I know STA beat Duluth East in the quarters last year, but tonight is the best game I've seen them play in "AA". Uni question: is the STA "road" set darker than in years past? I thought they were always more of a royal blue and these looked much more navy.

HM is really putting the wood to Moorhead. I would just not want to play them in the quarters. I know they've lost in the few appearances (2015, 2017 & 2018), but still. Lechner is very solid behind the bench.
Yes they are darker. Not sure why they changed.

Yes they went from a lighter Maple leafs blue to a darker scheme. They played a much better team defense then they ever did under the Vannellis. That could be why they struggled in the first half as that transition may have been tough but I barely follow the team so idk.

I was expecting a lot more from them. The other team that did not look good at all? Lakeville South, but that wasn't a surprise.

We left after Hill made it 5-1. Didn’t seem like Moorhead had it in them. Found the radio call in the car. They were flabbergasted at the score. Could not believe what they were seeing. Looks like the Moorhead team they have been all year did not show up tonight and Hill played maybe their best all season.

Has a team representing Section 1A or 3A ever won a Quarterfinal game in Class A State Tournament history? St. Cloud Cathedral just trounced the 1A champ Mankato East/Loyola champ 11-2.
I believe Red Wing was section 1A when they won it, but don't quite me on that. Rochester Lourdes has been in the championship game and made the semis multiple times.
Yes, forgot about Lourdes, but this year they lost to Waseca in a play-in game so they didn't even make the quarterfinal round.

Current 1A & 3A teams
Winona
Austin
Waseca
Rochester Lourdes
Albert Lea
LaCrescent-Hokah
Dodge County
Minnesota River
Mankato East/Loyola*
Faribault
Mankato West

Fairmont
Willmar
Worthington
Redwood Valley
Hutchinson* (won their 3 section games by a combined 24-2; we'll see how they do against Warroad tonight!)
Luverne
Marshall
New Ulm
Windom
Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato

* No. 1 seed
Thought I read something about the Lourdes boys team having numbers issues, but of course I can't find that tonight.

I was one of them - left after the 1st period of the EP/LVS mismatch. But the Blake/Maple Grove game was very entertaining.

I guess I can root for Blake since even though they're a private, they at least opted up to take on the big boys. Plus that first line at least is fun to watch. Heck even STA hasn't had it easy since going to AA. Ken Pauly and Lee Smith can suck it though.

One of my friends from grade school through high school has a son on the Blake team.
I suspect you will all be cheering for this player very soon. :M: :dup: :M2:

Knowing his dad the kid is extremely well grounded and has a huge competitive drive.

To be consistent you should also root for BSM since "they at least opted up to take on the big boys" too. They were one overtime penalty shot goal away from knocking Blake out of the state tournament picture.

He clearly slashed the stick out of the hand.

I'm not sure how you can use the word "clearly" on that, but if that is the standard for slashing I'd tell my team to keep one hand off your stick at all times and drop it when anyone gets near you. The fact that you need slow motion to see he even makes contact with the other player's stick tells the story. I think Lou has seen a few games and he sure didn't like it.
In general, I felt the refs really struggled to call this game consistently. Early in the game a MG player was unimpeded to the net and a Blake player from behind put his stick in the belly of the puck carrier. It looked like a 2 min hook minimum but no call.

Then, with the outcome in the balance and precisely at a time a ref should use the best possible judgement, they call the slash that pretty much ended the game. I felt it was more of a very short-stroke thrust of the stick, like you'd use to gain a little leverage when you go to tie up a player. To call a slash on that play - at that time - is a reffing blunder.

Why didn't MG pull their goalie after going down by 2 goals? They finished the game with the goalie in the net. Am I missing something?

MG was a better half court team, while Blake was always looking for the fast break. Blake is good, but for two consecutive games they've also been a little lucky.

Have to feel for Maple Grove. No question this was their year if they could have kept their group together. They lost three kids to the NTDP, one to the WHL, their best forward due to injury, and the kid tied for fourth in team scoring on Blake. And they still had enough talent left over to give it a solid go at one of the best teams in the state.

Every private school in AA is opting up. Though I always give Blake and Holy Family a little extra credit for opting up as soon as it looked like they might be good, instead of collecting a couple trophies at A first.

Not a coincidence. They could be scary if they're able to start utilizing all the talent they get.

[/i] Like somebody mentioned before, what do you do when/if the MG player picks the puck up and MG proceeds to score because the defenseman got his stick knocked out of his hands? Tough spot for the ref, obviously tough for MG.

