Did anybody watch the NHL all-star festivities? I recorded the skills competition and the game but just curious if anything groundbreaking too look for.

Re: NHL 2019-20 season
Once a Whioux always a Whioux.
This part was golden:
They would have let him go up until the point he pulled the curtain rod off the wall. That was a point too far!!According to the arrest citation, obtained by the Bowling Green Daily News, Belfour allegedly tried fighting the manager of the hotel's bar, smashed a glass window and pulled a curtain rod off the wall.
When cops arrived at the scene, Belfour was lying on the floor holding the curtain rod ... and had slurred speech, blood-shot eyes, and trouble keeping his balance ... according to the citation.

Currently under construction.

Re: NHL 2019-20 season
I finished watching the NHL weekend stuff. The skills competition was fun, although I thought the shooting pucks from the concourse was a little silly; not really a real “skill.” Some impressive records set by those guys tho! The women’s 3 on 3 was impressive. If I could do life over I would learn to play hockey (well).
The all star game itself was such a great show of talent and skill, they played pretty seriously, especially the last few minutes of the final “period”.
The little technology things were annoying and seemingly random: name trackers floating above the players, a circle around the feet of the player with the puck, and the most annoying was the black streak behind the puck.
And then there were the boards - for the tv cameras they were digitally enhanced, so during play the entire boards were constantly changing and animating, it was distracting. Ugh. Advertising has gotten out of control.
I’m glad I recorded the events, they were fun to watch. Pretty neat that the team with the cup was hosting, it certainly added a buzz to the event.

Re: NHL 2019-20 season
The whole EDM goalie coming out to challenge the CAL goalie is the type of thing that makes me think fighting should leave the game altogether. Most of the scraps leading up to that point seemed ok, but that seemingly obligatory brawl was stupid.

Throw a couple folding chairs and tables out there and it's pro wrestling. Put Marty Miller in one of the striped shirts and I'd think they were coming to us live from the Calhoun Beach Manor.

Re: NHL 2019-20 season
The goalie fight could have been really costly to both teams since it was considered a secondary fight and both goalies were ejected from the game. That meant if somehow the other goalies got injured, the in arena backups would have had to play.

IIRC, Chris Simon got like 30 games for stomping on the foot of a player. So it should be around or north of that.

That was worse than any of the physical scary stuff I've seen in hockey. In a way he's very fortunate that it happened where it did. They had to revive him with a defib....If he had been on a hike....Chris83 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 14 12:42 amScary stuff from Tuesday night when the Blues Jay Bouwmeester collapsed on the bench due to a "Cardiac incident".

Ridiculous how stacked Colorado is for the future. I'll say they make three of the next six cups, and between them and Edmonton they make at least six of the next ten.

He played nearly half the game and stopped 8 of 10 shots. I see the back up goaltender had only one save. Did Ayers even had time to get his gear on before having to go into the game? Or did they have to stop the game for a while?frozen4champs wrote: ↑Sat Feb 22 7:05 pmThe 42 year old zamboni driver for the Toronto Marlies is in net for Carolina after both Canes goalies are hurt. And how did they get his name on a jersey so quickly?
How did he not puke all over the ice?

My guess is that the second the starting goalie got hurt he made his way down to the locker room and go sit on the bench. That is usually where it ends.Bertogliat wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23 12:06 pmHe played nearly half the game and stopped 8 of 10 shots. I see the back up goaltender had only one save. I am not sure how much time was between starter injury and then backup injury.

Koivu is done. It's more important to be one of the few players to play 1000+ games and play for the same team then win a Cup.

Re: NHL 2019-20 season
Kinda Joe Mauer-ish. I ran into a prominent baseball player from the great state of Minnesota (hint: born here, played for the U and went on to win a world series...I know, I know, too easy). Anyhoo, I asked him if Joe should be considered for the HOF, and, without hesitation, he said, "first ballot." He was dead serious. Then he told me the only problem he had with Joe is that he didn't do whatever he could to go win a world series somewhere....thought he was way too complacent playing for a team he knew had zero chance of winning one.

Koivu is in small company. It's a small list of players that have done it. He'll be listed somewhere just not on the Cup.

I enjoyed the Russo reaction to this on his podcast with Souhan... basically like... "North Dakota?!? Are you freakin' kidding me? NHL players and teams are not going to be staying at a Hilton Garden Inn or SpringHill Suites for a month. It's not a real option."

