My wife used to work for a department that interacted with new students including the athletes (into 2014) and we have friends who still do so and manage some of the programs surrounding new students. Now, each year, a new football player or two will do something off putting, questionable, or inappropriate. Based on coach's response, here's what I'd say:

- Mason: Can't remember, but was never a discussion
- Brewster: Was a dumpster fire, no desire to manage or discipline beyond required levels, probably lucky nothing significant happened here
- Kill: Cared, had boundaries, addressed issues as notifed of something - dealt with the issue 1-1 with the player
- Claeys: Not around to know in this example, but public forum tells us what we need to know
- Fleck: Proactive, reaches out to the department to ask they keep his staff informed, promises exlempary behavior, has staff who actively manage the "social" part of his "athletically, socially, spiriturally" speak. This past fall, one new player did something requiring Fleck's staff be informed - the entire team wrote individual apology notes.

Here's where Fleck differentiates himself. Our other coaches coached football and built athletes with some focus on building students. Fleck builds men / adults leveraging the bond of football. His regimen is not about just a successfull football product, it's about preparing 18-22 year for life. It sounds like a bunch of "speak" when he talks, but it's not.

If I had a student athlete, I would 100% want them to play for Fleck - no quesiton. I would trust him to do what's right and not compromise integrity for success.
What’s fantastic about this is that it has translated into success on the field as well. I found the improvement of the team to be astonishing between the Georgia Southern game and the Penn State game, both of which I was at.

It’s nice to see the program be both functional and successful. Coyle has done a very nice job since taking over!

Sounds like Philip Howard entered the transfer portal for his final year. Was hoping he aould pan out a little more as a MN prospect but buried behind a deep WR group and moved to DB wheee he saw little action.

I'm down with that. I could have made arguments for 9-11 to be re-ordered in circular logic with our win over PSU and loss to WI. So, top 10 finish in the AP for the first time since 1962, first finish in the AP poll since 2003. What a season of "restOAR" it has been. 15th time we've finished in the poll since its inception.

Yeah, that trio could be re-ordered in several ways with many good arguments, but in the end, it's essentially a 3-way tie for 10th, which feels about right.

Minnesota won every game they were supposed to win, won a huge upset over PSU, and a significant upset over Auburn to finish the season.

Wisconsin lost to Illinois, and ended the season with two straight losses.

I can see why Minnesota is higher ranked despite the head-to-head results.

almost all the O returning including the OL so hopefully they can build some depth. Biggest question is the D. With some players with lots of snaps gone and most of Kill’s recruits gone, will be time to see what Fleck brought in.

They do have a more difficult schedule next year, but a lot of their defensive depth didn't graduate. 11 wins will be a tall order, but I don't anticipate them sliding back to less than 8 wins.

Sad to see Nebraska instead of Wisconsin scheduled for the last week of the season, but it's not the end of the world.

Was it so wrong for me to make fun of the football team for the non-conference schedule on twitter? It tends to get those fans going. But I think I had a valid point. If the hockey team had that kind of cream puff non-conference schedule year after year after year.... They would get vilified.

Yes... this football team is much much better. But it's non-conference schedule through 2025 is (for the most part) a joke. Apparently a few people didn't like me saying that. Even though it is true.

There isn’t enough people who would even notice of gopher hockey went cream-puff non-conference to vilify.

There's just no real reward in CFB for playing good non conference teams early in the season. Well, there is, but the risk highly outweighs it, IMO.

If we would have had a loss to a top 25 team in week 3 (and we would have lost, I think, with how this team took a while to gel), there would have been nowhere NEAR the amount of hype around the program when we were 5, 6, 7-0 while beating bad B1G teams. It would have just been "same old Gophers, can never beat a good team". And then who knows if Penn State happens.
Ease your mind, have a banana or two.

Who should they play? Follow up, why would those teams play them?

You act like the Gophers are the propagators of this, but they are just part of the overall national trend. Not to mention, just because you think a school like FAU is a joke doesnt actually make them one. They finished this season ranked #27.

This says the Gophers had a tougher schedule than you gave them credit for

And can we drop the pretense that the Gopher Hockey team for most of my fandom didnt play cupcakes half the time. In 2002 on our way to the Title the mantra by the opposing fans for the first month and a half was "The Gophers Havent Played Anybody Yet".

Appalachian State finished the season ranked 19 with a 13-1 record. The only loss was to GA Southern.

Fresno State spent time in the rankings and knocked off Boise State this year.

This years non conference opponents weren't pushovers.

That would be great. If only you could just say "hey we are playing UCLA" and have it be so.

Again what incentive do those schools have to play the Gophers? You act like those schools are calling us and we are ignoring them...everyone plays cupcakes. And lets not forget that Fresno State is 1 year removed from being 12-2.

