Never say never of course but...
Currently under construction.

Not a lot of places would give PJ the latitude he has at the U
He has his brand and I'm not sure it would play the same in South Bend / Tallahassee / Austin

Row The Boat, Ski U Mah, Go Gophers.
Let’s actually advance to the Rose 🌹 Bowl (which I believe we will) before losing too much sleep over the possibility of PJ leaving down the road ☝️

If he donated $1 million to charity, some of you would find a reason to be upset with him. His article is self-deprecating and enjoyable. The last several years have been tremendous. If he were to rip on people with opposite opinions as much as some of this crowd.....
I have no problem with his writing. Or him, for that matter. But, cutting open the Holtz wound during this season? Especially after PJ signed an extension? He can go f*** himself.

For those that care, it's back. I know Reusse is not very popular here, but I always enjoyed this column and I always enjoy his snark and trolling. A good column with some good nominees. Reusse got a couple of good zingers in, and I can't argue who he chose as the winner. I won't give it away in case some of you want to read it.

During the pandemic, Reusse has mostly been doing stories about Minnesota athletes, coaches, etc. He has always been very good at writing these kind of personal profiles. He is a completely different person for these stories. I recommend people should check these out.

When Reusse is doing interviews and such, he is wonderful to listen to. I loved when he would have Jim Kaat on and they would discuss both current and past days of baseball, especially Twins-centric chats. When he ventures into "Editorial" territory? Not so much.

According to Pat, his dad would strap a dead deer to his hood, paint its nose red, and tell the neighborhood kids that he killed Rudolph. The apple didn't fall far from the tree.

When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the country you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.

You can get people to talk in other ways. When he wants to simply tell a story it can be wonderful, although he more than enough times sent a story to press in which it was clear he forgot to edit the story to be cohesive, didn't have an ending in mind or never got to write it in time.
Currently under construction.

If he wants to be known as an assshole after he dies then he has succeeded. Congrats on making money by being a prick.

Others, like Dark Star, did it differently. I never listened to him until he joined KFAN near the end, but it sounds like everyone loved Dark.