Oooh... CJ is reffing the Cathedral/Hermantown game.

I know many of you hate the refs, but CJ is a really good guy from my interaction with him. He was at Mariucci last weekend as one of the video replay guys along with Hunt. So even though these guys retire from the ice, they are still around. With CJ.... He still does HS games.

St. Thomas has goal tending. Most teams lose to Andover last night.

The Andover goalie gave up the GWG on an extremely stoppable shot....if the goalie firms up against the pipe, that puck can't go in.

#15 on STA can flat out fly.

I agree goaltending was the difference in the STA game. The Cadets also collapsed and defended well in their zone

Hope I’m wrong but Hallam seems likely to play out of state. No inside info, just a gut feeling.

Andover made ZERO adjustments during the 3rd period, they had no plan once they fell behind.

HA HA HA. Line of the tournament by the play-by-play guy. Him & Parrish were talking about all the guys in the box. "I've never seen that many guys in the box at one time before." Then he says "It happens up at North Dakota a few times!" followed by a quick little chuckle for Parrish.

BRILLIANT!

Not sure why I mentioned BSM since they didn't make the tourney. Possible auto-response since I will always believe that Pauly can suck it. The distinction again as noted is that Blake is the newest private to opt up.

Is it possible we can go to three classes so Hermantown can actually opt down? Want to make sure they're not overexerting themselves in "A".

Maybe they could move the whole town to Wisconsin.

Some less than stellar goaltending both games.

Unless you’re a Mahtomedi fan...

I don’t fault the Warroad goalie on a couple of the though...that 5th one was a snipe, and the (2nd? 3rd?) the defense left a guy all alone in front. That 4th one was brutal though.

From my interactions with players on St. Thomas when they won three in a row and even before that they always wanted to play up and were super excited when they did. As a competitor you always want to prove yourself against the best, at least I always felt that way. I cant imagine the Hermantown boys feel any differently as I'm sure they get grief from their friends who play for East. It's unfortunate that they don't play in AA because an East/Hermantown 7AA section final would be a blast to watch.

Also - I noticed schools stopped putting the number of students in the official guidebook. Is Hermantown close to eclipsing the small school tournament on the basis of school size? I have no idea what the cutoff is.

I don't think they're particularly close. The cut-off is usually around 1250 and Hermantown's enrollment is around 650.

I believe Kennedy, Mathomedi and Monticello are the 3 largest single A schools. with enrollments (per MSHSL) of 1,150 - 1,113 and 1,115 respectively.

Hermantown (per MSHSL) is 614...

Roseau is 341.

The "cut-off" moves around, but yes, around 1,200. For Hockey, Class AA is the largest 64 schools plus opt-ups.

Lunch assistance comes into play, as does single gender schools, etc. Which alters the numbers.

Maybe they could move the whole town to Wisconsin.
That seems unduly harsh. I mean make them move up, sure, but Wisconsin? Yikes.

Actually I was thinking that since they couldn't opt down to a third class in Minnesota, Wisconsin hockey could serve the same purpose.

HA HA HA. Line of the tournament by the play-by-play guy. Him & Parrish were talking about all the guys in the box. "I've never seen that many guys in the box at one time before." Then he says "It happens up at North Dakota a few times!" followed by a quick little chuckle for Parrish.

BRILLIANT!
Your post reminded me of some Sue fans from the Final Five days.

They had a sign that said "Natural Born Penalty Killers" referring to the fact that they had a good penalty kill % that year. Every time I saw the sign I chuckled since it looked like they were saying their own team was a bunch of goons from birth.

My seats for the Final Five where around a bunch of Sue fans talk about drawing the short straw but my personality allowed me to have A LOT of fun with them. I would saying things like well tonight's game is between two teams of Minnesota kids one group just has to play for North Dakota since no kids from North Dakota know how to play hockey. One of the Sue fans got pissed and shot back "We have some players on our team from North Dakota" well he was half right that year the only player from North Dakota was the third string goalie which I knew so I responded "Yeah your third string goalie I stand corrected and laughed" He didn't like that I knew his team better then he did.

I'm sure since you wrote this, you saw the replay, but for anyone that didn't the original shot didn't go in, the guy at the top of the crease took a swipe at knocked it past the defender that had fallen back to assist the goalie.

Soooo many times goals come as the result of players watching the puck. #19 on Hermantown watched the Mahtomedi captain skate right next to him but never even attempted to tie him up. There were four Hermantown players coasting to the front of their net when the puck went in.