But hey you are right...the football team should be like the hockey team who played those world beaters Colorado College and Niagara in the non-con season. ;)

All I am saying is that if the hockey team played the kind of non-conference schedule year after year after year.... There would be complete outrage. But in football it seems to be perfectly acceptable. And when you call them out for it, they become the biggest damn whiners.

The FACT is that yes... hockey played a few cream puffs. But they also played the 2x defending national champions. The current #1 team. They could have played Mankato, who was #1 a large portion of the season. SCSU was #1 for a lot of last year.

So nice cherry picking with CC and Niagara.

My take, the football team is stepping up their game. BYU and UNC are not cupcakes. They’re also playing to a different standard and status quo. All teams in football do it. And they do take crap for it.

Power 5 conference teams want a home and home series, if they are scheduling NC games.
A mid-major / FCS school wants a payday and a chance to beat FBS school.
The FBS school wants as may home games as possible for the revenue.
Hockey did the same thing, having as many home games as they could for the payday.

The unbalanced schedule messes with this a bit two (5 and 4 B1G home games rotating). That means in a a 4 BIG home game season, you want all 3 NC games to be at home to keep 7 home games a season. You're not going to schedule a bunch of P5 teams willing to sign up for that.

The unbalanced schedule messes with this a bit two (5 and 4 B1G home games rotating). That means in a a 4 BIG home game season, you want all 3 NC games to be at home to keep 7 home games a season. You're not going to schedule a bunch of P5 teams willing to sign up for that.
This. You can MAYBE get good team to play you IF your are willing to play them on the road. But is the U willing to give up home game revenue to get better match ups?

And is there any benefit when it comes to bowl games?

To play a tougher non conference schedule (on the road) you’d be giving up money and potentially hurting your chance for bowl games. Follow the $$$.

In hockey there is no $$ lost by playing top teams.

They have some directional schools scheduled to be sure, but most Power 5 schools are doing the same mainly for reasons already noted previously.

And despite the supposed cupcakes they finished the season with the 22nd SOS ahead of Miss St, MSU, Okla St, Nebraska, Washington, Indiana, UCLA, Tennessee, Oregon St, Cal, Virginia, Purdue, Oregon, Louisville, UNC, Missouri, Texas Tech, Miami, etc.

Future opponents include (knowing that some will have up an down seasons) BYU, New Mexico State (terrible program but played Alabama in 2019), Eastern Michigan (ok program that played Kentucky and Illinois in 2019), Florida Atlantic (11-3 in 2019 with a game against Ohio State), Buffalo (8-5 in 2019 and played Penn St), Colorado (Pac10 and played Nebraska in 2019), Bowling Green (not a great program but played Kansas State and Notre Dame in 2019), North Carolina, Mississippi State (SEC), MIami (OH), etc.

Next year Michigan and MSU are back on the schedule so even their conference games will be more difficult.

Would I like to see less of Western Illinois types? Yes of course but that's not the reality of the Div I scheduling landscape and for a program of Minnesota's low prestige to have just played the 22nd toughest SOS is nothing to sneeze at.

I no more cherry picked than you did. And Gopher Hockey has the clout to schedule anyone they want Gopher Football doesn't.
And more games to schedule them in.

Yeah. As many have pointed out here, scheduling NC games in football is busy a completely different proposition than in hockey. There's basically no upside for scheduling more power-5 games for anyone involved, and plenty of potential risk/downside. In hockey, if you schedule a strong program for a NC weekend, and lose both games, you've got 30 more games to offset. In football, losing a NC game ends up meaning you've got to run the table the rest of the year, or, at most, one loss if you want to get a good bowl game. The system just doesn't make it worthwhile for either team.

This would be a crazy  week 1 opponent if we had a freshman QB coming into that game. But I assume Tanner Morgan will be returning for his senior year. Even so, I can't imagine playing fOSU straight out of the gates is good for the Gophers.

A lot can happen between now and then, but if the program continues on an upward trend, it would be a great game to see under the lights.

Well, I'm not sure there is a really good time to play them, so they might as well get it out of the way before anyone gets in too much of a groove.

Re-match of the previous season’s B1G championship game. I’m thinking Game Day already. :D

Going back to the NC scheduling I'd say we are where we should be. If you are expecting to compete for the CFP you need an auburn/Oregon type game early.

We should rather be looking at total wins in the iowa/wisc mode where 8-11 every year is realistic, that's our lane or the one we should be striving for. If you assume at least 2 conf losses a year (7-2 at best) you need at least 2 NC wins to get the New Years 6/Outback-citrus track those 2 schools go to almost every year. Mix in a senior laden west champ/rose bowl year every 5 or so and I'm good for life

I hope that lane gets boring some day and the next tier (top10 EVERY year) will be quite difficult in a northern climate for recruiting 4 stars and higher, doesn't happen much except oh st/mich in the north

For now we need those wins

Compare where Sparty is these days to Dinkytown.
Maybe Reusse should do an in depth story on that green, stinking, mess.