Re: NHL 2019-20 season
Now they backpedaled on that... think it's hard to hold a draft when it's one of the big opportunities where teams move rostered players for picks to change their cap situation.
I see Montreal signed Romanov.
https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/video/button-can ... ys~1955308
Not sure how good he'll be, but he was super fun to watch in the WJC. If I had a roster with Dumba on one pair and Romanov on the next, that'd be fun.

Re: NHL 2019-20 season
They might as well shut it down at this point. To much of a charade.
Someone is bound to test positive at some point. Then what? Shut it down again since they are only using one location for 12 teams?
Staying on the road that long? At this point it would be an exhibition and I can’t see teams being all that disappointed when their time is up and they are eliminated. Especially knowing that all players don’t want to come back as it stands right now.

Re: NHL 2019-20 season
I think the NHL would love to find a way to finish the season because next year could be a disaster as well. And then you have two seasons messed up.

Re: NHL 2019-20 season
Do either of these cities have the infrastructure to manage 12 teams? Hotel rooms, sure. But what about other ice facilities for practices/training? Playing two games a day on the same sheet of ice leaves little real opportunity to use that same one for practices. And if you have 12 teams in one city, are you going to schedule the other 8 to share one facility per day? That seems really impractical. Probably need 2-3 more sheets in fairness. Can Vegas do that?
MSP, Denver, Chicago, Detroit, Boston, Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver would be the real options to host all of that, I think.

You bring up good questions. My guess is the NHL feels like yes to most of them since they are this far along with a plan.SkiUMahLaw wrote: ↑Tue May 19 1:38 pmDo either of these cities have the infrastructure to manage 12 teams? Strib article today seems to indicate they could have as many as 8 hub cities. That seems a bit much.team22tank wrote: ↑Tue May 19 2:01 pmYou bring up good questions. I could see four, however. Six teams in each of four cities would work pretty well with an arena and at least one practice rink, and all NHL cities should have access to that. Eight hubs with 3 teams in each doesn't really schedule well.

Re: NHL 2019-20 season
Unless something changes soon, my pure guess is that both cities would be in the same country in the case of quarantine restrictions when crossing the border. Makes more sense to do it once than have to do it again prior to the final. Or maybe they'd get special treatment and not have to follow those rules? Who knows. Still a lot to figure out.

Vegas has a practice facility out in the desert that has two rinks and multiple locker rooms.gopherhockeyfan7 wrote: ↑Tue May 26 3:55 pmUnless something changes soon, my pure guess is that both cities would be in the same country in the case of quarantine restrictions when crossing the border. Probably to much monkeying around but if there isn’t going to be fans at least initially I would play in a smaller venue.
Ridder would be a perfect example. And plenty of practice options around town.

I'm not sure how the ice in Vegas in July/August could handle that much use.Grovetown Scotty wrote: ↑Tue May 26 4:00 pmVegas has a practice facility out in the desert that has two rinks and multiple locker rooms.gopherhockeyfan7 wrote: ↑Tue May 26 3:55 pmUnless something changes soon, my pure guess is that both cities would be in the same country in the case of quarantine restrictions when crossing the border. Also... I think we're a ways from the end of the season actually happening.

“We voted strictly on the format,” Dubnyk said. “In other words, ‘If we are to come back, this is how it’s going to be played.’ But we have not even touched on logistics or cities or travel or testing or how the economics will work or what this quarantine bubble (the players are) supposed to live in will be like or any of that stuff yet.

Any idea when the players association will vote? It's nice to have some hockey to talk about even if it is a long shot. I wonder how much of a "bubble" Dubnyk wants. Many people including myself go to work everyday.Vegoe wrote: ↑Tue May 26 4:43 pmI'm not sure how the ice in Vegas in July/August could handle that much use.Grovetown Scotty wrote: ↑Tue May 26 4:00 pmVegas has a practice facility out in the desert that has two rinks and multiple locker rooms.gopherhockeyfan7 wrote: ↑Tue May 26 3:55 pmUnless something changes soon, my pure guess is that both cities would be in the same country in the case of quarantine restrictions when crossing the border. Re: NHL 2019-20 season
I don’t think it’s about how much of a bubble he wants. More so that will they actually be in a bubble? Will the workers be going home everyday? If so, it’s not a bubble and they’re making a sacrifice to be away from their families for nothing really.
How do you handle emergencies where you need to be with your family? Do you get quarantined and miss a round? Being that he had a big health scare with his wife this year, I could see it being extra hard for him to leave for an undetermined amount of time.
I’m not against or for this idea for the record. Pretty much neutral. Just seems like all options are varying degrees of bad for a number of those involved. I’m interested to read about how it all develops.
